General Software Discussion / Re: Double Standards
« on: December 14, 2006, 01:52 PM »
Yeah of course such a site exist. Should be made if not done already. They need some fighting back. As I see it all companies of Googles size want money and alternative is not any different. Why I said Google is smart, they do make loads of money and still come across as a friendly free service, opposite xxxx or yyyy. How internet works, many try to do the same but Google is more innovative than incompetent so they win  8) Notice how smoothly their backing up of Firefox have taken place. Ive only seen few people complain about Mozilla getting "dirty". Most seem to go Yeah cool, it is ok - we all like Google so thumbs up. Smart they are.

Google search is best for rare/specific keywords or a wicked advanced search, anything popular and it has the ability to stink. Commercial interests can be overwhelming. Im still looking for a Greasemonkey script that will take out those shopping hits, can be done with an extension but it does so much else I dont need. Google is definitely based on search AND advertising.

But Picasa, Google Earth/map, Gmail, Google Reader, Google Bookmarks, Google domain!, Google toolbar, Blogger, Google Analytics, Docs&Spreadsheets and what not  - crap? I dont think so - let them rule :) My brother is trying to make a blog/site of some sort so I just made a personal "group" where we can share uploads, "debate", share documents, whatever. Google delivers and is deadeasy to use. No MS login smell over them, not yet.

Forgot link to "Google behind the screens" http://video.google....e+behind+the+screens nice documentary about new monster. They only want to help you organize the worlds information, that is all!

Google are smart at what they do. There is such a thing as quality to think about as well. May be you prefer MS offers in Googles categories, many does not. I dont think they can be compared. Not that I have any illusions about Googles interests or goals. But they do not yet own any market, there are other players. They want to. Should it happen they have to make brilliant strategy maintaining "we are not evil" while silently controlling internet  8)

I thought MS gave room to other developers once they had almost total marketshare - and would not pick up interest until too much movement in wrong direction? Since you mention IE then remember Firefox is not only Firefox but also Google, in a way. Google have proven they can grow fast as hxxx. If web service mania gets more and more common, Google is also targeting businesses, Firefox use could potentially explode. If Google decides to promote Firefox big time then what to do? Scary thought for MS so they came up with IE7 because "we heard you" heh - perhaps also their "Live" stuff.

f0dder try Smoothwheel http://smoothwheel.mozdev.org/ does magic for "rendering" feel once set up. A bit like Opera which sprints in comparison. Cant be worse than default. Probably best to untick "use smooth scrolling" in options. Not much effect anyway.

154
Should not matter - except you miss the little extra speed in 2. On a noticable and similar level as IE6 vs. IE7 to my eyes. Dont need benchmarks for proof. And a billion bugfixes of course. You could see problem fixed in 2. Strange things can happen, didnt Firefox use to have some scripting problem with SMF forum? Was going into loop trashing servers? You only see zzzzz on this SMF forum or does it go for phpbb, vB as well? Check SMF site if not. Many people should be screaming. Ive not tried 1.5 vs. SMF 1.1 so cant tell. Anyway, best way is to exclude. Clean profile will point finger at extensions, perhaps extension mix - or not.

user_pref("extensions.checkCompatibility", false);
Throw that line in user.js so all extensions will "work", dump new 2.0.1 zipfile into Firefox folder. Easy to upgrade. Cant really think of any reason not to. Most gadgets have been upgraded by now.

May be he just got fed up with the many many retail/shareware products which are not worth paying/cracking? Got addicted to freeware and now cant see anything else. Unless payware is better why pay up sounds good to me.

I dont think those who base income on coding would release much freeware! Besides some of the software listed will eventually spin off in payware versions, some already are connected. Freeware could be a way of introducing/(beta)testing software at the marketplace.

156
http://tmp.garyr.net/help/ sorry looking page but take a look at the PDF file showing off Tab Mix Plus. TBE users need convincing  8) Extension is very actively developed, see forum - owns tab market as TBE once did.

Whatever you are missing after TMP you can get elsewhere - almost, TBE still has some unique stuff I guess.

157
You think repeating same object/script/whatever a gazillion times to show a numerical difference would answer why Firefox is 20x slower? Forget about browser benchmarks. Judge from experience, like you have done. I browse a lot of forums so would change to IE in a flash if I had to live with general problems of this kind. Anyone would so may be there is a problem to be fixed? 8) Open error console, sometimes point directly at problematic extension. List extensions, may be problem is known, being fixed. Many of them are buggy as hxxx though I have no idea what could cause this. Clean profile should not have problem of course, does it?

Lots of minor bugfixes in 2.0.1 which is close to release. May be try it out ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2.0.0.1-candidates/rc3 but I doubt it will help.

