The title says it all - am I all alone with my little PC and my files all here with me ?

I wonder if others feel the same, maybe misplaced, distrust of the cloud ?

Living Room / Back to basics : virtual memory and page file ...
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:03 AM »
This is going back so far that I can't remember so much about this question, so I'm asking for someone's advice. I'm quite aware that it's probably a stupid question, but they're the best aren't they ...

I have virtual memory and page file set up on this PC and for some reason the virtual memory is hardly ever used whereas the page file of course is (see attached screen capture).
I have searched various sites about this and many seem to confuse the two, some even saying it's the same thing, i.e  virtual memory = page file.
So what I'm asking is : as the virtual memory never seems to be used to it's full extent, in fact far from it, should I reduce the size and if so how do I go about it ? The idea being to free up resources.
Thanks.

I'm looking for a tool that can safely identify and backup then clean out old unused or obsolete dll files.
I am looking at AnalogX's DLLArchive and Nirsoft's RegDllView but I'm not feeling very easy about it, I know that CCleaner can do this to some extent but does anyone have any other suggestions - even to say NO, DON'T DO IT !

« on: April 27, 2011, 07:05 AM »
Is it ? Or is it just a local problem on my PC ? It's been on 503 for days.

Is anyone testing Daminion ?
It is in beta so is still rather unsteady but it looks good so far - any comments ?
(I have no relation with the company !)

Timns Apps / Auspex Suggestions
« on: January 17, 2011, 06:36 AM »
1) that the pop-up with suggestions follows the cursor or the caret, at present it is at top left of the open text window
2) minimize and maximize...!

I've been thinking about the word lists which are becoming very long and about what would be the best way to arrange them (if they should be arranged) :
  • tree with folders ?
  • alphabetical folders ?
  • tabs ?

...Be prepared...  ;)

I can't remember my school maths lessons, so I'm looking for a software calculator that can easily calculate different shaped volumes, e.g. cylinders and so on - any ideas please ?

When I say 'easily' I mean where I don't have to enter pi or complicated formulae, just height and diameter etc....

General Software Discussion / XML editor

I think someone was looking for an XML editor here a while ago - if you still haven't found one, try this :Simple XML Editor

I'm sure this exists, in fact I could quite well have it already but I'm looking for an app that lists all my exe's in order of last access date. If I do already have it then I've forgotten what it's called (and haven't used it in quite a while) which is why I'm looking for such an app.
I wanted to get on with the usual Spring clean and erase stuff that I've downloaded, tested and then forgotten about and it seems that if I can list all those apps that I haven't used or opened since say 6 months or even a year then the Spring cleaning will be a lot easier.

Any ideas or comments please ?

Circle Dock / v 1.5 problems - freezes and crashes
« on: February 09, 2010, 10:27 AM »
When CD opens and I click on Settings in the context menu CD crashes and I get this error message (which of course I can't make head or tail of) and I have to kill the process.

Gone back to previous for now  :(

I have used FarStone DriveClone for a long time, it is in my opinion an excellent program which has often saved my "life", however I haven't wanted to continue paying for updates.

So when I came across Comodo Time Machine today, I was obviously intrigued - but has anyone here tried it yet ? In other words has anyone taken the risk yet ?

If not, then I suppose I'm going to have to do so myself (snapshot of a snapshot?).  :D

EDIT : just been reading some posts on their forum - think I'll wait a while...

General Software Discussion / MIDI to MP3
« on: December 29, 2009, 04:48 AM »
I'm looking for a good freeware MIDI to MP3 converter - any suggestions ?

I've been playing mid files and recording them with Audacity then exporting as mp3, but it's a long way round.

Circle Dock / REQUEST : "always on top" option in context menu
« on: December 25, 2009, 04:43 PM »
Hi, it would be helpful to have an "always on top" option in the right-click context menu - when you want to drag-and-drop something from somewhere, if the z-level option in settings is set to "normal" then CD of course disappears to the back when clicking on whatever you want to drag over. You then have to go to settings, find the z-level, change it, go back do what you want to do - then go back to settings.......

This could of course have been requested before but I didn't do a search !

Hi, there is a complete index of XP commands HERE and I was thinking it would be good to have a small application with all these commands in either list form, a drop-down menu or whatever and which would open any of the commands when clicking on the line in the app....if you see what I mean ?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA : sleep on click, wakeup with Esc
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:56 AM »
I've tried looking through the forum with search for "sleep" but there are really too many references !

What I'd like : to put my PC to sleep with a click on a gui button and then be able to wake it up with the Esc key and ONLY with the Esc key.

Why ? : because with other progs you wake up the PC by moving the mouse -
this is no good for me because either my companion inadvertently moves the mouse when she's on the phone or whatever, or it's the cat that jumps up on the desk and moves the mouse !!!  ;D

Anyone like to have a try please ?

Hi,
just an idea which may be feasible : when you drag-and-drop applications onto the dock they appear as their file names, e.g. : myantivirus.exe, if you do a lot of this then it becomes a bit tedious to have to open Item settings for each one to change the name : soooo would it be possible to add an option which would wipe the extensions from the link name ?
I hope that's clear ? !!

The scenario : I have a built-in sound card and a USB sound card (with mike and headphones) - I listen to the radio (RadioSure ! - the best) on the built-in sound card which outs to the speakers and I use the USB soundcard for Skype.
However sometimes I would like to listen to whatever is streaming through the browser (K-Meleon - dare I say the best ?) via the USB sound card while leaving the radio on the built-in sound card.

I hope that's clear - so I'm looking for a freeware that allows me to control what goes where.

Thanks in advance... !

There are a few threads here about automatic file sorters but I haven't found what I'm looking for : an automatic file sorter based on extension, for example, that would scan a folder or folders, or even a drive, find all PDF's and move them to a folder, even to a new folder called PDF - any ideas please ?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA : boot log
« on: July 02, 2009, 12:53 PM »
After the usual : (this has maybe been requested before but I can't find it), I'd really like a simple boot log that would appear in a window on-screen once everything is loaded and that shows the order and time of loading of services and applications etc during boot up and on until the system is up and running as usual.
I know there are applications for this but they seem too complicated (for me anyway).

Thanks !
