Hi!

I've used FreeMind (http://freemind.sour.../index.php/Main_Page) in the past, and it was good enough for what I needed, but since it requires Java I'm now looking for an alternative. Preferably freeware for Windows (and maybe Android), but maybe a free web solution will do.

Any recommendations? I found these with good reviews:

https://www.mindmeister.com is a (free when you only need up to 3 maps) web solution. Android version too (https://play.google....sterlabs.mindmeister).

https://coggle.it is another online tool, 1 map is free (but not with all advanced features available). Sign-In with Google and a good auto-save feature, I like it. Check out the screenshot there and those on https://coggle.it/gallery - beautiful! :-*

https://bubbl.us/ online tool, very easy to use, you can try it without having to register (free when you only need up to 3 maps)

http://www.xmind.net site is 'down' (maintenance)

Living Room / quick poll, please vote! (2 questions only)
« on: February 25, 2017, 07:04 AM »
Hello,

research around the question "what if you could see into the future?" was mentioned on the radio the other day (I forgot which university it was), and I'd like to find out what my fellow forum users think about the topic. :)

It's about events* in your life that personally/ directly affect you; please vote in both polls:

http://vote.pollcode.com/69469933

*by event I mean something extraordinary like meeting the love of your life or crashing your car, not Adele releasing a song you dislike. 8)

Hello,

I have two external HDs (same model) and mirror everything from #1 to #2 with a file synchronizer tool every now and then. But Windows Explorer now tells me that there are about 5.8 GB more on #2. Huh?

I then used Beyond Compare to compare both drives, but wasn't able to find the difference. Everything looks the same.

What can cause this? I never saw this in the past.

General Software Discussion / Question re/ future software project
« on: January 04, 2017, 10:12 AM »
Hello and a happy new year!

For a future software project around data entry and basic file edits, I'm pondering what would be a good solution for these requirements:

- should work for Windows+Apple, maybe even for Android
(So my first thought was a browser-based solution might work...)

- users should be able to use it offline [syncing data when being online again later]
(...but then I read that Chrome can only handle a relatively small cache for web apps, not a few 100 MB)

I won't be coding this myself, at the moment I only need some general ideas of how to set something like this up. How would you approach something like this?

General Software Discussion / Windows 10: C: (SSD) usage is 100%
« on: December 12, 2016, 04:38 AM »
Hi,

a few days after Windows 10 installed its Anniversary update I noticed in the task manager that C: is used 100% virtually constantly, writing about 3 MB/s continually. A reboot didn't help. It's not Windows Defender and I couldn't find any other task to blame. According to the task manager it's "System" that's doing this (while mostly using 1-2% CPU time).

How to fix this... Any ideas? I don't believe this can be good for the SSD.

Hello,

I have a nasty BSOD problem with atikmpag.sys (and my Radeon 5650). Windows can only be started in Safe Mode (and a really bad screen resolution), but after spending many hours to look for solutions and trying some of them I'm confident that what I now need is to install the CCC 15.7 WHQL.

Sadly, I can only find version 15.7.1 and that's not fixing the BSOD.

Does anyone here have better search skills or the version 15.7 installer still on their HD?

Hello,

Maple JB for Android is rather good for what I need when not at home, now I'm looking for something for Windows. Does anyone know a good one? Freeware if possible, I don't need it frequently enough to justify a big purchase price.

Presets (i.e., "play at 1.6x speed") and an easy way to increase/decrease speed would be great. Maybe even an option to delete the file after listening. And if I could use it to launch a file (to be played) directly from Windows Explorer (like with mp3directcut)... now that would be perfect! 8)

Hello!

I have several scripts that load a website and interact with it in some way. Because it was the easiest-to-code solution, I'm using "sleep" for the script to wait until the site has loaded. That sucks though, because load times depend on Windows and server load and so I either have to use really long "sleep" times (zzzZzZzz...) or short "sleep" times that then cause the script to fail because the site hasn't yet fully loaded.

I'd love to be able to use a solution that detects if a given pixel has color #whatever (I imagine something like "PixelGetColor, 500, 600" and "IfPixelColor = ..."). I googled around and there doesn't seem to be a good solution for this yet. Or maybe Chrome can report back to AHK somehow that it has finished loading that tab?

Any ideas?  :)

After a long time I started to use Process Tamer again. I like it, it's just that all the 0% Chrome processes clutter up its GUI, even though the "hide <1% normal CPU" option is enabled. (Yes, I use *many* tabs!) Any chance you could fix that?

Hi,

my goal is to have a single web page online that contains some text, an image and a YouTube video. Other than that, I'd love to have buttons that reveal/hide additional content when clicked (is that done with HTML 5?). Are there tools available online to do that?

My HTML coding skills are roughly zero and the result shouldn't look like it has been put together by a monkey on crack.  8)

I already have a web server where I plan to put it.

Just wanted to share my appreciation for this extension with you guys. It's faster/more resource-friendly than the well-known ad blockers and - like them - allows you to define elements you want to block on pages. I rarely need that, but I love to have that option when I do.

Hi,

I'm looking for a small program that can alert me in some unobstrusive way* when the free RAM (as shown in the Windows task manager) drops below a certain level. Is there something like that out there?

*for example by changing its 'system tray' area icon from blue to red

38
Hi,

does any of you guys know a web app, Android app or Windows program that can shuffle around parts of an image - like with puzzle pieces, but just squares - in an easy way? Customizable, if possible.

While an app like Pixelot pixelates an image, I'm looking for something to move the parts of an image around while maintaining all the content.

