Well, maybe I'm just one of the low life forms on earth who's not able to see through this mist of secrecy and comprehend this extraterrestrial wisdom.

Just want to say that ppl usually post and read on forums hosted on Earth (like ours) for good reasons, i.e. they want to share useful info with others, get opinions, find solutions, etc. - in the shortest time possible. I doubt posting something far beyond ppl's normal comprehension is helpful to them.

And every forum is in its essence a community in which etiquette is always appreciated.

DC forum is in my eyes, a great, cherished community. Most members here show respect for each other - not only in that they are friendly to each other, extremely low rate of flaming as you can see, but also in that they make meaningful posts in meaningful ways that help other members here find what them want, for them to be more productive. That's what I see as being respectful, and I appreciate it from time to time.

Unfortunately I failed to find the same satisfaction in your posts (99% of them, if not 100%). Last time you posted, it took me 15 mins simply trying to figure out "what the hell is that post about?" before I lost interest and gave up.

If someone fears that his post might get blast into oblivion because the forum is moderated (c'mon, which isn't?), then he must realize that it would certainly not help to make a post on a forum which does nothing but links to another (actual) post on another forum - because sooner or later there'll be enough members in the community who find this person annoying and ask him to be banned.  :)

Gri:
I, for one, request that you show respect to your/our folks who hang around here who do not want to waste their time clicking and seeing something that they might not ever understand. And I'm committed to repeating such words and this request in every single thread that doesn't make sense.  :)

Sincerely,
Anderson

Note: Firefox 3 (Gran Paradiso) alpha 1 is being made available for testing purposes only.

From Mozilla:

Gran Paradiso Alpha 1 is an early developer milestone for the next major version of Firefox that is being built on top of the next generation of Mozilla's layout engine, Gecko 1.9. Gran Paradiso Alpha 1 is being made available for testing purposes only, and is intended for web application developers and our testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox should not use Gran Paradiso Alpha 1.

Changes in this Development Milestone

Gecko 1.9 Alpha 1 introduces several new features which can be tested by using Gran Paradiso Alpha 1:

    * Cairo is now being used as the default graphics library, affecting all graphic and text rendering
    * Cocoa Widgets are now used in OS X builds
    * An updated threading model
    * Changes to how DOM events are dispatched (see bug 234455)
    * Changes to how <object> elements are loaded (see bug 1156)
    * Changes to how web pages are painted
    * New SVG elements and filters, and improved SVG specification compliance

Some of the changes in Gecko 1.9 Alpha 1 will affect the web and platform compatibility of Gran Paradiso Alpha 1:

    * Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME are no longer supported platforms
    * OS X 10.2 is no longer supported, and OS X 10.3.9 or higher is recommended
    * Moving DOM nodes between documents now requires a call to importNode or adoptNode as per the DOM specification.

Wow that's some unintelligible link you've posted there. BTW why are you so proud to be banned by SMF?

I guess it really takes a lot to get yourself banned by SMF if you are not a conventional porn spammer.  :tellme:  So that must be, in a sense, something to be proud of!  ;)

Yep indeed it's grabbing focus sometimes - like when i was typing in xchat today. >:(

Gotta look into it.

307
- post deleted, old version in mind
- No, the miss-feature is still there, but I was temporally confused by some talk of "Double click to search".

Please include the mouse in the hotkey settings!

Point the cursor to the word, and press a button & click the mouse
- it is easier and faster, says this long time Babylon user

Good idea. On-screen character recognition has always been one of the features i want to add to moby, however it seems v tricky to me and I'm not sure how to code it.  :(

Is it freeware/donationware?  :)

btw, i found no screenshot or any pics of your games on your site... hmmm is the game designed for ppl with no vision at all?  :-\

309
Boo! This doesn't work at my work! It pops up an error report window like sending a report to Microsoft except it asks to send it to my IT department.

Deozaan did it crash on load?  :o

310
would it be possible or what would you think of an option to show it as a minimizable window - I mean from the point of view of being able to Alt-Tab to it & then check recent posts -
if I am staying at computer I could minimize it to system tray - then maybe a hotkey to bring it up as a window if I'm coming & going ?
-tom

I was thinking very complicated there !  :)

A universal hotkey to bring up recent posts would cover it - think you were probably considering that anyways

I think ppl will love to see it in the Pro ver.  Added to my to-do list. :D

Also I like this "recent posts preview" idea -

The notifier displays a number of recent posts in a pop-up window upon user request and when it detects mouse hovering on the title bar of one of the posts, it shows the content of the post in a floating window and closes the window when the cursor moves out of the area. In a word, shrink and expand.

