Nicely done.

I'm not sure I will go for more sophistication than the virtual desktops. (At the moment, that improvement is making me happy.)

I do have a question about the system tray or notification area.  It seems like that should have a quick improvement tab that shows you names and whatevers.   It really is more than notifications, it is used by many programs as an alternate taskbar area.  Leading to abundant hovering.

That leads to another question. In Windows 7, can all programs that are in the system tray be pinned to taskbar?  That would be a leveling method, and would work well with my virtual desktop usage. And then maybe just leave a couple of system monitors in the "notification" area.

Hi,

I like the taskbar, I leave two rows.  It still gets very cluttered. I don't like various solutions like restoring the QuickLaunch.
Also the window situation gets a little difficult.

Virtual Desktops were a big thing, some years ago, now they are more thought of in terms of multi-monitor.

And I noticed one mentioned the other day.

Multi-Tabber
http://multitabber.codeplex.com/

The description reminded me of GoScreen, the one I chose in 2006 and bought a license and they still have a yahoogroups forum.
Andrew Guranov, author.  I chose it partly because it was more native to Windows functions, no weird hooks, quite stable.

The license is lifetime, still good for the latest release (WinSnap is another utility with an excellent lifetime license.)

Loaded it back, and it it seems quite good for my needs.

The primary desktop is browsers, email, chat skype.
I set up an auxiliary one for documents, PDFs, viewers, etc. (That was really cluttering the taskbar.)
One for utilities.
One for notes programs.
Stuff like that.
You are not limited, if I am in the primary and need Notezilla or Total Commander, I simply use the start menu.
Probably I can put a program in multiple virtuals.  Lots could be checked out.

GoScreen
http://www.goscreen.info/
Note the good online documentation, how-to-guide.

FYI: Ok, it knocked away my wallpaper at first, took a minute to put it back.
It moved around icons, I put them back with DesktopOK.  I'm not sure if that is an inherent problem.
No mini-problems after the initial install and some playing around.  It might have had something to do with the
drag-and-drop capability you have with their set-up that starts on the left.

The longevity and ongoing support makes GoScreen a bit of a sleeper program.  Maybe Dexpot and
some others are more sophisticated.  GoScreen has some solid utility functions, it is rather a neat program.

Hi,

Yes I think I will start a thread here ... title something like:

"questions about stickies ... the NoteZilla memoboard paradigm"

And that will be the one thread where I will place the Notezilla quirks and needs.
Snap-to-grip, or something like that, likely being #1. Tabs on top would be a wonderful complement to the tree structure.  Is that asking too much in the road-map? This really relates to the memoboard full-blown personal and project note system.

And I am interested in hearing what people don't like about this memoboard use.  Clearly you don't have sophisticated tables and spreadsheets and stuff like that as in some full-blown note implementations like Rightnote.  Internal linking should be compared.

Also you do not have publish-to-web as in
TreePad - Memobook - MyInfo -Mynoteskeeper
(I quickly went to my memoboard to find that short list.)

And one major element of the thread will be what I find important benefits, aspects and needs in Notezilla.
Also a general go-with-the-flow discussions of comparison of the "Big Three":

 .. Notezilla, Stickies, and PNotes.

And anything we can learn from the others, including the memoboards online like Listhings.
(And why can't anybody do web pages the neat Internote way, working with urls instead of window names.)

As I have indicated, it seems that NoteZilla is only one with a fine memoboard implementation (it looked like you lack a corkboard background :) ) and for me, this is the single most important feature.  Tree structure, whitespace be-gone, pleasant RTF and colors, those are the basics that I require.  And this crosses the line from sticky to note system, and a week or two has only increased the significance.

Again, a forum, or a section in a forum in the Wilders ways, would discuss such uses, and generate interest.

And I definitely recommend that you make up a special page emphasizing the potential utility of memoboards as a full-blown note system. It took me many years to see the potentiality.  (And I would not be surprised if some of the other sticky systems come up with an implementation, so you want a head-start in user base and feedback.)

I'd like to look at the various synch capabilities, since stickies, other than implementations like the Listhings memoboard and Internote or Diigo, are inherently desktop.

What it would mean to try to do quick-print. And even publish to web. (e.g. either export to HTML or screen snaps to web). If screenshots, I'll probably try an ad hoc implementation, maybe using ShareX, Greenshot or Screenshot Captor.  Also maybe using macro automation.  The export to HTML works fine, although it ends with a white-space page. Hmmm .. how about a visual maintained export.

I'm hoping to try out the whole network and transferring aspect.  There, cost and convenience come to play and some people might end up using more than one sticky system.

