General Software Discussion / Re: scanning sofware
« on: May 02, 2012, 06:32 AM »
Hi kalos - if you mean scanning to PDF - I use both/either Scan2PDF or WinScan2PDF.

They are perhaps not the best but simple and rapid.

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron updated
« on: May 02, 2012, 05:00 AM »
SRWare Iron updated to 18.0.1050.0 (it follows Chrome updates).

153
Tried it : it called home during the installation, then asked for my email address and then to set up an account at Norton - I uninstalled it (and it asked me to reboot...).

Then I used WhyReboot? to see what Norton had left behind and WhyReboot? found 463 Norton related entries ...

No further comments.

No problems here either 'til now and I'm liking the new features
Thanks hamradio.

I'm using TyperTask (free, 53Kb!).  It works in many different programs where previously I had some issues with other programs not expanding. It's been a while so I cannot quite remember the details.
Increase your efficiency by automating your keyboard with TyperTask! This tool simulates keyboard typing, and can be used to instantly type common phrases. Use it to automate chat conversations, website logins, programming code blocks, HTML tags, or anything else you can imagine.

It even has advanced automation features, including launching programs, window activation, delays, and mouse clicks, so it's capable of performing complex tasks. Configuration is easy with simple text files. It has vTask's powerful keyboard simulation engine, so it can handle international codes and system keys such as <Control>.

The included help file demonstrates many TyperTask uses. No installation required.

TyperTask will automate your keyboard when a "signal" is typed.
For example, when you type "hth", it will auto type "Hope this helps!"

Nice find justice

I've added an option to not open the latest catalog in our feature list (if it was closed before closing the Daminion)

Thanks KM.

158
I downloaded the new version from the link in your post, it uninstalled 524 and installed 525 (yes 525 is shown in >About).

I tried again - opening Daminion, closing catalog etc... Daminion still tries to access the floppy drive when the catalog is closed, so I did the simplest thing and dis-activated the floppy disk driver - so that's fixed. However Daminion still opens the previous catalog when loading ... but please don't worry about that KM, it was just an idea for an option - the floppy disk problem WAS a problem !

159
Well I tested 0.9.0.525 and Daminion still tries to read the floppy drive.
I then closed the catalog, closed Daminion, reopened Daminion and it still tries to read the floppy drive AND opens the previous catalog.

160
Daminion keeps trying to read the A:\ drive on my machine (yes, I do have an A:\ diskette drive...), when I say keeps, I mean constantly - any ideas please how to prevent this ?

- Could you please tell me your Windows version?
- Does the problem still there when you remove a diskette from floppy-drive?

- XP
- It happens without a diskette.

And secondly a request (unless I've missed this option somewhere) - how about an option to open Daminion without it immediately loading a catalog ?
Daminion remembers the last opened catalog, and automatically open it on the next launch. We can add an option to launch Daminion without loading the lastly opened catalog if you'll close all catalogs before closing the program.

Great, thanks K. Murat.

Thanks for the new version K.Murat.

Two remarks :

Daminion keeps trying to read the A:\ drive on my machine (yes, I do have an A:\ diskette drive...), when I say keeps, I mean constantly - any ideas please how to prevent this ?

And secondly a request (unless I've missed this option somewhere) - how about an option to open Daminion without it immediately loading a catalog ?

General Software Discussion / Testing a file tagger
« on: April 03, 2012, 12:24 PM »
I'm testing a (new for me) file tagger : FenrirFS - has anyone else here tried it out ?

Pro's : fast and quite stable, (though I did manage to crash it by trying to do too many things at once), clean gui, uses a db ...

Con's : internal logic is a bit strange, it took me a while to work out how to change to another directory from My Docs, My Pictures and so on; some translating into English still missing. Preview for txt and pdf files doesn't want to work although it is supposed to.

On the whole I'm liking it, maybe a keeper ...

A bigger list of trackers

165
what are the implications (pros/cons) of turning on/off "Auto-Syncing Metadata"?
I presume, for photos that have not been catalogued in another programme, it will only sync tags etc added manually in Daminion?

I am quite interested in this as well.

Same here.

Living Room / Re: Google to Spy on Your Phone Calls Now...

It'll be when Google starts seriously working on robots that I will really begin to worry... that reminds me of a film  :-\

168
Great - I'll try that too ... ^^ ;D ^^

169
Would have been a little more believable if it took more effort to get off the ground. :-)
- you don't believe what you see nudone ?  ;D

Definitely the 60's for me - I was 20 in 1969 but an early starter and growing up in Souf London : soul music, bluebeat, Mods, the Who, the Stones... In fact I was in school with David Bowie (but not in the same year) and Peter Frampton.
On the beaches in the early 60's with the Mods, going to Stones' concerts in 1965 ...
I could write a whole list of the groups I saw live during the 60's and early 70's, the big and small free festivals (I can proudly say that I was at the first Glastonbury festival (actually strictly speaking the second really as the first doesn't really count)), hanging out in the clubs, in Soho...
Lots of drugs, the International Times, Oz, the Whole Earth Catalog.  8)

I know this sounds like clichés but things were great then - people were much happier then than now, more carefree, more idealistic, more fraternal ... but it was all over by the middle 70's : hard drugs (the Devil's Spawn), hate, greed and glamour.

171
Only for FF ?
And it would be great to be able to delete them just by clicking ...

Living Room / Re: Scroogle R.I.P.
« on: March 05, 2012, 07:03 AM »
There are search engines and some commercial apps that are taking output from google search and removing the redirects and presenting it to users. Scroogle isn't the only in town for that. I am sure like this other search engines like dogpile that will die soon. So google is taking things seriously and hitting on services which are against their business model. As for google being charity, that's funny, google was known to spend money on useless stuff like - labs, summer of code, random contests, doodles from users and amazon gift certificates for answering their stupid 1 page survey. Sure all that was for their own benefit in one way or the other, but it was no less than charity in marketing sense.

If tomorrow bing takes data out of duckduckgo, expect gabriel to close DDG as well. Big point here is - nobody is trying to see the big picture due to the cost involved and hence leeching out on each other for solution.

Anyone want to chime in on StartPage? That was my choice for a while now, I think the results are a little different than Google (though they claim they are Google Inspired), but StartPage claims not to record your IP address, and I'd presume certainly not forwarding other info to Google. So that's my answer so far to Google's new policies.

I tried Startpage but prefer Ixquick which also runs Startpage.

Living Room / Scroogle R.I.P.

So Scroogle has died amid apparently general indifference.

I'd just like to thank all those that kept the flag flying so long in difficult circumstances.

Scroogle gone forever

I find this SW just now. Nice utility!  ;D
I have a question... the "quick views" tab bar, can i put it to upper side, down to menu?

Hi, go to Preferences (F5) then Display then right down at the bottom of the list look for ViewTabsPosition and on the right on that line change to "epTop" then Apply and OK.

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron updated

@Tuxman :
Ew, thought it was dead. Thanks.
Any links, maybe?
No, Iron is far from dead :  check the forum SRWare (English) forum

Download

@TaoPhoenix :
A few folks have called Iron on the verge of a Scam, with only a few sorta-minor features. The other contender I keep seeing in this category is Comodo Dragon.

I'm no Expert, but there are only some five legit remakes of Chromium for security.

Sorry but I don't know where you got that idea from, check this : Chrome versus Iron
