@nosh,

TextCrawler free http://www.digitalvo...content/textcrawler/, is indispensable for me for search replace in my codes (text files).

Though it do not have the context menu option, as you require, you can save the regular expressions and re-use them. Also the last folder / files are auto saved in drop down list.

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / NANY 2012 - Pledge & Final Release: Stick A Note
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:34 AM »
Dear Friends,

Due to working in lots of project in different platform, both at office and home, I urgently need a sticky note for a given document, program, website etc. Better if it could sync with Simplenote web server. I also found discussion in DC here on similar subject.

Now I searched and tried GumNotes http://www.gumnotes.com/, which does what I want, but...after two days it is not working. All my notes have vanished and giving error "can not connect Simplenote" though same password works if I connect from browser.

Next I tried ResophNotes http://www.resoph.com/ResophNotes/, more or less like QuickNote http://www.quicknote.de/ and can sync with simplenote. But can not mark note to a doc/prog like GumNotes.

Next I tried Stickes http://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/, which can mark note to a doc/prog but the logic is not good as like GumNotes.

I have more or less decided to make one for myself and use ResophNotes's text file option to sync with Simplenote.

Before I embark, please throw light to me to see another free one which does all these and may be more, and I will embrace it.

Embarked and brought the fruit below  :)

Description
I use many programs which has one good feature, which I like, compare to others.
Now it so happens that the developer of the program names the exe in a small
way. If it is a portable then it is near to impossible for me to find out the
program whose that feature I remember and need it.

Also it may so happens that I found a 6 month old program on my computer and do
not remember what feature is better in it, or did I even liked it.

I need some sort of note to put against each program where I mention which
feature I like and can use in future.

I searched but none available free once could do do the job satisfactorily.

I developed Stick A Note.

Features
Focusless note.
Note moves with window.
Saves notes in text files.
Auto hides or shows if window is inactive or active.
Hotekey toggle show/hide note.
Planned Features

Find And Run Robot / Re: Hanging behavior -- FARR Problem?
« on: November 12, 2011, 01:20 AM »
@IainB, it looks like there are many folders/files in "Search Folder" Options of FARR. So it is taking long time to load the relevant ones from these.

Try reducing the folders/files or add 'file extension' like 'exe' only to read from the folder. This may reduce the FARR load time and leave others for the queue. I once had similar problem and doing the above helped it.

Thanks @Ath for the feedback.

Adding some alternate method is good suggestion and I will try to implement it. "Window title shown" is easier alternate and I will first try on it.

I will suggest Process Tamer https://www.donation...proctamer/index.html, freeware by our own Mouser.

Not only you can see the top CPU using process (it hides the idle ones by default), it also 'tames' them by lowering their priority if any one goes beyond the limit. All work is done auto. After I started using it, I forgot when was the last time my machine freeze.

Give it a spin.

@ewemoa, I will put the checksum on the website next time, also will change the App to report the total time, thanks.

@Ath, it is based on CPU load, as that is the only measurement for all process in general. I will like to hear how it works in client/server setup.

@kyrathaba, just posted another pledge Tell When Done.

Now since there is a limit of only two pledge by each contributor, I feel a bit bonded as there is another one going inside my mind.

Since by habit most of the developers are still in their leisure mood, they will pick up as the door closes  :), I think we may increase the number of pledges.

What do you suggest ?

NANY 2012 Entry Information

Application Name Tell When Done
Version 1.6.0
Short Description Watches a program window, which is doing some process, and tells when it has done it's processing. Effectively freeing the user to do another job in another window, without worrying about it.
Supported OSes WinXp and above

Description
Many a times I run a program which does some process and displays a report/log etc. This program just shows a spinner/marquee which means I may have to wait 1/10/30 etc. minutes depending on the process. It also happens that I need to take next step after it has completed the process. Some programs do show some notification alert if it is in the background but many do not.

Now while watching the spinner, I feel like having a quick look at my Twitter stream/ Facebook notification/ New unread mail etc. So I just switch to another window do the look and switch back to find that the process is still going on.

I do this switching and at one time get so engrossed in reading new mail and its link that I forget when 20 minutes has gone by. I suddenly realize and switch back to find the program has done it's processing long time back.

