General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Explorer crashing
« on: December 10, 2017, 02:53 PM »
Thanks for the reply.
The defrag I have not done recently, cleaning I don't believe I have done since this started, however CCleaner I have. Will try defrag and cleaning and check on the other notes you posted.

General Software Discussion / Windows Explorer crashing
« on: December 10, 2017, 01:13 PM »
Starting a while ago I get Windows Explorer crashing/restarting *most times* when I open an image, save a new file or image in any app, rename a file, when opening Windows Explorer window and similar operations but those are the main ones. System function fine otherwise, and for example exe open fine. During those operations there is a delay and taskbar flashes as if reloading and any open windows explorer window is closed.

Eventviewer shows:

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.16299.15, time stamp: 0x66e02565
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.16299.64, time stamp: 0x493793ea
Exception code: 0xc00000fd
Fault offset: 0x00000000000294da
Faulting process id: 0x54c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d371e769a2914a
Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll
Report Id: d748cb9b-d8eb-4711-93f4-531686288592
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

No Windows or driver updates happened just when this started and I don't recall updating any apps either.

ESET online, Defender, Malwarebytes...all fine.
Sfc, chkdsk at boot....no errors
Drivers are updated as far as I can see (I used Snappy Driver Installer to check)

Googling 'windows explorer crashing' more or less end up at a page like https://answers.micr...53-893a-dd8cd4b4db00 I have done those listed (except since I get no sfc errors I didn't continue lower in the page).
There are some mentions of indexing and network drives but those dont apply to this machine.

Any ideas?

General Software Discussion / Re: Downloadable Office trial
« on: December 05, 2017, 09:28 AM »
Well there are ebay sellers with close to or even full 100% rating selling 'unused keys sourced from genuine authorised Microsoft re-sellers' (I googled and saw this earlier) but with or without this or what IainB posted I am mildly surprised they have taken down offline version trials, pushing 365 is their policy I suppose .... the main impetus of this thread is for a pc built for a non techie until she can decide to come up with full Office $$ or forget it and ask me to install Libre, Free, or other.

Thanks IainB, might try it if all else fails EDIT: Reading your last reply, thanks for the extra details
Thanks wraith808, yes want to see if I can install full 2016 offline trial but will see what happens

That doesn't work

If you're not already signed in with the Microsoft account associated with your copy of Office do that now.

and after sign in (with my account just to see how it may work)

This is the right place to install and re-install Office 2016, Office 2013 and Office 365, or manage your Office 365 subscription, but you signed in with an account not associated with any Office products

A 'new customer' obviously doesn't have any of that.

General Software Discussion / Downloadable Office trial
« on: December 04, 2017, 01:36 PM »
Does a MS Office trial still exist? It certainly used to - and not just at Technet or MSDN - but Googling 'Office trial' seem to all now end up at Office 365 pages, at least the handful or two results that I clicked on. The official office.com site requires a key to install or reinstall. Can one not download Office trials for a self built computer anymore?

I like RightNote's new/recent Journal feature, doubtful I would buy at this point but it's tempting

My local WordPress install acting as a notes database, using Keep and Pimlical for online and sync. Still interested and do check out new and updated ones but cant afford (I guess both time wise and money wise) to move things around if something else/better comes around. Have some old notes in TreeProjects as well

A few more days with 57 it is still better and less hungry than < 57 but Chrome still wins, both Win 10 and Mint.

Updated to 1709 on my laptop today. Only few minutes so far, the only thing I have noticed so far is Settings is slower to open, noticeably slower, not sure why ....

v57 feels less of a resource hog, this is the first time I have been able to say this about Firefox. But I have only used it briefly, will see if it lasts.

I would spend 100% of time on Linux if I could but it is far from perfect so for the Windows pc I have switched to Defender since a few months and so far so good.
