General Software Discussion / Adding text 'silently'?
« on: May 23, 2009, 02:00 AM »
Is there a tool that makes it possible to add something like a task or any text to an app without actually opening it?

I want to add notes to a PIM lets say, I type something via the command line and it gets added silently. For example I know Lifehacker's Gina Trapani has a todo.sh tool that at least creates/appends to a text file but I don't want to get into cygwin stuff on this machine, also there are autohotkey scripts that create/append text files and of course those that send keys but they open the destination app. I know this must be dependent on the destination app as well but anyone know of any tools like that? or perhaps a PIM that natively supports adding of notes (or tasks or calendar entries) without opening it?

lol @ such a site even existing

The issue with those policies and what you are saying is that at least 4, 3 and 2 are easily "broken" by browsing. Even the best filters which don't allow watching videos at work for example or block sites can't prevent the most common source of serious computer problem these days...being connected to the net.

mouser, patent the DcUpdater

Excuse me, I believe you have my stapler

This idea is not entirely new and perhaps needs "enhancement" to be workable but...how about turning tabs into continuous pages? One (long) page that eases moving through what would otherwise be tabs with different sites. For researching a topic for example, not moving between tabs but browsing down one page.

And there are places where Firefox is not even allowed, companies lol

Why is there a comparison to Chrome? That's not fair really. Chrome can be compared to Firefox only after it is of the same age. Is anybody really thinking that Chrome is not going to become heavier, to use your word(s), as time goes by? And when similar extensions become available for Chrome of course a majority will want to use them anyway and I am betting a good number will ask the features to be included in the download itself.

Not sure if I can come up with an original idea but look at their FAQ
"Do you've got some examples how a video of my mockup should look like?"

"Do you've got"???

And I thought my English is worthless  ;D

@mouser, in that sense you are right, I mean Yahoo messenger installed the toolbar for me even though I clearly unchecked it. So yes there are sneaky ways to get the stuff in or make uninstall difficult but when you are given the choice at install to accept or unaccept and your choices are followed then the difference is not much, the way I see it.

I agree with the overall assertion like mouser posted and I alluded to in this thread. The result for the end user is very little different than tool bars and the likes that come with multitude of downloads. OpenCandy is offering a secondary mechanism behind the scenes that manifests itself a bit differently for the user. Of course as suggested it is better if the end user can refuse the OpenCandy registry/folder stuff but really the difference between existing software 'bundles' is not all that much.

Atomic weight of Chlorine...worked
Biggest town in Germany...failed

Just two random tries that, on google, either work directly (answer on top of search results) or provide a good link with the answer.

Hit 100 a bit earlier, all 100 very on topic and insightful too   ;)

A few weeks ago webhostingtalk was affected where, as far as I know, all backups were deleted as well. There aren't that many bigger collection of web pros than webhostingtalk. So if they can be victims then who knows who is safe. Offline backups must be part of the strategy for any data that is remotely important.

The concept presented in the demo video is hardly new, just the content of the optional installs is different, rather than being a toolbar and such. Just because a 'back end' recommendation is behind it doesn't make it any different for the end user.

It won't work as there is no way to enforce it even if it's a good thing. The problem here is that, even in 2009, lawmakers have not come to grips with the international nature of the internet. Even if this is an attempt to regulate software written in their jurisdiction there is still no way to standardize different languages, code, etc.

However, I am going to play devil's advocate and say that Ehtyar's assertion that open source and free software must be held to a different standard is something that can't last forever, just putting a text file saying this software is "as is" is not just ok. Don't expect that kind of a thing to be workable/acceptable in 10 or 20 years time.

Another last resort option is using Audacity to record it and export to mp3

I would say CMSMS, I mentioned in the Joomla thread, could be worth a look. No tagging but pages can be assigned to a hierarchy like www.example.com/category1/hello.php. It uses Smarty so you should be able to get most things you have listed.

Does Joomla use FCK? I have seen people having to resort to css word-wrap in other CMSes (/me not a Joomla user) whenever I have used a CMS I have switched off and done plain text.

There is an FCK plugin, but out of the box Joomla uses TinyMCE. No matter, WYSIWYG is quite the dog. I've tried building a test site for just two small apps, with neat little pages like Features, Screenshots, Download, History, FAQ... After posting just two articles I knew I could never maintain a consistent layout of the pages using a WYSIWYG editor, arranging headers and paragraphs manually, nudging the lines... It was a prime instance of OMG LOL situation.

How did you know it was about the editor though? :) The editor is one of the problems. Another is that there is no usable plain text mode - the content is a single line of html code. If I'm going to cut and paste to an HTML editor, I can do a static site faster that way. Another thing is how there is no way to easily link to internal articles. You have to use http://www.example.c...;id=26&Itemid=40 in the editor. Even with clean URLs it's awful, because if you reassign an article to another category, the links will go stale; I was hoping for something more wikified, I don't know. Again, it's easier to do a static site and link to "my-article.html" than use URLs like that.

And there's more, but I'm in the midst of writing a more coherent post, so I'll put this one on hold.

In my instance, the one I have most recent experience with, is CMS Made Simple. You are correct, it's TinyMCE and also FCK additionally. I may be wrong but from your description it seems CMSMS has something that Joomla doesn't.
Without going too off topic...the thing is I would use a CMS for it's power in achieving other things, like one example having multiple users (permissions system). I don't use it to "ease" coding, so I set up a template and then go about generating pages (inside CMSMS) using plain text areas without an editor (I turn off the editor in CMSMS). I hope that makes sense.
