Why am I not surprised?  When my wife died (some time ago) I tried to cancel her Verizon cell phone account.  The customer support rep tried to talk me into keeping it!  It was surreal.  Then, when he sensed his sales pitch was failing he switched tactics and told me that cancelling the contract would incur a $175 "penalty" and that it would be cheaper for me to just keep the phone service going!

ON MY DEAD WIFE'S CELL PHONE.

Yeah, Verizon's a top notch organization.

I have a similar anecdote except I was in the terrible position of being the customer service employee. I had just finished training and started working phone support for Directv when someone called in saying that the owner of the account had passed away and they needed to close the account.

I had been trained that I always had to warn the customer about a possible cancellation fee if the account still had an active contract. I felt like such a jerk, but I did it. Then I transferred him to the retention department. :(

Shortly after that I learned that account owner death was one of the few exceptions to the cancellation fee. I still felt like a jerk, but was relieved to know I wouldn't have to do that again. :-[

Picasa

http://picasa.google.com/

It also lets you upload your photos to a web album right from the program. Any comments (captions) you made in the photos are uploaded along with the pictures, too.

It's handy!

p3lb0x, save your userbar -- the next cody contest after this one will be a dc userbar contest
The next one after that should be Cody sightings, kind of like that Venetian one and the one with Cody on top of that building.

Something that I just don't understand why hasn't been made widely available yet is automatic syncing of documents online and off.

It would be great to have a local client that works offline, but syncs with your online folder for when you're on the go. I know these things exist, but why aren't they more mainstream?

I know some people question the security and privacy, but for those who don't (most people, probably) why isn't this available?

In slightly related news, I recently installed Office 2007 on my wife's laptop as an upgrade from Office 2003. Because I selected upgrade it did the entire install by itself and didn't let me customize it. After that I was using her laptop and noticed a Groove button in Windows Explorer, thought it was some garbage app she had unwittingly installed, and tried to uninstall it. When I found out it was Office 2007 and that it was for file and folder synchronizing across the network, I quickly installed Groove on my other two PCs. I really like it.

Something as simple as that would be great with internet connectivity.

Find one of those "participate in these offers to win a free iPod" things. They'll ask for your e-mail address. You will get spam.

1. get a hotmail account
2. ????
3. Enjoy your spam !!

seriously, there is no step 2. I have my hotmail junk email filter set to high and its completely useless.

A few years ago I made a hotmail account and before I even used it anywhere or told anyone about it I had spam in my inbox.

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to start learning C++?
« on: October 11, 2007, 07:15 PM »
as there is next to no free alternative

What about Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Express? That's free. It's C++.

Honestly, I did that drawing. It's like my best drawing ever. I spent three hours shading the upper lip.

Then you deserve a spanking. What's the point on the IMDB link?

I guess you'd need to see the movie to know.

Videogame Development / Question about Assignments
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:01 AM »
Mouser,

In Assignment 1 you say that we should attach source code, etc.

What if someone were to use a program like Game Maker or TGB where doing so is not possible or against the EULA?

Or are these assignments meant only for the languages posted in the Programmer's School?

Deozaan: Too cute!  She captured the likeness of Cody perfectly.

Honestly, I did that drawing. It's like my best drawing ever. I spent three hours shading the upper lip.

By the way, may i suggest people might want to try to use DrawSWF, a very cool free program that records a movie as you draw: http://drawswf.sourceforge.net/

You asked for it mouser!

This was done by my daughter. Who is -5 years old.

No Cody decoder ring? :-\
That's what I really want.

Be sure to drink your ovaltine?

General Software Discussion / Re: Magix (Xara) rant...
« on: October 10, 2007, 09:48 PM »
I bought Xara X1 from an offer posted earlier on this site and I can't get them to stop sending me spam about the latest Xara versions.

I've clicked the unsubscribe link several times. Sadly my awesome spam-free e-mail account now gets spam from Xara and only Xara.

Only Gmail for me replacing desktop e-mail client.

Google Docs is kind of handy for sharing documents/having them available wherever I have internet.

Developer's Corner / Re: Ponder This
« on: October 10, 2007, 09:44 PM »
Is this even a development problem? Looks more like a straight forward puzzle to me. The answer is B, by the way. When in doubt, always answer B...

I always pick "A" cause I have some Canadian friends.

Nice little diversion. Too bad I can't go over to my second monitor. :(

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, but if it's loading in a frame, Adblock can let you block entire iframes instead of just images and scripts.

Living Room / Re: Versioning of files

When working on media files, and if you have the money to burn, perhaps take a look at http://www.softimage...products/alienbrain/ . Don't have any experience with it myself, but it sounds cool enough. And id software uses it :)

mind you looking at it that "starter pack" is only 12$
will look closer

You sure that's only $12? Looks like $12,000 to me.

I use FileHamster and I just want to point out that you can set a delay so that it will not save new versions if they occur within n amount of hours:mins:seconds of each other. This way if you save a file 15 times a minute, but they're not really important changes, you can set it to 00:01:00 and it will only save if it's been a full minute since the last revision.

Sorry if this was mentioned before. I started skimming through the last few posts.

i just grew mine to impress chris - i plan on shaving it off today now that he is gone  ;)

ps. i heard allen lost an arm wrestling match with his wife and he had to shave off his beard -- just a rumour though.

I saw a picture of Allen taken a couple weeks ago. He's starting to look like ZZ Top!

Another suggestion:  A "Preview" button from the CompactAutoRunner_ConfigBuilder would be nice I think.
-taichimaster (July 09, 2007, 04:06 PM)

I second this suggestion!

8898
And another possible feature I'd like as an option per button:

When you click the button to launch whatever application, it closes CAR.

8899
Wierd.  Has anyone else had the paths show up like "<APP_PATH>\C:\Folder\image.jpg" to them?

I just tried it again on another computer and it wouldn't do it. But I think I figured out why it did it the way it did.

I have the CAR Config Builder installed on my P:\ drive but the files I was working with were on my C:\ drive. It probably built the path in relation to the Config Builder instead of the ini file I was working on.

8900
For the first one what OS?

Tip: You can also manually edit the ini file also.  You don't have to use the program to create a config.

As for copying over the program and autorun.inf everytime it is an option of Compact AutoRunner Configuration Builder that you will find on Step 1.

Win XP SP2.

I had to resort to manually editing the .ini to correct the path issue, but after that I could just reload the ini into the CAR Config Builder and it worked properly.

My suggestion for not having to update the Step 1 settings to keep it from copying over those files each time is to have a Save button that just rewrites the ini. Maybe it could copy the other files over if they're missing from the ini directory.

It's very nice, and I've finished what I was doing with it. Now I'm only wondering why you can't have more than 5 buttons (not counting the Exit button). And for some reason I'm left with the feeling that I'd like music playing, too. Or at least a startup sound effect.  ;D