Cooliris has a version for IE. Not yet compatible with IE7 though http://www.cooliris....ite/download-ie.html Will install but not working. Also limited features compared to the one for Firefox.

General Software Discussion / Re: CPU Utilization Alerter ?
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:02 PM »
And you say that just as I realize it does not, heh. No cpu monitoring or Im blind. I was thinking of Dtaskmanager http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/, may be. Seems he speak of the feature in a computer translated readme.txt, cant really find it in program.

System Eye then. http://www.globalcli...enshots.php#settings Use Event editor to open taskmanger or whatever.

I guess you have Process Explorer http://www.microsoft...processexplorer.mspx

May be Usage Monitor http://www.veign.com...load_app.asp?app=110.

I think some Samurize scripts can do this as well.

Nice little screencast of new Firebug http://soylentfoo.jn...irebug-10-screencast Oops, site is down but video is up on Google already http://video.google....820657&q=firebug

Have to check for updates manually it seems, Beta 4 now http://www.getfirebug.com/downloads.html

Firebug has a load time analyzer build in, "Net" button. With Beta 3 I got very slow Firefox when Firebug was enabled on all sites.  May be a beta bug or I have to disable Net monitoring under "Options" button. Options menu change according to chosen function.

On the other hand Googles Personal Search page is neat. You can see your xxxxx searches, which search engines were used, which results you clicked. All this also spread over time with calendar, 7, 30 etc. days stats or Personal Trends. Almost a dairy. Data is not hidden but part of their Service mania and of course also part of "optimzing" personal advertising/searching.

That was searching but what about Gmail, Docs, Checkout and the rest? If you use most of their services accumulated information will be better than dairy for sure. But danger of not having control over passwords, who access computer is probably a billion times bigger than Google handing out your life story. Google Desktop is out of the question naturally. Many if not most services only require Gmail login, get that and door is wide open.

Rohit sign up for Google Analytics https://www.google.com/analytics/home/ Free and used on many many sites. How much of internet works, tracking is essential and some will scream if you block :) Analytics is Google in a nutshell, all about analyzing and directing traffic efficiently - for whatever reason. Does not have to related to money - is for Google obviously.

Btw, Google says users must be informed when Google Analytics is activated on a site. Very few does that and similar services does not seem to have same openness about them. To prevent unwanted tracking you have to disable cookies and scripting on all sites - only allow it on sites you trust. G-Zapper not nearly enough, other monsters than Google have an interest in you. Get at least No-Script for Firefox http://www.noscript.net/whats and with IE disable all this for internet zone. There are tools for IE to manage this white listing idea. You just crippled browser and many sites but are better protected.

There was a guy who published a button for a Firefox extension. On a forum somewhere. Worked ok but he forgot he left some information in the few lines of script. Like his Gmail login and password  8) Had he been a Google freak his life would have been published with it - thanks to userfriendly sharing of login. Actually I only checked his Gmail account, may be there is more. Could be he keep his banking data in online Doc file!

163
At least you can find out what bugs are acknowledged, being worked on, fixed. IE7 also have a buglist somewhere. Here is fixed list for Firefox 2.0.0.1 http://forums.mozill...ewtopic.php?t=494984

Try Maxthon 2.0 or http://www.enhanceie.../ie/troubleshoot.asp

164
Web Developer toolbar is the other one. Be sure to get latest beta http://chrispederick...k/webdeveloper/beta/ I dont think he advertise it on frontpage. Changelog http://chrispederick...oper/beta/changelog/

165
Toptenreviews have been an inspiration to some it seems.

Hope you make some money through all those affiliate links. I did not bother reading terms of policy but may be an idea to clearly inform users about link magic? I rate setup in spam, scam category if not but thats me...

166
Or die out like Fliseclab which was Comodo of last year http://www.filseclab...roducts/firewall.htm

167
Ive become tired of most freeware firewalls but did manage to install and set up Comodo Firewall. Was 100% happy but have no need for it. Im sure almost anyone can do it - with some interest for net setup of course. Take a look at their forum, tons of tips and tricks. Good documentation and the "right" attitude from developers is worth a lot since firewalls can be tricky to set up and made stable. Some fall in love, some get BSOD - typical for many freeware firewalls. Comodo so popular most incompatibilities should be mentioned somewhere.

168
As I understand HTTP scanning the one and only unique feature is drive by protection where code is executed in memory - or through browser exploits perhaps. As soon as good old files are involved default module kicks in. More or less the same for email filter though such a thing often does a lot more than just look at attachments/files. Free Avira is doing quite well without any of these.

Sounds like a bad excuse from someone who aims at optimal protection. Could be disabled by default perhaps.

Living Room / Re: Building a Quiet PC
« on: November 30, 2006, 01:40 PM »
9 fans should force a visit to Silentpcreview http://www.silentpcreview.com/  8) Search forum for undervolting.

