N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Color Warlock
« on: September 19, 2017, 06:58 AM »
Man this is pretty cool!  A couple of times per year I need an app like this, and I've tried lots of the different ones out there over the years.  I'm not sure how I've missed this one for the last six and a half years!  As others have said, thanks for this!  It seems to work great with Windows 10--which can't be said of every app out there!

You're welcome.

I dont work with colour often, but this is just a lovely app :up:

A couple of minor things:

1) In the chart builder,
if I delete a colour, I get the following message:

---------------------------
Error!
---------------------------
Error with CurrentChanged.

Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

the colour deletes as expected.

2) I'm a bit confused re saving charts:
the first one kept it's name in menu: Charts >Custom
The next two charts created are just called "Untitled Color Chart" in that menu -- why dont they used their saved name?
(I saved them as Test/Test2/Test3)

1) Will look into it.

2) The chart menu uses the name you specify in the chart builder for the name.  If you don't specify a name it uses Untitled Color Chart.

Thanks for the continual upgrades!

You're welcome. What do you think of the new color listing in the chart builder?

Thanks again for promoting Color Warlock to my #1 favorite tool. Over the years I have been using dozens of color apps, including full-fledged commercial products - nothing comes close in terms of efficiency. Too slow on start-up, Java dependencies, not portable, tiny interface fonts, not enough custom slots, no quick copy actions .... -  Color Warlock suffers none of their drawbacks. Its the best tool out there, I mean it.  :) :Thmbsup:

You're very welcome.

Work on the next version has taken place. I may offer a beta before I release it as well.  But for now here is a teaser screenshot of an interface I have improved on in the next version as it stands currently (subject to changes)...

One small thing: When you quick-edit a chart and change nothing but its chart name, there is no save-prompt when closing the builder.
That is what happened before for the chart builder as well and still does.  I can change both normal mode and edit mode to add the modified flag if desired though.  Just let me know.
Well, unless the current behavior has advantages that I may be missing, it's more consistent if the save-prompt reminder pops up for ANY unsaved changes, including the chart name. For lazy folks like me who dismiss the dialog immediately, counting on it to offer the save dialog.  :-[

I will add that to the list of improvements for next version that I am also slowly working on with a few more additional benefits. :)

The new picker works fine for me. I like the reduced picker-window better than the old one. The button to trigger it could be more "buttony", though, see screenshot.

It is a standard button control in which the system handles how it draws, but I will see if I can improve it some.

Excellent.  :)
One small thing: When you quick-edit a chart and change nothing but its chart name, there is no save-prompt when closing the builder. But that's minor, not really important.

That is what happened before for the chart builder as well and still does.  I can change both normal mode and edit mode to add the modified flag if desired though.  Just let me know.

To test it on a high-dpi screen, I have to wait for the weekend. Will let you know should I notice any issues.

No problem.

Thanks a ton for implementing everything so quickly.  :up: :Thmbsup:

You're very welcome. :)

the latest beta works like a charm for me on my 1920x1200 screen. Charts are easy to edit, Always on top is correctly kept up from the main window. The button on top right is a welcome additional bonus feature.

Actually for the Chart Builder the Always On Top is separate from the main window. At the moment it defaults to always on at start of chart builder window but can be toggled off temporarily till closed.  Should I make it pickup the current value of the main window but not save the value back to main window?  That way you can toggle on/off still if wanted and it not affect the main window?

On another note I am slowly looking into the DPI issue as well...

Just a report from a high dpi screen esperience.

On my 3000x2000 267 ppi screen, CW gets the correct color of where it thinks the cursor is.

From the attached image you'll see that 'Chart Builder' thinks the cursor is at x: 1027  Y: 283 while the 'Window Spy' shows X: 2053  Y:566.
The cursor is actually on the red close box of CW and the 'Window Spy' correctly shows its color (C35A50). CW correctly reports 555655 as the color at where it thinks the cursor is situated.

This isn't due to the beta version; I installed the older version on the higher dpi machine and its behavior is the same.

On my 'normal' 1920x1080 screens everything is peachy.

-cranioscopical (August 28, 2017, 03:53 PM)

Will have to look into that when I have more time to delve into the method of how I am doing the color picker as it may require a pretty good amount of it to be rewrote to work with high dpi screens.

The Beta is excellent except for the on-top feature of the ChartBuilder which is probably not implemented yet. Quick editing of a chart works fine including the pre-filled file name upon save and the refresh in the main program.  :Thmbsup:

Still doing a few things to it as well, that you will also like most likely.

Nice work, ham  :up:

Add some new screenshots to this thread maybe?

I probably will update them when I release the next version. :)

What about if I create a new option named like Organize Custom Charts which would put them into those sub menus if checked. If not checked it would show them as just a single list that way for those who doesn't want them organized by the first letter can still see the color preview as well...thoughts on that?

Quoting myself here...but I went ahead and did that while I had some time along with a couple other choices added and such.

The other color choices verify with a website I found in my tests as well.