Hi,

If you are backing up and restoring on one puter ...

And if you do it with multiple programs on multiple backup medium and have the appropriate rescue CD and the CD drive works (maybe USB is an alternate)

It would be hard to hose the system or even to have a fail on the partition restore.  No matter what you do e.g. to the c:\.  I think you would have to hose the master boot record, MBR, which may or may not be handled by the backup or a fix-MBR program.

The solution then would be either:
  a) installing OS CDs that came with the system
  b) burning OS CDs, since (a) may not occur anymore, which are installed
      or the puter may have a special partition for this
  c) having it done at a store with OS install equipment .. mine says they charge about $80 (assuming it is a legal PC.)
      granted .. I have tech-savvy stores here in Queens that are easy to work with

It is fun and a learning experience to do an OS install from scratch .... once.

Steven

A bit more.

Just a note, I am really talking here about the home systems, usually one to five PCs floating around or with friends, each one different than the other.  You are using an image largely for malware and sluggish slowdown and disk fail (buying a replacement) and OS corruption protection.  There are other applications with cloning and biz use that are different.

================================

On most systems, one major limitation of the free version in restoring on the same computer, with an attempted restore after you change the partition size. My understanding: even if the partition could fit, a free version will plead ignorance and not try.

Here Aomei is said to be an exception:
"[2014-11-27] New Features in AOMEI Backupper 2.1 ...      Support for restoring system to a smaller partition."
http://www.backup-ut...om/new-features.html

This is one reason I would make Aomei one of the versions, if you using free versions.
Note: I would still make a new image right after any partition changes.  The partition changes often have to do with a Linux multi-boot, or special partitions for data or whatevers.

================================

Another concern would be restoring an image on a totally different system. I think this is a sophisticated usage, and even when it is supported, it can be problematic.  As long as you do the data backup independently of the image, I think this can be bypassed as a consideration.

Do the data backups!

Do not rely fully on images for mission-critical, unless you have personally confirmed that the image can also be seen and restored file-by-file and is recent enough. For my take, I don't bother with that type of ongoing image check, my ongoing backups will be data file-by-file.  I like DriveHQ for remote because of a strong file manager and some support for mapping. Locally I have a Western Digital MyBook Essentials and some others.

================================

Another element is creating a Windows PE disk, which I have found problematic.
Here Aomei says why they encourage this:
http://www.backup-ut...e-bootable-disc.html
Since the purpose of the created CD in my case is simply to restore a partition(s), I don't see any need for Windows PE.
It is good to have a stash of rescue CDs, even if you could conceivably create them on another puter in an emergency.

==================================

Those are my thoughts on this, with no special expertise.

Steven

331
I suggest always backing up two images from two different programs.  Also maybe using two different externals. If it is mission-critical, something off-site. And I only do images occasionally, once I have some from an early fairly clean install.

My fav is Macrium Reflect and Aomei Backupper. When I see a sale, I will likely buy a Pro version of Macrium.  Aomei has more features in the free and has made a big splash, without hiccups. I've been successful every time with Macrium and the interface is sweet, so they are my #1, and I've never felt nagged (if there is something there, it is not annoying.) Easeus has a few more failure reports, but that could be a big installed base. DriveImage XML (probably the highest % of problems of the software mentioned here) and Paragon and a couple of others should be fine.  The tech support of Paragon has occasionally been lauded (last I checked a while back.)

Unless you are doing software testing where you reload the OS frequently, I have never understood the emphasis on whether it takes 15 or 25 minutes.  After all, you are not being chained to the puter for a once in a blue moon install.  Play with the second puter. See how the Chromebook works. Play with the tablet.

Or sip some tea. Or take a walk...outside!

Aomei has a forum of sorts:
http://www.aomeitech...om/forum/discussions

Macrium has a strong forum.
http://support.macrium.com/

Paragon on Wilders - Official Paragon Support Forum
http://www.wildersse...n-support-forum.107/

EaseUS forum - backup
http://forum.easeus....m/viewforum.php?f=14

DriveImage XML, no native forum, lots of helpful discussion on tech forums.

And I suggest the frequent backups should simply be data backups, using a flexible data backup-program like:

Personal Backup 5
http://personal-back...home.de/index-e.html

Ascomp
http://www.backupmaker.com
English Forum
https://www.ascomp.d...dex.php?showforum=52

There is no need to do a full image just to have a small amount of data backup. Data backup is easy enough to do in the cloud as well. Those two look especially noteworthy (Personal Backup lacks the forum, yet it looks nicer) although I have used Backup4All paid, Cobian free, and some others.

