Hi,

does any of you guys know a web app, Android app or Windows program that can shuffle around parts of an image - like with puzzle pieces, but just squares - in an easy way? Customizable, if possible.

While an app like Pixelot pixelates an image, I'm looking for something to move the parts of an image around while maintaining all the content.

mouser's challenges are what got me back into coding in the first place
mouser will love to read that... I did! 8) So cool when small things lead to lovely bigger things later on.

In the evenings I run the town news web page, and dream of finding the time to complete my groundbreaking software project and retire at 50! :)
Hey skrommel :) Your coding snacks were wonderful, wishing you the project success that you aim for!

Hello skwire, I'm still using Scud! :) Love it!

Should you ever consider an update, these things would be what I'd love to see:
1) Prevent Scud from being closed when ESC is hit
2) Allow the filter to contain more than one word (now you can filter for "Blue", but not "Blue 2010")
3) A 4th button at the buttom: "Launch random file" (to be able to use it for a folder that contains both audio and video files which should be randomly launched)

Hello there!  8)

Yes, it has been a while... I liked the idea of you, mouser, to reach out to "the missing 122". I've been very busy with other stuff so I haven't been to the site... but I'm still using ScreenshotCaptor, even though I probably need to update it!

And hello tomos!  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: database program needed (CRM?)
« on: October 15, 2012, 01:28 PM »
>Couple of questions:
> How much time is he willing to commit to learning a software package? Most CRM software takes some training, along with forming new personal work habits.

Yeah, that should work...

> Is it just for him - or for his entire company?

For him and one or two employees.

> Does he need to have access to his data from anywhere?

Probably not, that feature would be more of a "nice to have".

> What's the primary goal for him? Generating leads? Maintaining extensive contact data and call histories? Etc...

Using it for decision-making and later on also for mailings, inviting customers for a little event, stuff like that. (As far as I know.)

> Does he have a budget for this?

Well, he's the owner, he'll just create a budget.  :D

Contro mentioned Goldmine. If his needs are for a solid basic relationship management system, Goldmine has been around for years. I have a few clients using it, and they are quite happy with what it does for them. They offer a free trial so it wouldn't cost him anything to check it out and see if it fits the bill. There's plenty of good info on the Goldmine site. The case studies provide a good idea of what something like Goldmine can do.

http://www.goldmine.com says it's "Just $4.65 a Day", making it quite expensive. Also, it doesn't seem to be available in German.

General Software Discussion / database program needed (CRM?)
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:22 AM »
Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend who's looking for some kind of database program. He wants to put all his customers into it and also add the potential they still have (the services they still could buy from him but haven't yet). When all the information is in the system, he wants to be be able to - with just hitting a button or two - get results like "With customer X there's potential for 7 services" and maybe also "Those services have a revenue potential of $ Y for customer X."

At first I suggested Excel to him, but then he told me that later on he wants to add stuff like "Who gave the most referrals that resulted in new customers?", "When did we last talk with this customer?", etc., making it more likely a database of some kind is needed? Or a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) program?

If possible the software should be available in German too.

Any ideas? Of course it should also be reasonably priced and easy to learn/use.  8)

All the best to you... I know how bad one can feel in situations like yours. It's important to not lose trust in yourself.

Humans are quite wonderful beings. I know a guy who was so broke he literally lived in the woods for a few years... just protected by an old construction trailer (he didn't want any government support). In the summer that thing was like a sauna, and in the winter he had to get up twice in the middle of the night to put more wood onto the fire. Now - 3 years later - he drives a very nice Porsche and lives in a real house again. He just never gave up...

If you not need to shut down you Chrome daily there is no real need to close tabs (I move pc to a sleep at night, not shut down it).
Closing tabs take time (actually a lot), and mental energy, so i prefer open new one if i need, and even if i know that they already open - it is faster to open new one than to search old (even with tabs quick search extensions). And I clean up everything only once in a week or two, all at once. This is real clean up session:

(you maybe already saw this video as it is referenced from TO overview video)

I haven't had time yet to check out Tabs Outliner in detail, but I just watched that video. I love the sheep icon being used for the clone option! So cool...  ;D

Wow, thanks guys - lots to read! :-)

I've tried Too Many Tabs for Chrome, but currently I prefer to use Firefox because it has an option to only load a tab when you click onto it - so the browser has to load way less tabs when you reopen it (with tons of tabs saved from the last session).

Tab groups in firefox - Ctrl+Shift+E.

Haha, I once hit that accidentally and thought I broke something!  :D Not really self-explanatory, but since you brought it up I found http://support.mozil...groups-organize-tabs - the video there explains it quite nicely.

