General Software Discussion / good software review site
« on: August 12, 2006, 05:47 AM »
This site looks good. But I wonder why they keep different areas as different domain names...
Have you ever been confused about which software to buy? Have you spent hours online or at the store trying to decrypt the marketing mumbo jumbo? We provide in-depth product reviews and comparisons so you never have to wonder again.

Oh, it seems that the preview doesn't show images... but the actual post does...

Hmm, I don't know if I mentioned smarty uninstaller before? It works for me, although I haven't compared it with the rest...

http://www.winnertweak.com/uninstaller/

It takes a long time to do all the checkings but it seems pretty exhaustive. And to date it hasn't screwed my registry trying to clean it... so that's good.

PS: how do you attach screenshots? Do you have to upload them to a server first, then unclude an img link? I'm trying the "link inline img" options, but nothing shows in the preview...

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: A new name

I like clipatron :)
although the patron part is ugly...
ClipCaptor sounds good.

How about breaking out the clip-XXX thing.
memento *reference to the movie of this guy who had no short-term memory/-* and variations could be interesting...

1655
yay! You made the options window wider! There goes my problem with windows 'large' fonts! Cool!
*maybe another undocumented bugfix* (well, it wasn't even a bug since very few people would even notice....

1656
Wow, Thanks a lot for all the answers.
I knew about adobe PS  Magic Wand Tool, I think I have used it in the past.
I uspected that this would be a non-trivial, non-automatizable process :). And yes, the pics I had in mind do have complex backgrounds. I guess it'd be easier to get a bunch of face pictures that are either already cropped or on a neutral, homogeneous background.

Thanks a lot again!

1657
The scenario:
typical photo of a person against the background.
I'm interested in separating (cropping) figure from background, in an automatic (or semi-automatic) way. If possible, I'd like a program that could do this in batch mode.

Is there such a thing? I tried Xara extreme, but it seems you have to draw the boundaries yourself...
Thanks a lot

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Very simple timeclock utility
« on: August 08, 2006, 07:21 AM »
hmm,
Doublebogey, as you add functionality to this program, it starts resembling one of my favorites:

visual timeanalyzer:
http://www.neuber.co...eanalyzer/index.html

I plan to do a minireview at some point.
It doesn't let you log when you stop working and go for a walk, but there is an option to 'add notes to day view' that could be used to keep that kind of log.

The 'day view' in '14 days' is my favorite to look at when I wonder where my time went recently. And the fact that it shows an average time online is terribly useful if you are hooked to DONATION CODER :D.

Living Room / how about a donation to locate 3.0?
« on: August 07, 2006, 11:04 AM »
Hi,

I was thinking that the developer of locate (it is a solo operation!) has managed to do something that big guys like Microsoft didn't: get HD indexing right.

I remember that here at DONATION CODER we donated something like $100 to autohotkey. I think a similar action (maybe smaller? depends on the # of users) would be good for locate, as it has many admirers in this site. I'd hate seeing M$ buying and cancelling that project (as could be the case with systernals).

What do you think?

1660
can sbSE do that for SFTP (SSH?). Really?

1661
ok, I finally downloaded this IBM CDP for files thing.
The program is in java, and works from within a browser.

It seems very well thought of.
You can include/exclude files by extension or by directory.

I'll post more once I try it further.

patthecat, if you can do the same, that'd be great.

I have to share this with you. The clarity of Paul Graham is just scary. He has nailed the problem he writes about! I find that pretty much every paragraph is absolute brilliance. Why is it that so few people do what they love?

http://paulgraham.com/love.html

I think this topic blends with the entire DC philosophy.

1664
Great, F-Secure is the one I use.

1665
I like the idea.
Maybe starting a google calendar where we all could add and remove tasks (each of us with a different name and color) could offer a nice visual index of progress. The points and scoreboard, I guess it would have to be independently coded anyway. We might need a moderator to assign points?

1666
Carol, did you do that banner in your sig with webStyle?

1667
the installer gives me an unspecified error (?).
I use Dopus anyway. I'll try to entice those guys to program something similar pointing them at this thread :) that would be great. Nice find db90h.

1668
patthecat, good find.
I tried downloading the ibm one, but they didn't let me register to dl the free code. No idea why (Try again later)

Also, Ideally I want a program that can keep a copy of EVERY FILE _in_ _use_

Maybe I should have said "opened". Some backup applications do not copy opened files, or do so only after coughing up for a pricey extension (hello, genie backup :) ).

