Skrommel's Software / Alt edge script
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:18 AM »
I find the idea very creative and the best I have tried so far. However in practice its not working so well!
I sometimes (quite often) bring up the gui when I dont want to - for instance when clicking the back button on Firefox. I guess I must move the mouse a little too far to the edge.
It would be great to  have the "hot" area smaller.  To Exclude the very top 2inches of your left screen and maybe the bottom too in case it interferes with clicking the start menu.
any hint how I could change the script in some way?

Developer's Corner / Re: Kirk Wants a New Programming Language

For the non programmers amongst us, I have yet to come across a language that would be easy to learn. Even Visual basic looks hard to me

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« on: September 14, 2010, 10:36 AM »
The first post is very outdated now, NOD32 for instance is at version 4+
as for resource usage that also changes per version. I left Kaspersky for nod because people said it was lower in memory usage but the version I tried (4.0) was not. so I guess it depends exactly what version you are comparing with what

Finished Programs / Re: r4r - Lightweight media player

can it use playlists?

82
LOL yes but for  people without xyplorer

Say you have a folder open of photos, you dont want to open an external viewer as you only want a closer look at a few pics.
on pressing with the mouse button on a picture it would blow up in size to get a better look , when you leave go of the mouse it shrinks back to normal.
Is this possible with say and .ahk script?

Post New Requests Here / request jpg resizer
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:27 PM »
What I would like is to have a ahk script (or compiled .exe) to do this
take all the photos I have in a folder  eg C:\mypics\resize    and resize them keeping aspect ratio
preferably with a choice eg 640/480  320/240  obviously the second dimension you wouldnt get if it kept aspect ration it would just be a guide (but I could probably change this myself in the script)
the scipt could use the .exe of irfanview or image magick, I have both - or anything free!

I've tried a lot but ended up sticking with stardocks object dock, it is simple to use - I like the way I can just drag a new program icon on to it or drag one off to remove it.  Most of all it used less memory than any other i tried and that is the main reason I use it instead of a similar one like Rocket dock.

You should have contacted support. Any freeze problem indicates something gone awry during installations (Microsoft VC++ redistributable, LinkmanFox.xpi etc). We can see what's wrong when you send the errorlog file which Linkman creates. As to the splash screen, it displays at most for 1.7 seconds, I don't think it's too long (unless it did not go away because it was related to the freeze problem you had). It can also be disabled in the Pro version.

Your right I should have gone to the website and tried to find out the cause.
disagree with you about the splash screen though, it was more like 3 seconds for me and well however made it might have thought it was cool to have it slowly fade in and out but its just too slow and annoying.
I uninstalled the program about 30mins after installing it, sorry.

87
Tried the latest version of Linkman light and it was no use to me,
Hated the splash screen that takes too long to go away, It didnt integrate with firefox, and it just froze too many times so i removed it.

Sidenote:  I love Roboform2Go (the portable version).  Such a great thing.  All your passwords are with you and you don't have to worry too much about losing your usb drive.  If you do need to keep a few other things secure, you can use Roboform's note capabilities.  But if you actually need secure/encrypted files beyond that, it's going to be a pain in the butt.
I was not impressed with roboform. After I installed it I started up Firefox but no toolbar visible and when I logged into a site roboform didnt start into action. To cut a long story short I had to go to their website and manually install a firefox extension to get it to work with firefox 3.6  (I did that today) finally it works.
Havent used it much yet so we will see if it works as good as the firerfox extension "Lastpass" which works well and is free.
Oh and when trying to install my antivirus program had to be shut down as it thought there was a trojan present.

Speaking of Easeus Data Recovery Wizard.

http://www.techsuppo...d-3-day-giveaway.htm
just downloaded it and tried it as i had never used a recovery prog before, hey this is good so simple to use and what a lot of stuff it recovered!

yeah well put.  I am not young any more but I remember when I was a small child the TV programs would talk about us living on the moon in the year2000+
HAA nothing much has changed apart from TV sets got bigger (and tv programs got worse) and computers are used by most people, but they still cant really handle video well.

