Darwin,
Teracopy does work with DirOpus. I use it with DirOpus 8. Notice my context menu.

As soon as Intuit releases Quicken for Linux I will switch. Until that time........ :(

Yes, I know there are similar programs in Linux but none that I've seen can touch Quicken. Specifically, I like Quicken's ability to update all my accounts daily from the web at the press of a single button.

Sorry I did say that but after checking this it seems OOo can export to pdf without any extra software, but not edit pdf documents. My mistake, apologies.  :-[
Actually, your idea isn't that far off though. I found that Onenote can export to Word Doc format, and that can be read by OO.

Does OneNote have an extension for Firefox? I tried OneNote 2003 back in the day but uninstalled it because I couldn't clip from Firefox. I would rather give up OneNote than Firefox!  That is what led me to Evernote, which I'm happy with. But, I will be getting a copy of OneNote 2007 next week as part of the MS Action Pack and I'd like to try it. But, if it doesn't play well with Firefox then I won't bother. I don't want to have to switch to IE every time I want to save a clipping from the web.

You can print notebooks to PDFs with a free pdf printer and then read out the data in OpenOffice and convert them to any data you like, right? I've not tested that but it should be possible. or export to webpage and word documents.
Are you saying that OpenOffice will open a PDF and make it editable? Not sure what you mean by "read out the data in OO".

I don't need a simple notetaker. Does it do document management? If so, does it store the info in a central database, like Evernote, or does it index individual documents that are already present, like Paperport?

382
Hmmm, that's tempting. You are obviously a user and fan, can you tell me what this offers more than Evernote does for free? From the screenshots I do like the layout of UR better.

Do you keep all your docs and info in a single database? Are there any limitations on database size?

I realize there is already a multi-page thread on document management here in the DC forums. My problem is that I have tried many different doc managment solutions from Keynote, to individual files indexed with a desktop search engine, to Evernote. I'm always looking for something better but sooner or later I need to just settle on something and be done with it.

I see that the Pro version says it is USB capable. Are there any limitations to running it off a USB drive? Is it truly portable, not relying on the host machine's registry?

regedit /v ProxyOn.reg
Where did the /v switch come from?  The /s switch simply tells it to execute silently. I have never heard of /v.

I get an "Invalid number of parameters" error when executing the line with xcopy in it - so the batch doesn't finish properly.
It appears you can not use an environment variable in the xcopy command. Just spell out your entire path inside quotation marks.

General Software Discussion / Re: DVD playback software
« on: May 13, 2007, 09:37 AM »
That's because DVD codecs are licensed and must be purchased. Computer retailers would have to purchase them just like they have to purchase that copy of Windows they sell with the machine. You are purchasing a computer so you have to have an OS.

VLC Player will play DVDs without any extra codecs needed and its freeware.

You could create a batch file that would load the new reg setting and put it in your startup folder. Save the settings that turn off the proxy to a file named remove.reg. Don't forget the proper reg header. Then create a file named noproxy.cmd and put it in your startup folder.

noproxy.cmd
\REGED /S path to file\remove.reg

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Soda can / bottle cooler
« on: May 12, 2007, 04:30 PM »
Another neat and related trick is a quick way to cool a bottle of wine. Wrap it in newspaper and soak the newspaper with water. Put the bottle on the outside of your car windshield in the wiper gutter and drive about 2 miles. The water evaporating from the newspaper will pull heat from the bottle and chill it very quickly.

All ice cubes are recylable! :P (until you add that salt)

I use this all the time. Last week I wanted to chill a beer quickly so I put it in a bowl of ice and water, poured in salt and stirred it up. Ice cold beer in less than 5 minutes! Salt melts the ice sucking up heat to do so. Same technique as a hand cranked ice cream maker.

