Found Deals and Discounts / Free WinX DVD Author for download
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:51 PM »
I havn't tried this program yet.  It's supposed to be full version no restriction other than you have to download it from the source page before the deadline:

Yeah, it's the same people that did the WinX DVD Ripper that was given away a bit ago.

Post New Requests Here / Idea: RocketDock icon order flipper
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:48 PM »
When you change the orientation of RocketDock from Top or Bottom edge of screen to Left or Right edge, what was the leftmost icon becomes the topmost.  Meaning the position that was easiest to click when the orientation was horizontal, is the furthest away when the orientation is vertical.

Manually reversing all the icons would be a big pain, esp. if you decided to change the orientation back to the original.  It would be nice if there was some automatic way to reverse the order of the RocketDock icons with a click.

Seems like it should be a feature in RocketDock but since it's already stable on W7 I don't think they'll be updating it soon.

It claims both 32 and 64 bit support from XP all the way to W7:

I was happily using Paragon Drive Backup Personal 9.0 until I bought an HP PC with a Raid controller.  Paragon Rescue CD didn't support it.  I tried Macrium Reflect Free version.. no joy.  The Macrium Reflect 4.2 trial did work.  I bought that.

Now I see the Macrium Reflect Free Version
has been updated to 4.2.  I verified with the sysop on Macrium Forum that the Linux Rescue CD and the image backup file format used in the new free version is exactly the same as the one I bought. The paid version lets you download WinPE(either 32 bit or 64 bit, not both) and doubtless has some other features but if you are just looking for disaster recovery the free version may be a good choice. I put the free version on my Windows 7 32 bit PC.  I have Paragon on there but I like using the Macrium better because it saves your MBR with the backup image, where Paragon does not. That can make a big difference.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass it along since I found out yesterday about the Linux Rescue CD.

What's new in Firefox 3.7 pre?

http://mashable.com/...refox-37-screenshot/

I tried the nightly build on Windows Seven but it didn't like TabMixPlus. I reverted to 3.6 pre Aug 5 nightly build.  Looks like I'll be staying with that until 3.6 final comes out, unless something startling shows up in 3.7.

If you have Minefield 3.6 pre this installs to the same folder and updates it.  The good news is, I uninstalled without erasing settings, and just installed 3.6 Aug. 5 build again and it seems ok.  Nothing hosed afaict.

GHacks has an article for WinX DVD Ripper Platinum:

I haven't tried it myself yet but I downloaded it.  The download page gives the impression no registration is required.  May be worth a look.

Anyone know a free Windows Image Editor(like Irfanview or Photofiltre) that can read the image from a URL on the command line?

What I'd like to be able to do, instead of copying the image itself to the clipboard, opening an image editor, then hitting paste.. is just pass the URL of the image on the web to the image editor and have it load it on startup like:

ImgEditor FakeWebSiteUrl/SomeImage.bmp

and ImgEditor would open with the image loaded.

General Software Discussion / RunOperaTen available for download
« on: September 11, 2009, 04:21 PM »
RunOperaTen is a command line utility to launch Opera 10 and also encrypt the Opera Forms info when Opera is not running.  Any command line params are passed along to Opera.  So RunOperaTen is compatible with my Selector utility.

RunOperaTen will not work with previous versions of Opera.. that's why Ten is stuck on the end of the name.  Older versions of Opera used a different .ini file for form fill(Wand as it was called then) info.

The download link is near the bottom of this page:
http://www.favessoft.com/downloads.html

The zip includes a Readme.  Basically the idea is to avoid the Forms info sitting in "operaprefs.ini" in clear text.  If you have a sophisticated form filler then this is not for you.  It's just a convenience utility for those like myself who like to use Opera Forms fill, but don't like the personal info sitting in the Opera ini file in clear text when that can easily be avoided.

Once set up, when you launch RunOperaTen it simply decrypts the [Personal Info] section of "runoperprefs.ini" file, launches Opera, and waits for Opera to close.  Then it encrypts that [Personal Info] section of the .ini file again.  All there is to it.

See the included Readme.txt for particulars.

General Software Discussion / FavesSoft programs page on Softpedia
« on: September 06, 2009, 05:47 PM »
SoftPedia.com decided to add all my Hotkey utilities in addition to the ones I submitted via PAD files.  If you prefer to download from a site that virus scans and then tries the programs, you might want to download my stuff from them the first time around.  Here's the link for FavesSoft programs on SoftPedia:

I have "Numpad keys launch results from search window" checked in FARR 2.75.01 but for some reason now I have to hit Enter to get it to fire.  Before I just hit the number in the number pad. The corresponding result goes into the input line, but it doesn't launch without Enter press.