Enough. I am the master of the computer and not the other way around. I want all programs to tell me when it has done it's process, so that I can concentrate on useful work instead of looking at a spinner.

Tell When Done is born.

Pressing Win+t (changeable) hotkey on the program which is doing some process, activates it to watch it and tell me when it has done the process. The notification is displayed above all windows so that I can not miss it.

Anand

« on: October 15, 2011, 04:56 AM »
I agree with @kyrathaba.

What he did is same as a host asking "Everyone sing along" in a full room. Though he/she knows very well that not everyone WILL sing and not everyone CAN sing. Still asking "5 of you all sing along" will cause a pin drop silence, as everyone will think that other one will sing.

This is encouragement and not forcing or counting.

I further feel that everybody has some bread and butter job and at times it becomes difficult to cut time for other jobs. Relax guys, we are all friends here and will not cry on less number of Apps at the end of the year.

Let us keep this event as enjoyable one, we all already have a boss breathing on our neck with sand-clock in hand.

In my view, Steve Jobs had vision. Where others saw rocks, he saw statue and built it. Like all humans, he too had positive and negative characteristics.

As a developer, I request to all to look at the positives he had and try to learn from it. There is a 'Steve' hidden in everyone, just need a chance to come out.

Well, by grace of GOD and good wishes of friends, I am hectically busy with my project work. Though I need them but was unable to fulfill my heart desires, which is here  :)

We are celebrating Durga Puja here in Bengal, India now. So, got some time free and am happy to say that latest beta of Paste Text Like is uploaded. Still have the "Pasteboard" and "Show Color" option due, but this is more or less ready for normal user usage.

Hope to hear some comments and feedback.

I have bookmarked it and will check and use them, as I constantly keep looking for better Apps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Speech to Text Software?
« on: September 13, 2011, 06:20 AM »
Yeah, just read about "Dictation Pro" in http://freewarehome.com/ (new listings) and was wondering if any one could tell it's worthness.

Now since @joiwind mentioned it, I hope @Renegade will try and give some feedback  :)

brothersoft.com has some but all paidware, same for naturalreaders.com.

@Renegade, http://chronicle.com...text-solutions/23016 gives tips to use Google Voice to make voicemail left for you, transcribed and then sent to your Gmail inbox !

I haven't tried any, and will be happy if someone reverts with the results.

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Ethervane Echo
« on: September 12, 2011, 06:26 AM »
@tranglos, first congratulation on "Ethervane Echo" pledge.

Second I pledged "Paste Text Like", which works with clipboard too, so we are both in same boat now :)

Without making "Ethervane Echo" any lesser than "ArsClip", I will like to say that you can open the ArsClip menu at cursor position (set hotkey in Configure) and can increase the number of item (Configure / Show Options). It does has search feature (N - Search, in menu). Permanent clip with script, edit clipboard, exclude program, paste method, form mode etc. are few others which I use occasionally.

But "ArsClip" too has it's short coming, and I will suggest you take idea from it and enhance it and make it more easier.

Anand

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Paste Text Like
« on: September 11, 2011, 11:20 AM »
yes @nudone, I initially added the formatted text, like say for upper, proper etc. cases, hex color value, etc., but I found that they are taking few milliseconds each time a user opens the PTL menu. He/she may be interested in pasting a 'Proper Case' text, though PTL took time in formatting other formats. So I decided to keep it as an option in 'Settings' (not complete yet) to 'Enable preview text Y/N'.

@rjbull you are right. PTL will offer the most commonly-needed text manipulations, directly. It will not be a clipboard manager. In fact it works only on the last copied text.

I request you to try copy 120,140,170 (the numbers with commas is a rgb color value) and press Win+v and select 'Show Color'. You can see what color the rgb values represent, in the menu itself. This will help a lot to developers like me. :)

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Anand

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Pledge & Early Beta: Paste Text Like
« on: September 11, 2011, 03:16 AM »
Yes, I agree @rjbull. I have tried them earlier and in fact am a satisfied user of ArcClip now, and mentioned ArsClip as similar program on the website.