If the use is for business, then there is additional checking about licensing. Also your point:

"Macrium is more expensive, also compare prices for more than one pc"

What you really want is something like the security software, a special for a pro version on 3+ puters.  If you aren't simply happy with the free versions. I think the Aomei having extra features in the free should be noted.

General Software Discussion / Re: Browser Hijackers
« on: February 04, 2015, 05:27 AM »
Another possibility in culprit-hunting is to look for the date of the install of the browser hijacker and see what was installed that day.  The last time I ran into that type of situation, I used Everything and sorted the files on disk by creation date, a flat-view.

Hi,

Now that I have a faster puter (Dell Optiplex 990 -Windows 7 with 10 GB memory) I find that more extensions are fine.  Firefox still crashes sometimes,  but I just bring it back up. And if I anticipate a problem, I do a Restart (e.g. extension Restartless Restart).  And I keep an external Firefox kill shortcut nearby that uses PsKill. And Session Manager.

The first 10 are the most fundamental, basic extensions are:

Linkman (although I use the Dropbasket)
Tab Mix Plus
Restaratless Restart
Session Manager
All-in-One Sidebar
Download Manager S3
Lazarus
LastPass
Open IT Online
Cleanest AddonManager and/or Slim Add-ons Manager
Telify and Skype Click-to-call
FEBE-CLEO
Avast Online Security and Bluhell Firewall.
unmask and/or Unhide Passwords.
Quickjava
The Add-on Bar (restored)
Internote
Tab Counter

Considering Diigo
There are a bunch more installed that I am considering and a bunch more I am considering to install!

Hmm... Now I'll have to really read the thread!

======================================

Here is my current tweak.

Tab Set Saver and Tab Mix Plus

Normally I have TMP at five rows. For this tweak I may set it higher.  First I do my normal stuff of setting up a page of many related open windows, in this example it is Windows Tweaks. I move any oddball stuff out. Then I save it as a set using TSS to a special folder on disk.  Then delete the window.  Then bring up the TSS page up. (On the TSS extension discussion, I suggested automating these steps.) I can then have multiple related TSS pages. Voila!  25+ visual links grouped together in one open page. Memory minimal and organization assistance.  This can be done with my main work and social pages as well, as an alternative to Xerpi and other bookmark and Start Page ideas.

If you have tools that accomplish this type of idea better, please share away :).

This creates a simple .html file, which I can also upload.

Hi,

Notice that the Scrivener pics avoid the white space plague
http://www.literatur...te.com/scrivener.php

And I may place this in my front-tier of programs to try out. Never really worked with Scrivener, Zotero, etc.

Peter discusses Citavi and Ultra Recall above. Citavi
https://www.citavi.com/
is new to me, and  looks like it is a similar genre to Scrivener.

I may need do a little study and trial here.  Along with Outline 4D and I noticed WIT (Web Idea Tree) and Open Element and some others in my studies.  The question here is the interplay between study, research, outline and structure, writing and web writing. (See also below, Connected Text.)  I think there is a tendency for reviews to see less than the big picture.  Maybe MyInfo and Ultra Recall is in here as being somewhat multi-dimensional.  And I chuckle every time Ultra Recall is mentioned because it was my fav program a gazillion years ago.

Going a bit afield, Memonic remains interesting, and I ran across a new bookmarking start page possibility called Mojave.

And Notezilla still is the one place I want to do personal notes. You just got to get over the "Sticky Note" mentality, for this it is a Memoboard. Let me give an example. I was struggling looking at gmail notifiers, for a specific need. And struggling about how to keep my notes (e.g. this program looks good, but is quirky and allows multiple instances, a no-no.) And once I set up a Notifiers memoboard in Notezilla, it was all well-formed, trivial go get in and out, quick and pleasant. For that type of ad hoc need, I have not found anything close. Notezilla with RTF and tree has replaced the web-based Listhings with tabs. (Tree and tabs are ultra-best.)

==================================================

Here is a blog and researcher who looked at some of these notetaking issues, with lots of reviews:

Paul J. Miller - I used to be undecided, but now I'm not so sure.
https://pauljmiller....oftware/note-taking/

First, note that a missing link is that he did not get around to trying out RightNote.

ConnectedText was a winner, in his book, MyInfo and Instant Recall got major pluses.