I'm running Vista64 Home Premium SP1.

General Software Discussion / Selector 3.4.3.0
« on: August 29, 2009, 09:46 AM »
Selector 1.0 is ready for general use I think.  The idea is a hotkey app in the Tray that holds a few of your favorite programs that can take the command line param from selected text or the clipboard. One example would be a browser.  Instead of relying on a plugin to open the current page in another browser hit the address bar to select text and hit the Selector hotkey(Shift-NumPadDiv by default.) Choose your browser and hit the Go button.

Currently adding programs to the list requires using a FileOpen dialog to browse to the .exe file.  A short name is automatically generated but can be edited.

At the moment there's no provision for sorting the list or rearranging the order of apps.  A later version should have a few more bells and whistles.

The program uses Glass if enabled on the system.
It requires Scripting.Dictionary object on the PC.
If you don't have Scripting.Dictionary I believe installing
the .NET 2.0 or later run-time will put it on but check the
MS web site for the correct download.  If you have .NET 2.0
or later you should have it already.

I came up with a utility called Pasty that copies selected text to the clipboard, then invokes a hotkey to an external app, and types in the text macro style.

Since there are hotkey aficionados more skilled with GUI I'm wondering if any would like to tackle the idea of a similar utility but more versatile.  Maybe handle either a selected object, clipboard contents, or text and allow it to be redirected to maybe 1/2 dozen external apps that the user could configure.  Maybe have a pop up window with buttons labeled with the name of the external app, or add them to Tray Icon Menu, or just some easy means.

Typical usage:

scenario 1)

I'm in EditPad and I type a URL.  If I double click it, EditPad will launch the default browser, but this time I want Opera to launch instead.  So I select the URL and do a hotkey or some other trigger, and I get my preconfigured apps in some kind of window or menu.

scenario 2)

I select a bunch of files in Explorer details view and I want to send them some external app.  I invoke the hotkey and my list of preconfigured apps pops up.. etc..

scenario 3)

I'm in a browser and I copy a link to clipboard.  Then I invoke this utility and if other browsers are in my configured list, I can just push a button to open with one without depending on the source browser for an AddOn or extension.

The invocation should be just a couple of actions.  Like, hotkey gets window, click button of app.. type of idea.

edit: come to think of it the list should probably be big enough for 12 or more entries since 3 or 4 are likely to be used up just by browsers, 2 or 3 by editors, several by graphics programs etc..

General Software Discussion / UpdateEnv 1.0.0.5
« on: August 19, 2009, 02:11 PM »
This is a little program that flushes the Windows Explorer environment.  Similar to flushing disk buffers to the hard drive.  I've found on some things such as changing registry entries or disconnecting a mapped network drive, sometimes it can save you from having to log off, then back on to get Windows to let go or take note of something.

http://www.favessoft.com/UpdateEnv.zip

It's a stand-alone .exe.  It uses no registry or .ini settings.  Make a shortcut to launch from the shell or run from a command prompt.

Living Room / Free Mousepads?
« on: August 15, 2009, 03:06 PM »
People on DC get around quite a bit and have been computing for a long time.  I'm curious if anyone knows of a good source to get a free mousepad sent via snail mail?  Seems like it used to be more common for these to be given out, but maybe I'm one of the few curmudgeons still using the old mechanical rubber ball mouse and everyone else is on optical.

Anyway, they come in handy.  I just got one of those BlacX USB docking ports.  It works great, but the vibration is a distraction.  I sacrificed my backup mousepad.  Sliced it to fit and put it under the base. That made me think it would be a good idea to have a few more pads hanging about for emergencies like that one!  I sent a suggestion to Thermaltake to put some vibe dampening stuff on the base.. but I was surprised rummaging around that I could find a 1.2 MB 5 1/4" floppy with a yggdrasil linux beta, but not a mousepad(other than my plain gray backup pad that is.)

I know someplace I had a small wimpy OS/2 promotional mousepad around somewhere but I couldn't find the thing!

