Living Room / Phone scam - pretending to be Microsoft Engineer
« on: May 24, 2011, 06:15 AM »
I've just had a call from a friend describing how their distraught daughter has had her computer "hacked" AND it was a phone call from a Microsoft Engineer that told her so...

...the "MS Engineer" then went on to tell her how to remove the virus from her machine and, no doubt, do several other things to it as the same time. Oh, they also told her that her "operating system license" had expired and so would need to renew it for the cost of £150.

Obviously, this is a total scam aimed at the non security savvy pc user. I've told her to change all usernames and passwords, etc. and will be wiping/restoring the hard drive for them later.

Seems it's a growing problem: http://www.computing...-targeted-phone-scam

(No doubt, there are better links and information elsewhere.)

Living Room / tablet screens to go blind for
« on: May 13, 2011, 10:32 AM »
Samsung tablet screens to go 300dpi. Now we really are talking HD and getting a bit closer to how the 21st Century technology should be.

PC Pro's original article here: http://www.pcpro.co....me-changing-display/

(I wish I had a bit of time to tell my mixed views about that iPad I bought. In summary, tablets are way more useful than I ever imaged - as an ebook/RSS/readitlater reading device. As a piece of design they are lacking in so many ways I don't know where to start - but the most obvious is that Apple has aimed the device at tiny little elfs with tiny little fingers - and lots of App developers seem to favour this mystical market of fairy folk too.

Tablets are going to be amazing in about 10 years time when they eventually make them for someone that doesn't have child-sized hands.)

Living Room / Apple - not quite grasping the concept of privacy.
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:42 AM »
Does it matter, well, I suppose so. Am I surprised, not really, who would be these days...

http://www.guardian....rompts-privacy-fears

It's a (Guardian) article about how mobile Apple devices are tracking and keeping records of your locations over several months. That's nice of them not to bother to ask first.

I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum about my recent unavoidable purchase of an iPad. Wraith has then demonstrated that the iPad is not total rubbish with his pioneering work deep into the dark depths of the Apple core.

My firm conclusion is that the iPad makes a nice ebook reader or quick web browser. But there's another device I've been ignoring - the Kindle, or more precisely the Kindle 3G.

Has anyone tried one, got one, stamped their heel into one? I'm very curious about the free 3G aspect, i.e. free web browsing on their "experimental" web-kit based browser.

Even in monochrome, free web sounds like a very good deal to me. FREE. 3G. WEB. Give it meeeeeeeeeee.

Okay, Amazon may decide it won't be free forever - but, I'd expect them not to charge much for the service.

Any thoughts?

Living Room / iPhone 2G any good for testing the mobile web?
« on: April 04, 2011, 12:44 PM »
Now that I've succumbed to the horrendous and overpowering bully that is Apple (with my iPad 1 purchase), I'm thinking of getting another corrupting Apple device to test things on.

I wonder, is something like an iPhone 2G good enough to test websites/apps on, simply by using its wi-fi connection - I don't need it for real life mobile use.

I'm assuming it will be fine - but for all I know, Safari might work in a completely different way on more modern iPhones.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks.

Living Room / Please kill me now - just bought an iPad off of eBay
« on: April 03, 2011, 09:22 AM »
As a someone that considers anything Apple related as anathema, I have now digitally soiled myself by buying an iPad (version 1).

My excuse: I need it for website testing as I've found that trying to emulate how Safari works on these devices (and iPhone) isn't the same as really using Safari on them. (There must be some weird Safari and OS bugs going on.)

I've also told myself that, maybe, just maybe, my parents will stop being frightened by the internet and use the tablet rather than a netbook. Yeah, fat chance - but if they do then I'll consider it worth allowing the wretched Apple machine into the house.

Now, please excuse me whilst I go and flagellate myself for being such a hypocrite.