91
you know dealing with video is the hardest and most frustrating thing I have ever tried on a computer.  I have tried practically every tool out there and it seems find but when you play it back on your DVD player, glitches, sound out of sync etc.   Even when you think You have it right you then take the DVD with you and try to play it on a Friends DVD player and you discover it was only ok for playing on yours!
Out of all the progs I tried, including Tmpgenc, converttox, winavi Xilisoft dvd creator  etc etc,   only DeVeDe  created DVDs played back fine on MY DVD player, cant vouch for anyone elses.
These days however I tend to just use a device that can take my usb straight from my pc and I dont have to convert.

92
I have heard it mentioned on a few forums and also heard people comment its great but... not easy to fathom etc.
I think its such a pity it doesnt have its own forum/website. There is a yahoo groups but I hate that format!
Anyway I was wondering what people are using it for and are you willing to describe something you go with it?

One thing i use it for is to change the screen resolution, yep I do this before doing a video capture to save cpu.memory. anyway I just use powerpro in combo with qres, so just need the command qres.exe c/:16

I also use it for pasting text snipits.

what you do use it for?

What's the Best? / Re: Best file archiver/compresser
« on: March 16, 2010, 01:24 PM »
Well an interesting read these posts. Pity it got a bit heated.
I was just wondering if I was right to keep using winrar and if there was an alternative that would compress to a smaller size. Of course speed is a consideration to a degree.
FreeArc sounds interesting but I would want multivolume support. I may try using 7zip more often (i have it installed) and compare the results with Winrar.  Yeah whatever archiver you use has to support the more common formats in case you want to send a file to somone, in that case I think it has to be .zip or .rar support. On your own machine you can use what you want.
thanks for all the views!

What's the Best? / Re: Best file archiver/compresser
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:45 AM »
Compression depends on the type of data being compressed. If you are attempting to compress an MP3, you will not save very much space as compared to compressing a word document or a plain text file.

What types of files are you attempting to compress?

yeah I know mp3 is already compressed, I was just wondering if winrar was the best or if others give you better compression.
I dont usually bother compressing word files or text as they dont take up much space. I was thinking more video files and pictures and maybe some pdf books as they can get quite large

What's the Best? / Re: best virual cd/dvd maker and image mounter?
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:26 AM »
Personally I prefer Virtual CloneDrive, but I'm forced to use Daemon Tools, since it's the only option with proper cuesheet support, which is essential for those pesky multitrack images. The program itself is nice, but I'm no fan of having SPTD installed on the system. Plus, Virtual CloneDrive lets you put a sheep as your drive icon :D

What is SPTD short for?  Spyware?

What's the Best? / Best file archiver/compresser
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:20 AM »
I use winrar, I do notice however that it often doesnt really compress that much. I also note that most files I have downloaded that are .rar files , well When i uncompress them they are hardly any bigger than the compressed form.
I have tried using best instead of fastest setting but it still doesnt save much space often, makes you wonder if you should even bother?!

I doubt it's the best, but I use Gizmo Central's Gizmo Drive to mount images.

Though I can't say I've had much need to make disc images in some time, so I'm not sure how well it does at that.
I read on the Gizmo forum that it can mount nero .nrg images but they dont work properly - I mean you cant then play the music files, you can if you mount with daemon and that is the only one that works for me so far. others also claim to handle .nrg but in practice they dont work. I have also tried power.iso and WinCDemu which claim to handle .nrg but they cant

I use several for different tasks.
A very good one is Virtual Drive - but it isnĀ“t free.
Paragon also has a really free CD/DVD-Emulator with a lot of great features like realtime compression: CD-Rom-Emulator V3.0 - I love this company because all of their products are really cool and the most of them are available as free editions.
Daemon-Tools & Alcohol are still top notch programs, but I still miss some features others have.
They seem interesting but is seems they cant create an iso or cue or whatever is that so?

I am still using daemon tools 3.7 at the moment as I have read on various forums that the later versions put spyware and rootkits on your computer, true?  Also that they interfere with the sleep function on your laptop??
