moms 25.0%

What's that?  Is that some sort of jokey line item tag for a tax?

I can't say for sure but there does seem to be a value added tax in Nordic countries called MOMS.

Living Room / Re: For the Facebook Haters ;)
« on: January 03, 2012, 05:59 PM »
I'm particularly annoyed by the new arm-twisting (blackmailing?) going on in software circles where you're now required to "like" a piece of software on Facebook (or Tweet it) before you're allowed to download a lite or evaluation copy.

did it once, and undid the "Like" after - but probably wouldn't bother again

Google+ seems to have solved this particular problem: you are not allowed to "“run contests, sweepstakes, offers, coupons or other such promotions”  on a Google+ page, however you can link to a contest on your own page.

(Note this is a link to some random site I have never heard of, and their spin in that they prefer Facebook because there is more opportunity to annoy their customers.)

Living Room / Re: Upgrading RAM amount; please help me choose.
« on: January 03, 2012, 11:44 AM »
I can't think of anything anybody* would want to do on a PC that could justify more than 8Gb of RAM with today's current or projected technologies.

I've said something like this before, but this sounds so much like the old quote about 640K, I think I'll make myself a reminder to reopen this thread in 5 years.

ADDED
That said, the most memory I have had on a PC is 8GB, I had to downgrade to 4GB and I miss the extra memory although I pretty much downgraded every other component and no scientific method so I can't say that is the cause of all the slowness I have been experiencing.

1. Reinstalling this version of Firefox

Well, that's all it took. I wish I had done that in the first place instead of, you know, troubleshooting.

306
For some reason now, if I go to Manage Search Engines within Firefox (click on the search bar dropdown, and click Manage Search Engines..), click Edit Keyword, type in a keyword, and click OK, I can no longer click the second OK, as seen in the screenshot. This happens even in safe mode. It did happen right after trying to work with some Search mode plugins (Web Search Pro), however that is now uninstalled, and it happens even in safe modes with addons disabled.
Screenshot - 1_2_2012 , 3_07_15 PM.png

Going to try in order unless someone has a better idea:
1. Reinstalling this version of Firefox
2. Reverting to previous version of Firefox

Good question. I was looking for one at one point and never found one.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Release: Snap DB
« on: December 30, 2011, 12:11 PM »
Downloaded the version and I don't see any change in behavior I was referring to.
I am referring to File > Export rows to CSV file. The whole File menu disappears when I click on the checkbox for Filter/Read-Only mode.

To clarify further, it would be nice to be able to export a subset of records based on the filtered rows that are displayed.

I like the Web Search. I set it to search pronunciations from Forvo: http://www.forvo.com/search-hi/$$1 It works great from the right click menu, but nothing happens when I press Ctrl-W (which I think is generally used for "close window", but I don't know if that matters.

UPDATE:
Well "Copy Selected Rows" wasn't there before in Filter mode, right? I think I'd rather use that than export to CSV anyway, and I get tab separators. Excellent. That's probably all I need.

I was going to ask if there were any plans to allow exporting while in filter mode, but I just noticed Print kind of does that.

I took this as a BBCode editor from the screenshot, but that is just what you happened to be editing, right?
That's right, see screenshot from a "presidents" file HT Consulting gave me to play with.

Thanks for that.

I didn't know WS-FTP was still around? Does it still have its patented retro-Win 3.11 program still now that it's almost 2012?

LOL, you read my mind.

314
I remember doing this before about a year or so ago, and I've done it again. I clicked on this forum expecting some kind of programmer version of Mad Libs.

How many people read to the end of the Freeware Genius and saw the free Abbyy Screenshot Reader download. If you like Christmasware, get this and like it, let us know.

Nice find.

316
This thread inspired me to think of a short story I have fond memories of that I read in high school: The Ifth of Oofth (pdf link). It seems kind of silly now, and there is not much hard science there (not that I would care these days), but I LOVE the sense of impending doom at the end.

317
Got it done with PrefBar! And it is definitely a geek tool. Still fine tuning it because I actually want to change 2-3 settings at the same time, but this works so great I made an animated gif of my custom preference in action (used the ScreenshotCaptor Grab Repeat Last Size+Pos feature for the first time):

Nice to see Listary there, I actually am happy to use the "souped up paid version" as Samer at Freeware Genius calls it.

I better check out Otixo, too, I was just wondering which of my files were on Dropbox and which are on SugarSync not long ago.

319
It's not CSS, but the solution to the real problem turned out to be hidden in plain sight; see my update to my Unilang thread. Now I am just looking for some kind of browser addon to change this setting back and forth with one or two clicks.

I am taking it that Devanagari in that dropdown refers to the Unicode range itself, since there does not seems to be any language tags or markup that indicates it is Hindi or Devanagari text, and it works.

I remember going to a lecture where 'electron spin' got mentioned. The lecturer took pains to point out that what are called particles aren't really what we think of as physical particles. I remember his saying something like " Spin is a way of thinking about it. It's not like there's actually an object that's spinning down there."
Man!!  I had an eerily similar experience when I first started learning about spin in my quantum physics class in college.  I remember that it didn't really quite make any sense to me, like in a  special way though.  It was like I thought "this is...kind of...bullshit", but I wasn't sure if I just wasn't understanding it or something.  It was one of those weird, profound moments in my life.  That spin thing was the first time I realized that they created this concept deductively from just the math of it, rather than observing something and then fitting the math to it which is the more usual scientific way of doing stuff.
Spin is a way of thinking about it.
Such a bizarre statement.  Yet here we are with the result of all of this progress and technology.  And at the very core of it, the very most fundamental part...the electron spin...we don't even know what that really is.

"Spin is a way of thinking about it." -- Funny how "media spin" has kind of the same meaning: it is adding a layer of interpretation, a way to think about it, a way you want someone else to think about something, for good or for evil. Spin is the scientist's "spin" on what is actually happening.

All I remember from college about electron spin is four letters: s, p, d ,f...shells of probability, something. Didn't have an aha moment, myself.

Living Room / Re: A Merry Christmas card
« on: December 25, 2011, 10:10 AM »
I actually know more people offended by Happy Holidays than Merry Christmas. Every year I am wished "Merry Christmas" by Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and atheist friends. Sometimes in a group of people with unknown backgrounds, I like to say "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays" so people have to think too hard about their choice to be offended.

So Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from me!

Check out these pictures of people in India painting "Happy Christmas" on their forehead -- in English but in Devanagari script. (Yes, the Reuters caption is wrong in both 2010 and 2011. It is English not Hindi.) I think only one of the p's in happy is pronounced though, so I would lean towards using प instead of the प्प conjunct.*) The first picture also has a Christmas tree, but I didn't noticed it until some time after seeing the second one.

I wish I could put the pictures right here but I don't want to get myself or the forum in trouble with Reuters -- enjoy:

Happy Christmas 2010

Happy Christmas 2011

I wish I could find out the story behind this instead of just seeing the pictures. They should interview these guys.

---
* After thinking about it further, "Happy" is a popular first name in the Punjab (at least in the movies), so maybe it is now considered a Punjabi and Hindi word by now, with its own standard spelling in their respective scripts.