General Software Discussion / database program needed (CRM?)
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:22 AM »
Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend who's looking for some kind of database program. He wants to put all his customers into it and also add the potential they still have (the services they still could buy from him but haven't yet). When all the information is in the system, he wants to be be able to - with just hitting a button or two - get results like "With customer X there's potential for 7 services" and maybe also "Those services have a revenue potential of $ Y for customer X."

At first I suggested Excel to him, but then he told me that later on he wants to add stuff like "Who gave the most referrals that resulted in new customers?", "When did we last talk with this customer?", etc., making it more likely a database of some kind is needed? Or a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) program?

If possible the software should be available in German too.

Any ideas? Of course it should also be reasonably priced and easy to learn/use.  8)

Hi,

what solutions do you know of to prevent browser tab clutter? Maybe I'm just too curious, but what frequently happens is that I look up something on the web and suddenly I have 3 more browser windows and a dozen new tabs open... not all of which I can (or want to) finish reading right away. What do do?

There *must* be a better way than the whole system becoming slow because you have 150 tabs open... :-D Is there something like a GTD approach, built into the browser? Like 'putting them to the side' ("maybe read later") if it's unlikely you'll read them soon, or "todo" if you plan to read them the next day, maybe with a browser extension?

Just saving the links in a .txt file is a solution I tried in the past, but that didn't work for me... way too much copy&pasting for my taste. I also tried to bookmark those pages, but what happened mostly was that I never came back to them...

Living Room / Any designer around? I need one image designed.
« on: January 11, 2012, 03:47 AM »
Hi,

I need one image designed, a combination of a photo, 2 boxes, and some text. Because my skills are not in that area I have no idea how long that would take.

I'm willing to offer something in return.

If you also have webdesign skills that would be a plus (since the image will be used online), but that's not needed.

You can reply in this thread or PM me. I'm looking forward to hear from you.

42
Ok... now Gmail 'upgraded' my account too. I like the overall design changes, but why oh why did they remove the send (etc.) buttons below the editing area when you compose a new email? I used to TAB through the recepient, topic and text input areas and then use TAB again to send it (almost like here i the forum).

I tried a few Google searches, but couldn't find out how to send a mail now without touching the mouse... is there a way?

43
Hi!

Wouldn't it be fun if you had a little launcher tool that would ask you for a path (and you could either click through to a folder or just paste a path into the window) and it would search for all media matching the given extension(s) and then randomly launch one (with the media player association you set in Windows)? I'd love it! :)

Optional extras:
- put the full path of the file launched into the Windows clipboard
- a customizable list of file types to pick from, somewhat like in Locate (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0) so you don't have to enter all the different video or sound file types manually

Hi,

is there a tool or web service to convert MOBI or EPUB files to PDF while influencing/adjusting font size?

Screenshot Captor / small file name length-related bug
« on: November 25, 2011, 06:30 AM »
The longest name an image can have in SC's left column (the path being M:\ScreenshotCaptor\) is

1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345.png

But in the "Name:" area towards the bottom of SC's window, the max length is this:

1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890.png

Trying to enter a longer name there just won't work.

46
Hi,

can I use SC to add a THICK white border around an image? Say half an inch thick? I only know about the option to add a very thin border.

47
Hi,

I'm looking for a (probably/hopefully) very simple extension. I started to use TiddlyWiki recently (https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=28700.0) and like it quite a bit now. The one thing that I miss is that Firefox's text entry box (where I type right now for example) doesn't support highlighting of TiddlyWiki's hyperlinks, and it's easy to accidently type one, because they not only can have a [[hyperlink name 123]] format, but also CamelCase (which *can* be quite handy):

CamelCase

New words created by smashing together capitalized words.

CamelCase is the original wiki convention for creating hyperlinks, with the additional requirement that the capitals are followed by a lower-case letter; hence “AlabamA” and “ABc” will not be links. More information on CamelCase:

http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiCase
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CamelCase

I forgot in which editor I saw such highlighting, but my guess is that doing some kind of highlighting/color coding with everything that's either [[hyperlink text xyz]] or CamelCase should be easy to do in a Firefox extension. Is it?

Gazillions of TiddlyWiki users will love you forever!  :D

Hi again,

is there a way to set on which desktop a new browser window opens? I run Firefox on my big desktop, but sometimes it opens a new window on my 2nd desktop (my other display) - whether I use Ctrl+n or an AutoHotkey script.

Even though it's not *too* bad to then move it with Windows 7's Win+Left/Right key combo, I'd prefer Firefox would ALWAYS open it on the same desktop (my main desktop).

49
Hi,

the Firefox folks invented a Damn Cool Thing (TM): the "Don't load tabs until selected" option (http://support.mozil...kb/Session%20Restore):

Tip: If you want to speed up the startup, check Don't load tabs until selected so that only the last selected tab is loaded.

Works like a charm, love it! Is there a way to get this behaviour in Chrome, too? I couldn't find an option, and neither an extension for that. :(

Hi,

I need to organize a lot of (simple) text in a way where navigating within one document won't becomes a mess anymore. Scrolling up and down and just using the search to jump around doesn't work well here (>2000 lines of text) anymore. ;)

If I recall correctly I once read about an approach where you can add internal 'hyperlinks' in a simple text editor: like adding an overview somewhere in the file with simple links that jump to a given paragraph. And next to that paragraph you can add a link back to the overview.

Any ideas? I still need to be able to update the text easily, so creating a PDF won't work for example. Since this solution has to work offline, would some simple kind of local wiki work? (I just recalled that in wikipedia you could simply use "== XYZ ==" to create such links (as headlines).) Which wiki is free and easy to install, easy to use? The only feature I probably need is an ability to adjust the font size (in the editor and when viewing the result).