The reason why I think this is important is that I have lost my working files serveral times while editing them due to applications that do not care enought to let you save a security copy automatically. Adding real-time monitoring (e.g., mark "myMostImportantWork.txt" for monitoring means that everytime I open it, an extra copy is saved in the backup, and in real time, every change I make is saved. No need to wait for the scheduled backup to kick in. That may be troublesome, and it may make for a lot of files with tiny differences... but it may be worth it.

Unfortunately a backup cannot force the application to do autosaves. If you use e.g. powerpoint with no autosave, and edit a lot before hitting ctrl+S, you may be in for trouble. I wonder if all the changes would stay in memory (just wait for the crash:) ) or there is some temporary file somewhere...

1670
Also, Ideally I want a program that can keep a copy of EVERY FILE in use in the system. E.g., if any application crashes and no backup was made by the app. itself, this backup program should take care of things. Bye bye crappy MS studio, etc crashes, and "the computer ate my homework" excuses...

Here are some discussions:
http://yabb.jriver.c...ex.php?topic=34807.0

http://www.lifehacke...rectories-163469.php

but in general the programs discussed are pretty weak.
Here are my requeriments, met by NONE of the programs:

(1) Incremental backups
(2) recovery from incremental backups to any point in time automatically (!). See https://www.donation...pic=4532.0;topicseen
(3) rar compression, (I'd be nice to have the 10%-20% redundancy as extra safety againts corruption, plus better encryption capabilities).
(4) If using compression, I want indexing (find all versions of a file) and fast. Otherwise, I'll trust locate 3.0
(5) reliability
(6) sftp
(7) Monitoring. I want to be able to say: everytime a file in this folder changes, make a copy.
(8) versioning
(9) compare changes (a la beyond compare) of text files, highlighting syntax, and enabling live editing.

What are your thoughts? I know no program does all this. But, any combination that does all this?
Currently I'm using syncBackSE (no compression) + locate 3.0 + webdrive.

1672
agreed. I mean, I could clob together a perl script that used the OS copy to do that instead of doing it by hand. Something sounds terribly wrong. No designer can be this off the mark. I'm sure SyncBackSE does this ??

1673
I was trying to recover an incremental backup using syncBacSE and couldn't do it straight away,  so I posted this to their forum:

[
Hi, I have read a few threads on this but I still cannot get it to work.

I have a 'fast backup' (incremental) profile to backup my laptop everyday.
I need to move all the backed up info to a new laptop. I do this every month or so to keep the laptops synchronized.

I installed sbSE on both, copied the profile to both, and tried a restore on the destination one.

The problem is that I'm prompted for a single origin directory... that's not right. I want sbSE to realize that this is an incremental backup and act in consequence, copying the newest version of each file (traversing the versioned list of folders, with variables -dates-).

If this is not possible, I need to know so I can go back to testing other software.
thanks
To my surprise mickyj answered:
Hi, as with all backup software, when you restore from incremental or differential you must restore from your oldest backup, then next oldest, etc.

I thought the program would do this for me:

And you have to do that 'by hand'?
This is the typical task that can be automated.
There should be an option to do that, don't you think?

I'd like to point sbSE to a directory that contains the incremental backups and get out of it the full contents, totally up to date. Otherwise, there is no point.

In the meantime, I'll use a synch profile AND keep the incremental backups as two separate entities (double the space!).

Thanks

Do you do this with any other program? It sounds silly to have to do it ba hand.
What is your stragegy?

Thanks

Best ScreenCaster / Re: Open Source Alternative (CamStudio)
« on: July 26, 2006, 10:57 AM »
wow, nice find considering how expensive these programs are.
I have an old version of camstasia that doesn't even export to swf and the upgrade (1.0.1 to current) was $150. bye camstasia!

Fins on head? ribs? nose holes? only one dorsal fin on one side? A pelvis? a neck and shoulders?

Nothing in here makes evolutionary sense. Even for an alien evolutionary theory. This looks like the work of human imagination (we are not that good at imagining really original monsters, most of the time we cut and paste pieces of living creatures).

Why do most pics of aliens have 2 eyes, hands, etc? There is no reason to believe that an intelligent enough lifeform evolved anywhere outside earth will come to those solutions.

I think this is a fake.
