I always just lit a cigar.  That had the effect of ending the meeting.

In June of  1984 we were 42 % of 1983 in meetings.

Living Room / Re: The Long Tail and it's Doubters
« on: July 20, 2008, 11:18 AM »
In my view the vast majority of sales, whether "brick and morter" or through the web are for  actual physical things.  Thus the theory that shelf space limits what is available doesn't hold water.  The web based retailer has to buy  inventory  and store and ship the " thing" . The only credible part to the theory that I see is that the web based seller  MAY be able to buy less of an item since the web based retailer has only one location ( say he sells only 24 pcs per year ) while the chain store needs 6 per store x 1000 stores.  Thus there are some slow sellers , ( generally niche items ) availalble only on the web but they account for only a very small portion of total sales and profits.  When  and if content and services start to account for more sales than
"things "  the long tail theory may become valid.

And in 40 years in the retail business I never heard of the 80 / 20 rule.

Living Room / JOTT - a new cell phone service
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:49 PM »
From David Pogue's New York Times column.  I tried Jott and I think it's great.  When you are out without a pen and pencil you make a call and dictate a note etc.  Then it is sent as an e-mail to yourself.
Here are the links.  Pogue's Posts   http://www.nytimes.c..._r=1&oref=slogin

http://jott.com/

What do you do when you get an idea you want to remember? A brainstorm, a to-do item, a reminder you want to set for yourself? Writing it down is the only solution — so most of the time, you don’t, because you’re driving, or you have no pen, or you’re away from your computer.

Meet Jott, your personal transcription service. You sign up at Jott.com by providing your cell number and e-mail address.

I had no problem upgrading to AVG 8.0 free  from 7.5 free on two XP computers and one Vista computer.  I also run Zone alarm on all three.

When the install asked about the tool bar I said NO.  It does take forever to scan.

Living Room / Re: satellite radio
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:14 AM »
Thank you Allen.  That was an interesting article. I found ( on Amazon) a Pioneer receiver for XM that seems to fit the bill.

Doing further research I am reading that reception on these portables is hit or miss without a separate aerial. That would limit it's useability .  Is this true ?  If I need a wired aerial then I guess I will need a stationary table type radio.

Living Room / satellite radio
« on: May 29, 2008, 06:32 PM »
I  have recently moved to Williamsburg, Va and found that regular broadcast radio reception is, well, poor would be a step up.  Thus I am looking to satellite radio as a solution. I want, ( my wife wants  :-*)to get major league baseball (Yankees)

A nice portable battery operated radio  is the ideal as I want to use it in the house and on the deck.   Sirrus or XM ?
A particular model? Any suggestions from users will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Lew

I'm 64 yrs old and retired,  I will tell you from  long experience.  NEVER think that you are NOT as smart or as good as the other guy. You are just as good and just  smart as anyone else.
The other interviewees are worried about YOU .
Good luck

I have found that >  http://forums.techguy.org  is a great forum.  I am sure I have asked some
" dumb " :-[ questions but have never been made to feel like a dope and I have always gotten
answers that helped me a lot. Lot's of times just a search will find a thread that answers a question or solves my problem.