One last thing:
Loading/switching charts were much faster if we could have an entry "Open Custom Chart" right in the Charts main menu. Below or above "Open Temporary" for instance.

Your alphabetical flyouts are well-intended. I can imagine them being very useful for organized folks who maintain a large database of clients/ websites. Me, I juggle 10-12 charts that I mainly use.
Too many to remember what Alt-shortcut goes with what chart, so I click on "Explore Custom Directory" to see what I have, then back again via the hover-flyouts to wait for the letters of the alphabet, only to be reminded that these are not tied to the file names I just googled via "Explore Custom Directory". I'd have to open them one by one and prefix their chart-name (not file name) to see them all at one quick glance under 1_ oder _underscore flyouts.

What about if I create a new option named like Organize Custom Charts which would put them into those sub menus if checked. If not checked it would show them as just a single list that way for those who doesn't want them organized by the first letter can still see the color preview as well...thoughts on that?

ScreenManiac, with some free time today I have managed to get most/if not all of what you requested in, but not uploaded yet.  I have also programmed another color format option in which is HSV and in my tests each color I tried was also the same in Paint.NET HSV. You can select those as well from the copy color action mouse buttons too or from the context menu right click option which you can also choose.

A preview screenshot of when right click is set to Use Color Format Selector below...

Also the first build that uses .NET 4.0. :)

Well, .NET 4.0 is the last one supported on Windows XP, so for the ~3 users still on that platform it would be ideal... :tellme:

That is why I will probably just use .NET 4.0 for the updated version.

Haven't tried Color Warlock on *nix (and haven't scanned this thread if someone already did that), but it could possibly run there using Mono, so you may want to keep the current release available for 'backward compatibility', as not all .NET 4.0 features are ported to Mono (yet).

The current release as it is will probably get renamed with net20 appended to it when I release the update to Color Warlock.

Newer Net-version: Sounds good to me, no objections.
With everything else you said I fully agree.  :Thmbsup:
Thank you for being open to suggestions.

Just happy to hear from someone using it that is willing to provide some suggestions as well. :Thmbsup:

BTW...I was thinking at least .NET 4.0 for the .net version. Thoughts?

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Color Warlock
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:36 PM »
Yes, that would suffice. To make it obvious, the Charts menu might sport an entry "Edit current chart" and if necessary "Refresh current chart" - unless it auto-refreshes whenever new colors added in the builder.

It will have a new option in File menu of main window to quick edit chart was my thinking.  It reload's the chart each time the chart builder is closed.

The Chart Builder itself needs to take over the "Always on top" setting. It's  tedious to always bring it back to front while picking dozens of colors from a picture or website.

I will make it hide and remove the on top if it is set on the main window when going into chart builder from both chart builder menu items and reapply the appropriate on top setting along with making the main window visible again when you close the chart builder.  That should make it easier to control I would think.

I were useful to have 255, 255, 255 as an (additional?) option for the Copy Click Actions.

Will add that option to each of the click action types as well.

Would it make sense to offer ALL click actions directly with the right-click? Personally, I find it hard to remember 3 different button codes. For me it were easier to have my favorite on left, and the rest on right-click. Much faster than waiting for the nested flyouts under Options whenever I need a different code than my usual.

Will add a format chooser context menu to the right click action type menu as well.

I was wondering, however, if Warlock could do the auto-typing all by itself. Not meaning to be greedy, just putting it up in the air. You'd be the first color picker/archiver I know of that integrates this function.

That might be an idea I will have to investigate more on how to do for a further down the road version.

Okay...I have another question for anyone that uses the program and might see this post...

What are your feelings on if I went about working on upgrading the program to use a newer .NET version than 2.0 as it is currently?

More Info: One benefit would be security fixes in the later version's of .NET and would also allow for additional .NET code that I cannot use currently due to the version.

Your input will be greatly appreciated on the .NET question.

Let me look into it when real life slows down some. :)
Awesome. Take your time. No Rush.
Thanks for keeping this project alive.  :up:

Question's though for when I do get time...

1. Would automatically loading the current displayed chart into the chart builder work for the quick way to edit the current chart if the file is found, so that it would skip the step of having to manually load it and still have all the features the user might want to make your edits with?  It would still allow for the user to select File and New from the menu in chart builder for new charts if desired, but it would load the current one by default if found.

and

2. What format would the values you want to be pasted into be in for RGB? Like 255, 255, 255 or other?  If so I could probably do a paste button to convert it to the correct format for the chart builder.

Great tool.  :Thmbsup:
Is there a quick way to edit the currently active palette?
Other than having to open it all over again from the ChartBuilder?

I auto-paste RGB values into standard color dialogs with this tool here:
http://rolandtoth.hu/PasteColor/

Maybe Warlock could even perform this auto-typing all by itself?
The way it works = you put the cursor into the RED-field of a standard color diaolg, then trigger the auto-type and it will
1) overwrite the value for the RED-field
2) Tab to Green and replace the GREEN-field
3) Tab to Blue and replace that value

Thank you for this awesome color archiver.