Spoiler
It shows and hides like this but you don't have to click anything  ;D

any idea? :)

311
It's hardly worth a screenshot really - just start up Excel, click a cell and start typing (*) - but here is one anyway:

I know it was kinda a silly question. But I did test it with my Excel 2007 after u reported the problem, and I failed to reproduce the problem by simply doing formula editing in cells. So I thought u could be referring to some other advanced editing environment.  ;)

312
but because at times I'm repeatedly away from the computer for short spells, I then dont know have I missed new posts or not -

I'm wondering:
is there already an option i missed out on that would help, or
have other people this problem & have solution/ideas ??

Thanks tomos. :)

I think the problem here lies in how we can effectively determine "missed notifications". Imagine the user sits right before his display when the notifier pops up, he was staring at his monitor, probably daydreaming and then only scans a few words on it and decides to ignore it, letting it automatically fade out.

Is the notification missed? Or is there a way that we can decide the person really did not see the notification?

Maybe one of the criteria could be "no keyboard/mouse activity for ## seconds", same way how screen savers work. What do you think?  :)

313
Thanks Ruffnekk, a good http proxy is much much easier to find! yay!

I tested Moby the notifier with a working http proxy set up in Internet Explorer 6

dcnotifier_ie.png

It worked, but this alone would not at all prove that the notifier connected via proxy since I always have direct connection to the net.

Then I changed the proxy to an unknown IP and afterwards the notifier refused to show anything (Show Recent Posts = nothing).

Anyone here willing to test this out for us? Thanks in advance!

314
lol Thanks tomos. Unfortunately I was only notified by mail  :(

Ruffnekk, can you give me a sc of your Internet Explorer proxy settings? :)

315
I've downloaded 1.1.25 but it doesn't work yet. Should it detect settings automatically?

Try the new 1.1.30, Ruffnekk. I confused WebRequest.Proxy with HttpWebRequest.Proxy in ver 1.1.25. Mea maxima culpa. :(

(I could have tested the proxy function more thoroughly but I just couldn't find a good Socks 4/5 proxy. >:()

btw, I think 1.1.30 looks really good with the support for DC CSS stylesheet!  :-*  :P

Screenshot - 3_01_2007 , 9_17_55 PM.png

316
Okay in that case it must be a proxy issue, because here at work I'm not getting notified of new posts either... At home it worked :(

Any chance your app can be made to configure the use of a proxy server with authentication?

Thanks Ruffnekk! I really should have thought of situations where ppl connect to the net via proxy servers.  :-[

Check out the new version:

1.1.25    Connect to the Internet via proxy/no-proxy based on Internet Explorer settings

Lemme know if it doesn't work for you. :)

317
FYI -  I have been testing this today and sometimes it does grab focus.  It just happened as I was typing in UltraEdit Studio and no more letters went to the screen eventhough I was still typing.  Earlier today this did not happen.  I couldn't see what I was typing, but when the slide faded I could see what I had typed.

Maybe it was because I set the window to be "on the top"

Code: vb.net [Select]
  1. Me.Topmost = True

I set the value back to false in 1.1.20 (just uploaded), could you help me test it to see if it still might suddenly grab focus? Thx!

btw, I will start working on the PRO version very soon (I have to! :P), you'll see some hotkey options in it. Also plz feel 100% free to let me what other features you would like to see in the PRO version (anything!)

318
Can you set up a [CTRL]+[Spacebar] or [ALT]+[Spacebar] to immediately clear the slide?  In my continued use of your app all day long, that is something that would really be helpful!

Sure! I'm on it! Also will upload a new test version in 30 mins and hope you guys will help me out on this weird grabbing focus issue.  ;)

btw, ctrl+spacebar is also used by mouser's FARR, but hey it's official hotkey is Pause/Break, right?  ;D

319
I want to see mouser finish his thesis and Ph.D in 2007 :P

Hah, I get it!

