Living Room / DuckDuckGo as viable Open Source builder
« on: March 06, 2015, 08:42 AM »
We all know how Google made its way to fame and fortune.
We also know that is no longer as "good" as we once thought it was or would be...

How about considering DuckDuckGo as an alternative for better privacy, "open source" as well as a community oriented service? https://duck.co/

Living Room / Looking for Livestream alternative
« on: January 25, 2015, 02:57 PM »
In Arkansas far West where nothing seems to be faster than 3mbps upload at present time,
and Livestream (which requires a minimum 30mbps) is way out of the range...
Was wondering if hosting a non-direct (as opposed to live stream) video file on Dropbox (or other cloud service) would be a viable possibility?

Living Room / Open Source News anyone ?
« on: January 09, 2015, 08:27 PM »
Okay, a similar thread was posted at Gizmo's (no catches).
I know there are Corbett fans here but i think James Corbett deserves some real "open" support.
http://www.corbettreport.com/
Not only is he Canadian (hé), but a Canuck living in Japan (of all places!).
So, why would James be better than others like Glenn Beck and the likes?
Well, one, he doesn't step over anybodies toes (Sean Hannity ring a bell?).
He lets his interviewed people talk without criss-crossing over them with his own opinions.

So... where is the FED listed in your telephone book?

DC Website Help and Extras / Has forum code changed?
« on: November 07, 2014, 08:29 AM »
Hi,

Over the last few days, i've been getting a weird "autopaging" thingy happening:
http://imagizer.imag...g537/8519/KibEKA.png
Could it be the "autopager" addon for Firefox that is defective?

(sorry about having to download image file).

Should we really worry about it (again!) and change all our passwords?

I picked this gem up at Gizmo's TechAlert
Coming from a die hard Firefox fan... this is humbling.  :o

The so-called Australis update was a cruncher but this addon for Chrome makes me want to tilt to the "dark side".

Just noticed that Martin at GHacks posted something about it too.

Living Room / What about Condaleezza Rice and Dropbox?
« on: July 25, 2014, 09:51 PM »
Ed Snowden claims that Condaleezza Rice (NSA spy) now works for Dropbox.
Should we worry now about our data there or just "surrender" like many have with Google?

Recently "upgraded" laptop to Windows 7 64bit with SSD.
Installed Outlook 2013 and in the past, was able to search contacts immediately via Windows super key (search).
With my "new" laptop, this doesn't work anymore...
Can FARR be configured with a script or some other option to do this?

« on: February 13, 2014, 07:59 AM »
With Firefox (Chrome) Australis on the way soon, i'm considering viable alternatives like Seamonkey, Palemoon and even K-Meleon which is now at 74b2 !

Anyone recall this lightweight browser?

Living Room / What keys can't fit in your pant pockets?
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:33 AM »
Don-keys and mon-keys! ha!  :P

BTW, i think i'm giving up on Linux.
No matter which version I've tried, they all have some hick (especially with peripherals).
Windows 7 is just too hard to beat!

Living Room / LXLE Linux anyone?
« on: March 22, 2013, 06:59 AM »
We haven't discussed any Linux stuff much lately...

LXLE is a nice Ubuntu distro i've recently stumbled upon.
It's got a few glitches (mostly on fresh install such as direct install which fails at present time; doesn't seem to capture profile image on install) but other then that, i find it to be the most lightweight and fastest distro at present time.

One of the things that keeps me from becoming 100% penguin user is the equivalent programs to Windows that aren't simply as good.
Any real Windows Explorer alternatives with file preview in Linux?

There are of course many other issues...

For whatever reason, there seems to be a new conflict with my Logitech headset and Youtube.
Sound comes on and off etc.
Tired of this battle, i was wondering if there's a way to have all Youtube clips (even embedded) open by default within VLC?

Someone might want to include FARR on the wish list.

I don't see too many of these giveaways anymore.

A little bird told me that Cintanotes is going to be on special at Bitsdujour pretty soon.

I found the initial price to be a very good deal (to not say "giveaway").
Apparently they will be increasing to $25 next time around.

Living Room / Is Linux just a hobby?
« on: May 21, 2012, 08:00 AM »
I could have said, "Is Linux for real?!"

I've spent some considerable time over the last week trying to get into Linux,
especially with LinuxMint which seems to be the second best after Ubuntu.

Decided to give the recent 201204 Debian edition a spin (learning steep is high) and it was hard to get it installed (dual boot).
My major problem with it was opening programs like Firefox, OpenOffice (oops! LibreOffice).
Thought it was bad on my Windows7 but they take forever to open even on Linux!
And... you can't press ctrl+shift+Esc to know if they're runnin' or not.
And then Firefox jams.
You click on the exit button, nothing happens.
Again, you can't ctrl+shift+Esc to see if it's going tilt or not.
And yet, i gave this Debian edition all the juice (and more!) that was required on installation.
Besides, many pages in Firefox never look as good as on Windows.

Then i decided to give LinuxMint's latest Maya Cinnamon edition a try.
Same problem.

Heck, my friend has Firefox running on an old XP and it performs twice as fast as on my system!  :-[

What gives? I don't know.

Running here on Windows 7 Home Ed. Intel Duo ; 2.52Ghz ; 4G memory with 500G hard disk.

General Software Discussion / Is Smilebox safe?
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:01 AM »
A few friends of mine use this Smilebox service:
http://www.smilebox.com/
recently acquired by hum... Incredimail:
http://www.imaging-r...NEWS/1312233180.html

I am weary about this Smilebox stuff since a friend recently caught a trojan of sorts.
My hunch (i could be wrong) is, she was invited to click on a link (via Smilebox?) and it got her.

Anyone have experience with this service?

I've read so much negative things about Incredimail, that anything that has to do with them i stay away from.

Is this negative attitude justified?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Can CH capture text + url in one shot?
« on: November 19, 2011, 12:30 PM »
Is there a way to configure CH to copy text + url from any browser in one click?
Similarly, can it do the same for a text from file (text + location on pc)?

BTW, IE9 identified CH as dangerous stuff!   :(

Find And Run Robot / FARR not a commonly downloaded program?
« on: October 15, 2011, 06:46 AM »
This is a good one!

After doing a fresh install of my good ol' Windows 7 Home,
i took IE out for a stroll to download one of my top 5 favorite programs (FARR).
After waiting a while for it to finish downloading,
IE tells me that it could be a dangerous program for it is not commonly downloaded?!
I couldn't install it straight from IE but did manager to find the Download folder and install it.
Of course, this happened prior to installing my AV program but still! What a... shinanigan!

Long live Firefox!