==================================================

From Peter's excellent post:

as soon as you think "print/export" -
  True, for me insufficient, this is really a thinking, reading, looking at the screen need.

development of desktop outliners is more or less stalled ...the lesser, semi-solutions above.
   Agreed.  Often the gems are a bit hidden, and you can make something special out of them.

similar to the flattening out of the file system's directories... where some file managers help out a lot.
   Yep, that is one of the most important functions that is made not so obvious.
    Last time I simply used Everything.  I wanted to see what had been downloaded, created, on a specific date/time. Worked great!

==================================================

Added:
Silvernote - listed on the Paul Miller blog, shows some promise in the memoboard category

Outline 4D emphasizes in their blurbs screen writing and fiction writing.  And it does look like a solid tool in many ways. The question is whether it adapts well to non-fiction writing.

In my case I have a number of articles planned on the history  (includes the writings of specific individuals) and textual and translational aspects of certain Bible verses.  Take any technical non-fiction writing (e.g. theories relating to 911 or the shooting of JFK or an analysis of freeware and software strengths). The question is simple .. do the strengths of Outine 4D carry over?  Have you found the program a big help on non-fiction writing?

With Wiznotes, whenever I really try to use Onenote or Evernote, I should also try to use Wiznote :).  Overall, I'm not sure if will need a web-desktop type of app.  And I saw the fine Wiznote thread on DC that was a type of review-discussion.

Hi,

One of the problems with both Rightnote and Notezilla is that, due to the lack of a forum, you learn about special uses only in a piecemeal fashion. (Same on other porgrams, like Linkman.)

Superboyac
"I just tried Notezilla (again)...no, it doesn't work for me.  As I mentioned before, a really great feature for rightnote or any similar tree hierarchy is the option to display in masonry-style, all the subnotes."

Can you show how this is done in Rightnote?

I see something interesting in the:

RNUserGuide
Tab - More Features
Tree - Samples -  "Sample Week Template".

Here you have a group of independent boxes (conceptually could be columns or tiles) and the size is variable (increases as data comes in.)
That, and your picture, are at least in my ballpark.

Searching the help file for "Template"
Takes you to the clipper section only:

"New content is actually added by way of a pre-defined template. Advanced users may want to modify the default templates or create their own. For an example of supported variables take a look at the "BookmarkXX.rvf" templates in the SystemTemplates folder (My Documents\My RightNote\SystemTemplates). Templates can be edited with the RichViewEditor utility that is available at http://www.bauerapps...m/RichViewEditor.zip."

If I can learn the functionality to have RightNote a convenient, linked, full screen (little white-space) note-keeper, then I will likely have an interesting decision as to where to use Notezilla, where Rightnote.

=====================================

As to why Notezilla is working for me, so far, I can get in, find, and add or change very quickly. Looks good.  Allows emphasis. Tree tells me what section I am in. Can move a note from a memoboard to another board super-easily.  When a page gets crowded, you set up a sub-page and put a few related items down there. It actually is very easy to work with.

And  I did not realize what is for me the actual best use capability of Notezilla till recently (maybe I'll set up a set of 4 pics) .. no forum, few pics.  I thought of the memoboard only in the context of the note manager, and everybody has a manager, so it was no great shakes.  At the time.

Likely a similar situation with Rightnote.

=====================================

I'm taking a little look at Wiznote and Outline 4D.

(I will mention again Listhings, that I only pass by mainly because of the RTF lack. Quite a web page organizer and I have a lot in there ready to move to Notezilla.)

And I agree that you won't find a single tool that does everything.   In my situation, the goal is to have a few tools that help with quick notes, structured research and writing and publishing to the web.  Within the quick notes, I find the concepts behind Notezilla, Rightnote and Listhings all very friendly, even while very different.  Rightnote allows for more advanced types of organization.

The website says it works for 32-bit only, the conversations here seem to be about any Windows OS.

Is the program good for Windows 7 64-bit?
If not, is there a recommended alternative.?

"This application does not work correctly on 64-bit versions of Windows. Use it on 32-bit versions only."

This thread and idea comes out of a couple of recent discussions.

editor with built-in column or tiling facility - (Listhings comes close)
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=39951.0

The (stickies) memoboard as a column-based editor, flexible size rectangles, has turned out to be my fav, as in the pic below.

Also I want to look at some of the benefits, and some of the needs, with Notezilla if you use it this way.  Other sticky programs can be considered if they have a memoboard implementation.  This thread may double as my Notezilla discussion thread.  One reason I am ready for this is that I have some of the elements nicely laid out on my Notezilla memoboard dedicated to Stickies programs! Notezilla helps me keep track of Notezilla weaknesses as well as strengths.