Spoiler
You MUST be one of his professors!  ;D

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

321
Oh, and another thing to keep you busy: when the notification window pops up, it gets focus, so I'm suddenly (even more) interrupted in my Really Busy Work.  >:(

That's weird, I don't experience any de-focusing of current working window at all.  :(

By "Really Busy Work", you meant game or other full-screen programs?  ;D  Could you tell me what program you were working with when your work got interrupted?

322
  • be able to temporarily disable the popups (preferably with a hotkey).

Arjen, check out the new version (fresh off the compiler ;D) and my edited guide to "sliding transparent popup windows" above. ;)

323
Definitely!

Sure, here are some! I'd like to...

  • be able to resize the notification window.
  • be able to temporarily disable the popups (preferably with a hotkey).
  • be able to customize fonts and colors.
  • see what forum users are online. (*)
  • know how you made the sliding transparent popup windows! :)

Arjen.

(*) Update: I see "Who's online" is in the context menu. Maybe changes in this page can be shown as popups somehow?

Great! I'm very happy that this tool is actually helping ppl. I'm def going to better it and bribe mouser into approving it as an official forum tool!  ;)

be able to resize the notification window.

Maybe a good idea to let users to have the option of displaying tiny/small/normal/huge/gigantic window?

be able to temporarily disable the popups (preferably with a hotkey).

I'll add this feature in an hour or so (assuming you dont care very much about hotkey).  :D  Gonna explore hotkey function in the later PRO ver.

be able to customize fonts and colors.

Yes, of course, it's already planned to go into the PRO ver.  ;D

see what forum users are online. (*)

(*) Update: I see "Who's online" is in the context menu. Maybe changes in this page can be shown as popups somehow?

Guess it won't be very hard for me to add "see what forum users are online" right now since I used to work on a tiny infamous app of which the sole purpose is to monitor mouser's online/offline status.

The Pro ver might even allows you to custom a watch list of a bunch of ppl to periodically check for their online/offline status and pop up a MSN-like notification window:

"Mouser the Evil Lord is online now! Say hello to him or click here to feed his ego with some DC credits."  ;D

Maybe changes in this page can be shown as popups somehow?

I think the viewing of Who's Online area is currently restricted to privileged users only, so there may be some difficulties implementing this feature.

If successfully coded it'll allow you to monitor mouser's almost real-time activity - could be very very fun!!

"Mouser is now posting in the Official Announcements section..." <- what's he up to?  :-\

 ;D ;D

edit:
know how you made the sliding transparent popup windows! :)

Sure! I'd love to share my code/knowledge. (Also there are quite a few open source pop up notification controls on codeproject.com.)

basically it works like this:

1. Notification window = window placed in the bottom right corner

Window Location:

Code: vb.net [Select]
  1. Me.Left = My.Computer.Screen.WorkingArea.Width - Me.Width
  2. Me.Top = My.Computer.Screen.WorkingArea.Height - Me.Height

2. Slide effect

Create a timer object and let it be that when it ticks (triggers the event) every # of milliseconds, move the window up a few pixels - until it reaches the desired location, which is

Code: vb.net [Select]
  1. Me.Top = My.Computer.Screen.WorkingArea.Height - Me.Height

3. Fade in/out effect

Use Timer + Changing window transparency/opacity

Create a timer object and whenever it ticks,

Code: vb.net [Select]
  1. Me.Opacity +=0.01   (or equally, Me.Opacity = Me.Opacity + 0.01)

(in vb.net, opacity = 1.0 means no transparency and opacity 0 completely transparent)

so every time the timer ticks (like every 30 milliseconds), the window becomes 1% more opaque (fade-in effect)

Plz let me know if you need help with it. :)

324
Okay then there's something else wrong. All links work from the menu except that one ??

hmmm, what else is wrong and which link were u referring to? :)

325
I have minor thing though: the menu for 'Show recent posts' doesn't do anything... I'm not sure if you are aware of it or not, but you may want to look at it. I'm definitely going to use this!

Thanks! Glad that u like it.

It works like this:

1. For "Check Now" and Auto-notification, the window pops up showing only the most recent post, no back/fwd buttons

Screenshot - 3_01_2007 , 12_11_20 AM.png

2. For "Show Most Recent Posts", the app fetches the most recent 10 posts and displays back/fwd buttons plus sequence number (with #1 being the most recent)

Screenshot - 3_01_2007 , 12_12_06 AM_111.png