General Software Discussion / anything better than Object Dock 2 Plus?
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:15 AM »
For years I've been looking for a way to display my Desktop files in a sidebar or side panel "thing". A kind of quick show/hide side panel that I can easily access when I have a program running in full screen view. I can't remember what I've tried in the past, nothing worked how I needed, but I recently discovered that Object Dock 2 Plus http://www.stardock....information_plus.asp does come very, very close to what I've always hoped for. (The free version of Object Dock doesn't have "folder tabs", which is what I required.)

The image below is showing my Desktop files in an Object Dock "Tab". You'll see that I've collapsed some of the groups. The tab works just like a regular Windows Explorer Folder, in that you can drag and drop files, delete them, copy them, etc. There is no need to setup which files are displayed like a static toolbar; the tab shows a "realtime" view of the desktop's (or any other folder) contents.

objecdock01.jpg

Now, this would be perfect except for a few issues:

1) The "tab" doesn't appear to remember the file display icon size, i.e. I set it to "small icons", next time I restart the machine, the files will be in "medium icons" size. Obviously, I'd prefer it to remember what I set.

2) It would be better if I could filter out some files permanently. This isn't such a big deal as I could just set the tab to view something other than my Desktop, a folder with only certain files types inside. But, I'm lazy, and I'd like to keep throwing loads of stuff on my desktop whilst I'm working with them - so filters would be handy.

3) I know I'll find more to complain about as I keep working with the Object Dock Tabs. I've only had the program a day.

Now, the reason for posting: This is the best tool I've tried that does what I want and it's not too bad a price (about £11 with 10% discount I found online). But, it's not PERFECT.

I would not be surprised to learn that there is a better tool (probably free) that does this auto hide tab function display. The important bit, though, is that it is NOT a "toolbar"; there is no need to configure which shortcuts or files/folders to display before it starts working - it just shows everyting in the set folder, i.e. it updates in real-time.

Now, I'm wondering, maybe something like autohotkey could just make a modified folder appear like a side panel - AND make it autohide until triggered by the cursor hitting the side of the screen.

Or, maybe there's something already better at the job than Object Dock 2 Plus.

I tried to do something similar with Directory Opus but, as far as I can understand, you can't have different toolbar layouts saved in Directory Opus. You can have different "Lister" layouts but they don't remember specific toolbar arrangements - if they did then I could simply have a Lister that hid all menus and toolbars and just showed folder contents.

Aare there any suggestions, other than just use a "toolbar" or add a new drop-down menu like "toolbar" to my Taskbar. I'm on Windows 7 so I can't even drag system "toolbars" away from the main Taskbar like you could years ago.

Thought this was quite nice for an on-the-fly spell-checker, thesaurus, translator too.

Living Room / NoteSlate - mono color tablet, nice price
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:39 PM »
I'm not too bothered about the iPad-like tablets, NoteSlate is a bit different as it's all about keeping it simple - and with a pen. Looks like a good price and could well be the machine to use instead of a sheet of paper and a pen.

I really have no idea about Drupal, other than mouser hates it and has made a cogent post about why it should be avoided. I know it's "powerful" whatever that may mean. It sounds tantalisingly mysterious - perhaps not unlike an illicit drug; I want to know what the Drupal experience is - must be quite a high when you make sense of it all - or, you just have a bad-trip and vow never to touch it again.

Well, I've been working with Joomla! and the database whiz-bang thing called Fabrik you can stick inside it. All this has been to get it to do a job that now sounds like Drupal should have been used for. I wouldn't have known that but I've just read this blog post by Tom Arah: http://www.pcpro.co....a-1-6-vs-drupal-7-0/ and the user comments section describes exactly the job I've been trying to do with Joomla!

I have been so frustrated with Fabrik; tantalised by the promise of what it can do and then finding it the most stressful thing I've done on the computer for years - if not ever. So, my reasoning is this can't be much worse than trying to learn Drupal - maybe I'm deluded but I'm telling myself Drupal will be more fun. Drupal does "everything" so I can't go wrong there with too high an expectation.

