The RockPaperShotgun blog has a nice blog post up today heralding the unveiling of the entries in the 2016 Interactive Fiction Competition (classic text adventure games, etc.).

This year, IF Comp 2016 opened with 58 entries, the largest selection of new games in its history. The presence of all these great new games is only part of what makes IF Comp exciting. It’s also a time when the IF community comes together to comment, review, and give feedback... And now you’re invited, at whatever level of involvement you like. You can play any of the games for free.

I've been using dropbox to allow synchronization of app data for my android apps, and I'm quite happy with the API and the process in general.

But there is one substantial problem with it.

There is no way to say that you'd like to allow a group of people (via a shared password for example) to have write access to a folder (and only that folder).

If that could be done, it would be possible to do something like install an android app and tell your 5 friends that they can sync their data with you, for that app only.

As it currently stands, my android apps can only synchronize with someone who also has write-access to your same dropbox account.  Essentially this means you can only sync and share with your own multiple devices, not with other people.

It would be great if dropbox could add a feature that allowed you to designate a folder as writeable by different people, as long as they all had some access key/password.

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / NANY 2017: CheckList DC (Android checklist)
« on: September 23, 2016, 01:58 AM »
This will be a simple checklist managing app, with the ability to organize your checklists into sections.
Built using my CodyBones skeleton code that I've used in some other apps.

Mouser's Zone / How to remove the license key from mouser apps
« on: September 19, 2016, 02:08 PM »
Someone recently emailed me about removing the license key from one of my apps in preparation for giving the computer to someone else.  It's no big deal if you give them your license key, but here is the procedure if you want to wipe it:

Assuming you have windows vista/7/10, just delete the files in "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\Keys"

If you have windows xp, it will be in a similar location but the path is slightly different.

Super-sized Newsletter for September 18, 2016
"Codename: Catching Up with Cody"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings!  It's been just over a year since the last DonationCoder newsletter -- way way too long (if you check in the user-to-user section below you'll read about one of the reasons why).  As usual, you'll find below a selection of some of the top recent threads from our discussion forum, along with a sprinkling of news about the website.  You'll also see a very belated section devoted to last year's NANY (New Apps for the New Year) 2016 event, and since this newsletter was so long in coming, you'll also see an item about the upcoming 2017 NANY event.  I promise the next newsletter will not be so long in coming.

2. NANY (New Apps for the New Year) Event Roundup

For the last 10 years on the DonationCoder.com site we run a friendly event called "NANY" (New Apps for the New Year), where invite forum visitors to release a new free program on the first of the new year, to celebrate the new year.  We typically get a variety of entries -- some are genuinely useful tools designed to be shared widely, and some are programming exercises for new users.

3. Skwire Empire Software Updates and New Releases

DC member skwire is one of the more prolific coders of utilities on our site -- he roams the coding snack request section and pounces like a jaguar when he finds something that catches his eye. He's released a ton of updates to his software since the last newsletter, including some updates and a few brand new releases:

4. Mouser's Software Updates and Discussions

I've uploaded some updates to many of my large applications since the last newsletter. As always, you can find the list of what's new both in the online help pages (linked from each program homepage) or in the forum thread about the application (also linked from each program homepage).

5. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions. In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

6. DC Member Projects

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use. If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

7. Coding Snacks

One of the more popular sections on our forum is the Coding Snacks section.  There, people can posts requests for small utilities that are needed.  Coders who find an idea they like write the utility and post it as freeware for all.

8. Mini-reviews by Members

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use. If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

9. Website Discoveries, Debates, Essays, and Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members? What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out..

10. General Software Discussions

Some noteworthy general software discussions on the forum since the last newsletter:

11. Specific Software Discussions

Some noteworthy software discussions on the forum about specific software applications since the last newsletter:

12. Entertainment, Games, and Humour

Here's a collection of some fun or funny web browsing links posted on the forum recently.

13. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

14. Hardware and Non-Windows Software

While the lion's share of technical discussions on our forum involve Microsoft Windows software, hardware and linux threads are becoming increasingly common.

I'm not completely thrilled with this move towards app stores, but it seems to be the unstoppable trend that cannot be resisted for long.

Microsoft has a Windows App Store that they are strongly pushing and they for the first time just released tools to help developers publish traditional Win32 apps on their App Store.

For anyone interested in a fun coding and math/probability challenge, I thought of one the other day.  And with the Programming School area offline, I'll just post it here.

Texas Hold'Em Poker Hand Analyzer

Allow a user to provide the hands for any number of players, and some (optional) shared hand cards.

The program should then calculate the odds of each hand winning (note there are cases where there could be a tie) a game of Texas Hold'Em Poker.

Bonus points for making it easy to adjust hands/common cards.

Bonus points if your program can let you specify certain players cards as unknown.  For example it would be nice to say player 1 has "Ace and four of hearts" and there is one other player with 2 unknown cards.  What are my odds of winning?

This is exactly the kind of program they use on poker shows to show the likelyhood of each player winning as they play.  It's a great way to learn about probabilities.

This is an Android app based on the framework I used in my WhenLast android app.

It lets you create a list of "items" (events or players), and then easily tap to increase/decrease the counter for that item.  It can be used to keep track of scores for a board game, or easily count events over a longer period of time.

Obviously there are similar apps already -- this one will benefit from some of the features of my existing framework (ability to sync items over multiple devices, organization of multiple lists by tabs, etc.).

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / NANY 2017 ideas thread
« on: September 02, 2016, 11:43 AM »
It can be hard for programmers to come up with good ideas for programs to write. Do you have an idea for a program you'd like to see someone code for our NANY 2017 event?  Post it here!

N.A.N.Y. 2017 / N.A.N.Y. 2017 Announcement
« on: September 01, 2016, 03:33 PM »
Since 2007 we have held an annual event that we call NANY (New Apps for the New Year), where we ask the coders who hang out on DonationCoder to create some new piece of free software and share it with the world on January 1st of the new year.

NANY is really the funnest thing we do on this site, and it's one of the few times we can all play together.  There are no winners or losers, it's simply a celebration of programming and creating new software and sharing it with the world.  You can target any operating system (desktop or mobile) or even make a web-based tool.  It can be a game, utility, large application, whatever.  DC takes makes no claim on your software, it's just an event to encourage you to share a creation with others.  Best of all, everyone who participates gets a free commemorative coffee mug.

Living Room / Guide to Living with Introverts
« on: August 20, 2016, 12:24 PM »
Nice little cartoon guide to living with Introverts.
It uses an analogy I've seen before, describing extroverts as being recharged by social interaction vs introverts as having to spend energy to engage in social interactions -- which rings true to me (though I don't think it's the whole story).

Living Room / TV recommendation: Born This Way
« on: August 18, 2016, 06:02 PM »
I'd like to recommend a two-season reality tv show on A+E network called "Born This Way":

http://www.aetv.com/shows/born-this-way

It's a show that focuses on the lives and struggles and achievements of a group of young people with Down Syndrome, and their parents.

Quite uplifting while not sugar coating things.  Highly recommended.

Living Room / External 5.25 floppy usb drive or another way?
« on: August 11, 2016, 03:36 PM »
So I recently found a 5.25 floppy with some old code of mine that i'd like to (try to) read.  No idea if the floppy will be readable or not.
Problem is of course, no 5.25 floppy drive.

Does someone make a 5.25 usb external drive? seems a waste to buy one just for a single read but...  I guess another option would be try to find some old computer on ebay with a 5.25, but yuck.