Web-based memoboard implementations (eg. Listhings, which only lacks the RTF, having tabs rather than a tree structure) can also be compared.  My requirements will differ from others, so by going over the major feature set, it might help with the idea.

===========================================================

Goal

1) tree and/or tabbed note system

2) free-form structure that allows column-based and tile-based representations.
   a) avoid massive white-space common to desktop note programs
   b) match the fact that different types of thinking have different length and style notes appropriate

3) RTF - (also background colors) (also take pics from the clipboard)

4) ease of use on editing, sizing, searching, moving from one topic to another.
    stability & support
    pleasant to navigate and use

===========================================================

Major Auxiliary Elements

multi-user collaboration, network, sync and/or export-import capbabilities

webpage annotation system (Internote stickies and Diigo-style workspaces, where Notezilla is at least in the mix)

publish to web (e.g. Menomic) - (FYI: Notezilla may have some utility here per memoboard by things like HTML export)

tablet capable

multi-OS

===========================================================

Overlap areas. They will not be the prime decision areas. Why?  Because I am in my note program 20-50 times in a day.  It really wants to be pleasant and quick.  If the note program I like the most is only used with USB or Dropbox style sharing, that is fine by me. For this function, I don't want a less happy program just for the "use easily anywhere" experience. I also like the fact that Notezilla and Vueminder will be happy Taskbar companions, always one click away, never lost in the Tab Maze.

Saying that, I will acknowledge that  Listhings, a free web-memoboard, able to be used anywhere, is quite fine overall for many note uses. I simply like my notes in RTF, which is not available, and there is no active development. Backing up and persistence up is also less clear. If a webboard did have all the basics, it might surpass using Notezilla.

My other related tools ?

Xerpi - VueMinder Calendar - Linkman - Firefox with extensions and bookmarks - Lastpass
Hmmm... I mention this because there is a type of data relatedness that makes these programs central. The first step on the net is Xerpi, as a startpage.

Other browsers are used, Facebook has its place, document programs are utilized. At work, there is a CRM / project and task manager, yet the group above make my daily personal net navigation experience. Contacts can be in Linkman, often with the keyword "addy", so this bypasses the PIM. (VueMinder can do structured contacts with custom fields, if needed also there are free web CRMs). At the moment Listpro and Todolist and Task Coach and Swift Todo and database and others are mostly on vacation. Rightnote is curtailed, on a diet.

Overall, I want to put as much as possible into the Notezilla and Linkman quasi-freeform structure. Many databases are de facto in Linkman, like software registrations with keyword SN#.  Screenshots and file managers and utilities and  DriveHQ and backup are a separate region. Documents and writing and research are a separate region.

===========================================================

Next, I want to go into where Notezila shines, and improvements desired.

The first year at any rate is 1/2 with the Bits Du Jour thing.

$14/yr or $28/yr is fine by me ... if the tool becomes a major part of my notes and writing system.  Especially if it helps get up pages quickly that are more interesting than a blog post.

However, I probably won't really give it a try yet .. maybe in a week or two.

Trello looks good for a personal or collaborative hybrid of project manager and todo list.

(Right now we are using Insightly for this collaboratively, as part of a CRM. Not as visual
yet rather a decent tool.  It has been quite a "hit" for the 4 person collaboration.)

As a master note list Trello looks like it simply has fixed column lengths, lacks RTF and
the memoboard structure is not a visual tree with subunits. Somewhat of a different
tool.

The Notezilla memoboards allow flexible output and visual emphasis, a big plus for
your own notes and remembrance situation.

Notezilla has become my standard of comparison.

btw, I had done the Notezilla review here many years back, and then had not used
it for some years.  I came back to it through the back-door, looking for a flexible
column editor and notes schema ... web or desktop.  So far, good.

Notezilla also seems good for the web page annotation  theme although getting it
attached to the page is multi-step, it would be nice if it could have an Internote
style extension icon in Firefox.  However, there may be architecture questions.

Beyond  that, networking and such, I am hoping that Gautam Jain (Conceptworld)
will engage in more in depth discussions on a singular thread or a new forum.

Gautam, c'mon .. we know you appreciate the positive chatter, and can point us to Notezilla,
now why don't you do a bit more in dialog?  We've got questions and ideas, maybe you have
some answers and feedback.

I think PriPrinter Pro will be willing to give Donationcoder a 30% discount on the Pro, making it a bit better.

Based on some recent correspondence after a Bits special (which was not on the Pro.)

The program is very good, and the alternatives like Fineprint also cost money.
Depends on the long-term features and sophistication you like.

I plan to buy.