Anyway, the point of this post is to just say, I'm at the beginning of the Drupal journey. I'll report back if I don't abandon the quest after a few days. I will be careful; I don't want to get my arm trapped under my keyboard like Aron Ralston - and then have to try and chop it off with the blunt edge of my mouse. (I think I'm already delirious - obviously mentally exhausted by the Joomla! misadventure.)

(Mentioned elsewhere on the forum) I've been using a Logitech MX Revolution for about 2 years. I would still be using it but the left mouse button has decided to misbehave - which means I drag files into the wrong place, select things I didn't want to, etc. I've tried making one of the other 11 (or is it 13) buttons a Left Click but it just doesn't feel right. I've also tried cleaning the inside and sprayed some dw40 into the switch - which may have made it worse.

So, I've decided I'm not going to buy another super-duper mouse with loads of buttons - they've lost my trust.

Instead I'm going to use StrokeIt for all the extra mouse commands and just use a cheap, simple 3 button mouse instead. One cheap enough to not care if the buttons start acting randomly - I'll just throw it away and get another cheap replacement.

The question is: does anyone have an opinion on the best "cheap" mouse. I'm currently using a 3 button Logitech, it doesn't even have scroll left/right on the wheel. This would be fine but I can't seem to stop accidently hitting the right mouse button - I blame the shape of the mouse and the flimsy spring under the mouse buttons.

Are there any "good" cheap mice. Something "ergonomic" perhaps. Or just something that doesn't have flimsy mouse buttons.

Thanks.

Okay, I *feel* this can be done - but I'm wondering if I can avoid using a remote desktop (that's the obvious method, to me, at least).

The scenario:

My ISP (TalkTalk in the UK) doesn't provide a static IP. I'd have to migrate to their Business Broadband, which will cost me about double my current monthly charge and the only thing I'll gain is a static IP.

I could jump ship and sign up to another ISP. That will also mean paying more than I do now, plus I'll have the stress and worry of transferring to another provider - who I may then find doesn't provide good service.

All I need is a static IP - or access to someone else's static IP via a remote connection maybe. Perhaps this is a rubbish idea and there's a much better way.

The requirement is that I need to access a database on someones server and they will only allow me to do so if I have a static IP. This is related to potential future work for me - so, I need to make the effort to get the new IP but I'd really like to keep it cost effective too.

A remote desktop would work, but it seems a bit clumsy to me; because I'd also have to allow for the bandwidth of the remote desktop display coming to me - I've only got a 1 meg line so it's not ideal for such things.

So, is there a way I can connect to the remote PC, use its static IP (well, the IP of the router at the location) but avoid using a remote desktop.

I suppose the idea is like using a proxy - but it's one that will provide me with the very same static IP every time I need to access the specific database/server.

Thanks.

for, at least, a week i've been unable to view any pages over at www.head-in-the-clouds.com - every attempt just times out.

nor can i access the head in the clouds server using my, once working, FTP settings.

using a proxy service like "hide my ass" allows me to view the HITC website without any problem.

the question is...

does this look like my IP (or mac number) is being blocked by the HITC server, or does it look like my ISP is blocking access to the HITC server? or is it something else completely - or is it impossible to say?

it doesn't matter which computer i use in the house, i've not tried changing the router (so maybe that's the problem). everything worked fine up until this week - it's not like i've changed any network settings on the router or anywhere.

any ideas. thanks.

I learnt to solve the Rubik's Cube during the first craze by reading this book: The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube by James G. Nourse.

It was 1981, I was 12 years old, bored out of my brain holidaying in a very rainy Wales and using a cheap micro sized cube - actually a novelty keyring, not much more than a couple of inches in width.

Sometime soon after, I forgot a few of the algorithm solutions but would muddle through with what I could remember and still solve the cube, albeit taking longer than necessary. I couldn't relearn the correct algorithms as I'd lent the book to someone, I can't remember who now, but I never got it back.