Let me look into it when real life slows down some. :)

170
My first thought jokingly of course...is that it takes them longer to enter spaces verses tabs and if they get paid by the hour...then more time was spent with spaces... :P

171
Aaaaand the problem has returned.  :(

I don't see that you've uninstalled and reinstalled the application?  Or tried it in a different directory?

I haven't. Since win32pad doesn't have an option to export its settings and since I don't want to lose them, that's kind of a 'last resort' thing to do. And the problem coming and going without my input seems to point in some other direction, no?

@MilesAhead: I don't have a multi-monitor setup.

It doesn't store anything in the registry (unless you using setup.exe and select some choices for integration with IE or with Windows Explorer).

The "other place" is according to Windows spec which is your profile directory.

Look in c:\documents and settings\<userid>\Application Data\Gena01\Win32Pad\win32pad.ini

Thank you,

Gena01
-Gena01 @ http://www.gena01.com/forum/win32pad/win32pad-ini-file/msg1486/#msg1486

That said...

1) Either you enabled it accidentally from the view menu.
or
2) It sound's like it's not saving the always on top setting right each time from the view menu as far as I can tell was implemented from the version history.

Along with the read me claims it stores ini in app folder, but note that I found the settings in the app data folder as was said from the quoted post I copied from the support form for it linked to above.

Hope that helps.

Hi there .o/

I found some sort of "bug", which is actually something I've seen in several applications so far.

Here are the steps to reproduce:
- have the program's window opened, but not maximized
- reduce it to the task bar
- close the program by right-clicking its button in the taskbar and selecting "Close this window"

When you run the program again, its window doesn't show, even if you click the button on the taskbar (which would normally restore the window).

From what another developer told me a while back, that is related to how Windows treats window reduction: it just moves the window to coordinates "far, far away" outside of the desktop's resolution. Thus when you close the program, it saves those coordinates... and when it runs again, its window is always at a position outside of the desktop.

You still can make it visible again by maximizing the window (using the system menu which you can bring up with Alt + spacebar), but it's kinda not cool having to do so.
You could also edit the coordinates in the user.config file somewhere under "%localappdata%\TextManipulationUtility" to have it back into the visible area of the desktop… but it would be much better if the program checked whether or not the coordinates specified in there are visible or not according to the current desktop's resolution, and if not, reset the window's position.

Not the author but in .net (CSharp) anyway developers can check for minimized programs and account for that...Here is an example if it will help anyone.  As noted not complete code, but might get coders a start with it.

Example Save Settings (Not Complete Code) CSharp
Code: C# [Select]
  1. if (this.WindowState == FormWindowState.Maximized || this.WindowState == FormWindowState.Minimized)
  2. {
  3.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Left = this.RestoreBounds.Left;
  4.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Top = this.RestoreBounds.Top;
  5.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Width = this.RestoreBounds.Width;
  6.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Height = this.RestoreBounds.Height;
  7.
  8.     if (this.WindowState == FormWindowState.Minimized)
  9.     {
  10.         SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.wasMaximized = false;
  11.     }
  12.     else
  13.     {
  14.         SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.wasMaximized = true;
  15.     }
  16. }
  17. else
  18. {
  19.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Left = this.Left;
  20.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Top = this.Top;
  21.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Width = this.Width;
  22.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.Height = this.Height;
  23.     SaveSettingsData.ClosedState.wasMaximized = false;
  24. }

Example Load Settings (Not Complete Code) CSharp
Code: C# [Select]
  1. this.Left = LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.Left;
  2. this.Top = LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.Top;
  3. this.Width = LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.Width;
  4. this.Height = LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.Height;
  5.
  6. if (LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.wasMaximized == true)
  7. {
  8.     this.WindowState = FormWindowState.Maximized;
  9. }
  10. else if (LoadSettingsData.ClosedState.wasMaximized == false)
  11. {
  12.     this.WindowState = FormWindowState.Normal;
  13. }

Note: It will even restore back down correctly after an application restart if it was maximized too with my example I believe.

Did you know you can add the "Portable Extension Warlock - Launcher (PEW_Launch.exe by default) as an icon when it is displayed as a toolbar (not a menu) and have it function has a drop zone for files without needing to use my PEW_DropZone.exe?

Sample of the LaunchBar Commander setup tab
screen_05092017.png

Portable Extension Warlock can be found here.

Before/After adding the launcher remember to configure it with the PortableExtensionWarlock.exe configuration editor to point to your portable programs. Then you can drag and drop to the icon in LaunchBar Commander for portable file extensions skipping the one's used by the system if the extension is found in my program.

Disclaimer: I am the author of Portable Extension Warlock which was did as part of NANY 2012 and can also be found here.

The one thing that puzzles me is they claim it's all "at the price of one cappuccino a month" but the pricing plans page says it's $20/mo. That sounds like one expensive cappuccino to me!

It still says that if you view the source and look at the description in 2 spots.

Vivaldi in the Settings only allows you switch between Alt + Enter and Shift + Enter at the moment the way it appears. One workaround at the moment for Vivaldi is to press F2 (Default for Quick Commands.) and type it in that.