Hi Jim,

Welcome!
look forward to trying the Android app.

=====

Note that in another thread, with a pic too, I really decided to return to NoteZilla because of your excellent memoboard implementation.  This, combined with RTF and a tree structure and pleasant interface.  And I have not found anything comparable, neither web nor desktop apps.  This makes Notezilla my master short note place, starting yesterday.  Working fine. luv it.

(For forum friends, Stickies, which we know is an excellent freeware program, only has backdoor methods to try to approach this memoboard functionality, at this time.  There is a thread on the Zhorn forum about the request.)

=====

Here are a couple of NoteZilla questions.

1) To use the network features, does each participating (even if just receiving) computer have to have a full independent license? What if they are your home puters?  This might be on your site, but maybe you can chat about it here.  Is there a need for a yearly subscription service?

2) Snap to grid .. making solid rectangles in some way.
Any available function short of hand twiggling?  (This was one place where Stickies shines.)

3) Why not have a forum of sorts? Or at least a dedicated thread here?  We might be able to help with ideas of how and where and who.  Good solid software with longevity is hard to find.  Plus in the right environment you can have a high level of posting.

General Software Discussion / developing a collaboration suite
« on: January 28, 2015, 02:38 AM »
Hi,

Circumstances, largely biz-related, have led me to look at the best tools for ongoing long-distance web collaboration on projects. Small team of 2-3 people, frequently meeting with another individual or small team from outside.

Some things are simple.

=========================

Teamviewer is used for helping directly. Or watching something in process. It is not normally on, but when used, works superbly.

Skype is used for the ongoing calling (as if in the same office) and the actual conference calling. (I use some other VOIP as well, but company-wide .. Skype really does the job pretty nicely. I even try to hot-link the telephone numbers in the browser using Firefox extension Telify or the aggressive Skype add-on.)

Google docs and sheets has a place of helping with Google drive and they are used in a mild sharing manner. (Smartsheet is an interesting program that might enhance some of that experience).  In the long run, this might be changed, but it does work.

=========================

I find Skype to be poor on the chat portion though. e.g. Conversations get fractured into various ad hoc team groups that are created on-the-fly by adding people to Skype calls.

For me, the choice right now is Hipchat.  A little private biz chat room.  They are a leader in that niche  (businesses do not want to even try to use Facebook or Paltalk for chat, due to the distraction level.) There are alternatives, Kato, Slack, Svyft, Flowdock are examples.  One big thing about HipChat is  that they have a desktop app, and it is hard to consider chat alternatives while they are only browser based.  Granted .. theoretically I could put them on one of the lesser used browsers like Pale Moon and Vivaldi, so that is not an absolute requirement.

=========================

We needed a CRM.  Sales and contacts is central. If it had project, task and calendar capabilities, that was even better. Light, friendly.  Three got a lot of consideration, Workbooks from UK, Nimble and Insightly from USA.  Insightly is being used, although I am still playing with the others, with personal accounts.  Each has advantages, Nimble is heavily social media savvy.  Workbooks is more in the style of a multi-faceted biz product and its notes are really RTF!  Insightly has a good balance and solid google integration.

Anyway, thus we bypass the Asana, Basecamp, Codebase types of programs internally.  Although we do get Basecamp and Codebase stuff from two outside companies that are involved.

email, webhosting and ecommerce are all involved.  I will say that Nexcess does an incredibly good support job on web hosting.

=========================

What about ad hoc quick screen sharing notes and pics?  So far, dunno. Too light a need to load up Teamviewer.  Google docs and Insightly and email attachments are for more formal use.  Maybe Hipchat but not for short documents, it really is talk and url and a couple of pics.  It is not meant for pretty. Or annotations and notes.

Sharex (formerly ZScreen) and Ybex Clipboard and a dozen more represent one way to handle that. My NoteZilla (also Stickies and PNote) experiments could be considered, since the have a type of networking capability. (e.g. "Send via Network" - PNote.)  See the Memonic thread. On the stickies I would have to compare the implementation.

What is light, easy and acceptable to a couple of people who have not worked with those tools?

Hmmm...

Your thoughts on any of the above welcome.  Granted, it touches on a wide range of software.

Would it be good for Donationcoder get more "social" .. using Facebook or chat or collaboration?  hmmm...

memonic is a hybrid web and desktop notetaking app from Switzland. freemium style, modest cost.
It looked like they were honoring the Bits Du Jour discount, last I checked.

The Facebook page is last updated 2012
https://www.facebook.com/mymemonic

The Twitter feed is current.