I have used that but it inexplicably seems to get wiped of the tabs in the groups, so I can't rely on it.
If you have multiple firefox *windows*, you need to make sure the one with your groups is the last one you close, since the built in session thingy only saves the session for the last closed FF windows.

This is definitely not optimal, and has bitten me a couple of times, but I've kinda gotten used to it :)

How does it behave when you kill the whole programm with something like Sysinternals Process Explorer? Firefox (like Chrome) is very good at auto-saving all tabs when you 'close' it like that, but does that apply to Tab Groups too?

Hi,

what solutions do you know of to prevent browser tab clutter? Maybe I'm just too curious, but what frequently happens is that I look up something on the web and suddenly I have 3 more browser windows and a dozen new tabs open... not all of which I can (or want to) finish reading right away. What do do?

There *must* be a better way than the whole system becoming slow because you have 150 tabs open... :-D Is there something like a GTD approach, built into the browser? Like 'putting them to the side' ("maybe read later") if it's unlikely you'll read them soon, or "todo" if you plan to read them the next day, maybe with a browser extension?

Just saving the links in a .txt file is a solution I tried in the past, but that didn't work for me... way too much copy&pasting for my taste. I also tried to bookmark those pages, but what happened mostly was that I never came back to them...

Living Room / Any designer around? I need one image designed.
« on: January 11, 2012, 03:47 AM »
Hi,

I need one image designed, a combination of a photo, 2 boxes, and some text. Because my skills are not in that area I have no idea how long that would take.

I'm willing to offer something in return.

If you also have webdesign skills that would be a plus (since the image will be used online), but that's not needed.

You can reply in this thread or PM me. I'm looking forward to hear from you.

163
That sadly won't work since a lot of the files are quite personal to me.

164
The script writes a history file to remember what it played. Let's say you got 15 files in your songlist. It won't repeat any file, until it played all 15 files. Then it erases its history file and starts again. Of course, this is not perfect. If you're in bad luck, file 15 and file 01 can be the same file. Guess such situations happen to you ocassionally, making you wonder why it's sometimes "less random".
I had that too once :) What I meant though is that I got the impression that the list itself is not always randomized, like when 2 files that are listed below each other (out of 50+ total) are picked directly after each other more often than what would feel random to me.

Since I don't know what randomization code/method you use I have no idea if that could influence it.

165
Not sure if this really is a bug, but I feel RandomPlayer could play stuff more random than it does. It's more of a feeling than an exact measure... so maybe it's just selective attention.  8)

166
Got a weird bug today... Scud would only use a small selection of subfolders to launch a file from, not ANY of the remaining subfolders (7 launches confirmed that). Yesterday it was still working properly, and I hadn't closed Scud (or rebooted) since.

After I ended and restarted Scud, it worked fine again.

167
No problem :) Thanks for the update!

168
Two minor bugs:

When you enter a folder with a "\" at the end of the path in the Folder input box, Scud works correctly, but pastes a path with two "\" ("\\") to the clipboard, which of course then doesn't work if you try to access it in Windows Explorer.

When you accidently remove the entry in the Folder input box, Scud still is able to randomly launch a file, but pastes an incomplete path to the clipboard.

169
Ah, didn't see that... interesting. :)

170
Oooh.... you made them now appear only after Alt is pressed - fancy! :D

Thanks for yet another update, looks great!

171
And the icon looks fuzzy again.

172
Great, looks good now! :)

More ideas:
- make Alt+f work as a shortcut to activate the Folder selection
- Alt+r --> Filter selection
- Alt+n --> Name
- Alt+p --> Path
- Alt+e --> Either

Done.  I also added Alt+C to toggle the clipboard option.  Please redownload.

I just noticed that all those six additions have no underlined 'trigger letter'. Pressing the listed button together with Alt works just fine, but the UI doesn't hint which letter to press.

173
Wow, thanks... that's *really* weird! You can *still* TAB out of the editing window and hit enter to send the email, even though there's no more visible send button there after the redesign!  :D

174
Great! Could you please use the font and font size you use for the Trout menus? It's better to read than the current one used in Scud now.

The only thing I do in my apps is put in code to ignore large-font DPI settings for GUI elements.  They're such a pain in the arse to code for, test, and support (just ask mouser).  In other words, I don't specifically change to a different font, I just restrict its size.

Hmm... please help me to understand. Yes, I have set Windows to larger than default with the fonts/DPI (whatever it's called), but how come then I can read the Trout menus comfortably while the Scud font size (which is smaller in comparison) is a bit eye-straining to read?