Was it a 3500 cpu? Well, any in the series run very cool and you can get f0dders numbers easy. Stock cooler is more than enough even with overclocking - Ive had a 3500 at 2700mhz and 1.55v, dont remember more than 55 as max. No special cooling. So activate whatever Asus call cpu fan control in bios and you will get perhaps 2000rpm instead of default 3500rpm. Only in games and such will fan speed up. You can set levels of heat vs. rpm in procentage or something. Same can be done for video cards Im sure. Try Rivatuner if not supported by Nvidia drivers. Normal desktop work mostly requires very little power so should be quiet. At least cpu, video.

I dont remember if there were some special settings for AMD cool&quiet feature in Asus bios. Not that you have to use it, not much benefit with so cool cpu. Can be quiet when running at fixed/normal speed and letting bios deal with rpm. Stock fan cant go lower than 1500rpm or so anyway.

Also remember sensors can be inaugurate and the "Motherboard/Chipset" one can only measure 1 spot. If placed near area of motherboard which is just hot by design you get "alarming" number no matter what. Does not mean much. If you want 30 degrees find where sensor is then point fan directly at it - only way. Close to useless sensor I think. Also look out for Asus updates, happens they "recalibrate" through either bios or monitor tool.

170
Ive had same boot problem when using own bootlogo. http://www.microsoft...rmation/bootini.mspx /bootlogo switch have this side effect.

171
About the AV I think you are stuck with Avast if you want HTTP scanning. Dont think there is much difference between the same old free versions from AVG, Avira, Avast - Avira seems to be moving fast though - nice pricing too. Avast is still the most complete package, most features and options.

AOL have a free AV based on Kaspersky engine, some dont like EULA but could be the most "secure". http://www.wildersse...ght=active+shield+AV

I searched "imon zetera" and ran into a post about compatibility problems similar to yours. Was from 2005 so may be not easy to solve.

Seems Netgear have relaunched userforums http://forum1.netgear.com/index.php

Living Room / Re: digg requires far too much effort!
« on: November 23, 2006, 03:40 PM »
Join Google Reader, make a Digg folder then add feeds for Design, Gaming etc. Very fast to scan through in either expanded and list view - and you avoid getting depressed. If you feel overload so fast other showstoppers will follow. Those with Firefox and Greasemonkey might like Digg de-n00ber http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/2310

Diggdot.us http://diggdot.us/ or Original Signal http://digg.originalsignal.com/ could be part of solution?

Im not really sure there are that many unique Digg stories worth highlighting. No more than from so many other sources. May be an impression from having to wade through lots of "noise".

Living Room / Re: Agnitum Outpost 4 .... dumped
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:06 PM »
Did you disable router firewall first? Dont know if it helps with Outpost but no reason to run 2 firewalls, can conflict according to Netgear http://kbserver.netg...eb_files/n101177.asp

174
Sometimes that is all one can do. I have a little Netgear router myself but when I had to get some wireless stuff for a friend I went with Linksys. Some months ago but popular opinion was not in favor of Netgear. Any in the WRT54 series are better so I read http://www.linksys.c...mon%2FVisitorWrapper

Ok so we can add NET setup to major pains in the butt when getting new computer. Ram and net then.

1-2 years ago Netgear had a very active userforum, not any more. Bad sign. Now you can sign up for a membership but I dont really see the benefit.

175
Well you can force manual control of irqs but you dont want to. Motherboard is not designed for that. Sharing is not a bad thing, cant be avoided and some "conflicts" are meant to be. However you chose which pci slot to use, what you can do. Judging from 2.5.3 in manual I would use slot 3 for the most picky/important pci card. The other two share with video card(s). Actually my tv-card share with video card and no problems. Trial and error with this. Ive seen same lines on NF2 motherboard, tv-card didnt work well under some conditions because SATA was tied to pci-traffic - not really documented anywhere.

Plug&Play setting dont matter, XP overrules. At least as long as you have APIC enabled. Dont disable or XP wont boot. If you really want to try non-APIC then "Computer" driver must be replaced in XP first - then reboot and disable APIC in bios. I bet setup will be worse than what you have to deal with now, not even worth an experiment. Motherboards have been designed to take advantage of APIC since forever.

In theory you cant have a problem with all these virtual wonder irqs http://www.microsoft...sysperf/IO-APIC.mspx http://www.microsoft...em/sysperf/apic.mspx

Ive read you can reset XP hardware configuration and let it redetect on next reboot. Should be necessary sometimes, I guess if XP dont react to your moving cards about or to onboard feature being disabled. Dont expect a logic saying X disabled means XP put Y at "free" irq. As said many irqs are fixed and cant be overtaken.