Apparently they have a Salesforce-related add-on that is popular.The Desktop App means it does not easily get lost in the Tab Maze. (Chat programs HipChat and Pidgin were other recent examples for me where the Desktop App really helps. Similarly the NoteZilla memoboards.)

Menomic has a full RTF editor, receives pics from the clipboard nicely, a tree structure and good sharing capabilities. Make a page public and you might have a

1) de facto blog post or
2) project info at work online, very visible

In a way that is hard to accomplish with various other tools.  I'm considering using it for that dual purpose mainly.  (Note: apparently does not have column capabilities.)

Possibly a quasi-word processor article holding place (alternatives: Atlantis WP and RightNote).  Especially if it is unicode happy.  That would be an interesting 3-tool comparison, where each tool represents a genre.  Maybe I should check the HootSuite type of tool as well, which is supposed to be a place-holder for multi-blogs. Then add Google Docs and Drive with helpers in the mix as another alternative.  I write up some articles on Bible issues that might want to take a Greek or Hebrew font, so that is why I mention unicode.

Menomic seems to have flown under the radar by the Evernote, Onenote, Ubernote, craze.
Plus all the web collaboration and planner and web note programs.

Yet it might fill a hybird niche very nicely.  Anybody using it?
Should we put in some pics?

Here is why NoteZilla seems is becoming my desktop note program.
(The notes themselves are a WIP.)

The purpose is to show how NoteZilla can become a full-page and multi-page (tree) columned note system.
Using their memoboard structure, which is not in Stickies and PNote.

Have not found that it has a snap-to-grid type of arrangement.
And I don't think they have templates.
Tabs would be nice.

Those are all potential extras to the basic utility.

No forum, lots of updates recently

And have not tested out the push sending to other puters (likely they need licenses).

For this purpose of notes, RTF, with columns and a tree structure, NoteZilla can be a fine tool.
The top and left can be made bigger or sent right to the edge.

(Also seems as good as anybody, so far, for web page notes.)

btw ... NoteZilla, PNote and Stickies all take pictures from the clipboard.

PNote control manager (manager) has a full but cluttered icon bar without text, Stickies has nothing there,
NoteZilla is very good (see the pic.)

====================================================

NoteZilla and othes.jpg

Architecture difference.
PNotes and NoteZilla work with a Window API name, and allow the use of * (and ? wildcard in PNote) for name flexibility.

The Internote note is the most persistent (not dependent on focus) and quickest in addition to having the nicest url architecture.  And keeps a relative position on the webpage.

NoteZilla and PNote keep a window position (which is better? sort of depends).  NoteZilla has been very active recently.
Internote is the least pleasant, with minimal features and I was frustrated a bit by the resizing.

The PNote pinning has hit some snags.  Hit an SQL exception and a difficulty in actually bringing up the pinning window aspect in the Manage section or from the note.  However, still some potential and now it seems stabilized.

So far none of the three is fully comfortable, all have some potential.  If I was choosing one, probably NoteZilla, even though paid $ (I own a #7 license and would upgrade to 8, currently on trial.)

*** NoteZilla has a good Memoboard or Whiteboard implementation ***
.. this may be largely my answer to a column notepad.  May combine well with push networking. (Would be nice to have export to server-web page.)

So-so explanation:

Organizing sticky notes inside memoboards (folders) in Notezilla 8 for Windows

Some of these might be good for webpages, some might be good for the column-based notepad.

Stickies - from web page, apparently wildcard similar to PNote and NoteZilla
http://tomrevell.con...y&num=1357839534
There is not yet a comparable memoboard to NoteZilla.

Onenote

Diigo - part of a larger environment, found the implementation of stickies awkward
FloatNotes - Firefox extension - not really active

Web Page Sticky Notes (Beta) - Chrome only
Page Stickies - Chrome
Note Anywhere - Chrome
Sticky Notes Collector - Chrome
Sidenotes - Chrome

Syncpad for Simplenotes - extension says Chrome only - has a whiteboard implementation to check that is multi-browser

non-functional

Is Evernote capable of helping with either try?

Create Note Links For Easy Access Later
http://www.makeuseof...te-kick-ass-service/

Thus a url implementation.  Worth a try. It seems, though, that you would not have an easy ability to have the web page remember the notes, short of a distinct sticky anyway.  Is that right?

(Listhings and Lino.it might be able to work with a url implementation, similarly combined with a sticky, since a page has a distinct url.)

Evernote: And how about the columned full page view?

General Software Discussion / ok download sites

Note that freewarebb is still on the list.  Wrongly.