But similarity ends there. All others are clipboard manager, in the sense they give scripts, edit capability, plugins etc. Paste Text Like does the most sought after job directly. In fact ArsClip has many options which I took idea for Paste Text Like, but to accomplish them in ArsClip I have to go through further dialog options and settings. I designed Paste Text Like to work more intuitively and directly for normal users.

Thanks for the feedback.

Anand

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / NANY 2012 Pledge & Final Release: Paste Text Like
« on: September 10, 2011, 12:42 PM »
NANY 2012 Entry Information

Application Name Paste Text Like
Version 1.5.0
Short Description Paste Text Like gives options to paste a text from clipboard in various format
Supported OSes MS Windows Xp or higher
Web Page https://sites.google.../site/pastetextlike/
Author Anand K Gupta

Description
Gives option to paste the text from clipboard, in different format, like Proper case, valid file name, hex color value, remove blanks etc. Also option for mimic typing, auto pasteboard and view the color, if possible.

Use hotkey Win+v instead of Ctrl+v for Paste Text Like options.

Right click on tray icon and select Settings`, to define the hotkey and other values.

Features
Say we make a expenses spreadsheet and put heading as "Expenses from 01/04/2011 to 15/04/2011". We will like to save the file as the header text, but when we copy and paste "Expenses from 01/04/2011 to 15/04/2011" in the save dialog, the OS throws error message. Ok, we know '/' is not supported as file name, but
can't the OS convert it itself. Paste Text Like gives option to paste it as "Expenses from 01_04_2011 to 15_04_2011".

When we copy large chunk of text from say a mail which has many blank lines and paste in a new mail, we may like to remove all double blank lines. Instead of doing it manually after paste, we can use Paste Text Like to remove the blank
lines and paste the text.

I can not tell how many times I have faced a situation where I got feedback of my App, where say after selecting a given prodcut name, the App is giving error. Now to check this I have to manually type the product name, no matter how complex it is (some medicine names) though it was given in the feedback mail. Simply coping and pasting on a list box do not work. Paste Text Like can mimic a typing of the clipboard text.

Planned Features
Pasteboard and Show color options

Screenshots
home.png

Usage
Installation
Unzip all the files into a directory you want, then launch it.

Using the Application
Press hotkey Win+v instead of Ctrl+v for Paste Text Like options.

Uninstallation
Delete all files and emove the folder.

Known Issues
Beta version, not complete yet. Hope to get some feedback and suggestions.

Hi barney

There _IS_ a difference between !$var==[somevalue] and $var<>[somevalue].

In '<>' the characters are compared up to the length of the right character string, e.g.

"A"  <> "Z"      // result: TRUE
"A"  <> "A "     // result: TRUE
"A " <> "A"      // result: FALSE (means they are equal)
""   <> "A"      // result: TRUE

'==' returns TRUE only when both character strings contain exactly the same characters, so a ! (NOT) before it will return TRUE when not exactly same e.g.

! "A"   == "A"                    // result: FALSE
! "A"   == "A "                   // result: TRUE
! "A "  == "A"                    // result: TRUE
! ""    == "A"                    // result: TRUE
! "AB"  == "ABC"                  // result: TRUE
! "ABC" == "ABC"                  // result: FALSE

In short use '<>' if you do not want exact comparison, but just left most ones, e.g.
MPT <> "P"   // where MPT has "P1" value, so this will return FALSE, and similarly,
! LEFT(MPT,1) == "P" // where MPT has "P1" value, so this will return FALSE

Hope I was able to help you a bit in fixing your old codes :)

Regards,

Anand

Thanks Stephen for the Newsletter.

I am sorry to say that I abandoned the "You Have Files" NANY 2012 pledge, as I found that many similar exist and no point in making the same.

But do not worry, I am testing a totally different App right now, and may be this will prove more useful that the above. Hope to make a beta in 1/2 weeks.

Living Room / Re: In search of ... a lost note app
« on: August 19, 2011, 01:56 AM »
I use 'Quicknote' for few most important features, which are indispensable for me.

1. Quickly jot down my thought, which may be totally different from what I am doing at the moment.
2. Quick copy paste from different apps.
3. Keep some complex google search text to use in searches.
4. Small code snippets to refer the logic for different apps.
5. And the most important to auto note down what I am typing in the password field.

I am sure, you will find more uses from it in your day to day use.

Regards,

Anand