Developer's Corner / AutoHotKey Tidy or equivalent?
« on: August 05, 2009, 04:08 PM »
Right now I'm using Scite4AutoHotKey but I'm wondering if anyone knows of another free editor esp. one that has "Tidy" or equivalent for autoindent and syntax checking. Not to start a favorite editor war, but what are people using for AHK?

I notice there's an additional exe file in the NirCmd download called nircmdc.exe.  The only line of info about it I can find is in the change log: nircmdc.exe - console version of NirCmd.

Zero mention in the .chm file.  When I try to run commands in a command window using it I get:

For more information about using this utility,
read the help file - nircmd.chm
or visit NirSoft Web site at http://www.nirsoft.net

and of course I can find no mention of it at all in the help file.. there's no search mechanism in the .chm.. nuthin'.

Is this obsolete or what?

TreePadGen 1.0 is a stand-alone exe designed to create a TreePad file with all the top level files in the target folder, as nodes.  Yet another attempt to come up with an easy way to comment downloads mainly, but may be applicable to any folder with files you wish to comment.

Usage is simple.  Double click the .exe.  The dreaded Windows Folder Selection dialog pops up.  Select a folder. If there are any top level files in the folder(does not recurse subdirectories) a TreePad file will be generated in the target folder with the same name as the folder with an .hjt extension tacked on.

The name of the folder will be the root node.  The name of each top level file is a level 1 node.  A dummy comment of "(put your comment here)" is inserted in each node.  All that remains is to type in comments for each file(or use the TreePad clipboard monitor autopaste mechanism.)

If there is a default program for opening .hjt file type, such as TreePad or TreePad Lite, on the system, after the file is created it will be opened.  If the output .hjt file already exists, you will be given the option to overwrite or cancel.

Since 64 bit is coming on bigtime, the 32 bit shell extension way of doing it is doomed.  This is a simpler approach.  I hope some of you find it useful.

The link is near the bottom of the download page on my site:

As always, it is free for you to use at your own risk. :)

General Software Discussion / SourceSnap v. 1.52
« on: June 22, 2009, 04:48 PM »
This isn't a snippet manager by any means.  Just a hotkey utility designed for snatching selected text and saving to a file.  Mainly for saving source snippets from forums.  Select text/source, hit a hotkey, a File Save Dialog is presented.  Another hotkey is available to edit the last saved file in the associated editor.

Also has a mechanism for appending a snippet, preceded and followed by a new line, to the Snap file.  Hotkeys and Snap file name are adjustable via Tray Menu.  Also has Glassy border on dialogs with selectable background color on system with Glass enabled.

See the Readme for issues involving setting the default edit program for file types on Vista/W7.

General Software Discussion / Pasty 1.5
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:32 PM »
Simply sits in the Tray.  Highlight some text and hit the hotkey to paste the selected text instantly into a search engine that opens with a hotkey.  Out of the box the search hotkey is set to Control Esc for Windows search.  But you can change the hotkeys to use other utilities such as FARR, ReOpen, Everything etc..

2 key hotkey combinations are supported and may be set via dialogs with combo boxes. If your search engine has to have a 3 key combo hotkey then you may be able to find a hotkey "adapter" or make one yourself with AutoHotKey.  I guess I hate holding down 3 keys so I'm not that psyched to have 3 combo boxes in the dialogs.  :)  Makes for simpler less buggy programming with 2 key hotkeys too.

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

Note: Paste into Windows Search requires Vista or later due to changes in the start menu. If running on XP on first use it will prompt for search hotkey for external search engine, so use FARR or Everything or another that pops up with the caret in the input control.

Just scroll down a bit for Pasty

If you find any bugs you can contact me via the Contact button on my site or do a followup here if you prefer.

Developer's Corner / Non MSDN online WinAPI reference?
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:51 PM »
MSDN seems to be Binged.  Every search ends up on the same page.  Anyone know of a non MSDN online WinAPI reference?  Hopefully something like the dll call, not some subobject?  The simplest APIs seem to be impossible to look up now with Bing snapping up all the searches or whatever is going on at MSDN.

General Software Discussion / CCleaner restore point zapper
« on: May 31, 2009, 10:02 PM »
My Vista64 runs smooth but it doesn't have that disk cleaner thing that "removes all but the latest restore point" and that's a pita.  I have to disable System Restore, then enable it again, then use a script to set the max disk space allotment.  Glad to say the new version of CCleaner has a doodad in the Tools menu to delete individual restore points.  No fuss no muss.
