I really like UltraExplorer also. Currently, I'm torn between xplorer2 and UE. Xplorer2 is less powerful but I really like it's simple interface. Of course, I modded mine with Skrommel's Barnacle to add a menu bar for my favorites. What I don't like about UltraExplorer is 1) it is definitely slower to load than xplorer2, 2) it only displays tabs for one pane at a time which I find confusing, and 3) I can't set the startup folder in the second pane. Yes, I know that is something small but it bothers me. In xplorer2 I can set both panes to start where I want them to.

Having said all that, I am using UE more and more over xplorer2. I am coming off of Directory Opus but had to give it up when I switched to Vista. I can't afford that updgrade price.

General Software Discussion / Re: Automatic Reg Key Backup

Hopefully, that is the way of the future. For most of my favorite apps I know there is a strong push from support forum members for portability. Several apps I know of are looking towards moving to ini or xml settings files instead of reliance on the registry.

Plus, if you monitor www.portablefreeware.com, you will find that there are quite a few apps that appear to need an installation but in fact can be extracted and run portably.

So which registry keys are good ones to back up?
Depends on your individual software and which ones have preferences you want to save. Personally, I save:
- CrapCleaner preferences
- My DonationCoder Regkey
- J.River Media Center registration and preferences
- Several more, but you get the idea.

Some programs save data in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software. Some save data in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. And lots save in both places.

A good way to see just what gets written to the registry during an install is to use TotalUninstall. That will record changes to the registry from an install and ensures that all gets erased after an uninstall.

There are lots of ways to backup the registry. But, that's not the same as backing up individual reg keys. I backup individual keys to save program registrations and preferences. Some of my programs require online activation; it is not as easy as just entering a code. (J.River Media Center for example). Plus, I can transfer my settings to another machine easily.

Ok, Moon Software's reply to my asking where it went is this:

The program is currently discontinued as it is not properly compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista (does not copy some types of registry keys). You can use it on Windows 9x. The file can be found at http://www.moonsoftw...re.com/files/Legacy/
Ahto

So, anyway, that is why it disappeared I guess. Regarding Registry Workshop, I use it often and it has a great favourites feature. I think I'll contact the author and request an export of the favourites to individual or merged keys.

Maybe so, but it seems to be saving all the ones I want saved. So far, so good!

Nighted,
Thank you. That was what I was looking for. I wonder why Moonsoftware pulled it? It is a great little utility.

Never mind, I figured it out. I post it here in case anybody else needs to know.

Regkeybackup.cmd
regedit /e "C:\My documents\Registry Settings\BigOven.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SDMVentures\BigOven"
regedit /e "C:\My documents\Registry Settings\Grabit.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Shemes"
regedit /e "C:\My documents\Registry Settings\CrapCleaner.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\CCleaner\Options"
regedit /e "C:\My documents\Registry Settings\MediaCenter.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\J. River\Media Center 12"
regedit /e "C:\My documents\Registry Settings\Syncback.reg" "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\2BrightSparks\SyncBackSE"

I like to backup certain reg keys that have configuration data, such as CrapCleaner, Syncback profiles, etc.

Does anybody know of a solution that will backup select registry keys? I used to use a program called RegKeyBackup from MoonSoftware but it seems that they pulled it. Are there any other products out there that can create backup sets for registry keys just like a normal backup program creates file backup sets? Is there a way to do it without software, like through a batch file?

I give up.  :tellme: I just wanted to point out what I thought was a nice piece of simple software when most everything nowadays comes with a bloated GUI.

I found a really nice, simple piece of sw today. Automee is a very tiny program that does macros, form filling, program launching, etc. It even has a text based todo tracker. It was listed today on FreewareGuide and was the first I had heard of it. I'm always looking for very simple but productive software and I am impressed with this. I'm curious if anybody else has heard of it or what they think.

How about an ability to run a program with elevated admin privileges in Vista? Similar to the "sudo" alias in this utility:

I'm not trying to defend Teracopy, I've removed it myself. But, you seem a bit harsh for software that is free for home use. Maybe you paid for it to use in a corp environment, if so, then you have a right to better support. Most of us here are probably home users though. I look at all freeware programs as gifts from the author and I feel fortunate to get them despite what imperfections they might have.

I'll have to give SuperCopier a look when I get home tonight. My work firewall has blocked access to that site. Can anybody tell me if it is Vista compatible?

Edit:
It looks like you amended your post to add that you paid for their software. Then you are correct, you have a right to complain.

edbro, I don't think Quicken will ever do that, or need to, unless some market research shows there's money to be made, much like Adobe won't write (or port) a version of Photoshop. Just not enough users to justify the ROI.

Never say never. They have already taken the first step:
Intuit takes QuickBooks Enterprise to Linux

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Microsoft OneNote 2007

Thanks Carol, I'll give it a try.

Edit: It works as you advertise. Once I put the path in options it clipped to a new sidenote.

P.S. A simple copy and paste will also add the url. It was not the extension doing that in your earlier attempt. Try it.

Yes, there is an add-in that lets you clip from Firefox and it works fine. It shows up on the context menu when you right-click on a page or text selection. Info comes into OneNote just as if you'd clipped it from IE.

The Firefox add in is just one example. Check out the list at the OneNote PowerToys list.
Seems to be outdated. Will not work with FF2.xx

The only negative that I have is DO feels bloated when compared to xplorer2.
I own DirOpus 8 but I'll be going back to xplorer2 next week when I load Vista. $42 to upgrade is just too steep for me.

General Software Discussion / Re: The great defrag shootout
« on: June 11, 2007, 04:35 PM »
I'm running PerfectDisk on my own machine and am quite curious about how it will fare. I'm guessing that it's not going to do that well - middle of the pack, anyway. Bets anyone?

Perfect Disc 8 Pro seems to be his 'permanently installed' defragger. There isn't a separate review that I can see but he uses it as a benchmark and for good all round reliability - and doing what it says it does he seems happy. The only criticism seem to be:

  • Doesn't seem to fully defrag the MFT (and can't reduce it's size)
  • Doesn't automatically organise free space 100% effectively
  • Leaves some files fragmented and sometimes splits a file around a fixed file.

The first and last are the most irritating to my mind - and I have noticed the third one on drives with large files. You can force better consolidation of free space but you can cook and eat a five course banquet while it does it!

What he says on his downloads page is:
I am using JKDefrag a lot more than PerfectDisk, because it's free, quick and thorough. It has replaced PD in the batch file that does a complete defrag of my entire hard drive.

It is interesting that the one he likes the best, JKDefrag, is freeware. That's what I like to see.

I have PerfectDisk8 on my machine but I might try JkDefrag just because of the price and the GPL license.

General Software Discussion / Recommend Vista CD Burner
« on: June 10, 2007, 07:36 PM »
Can somebody please recommend to me a good CD/DVD burning program that is Vista compatible? I currently have Nero 6 on my XP Pro but I will be loading Vista Business next week and I know that Nero 6 is not compatible. I'm not really sure that I want to pay another $50 to upgrade to ver 7. Does anybody know of any good freeware burning programs that are Vista compat?

374
Hmmm.... this may be a coincidence, but explorer.exe ate up over 40MB of VM/Private Bytes and DOPus 9 was sitting at over 40% CPU while I had teracopy installed and running. I exited and uninstalled it and all is well.

That's strange. Mine is very stable on XP Pro SP2 with DirOpus 8.

When you say "installed and running" do you mean that you called up the program interface? On my system all I have to do is access it from the shell context menu. Teracopy doesn't need to be "running". It appears to be just a dll call. Just for grins, I called up the main program and it still only used 3.3MB of ram.