So, I've spent the past 30 years solving the cube with my messed up method. Knowing that it wasn't quite right but also knowing that it would always work - eventually. (There's a moral in there somewhere.)

Recently, I holidayed in Madeira, this time taking a new book: Speedsolving the Cube by Dan Harris. The intention was to master a new and better cube solving technique. The book is easy to understand and provides simple and complex solutions for cubes 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 (which I can all complete using my inefficient half forgotten method, though, doing the 5x5 can take me about 2 hours, or more, to complete).

But, whilst reading this new and improved book, I realised I was doing the wrong thing. I already had my own method, I haven't the time nor patience to learn a new method; instead I would simply work out where the algorithms I used where going wrong. It would be more satisfying solving the 30 year old mystery I'd lived with.

It didn't take long to realise when and why I should use some of the half remembered algorithms, they were quite obvious in the end. Now, the sense of knowing exactly how to approach a particular pattern with a specific algorithm is very satisfying. But, I knew that I didn't have the complete method for my solution - I could remember the book demonstrating more algorithms than I used; or that is what my faded memory told me - who can say what was in a book that you've not seen for 30 years.

Last night, I decided to try and find the method used in the book. I knew it was an unpopular method, cube solving has progressed over the years, but I thought that after a lot of searching online I'd find some mention of this outdated solution.

Surprisingly, it didn't take long at all. I searched on eBay for Rubik's Cube books and spotted the book cover in the results (or what I thought could be the cover). Enlarging the image of the cover then revealed the author of the book, so another search was done - eventually I found a downloadable version of the book: in .djvu format (something I've never heard of before). After downloading a reader program for the file I scanned through the pages and saw the black and white cube diagrams I'd not seen for 30 years - A M A Z I N G.

I've now waiting for the real book to arrive from an order I placed using Amazon Marketplace (quite a few old copies are for sale on there).

So, after all that, why I have troubled you with this little tale?

It's taken 30 years to pass for me to find that book, a genuinely special book that must have influenced the person I became (I hated school and studying so I didn't read any books as a child, yet I persevered with that one). I could have searched for the book sooner, I could have tried to work out where I was going wrong with my cube solution sooner. It didn't matter until now.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that the Internet is amazing - within just a few short minutes last night it managed to transcend 30 years and show me something I doubted existed anymore. It's just an old book - with a less than perfect solution inside (there's a moral in there somewhere).

(as usual, i've tried to do this and decided after an hour of searching/messing about - i can't do it.)

i'd like an .ahk script that performs similar to the "winkey + space" combo on Win7 - which makes all visible windows transparent UNTIL THE WINKEY IS RELEASED.

that's the important bit - i want to enable something whilst keys are down, then disable the action when releasing the windows key (very much like how alt+tab works, or winkey + tab).

it seems like it ought to be simple and i'm sure it is if you a well versed with the language of ahk.

so, to be a little more precise, here's what i'd like to do.

1. hit winkey + anotherkey

2. action happens, e.g. focussed window becomes transparent (temporarily). note: winkey is still held down.

3. release winkey, action stops, e.g. focussed window returns to opaque.

i'd like to have other actions happen with other winkey combos so the ahk script just needs to "Send" keys as the action. hopefully, i can then just edit the script to perform other Send hotkey combinations (which will, mainly, trigger ActualWindowManager actions).

i know AHK can perform transparency and roll-up but i've already got this covered with AWM - it's just the toggle feature with the winkey that i need AHK for.

i've found there is a problem with holding the combo keys down as it cycles the action continuously, i.e. windows cycles through transparency to opaque to transparent to opaque, etc., etc.

so, the down hotkeys need to initiate the action, which "Sends" the associated hotkeys to ActualWindowManager...

...then, whilst the winkey is still down, the AWM hotkeys are released and remain released - thus, preventing the rapid cycling problem...

...then, the winkey is released, which then triggers the very same ActualWindowManager hotkey combination that was used in the first place.

hopefully that makes sense - and isn't impossible to do with AutoHotKey.

