exactly.. I even divide my stuff between a separate partition on my laptop's drive and an external drive... it's a pain having to keep the two in sync. I'd much rather just have a software library type thing... a program made for collecting software... and separately, music. They don't need to be one program as music and software are of very different nature.

mouser, here's one open source Podcast receiver/client that looks very promising judging by the looks of the site design of the associated site, LOL. It's very weird.. because I know I looked at that just 2 or 3 weeks ago and it was called iPodder. They just recently renamed it into JUICE. Cool name, still. I knew about that client already, but as always when I'm looking for a client for a specific function, I check Wikipedia and its "clients" list at the end of the article. So I looked up "podcast" on Wikipedia, and it had what I was looking for... a list of clients. That list is extremely short and very much incomplete right now, but hey, it'll grow in time. In fact, I might add some clients myself :)

Thunderbird works great, but of course it won't play anything. You will have to manually download the file, which for me works very well with the method outlined in the original post of this thread. But still I'm curious about an ACTUAL Podcasting tool. I'll give Juice a go.

You know what I need? A software cataloguing program. Also, maybe one for music... currently I do everything manually and I keep stuff in folders. It's not that great, really. I'd like to be able to look at my software collection, with categories, possibly, independently of folder structure on disc. Same thing for music I suppose.. although with music it's not that bad, because I don't divide by genre, just by artist, so a list of folders with albums makes sense.

I'm happy if you're happy, mouser, lol. No seriously, you're perfectly right. I'm very much for the personal discovery of music. It's a hard thing to do, I find, and it takes time and work... but it's extremely rewarding, and TONS OF FUN. I could do it all day... technically, that's kind of what I DID do all day, haha.

One way to organize things would be with a download manager... but that's a very basic way of organization, and probably not enough. Check out my screenshots for examples with IDM. It does all that automatically. But a catalogue software would be excellent.

I ignored podcasts for a while... but today I made some ground-breaking, life-changing discoveries on the web. Here's what started it all: http://pcworld.com/n.../0,aid,123539,00.asp
That led to the discovery of this: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/, an excellent independent music review site. They have a great best of the year album section as well. I bookmarked it instantly and am waiting for when I have time to check it all out.
Somewhere along the way I came across this: http://www.listal.com/. I haven't signed up or used it yet because I was busy discovering music and going nuts like that. But if you guys try it, let me know how it is. Another thing I found just the other day is here: http://www.pandora.com/ -- interesting, not sure how useful. Check it out and see.

And then came the bomb... ironically, I don't even have a clue where I found it now, but I was captivated by it. But here it is, my currently favorite MP3 music blog: http://aurgasm.us/. My recommendations for that page...

- Curumin
- Arctic Monkeys
- Tin Hat Trio
- Hanne Hukkelberg
- Antje Duvekot

Varying styles but all great stuff. You may agree or disagree of course... but once you're done reading this thread, there is no way you will not have found something you like.

Here's another great, random link: http://www.informati...e_top_40_band_2.html (tip: the first two links in the text, in case you don't bother reading the intro part, link you to the 2003 and 2004 version of the same page)

I added Aurgasm to my Thunderbird and went through all of the entries on there, only to be sucked in and magically transformed by the world of beautiful, yet undiscovered music.
As I was listening, I started checking out other MP3 blogs, something I wasn't even aware existed... and I found so many that my head is about to explode. Here's an excellent way to prevent that from happening: http://hype.non-standard.net/

Now what I've been doing so far is this. I add the feed to Thunderbird, had Internet Download Manager (best download manager ever IMHO) detected Thunderbird as an application that downloads files (and then turned the feature back off in IDM). I set a default folder up called "Blog Music" and now every time I right-click and hit "save as" in Thunderbird with the MP3 files being blogged about... IDM kicks in and grabs the file ridiculously fast and puts them in that mentioned folder. It works great. Just since I discovered all this tonight, I made a playlist of 41 songs, (current), all full of free, beautiful music. And it's constantly growing :). I use QMP to play music files and have it set to "only" append songs to the playlist when they are opened, not play them... so when IDM finishes I just have it open the file and boom, it's added to the playlist. Works great, this method.. but I'm wondering... are there any tools out there designed specifically for Podcasts?