Other than those two benefits you may as well use the built in defragger (which Microsoft actually derived from DiskKeeper under license but with most additional functionality removed).
-Carol Haynes (May 11, 2007, 12:34 PM)

Quote from "XP Myths", http://mywebpages.co...pportCD/XPMyths.html
Myth - "The built-in Disk Defragmenter is good enough."

Reality - "This statement would be true if the built-in defragmenter was fast, automatic, and customizable. Unfortunately, the built-in defragmenter does not have any of these features. The built-in defragmenter takes many minutes to hours to run. It requires that you keep track of fragmentation levels, you determine when performance has gotten so bad you have to do something about it, and then you manually defragment each drive using the built-in defragmentation tool." - Source - Comparison Chart (PDF)

Disk Defragmenter Limitations - "The Disk Defragmenter tool is based on the full retail version of Diskeeper by Executive Software International, Inc. The version that is included with Microsoft Windows 2000 and later provides limited functionality in maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that use the FAT, the FAT32, or the NTFS file system. The XP version has the following limitations." - Source

- It can defragment only local volumes.
- It can defragment only one volume at a time.
- It cannot defragment one volume while scanning another.
- It cannot be easily scheduled without scripts or third party utilities
- It can run only one Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in at a time.

Just noticed this today at Google Labs:
http://www.google.com/googlenotebook/overview.html
Seems like a lightweight solution compared to some of the apps discussed here, but an interesting idea anyway.

I know this is an old post but why do you think this is a lightweight solution?

I have tried several different solutions from copying each note to an individual pdf, to NeoMem, and then to Evernote and lastly, I might try to keep everything online with Google Notebook. I like the idea of having all my notes accessible from anywhere on the web. Plus, my Evernote database is now huge and everytime I add a note, the entire file needs to be backed up again.

Don't ask me why I keep changing my approach because I don't know why. Each has worked well for me. Does anybody here use Google Notebook for their entire collection of notes and clippings?

General Software Discussion / Re: Irfanview4 released
« on: May 09, 2007, 07:48 PM »
I have tried many times to love Irfanview but I always fall back to Xnview. I can't get used to the thumbnail browser opening in a separate window with Irfanview. I much prefer the way Xnview incorporates the browser.

Clever, yes. But, anybody stupid enough to think that MS needs your credit card info along with your security code and ATM pin shouldn't be carrying a card anyway. In fact, they shouldn't be on that interweb thing.

I received the offer for RX suite but from what I can tell, it doesn't offer any new capabilities that I don't already have covered with the freeware CrapCleaner.

394
Is there any way to get this plugin to open a link in the current tab? Or, does that need to be configured in FF?

395
maybe someone can write a plugin to interface with the best free+pay sticky notes apps, so you can add stickies from farr.
Great idea. I pointed an alias to a Powerpro script:
local nh
nh = note.open
note.setCategory(nh,"reminder")
note.ontop(nh,0)

396
I just gave Keybreeze a try and came running back to FARR! Having said that though, it has a nice feature. Typing keyword "note" allows you to create a post-it style desktop note. I know FARR has addnote/viewnote, but this desktop sticky note is pretty cool.

You could always use OpenOffice Writer. Of course, that's overkill if all you need is an envelope program.

Site/Forum Features / Re: should we get rid of the topic icons?
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:34 PM »
All I can is that they mean absolutely nothing to me. I'm not going to decide to read a topic just because it has a thumbs up or smiley face icon.

399
Hopefully he hand down source code to someone?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Quote from Bruce:
Sorry, but no.

Why?
1. Its got so many interal design problems now, that anyone attempting
to learn it and change it would need a lot of support from me which I
am not interested in providing. In fact, there are certain key
sections, like bar drawing and menu processing, that I fear touching
myself.

2. I don't think there is anything more of significant to be done.
If someone thinks of something, a plugin could be used.

3. There does not seem to be any more significant bugs.

I love the portability of ver 1.xxx. Don't plan to upgrade to ver 2 due to the .net requirements. I run mine off my thumbdrive.