================================

Should have an alternative to go to the author's download site, without too many clicks.
Tested with CCleaner
e.g.
bleeping computer - "author"
Download Crew - "Developer
File Forum - "Publisher"
FileHippo - "Technical-->Author"
Lo4d - "Publisher"
NoNags - ".. from author's link" and Homepage
Portable Freeware - "Website"
Snapfiles - "Publisher"
Softpedia - "Developed by---> More applications by" (not obvious)
TechSpot - "Direct Download"

Ninite has no url to site, it is a batch installer.  See the problem mentioned below. Even with the best intentions, batch installation is questionable for the individual user.

Otherwise, everybody is acceptable.

PortableApps works with SourceForge.  SourceForge has .. " (name) web site" on mirrored sites (e.g. Sumatra PDF). I didn't realize the degree of SourceForge problem beginning in 2013 (before that problems were limited, e.g. PDFCreator) :
http://www.ghacks.ne...wnloads-with-adware/

================================

If they warn about potential problems in the install, that would be good.
e.g. - Snapfiles on CCleaner
"Offers to install promotional, third party components (e.g. browser toolbar)."

================================

And if they have a forum, that is a plus.

PortableApps
Portable Freeware
TechSpot

================================

They should avoid errors.
http://portableapps....-tdsskiller-portable
Kaspersky said to be McAfee (ok, maybe an oversight, it just struck me as odd)

================================

Any automated batch site is problematic.

"I liked what I read about Ninite, and tried it. As a test, I took only one program, Chrome. It loaded as my default browser, without asking, and it also unchecked the box in Firefox which says to always check to see that it is the default browser. In case that isn't bad enough, it put an 'exception' in my FIREWALL, allowing Chrome/Google to contact my PC from the internet, again, without telling/asking me. I can't say I would recommend Ninite."
https://discuss.howt...s-the-proof/23962/67

MajorGeeks has always had a problem of far too many unrelated download buttons that can be crapware. (Whether or not they have any direct problems.)

================================

Any site that hosts a crapware-malware companies software is not as concerned as you would like.
The following have one or more Uniblue programs - (Perhaps they should be contacted.)

Download Crew
FileForum -
Lo4d
Softpedia
TechSpot

================================

BleepingComputer could be on the list, even though they only have a small number.
Since they do a lot of downloads and are among the leaders of providing tools and discussion.

Some clubby type groups like Wugnet may be good too.

(However, the Windows Club carries right below the title an ad for a Uniblue fixit-registry scam.|
 Worse, it looks like it might be a direct Uniblue ad.  Talk about a self-defeating position.)

The article is interesting, they say FileHippo has installers.  Some discussion.
Freewarefiles (which Gizmo below recommends, noting ads though) also said to be off-base.

Nice list.. ready for bookmark action.

NoNags
http://www.nonags.com/

Some go out of their way to send you to the source site:
http://www.freewaregenius.com/

I know Sourceforge can allow the people they host to have bundled junk.  I'm not aware that they add anything.

Hi,

This is quite a thread.  The type where Donationcoder really shines.

A lot of this could use pictures, and or youtube, to see how the program is used.

And if Rightnote had more vibrant discussion, I think it would have many more customers.

Some of the security software people allow Wilders to host their forums, with decent moderation.  It would be nice if programs like Rightnote, MyBase, Personal Backup, Treepad, Free Commander, Revo Uninstaller, Teamviewer and others had such a home, preferably with the authors involved.

(Consider this an idea for someone who has or wants to set up an Xenforo or vBulletin type of forum.)

Internote is a long-standing sticky note Firefox extension that does a good job in allowing you to decide which pages get the note.

However it is rudimentary in other ways.

Although there is a good notes page on Sourceforge.
http://internote.sou...net/help30/en-US.xml
(Ironically, that page itself went blank on me when it was given a sticky!)

There are many sticky note alternatives, that can be either involved with your

a) desktop
b) sticking to a Window (as defined by Windows API functions, with some variations)
c) your specific webpages on a site (e.g. Listhings) to see through the browser
d) external webpages

These may be dedicated sticky note programs, or various utilities like Diigo or CintaNotes or this and that. And I am wondering who has a web page identity function (d) that is most comparable to Internote? Such a program does not have to have other functions, or sticky note functions (e.g. a,b,c).

See the pic.

Thanks!

Internote is good, I have a note to the current developer out. However it is largely dormant, the last update seems to be 2011, has only color of text and background for the full note as RTF styling (in a nice flipside implementation). And I find the mouse resizing-width function to work awkwardly.