I'm not sure.. is there a better, more efficient way to do what I'm doing? I guess that's my big question here :). If you follow the links I've provided, (check out the mp3 blogs the Hype Machine links to on the right...), you will undoubtedly lose hours of time ahead of you, but they will be very well spent. I for one had a blast embarking on this phenomenal journey of musical discovery :).

Have fun!

EDIT (Correction!):
Oh my!! I gave false credit. I did read that PC World article today and loved it... but not until reading this Lifehacker entry did the journey start: http://www.lifehacke...ic-online-138265.php
THAT's where I got Aurgasm from :). Gotta fucking love Lifehacker.

I have no damn clue what the guys at Cerulean are thinking... no updates in forever :(

But hey.. Trillian works for me. It's as stable as a rock. That doesn't mean it couldn't use an update or improvements, but at least I'm not having any problems that really need fixing ;)

I can't use Miranda just for IRC. That would be odd.. and the reason I say "just for IRC" is because I use Trillian Pro for everything else.

I have to say I like Klient.. its interface is beautiful and the preferences are ridiculously easy. Aside from that, it really doesn't seem to offer anything extraordinary, especially compared to mIRC. It's a good, solid client, no doubt, and I guess that's what counts :).

I keep looking at VORTEC though.. and every time I take a look I'm more interested. I will probably try it out soon. It's also updated more than Klient. Klient's last release was in July or something.. Vortec's in October :)

Mp3tag all the way.  8)

Ditto.. it doesn't get any better IMHO :). Not in that category.

I never even considered a multi-protocol chat client as a viable option for an IRC client.. not sure why. I use Trillian Pro myself, and love it.. but I've never once tried doing IRC with it. Opera is also my main browser, which has IRC integrated... I never use it.

I just installed and tried Klient... and I must say, it blows me away. For the first time, EVER, an IRC client's setup options and interface actually make PERFECT SENSE. Even mIRC takes quite some getting used to until you get the interface and especially all the options and settings... Klient seems to be the way an IRC client SHOULD BE MADE. I'm rather amazed at the moment, I must say... I haven't connected to any channels yet.. just went through the options and customized here and there.. but just that left me very impressed.

I'm sure I'll report back after I gather some more info on Klient's performance/quality, but for right now, I'm quite impressed. (Their website became usable again and I was able to download :))

I've come to a similar conclusion with mIRC.. I'm going to give Klient a try because it does look promising but if that doesn't work out I'll probably end up with my old, tried & tested combo of mIRC + NNScript.

The FREE is just a guideline.. I'd like you all to point out whatever you think is the best client :). I actually tried downloading Klient earlier.. and the site is as good as down. Terribly slow and unresponsive.. I looked for other mirrors but couldn't find any :/

General Software Discussion / Best FREE IRC client?
« on: November 17, 2005, 12:23 AM »
I know mIRC is popular and I've always liked it.. but I don't like how no new version of it has appeared in almost a year and a half.. and I never bought mIRC, and frankly, given the situation, now is the worst time to pay for it. So.. I took a look at everything listed here: http://en.wikipedia...._IRC_clients#Windows

And well, I'm pretty confused now. There are so many clients out there I'm about to go nuts.. savIRC and Vortec IRC both look great. ViRC looks ok but not very user friendly and the comments/reviews on betanews support this assumption. I've tried Hydra IRC at least twice before and somehow I was never able to become friends with it. I might have to give it another shot.. but one downside of it is that it too is stuck in a development-halt phase.. apparently it's been stuck at the version it's at now for a while. It's freeware but not open source so all development depends on its author.

Does anyone here have experience with all these clients?