Thanks

Living Room / tc1100 tablet pc dies before i've even set it up
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:51 AM »
the tale of the HP tc1100 tablet pc...

bought on ebay for £180.

took 3 weeks for the seller to send me the machine and then he forgot to post me the power supply - had to wait a couple more days for that.

used it for about an hour - just messing about.

thought i'd try windows 7 on it - plugged in my external DVD drive (via usb)

alarming POP! sound from inside the tc1100.

now the machine is dead.

wonderful.

i may just smash the unit it up so i'm not tempted to waste time on it trying to get it to work.

(at least, i can be thankful it wasn't an iPad - but then, i wouldn't have been able to plug an external DVD drive in would i.)

i'm trying to make the best use of my MS Sidewinder X6 keyboard but it comes with the absolutely atrocious Intellitype macro/hotkey manager program (someone must have wasted a lot of days writing that bit of less than optimal code).

So, i'm using autohotkey and a few registry hacks to make the macro buttons on the Sidewinder use Virtual Keys.

this is the chart i'm using as reference: http://api.farmanage...virtualkeycodes.html

i've been playing around and it appears i can use the "Reserved", the "Undefined" and the "Unassigned" keys without much problem. (some specific keys don't work and a couple did appear to be already in use with my scroll wheel.)

the question is: i'm assuming it's not really safe to use the "Reserved" keys; as they must be "reserved" for a reason. but, i've no idea if it's safe to use the "undefined" and the "unassigned" keys. i mean, they work fine - but am i going to find conflicts one day. are they really, really, out of use keys that the operating system will never need?

and, i suppose, you can add to that: are these "Reserved" keys really that important. are they likely to ever be used OR are they in use right now - it just isn't declared what they are for.

i've been away a couple of days without net access, on returning i see that i'm currently going through the process of having a PayPal transaction disputed for me - for an item i certainly didn't attempt to buy, an iPhone 4 at 975 dollars. i mean, yeah, like i've secretly always wanted one.

hopefully it will be resolved quickly. i've no idea how they've done it, the "seller" claimes to be from Algeria and i've meant to have been the winning bidder via eBay. strange that my eBay account displays no history about this "seller" or the iPhone they have fraudulently sold me.

what disturbs me (currently) is that this is meant to be an eBay related transaction and yet it isn't in my eBay records. how on earth is this thief doing it (don't answer; don't give anyone any tips if you already know).

PayPal is obvioulsy thinking along the same lines otherwise they wouldn't have flagged the transaction for investigation. now i just have to wait for the "seller" to reply to PayPal with their version of the story. i'm hoping this doesn't drag out into some kind of Kafkaesque dispute where i have to prove i didn't bid on an item that never passed through my eBay account.

Living Room / Android and iPhone differences - a webcomic

I Can't Draw Feet (webcomic):

a few credits are awaiting if you can just write a bit of a script that does the following, please...

1. monitor number of screens (physical LCD monitors) currently enabled.

2. when number of screens changes - RELOAD a specific ahk script - or, list of scripts.

3. keep monitoring number of screens ready for next reload of script(s).

the problem is that i swap between single screen enabled and multi-screen enabled quite often and i forget to reload my autohotkeyscripts. this means that one of the scripts, DialogMove, isn't aware that the screen number has changed and so doesn't work correctly (until i reload it).

i'd ask Jgpaiva if he'd modify the DialogMove script but:

a: i think he's far to busy.
b: i think that the script i'm requesting might be useful with other scripts that need reloading (or programs that need reloading that i don't know of right now). so, just asking for DialogMove to be modified wouldn't help with other, potential, script problems.

thanks.

edit:
i've just realised i've another program running that doesn't appreciate when enabled screens has changed. it's a small util called "Y'z Shadow".

so, it would be very helpful if the script i've requested above does also have the ability to load in exe files and not just scripts.

thanks again.