Thanks ;)

Some beautiful shots in there, tsaint. I must say JetPhoto's web-gallery creation is rather amazing. It makes things look very attractive and gives the user a lot of control. Sweet :)

I'm still looking for the best photo organization tool, however. For Windows.

265
I posted the same thing over at dslreports.com... haha.. and I'm finding it very interesting to see how my mind traces exactly the same things as yours. Check out the thread here, look at the third post, by me: http://www.broadband...orum/remark,14815864

brotherS's comment is what I said about the exact same feature, VERBATIM. Haha.. and I also reached the same conclusion as Carol Haynes (Sherlock Haynes?).. you'll see what I mean. Take a look.

266
I was searching del.icio.us for photo organization tools and of course I saw Picasa all over the place.. I don't know if it's just me, but I can't say that I really like Picasa and the way it does things. I don't think it's as transparent as it could be... (what are keywords, what are labels? and why are keywords not visible and editable directly in the interface? the only way to get to them seems through a keyboard shortcut which pops open a box... not exactly intuitive..) and it seems to like organizing pictures by folders, which I hate. I like organizing completely independent of folder structure :/

Anyway.. I keep hitting next.. and find this: http://www.jetphotosoft.com/web/

Looks amazing! Has anyone tried it? I'm looking for a great digital photo organization tool. That's until I can get Adobe Photoshop Elements v4.0 fixed on my system... I'm still having problems with that.

If anyone tries it out.. let me know how it is, especially compared to other similar software, such as Picasa.

Thanks

I've tried it a long time ago and thought it was pretty good. I have since settled with Mp3Tag, however. It's amazingly powerful and I'm extremely efficient with it. I also use MusicBrainz Picard release.. which is still in early development, however, but is based on a very interesting concept.

I'll check Godfather out but I'm pretty happy with just Mp3Tag :)

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Minimized Startup not working

Sorry I haven't replied in so long.. I've been doing a lot of restructuring on my system lately.. imaging, restoring an older image of windows and installing everything from scratch.. and so on. I don't have Clipboard Help + Spell installed ATM.

I'll get back to this thread if I experience the bug again :)

I've used Website Watcher in just the way Mouser suggested and it works great.

And just HOW is that? :) I need to see that.

I get frustrated when there are too many things in an application that I don't understand, as is the case with WSW. For example.. I'm really confused by those checkboxes at certain places in preferences.. where it seems it would make sense if there was just one checkbox, but instead there are two horizontally next to each other, so I don't know wtf it means if I turn one on and leave the other unchecked, or check both.. or what. It's just confusing and I think it could be vastly improved in terms of usability. But maybe it's just me who doesn't get it.

Thanks for the link

Good point CarolHaynes. I'll do that, thanks ;)

I'm sure you could. I still find WSW hard to use and not very intuitive. I could never really get into it. The interface and the preferences are killing me.

I don't have a clue how to use it either, nor would I know where to find it. I'm pretty sure that one's submitted already. It's a very simple bug, and somebody MUST have submitted it already. Let's wait for mouser to see this thread :D

I know.. wouldn't it. And it's so simple too! I can't believe nobody has thought of making this type of thing yet, especially given the incredible amount of software out there... let's keep this thread alive and see what we can find in the future. I will report back once I have a chance to test packtrack.com. I currently have no packages to track, but perhaps you could give it a shot and post about how it performs?

Greetings

I'm a Lifehacker reader and love it.. so I would have come across this, had I not neglected reading the latest entries on there!! Thanks a ton for the heads-up, Mouser. I just got done installing my brand new bamboo drapes that I got at Bed Bath & Beyond today. Took about 3 hours to install those suckers! It was hard work, but now it's done and looks beautiful. I didn't have any drapes before this.. and when the sun shone in the morning it shone directly on me and cooked me in my bed until I awoke feeling as if I had just come out of a sauna... not that great a way of getting up. Well, sorry for the OT bit, but this had to be shared :)

Again, thanks for the heads up.
