The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / pc fasting (from lifedev.net)
« on: September 15, 2006, 04:32 PM »
i don't think this has been mentioned before...

pc fasting, i.e. limiting your time at the computer. productivity went up, etc, etc. makes a whole lot of sense to me - but then i tend to get away from the computer for a good few hours each night anyway.

here's the link if you are interested: http://lifedev.net/2...06/09/computer-fast/

Living Room / Cody's coins - made from what?
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:58 PM »
OldElmerFudd made the remark that the coins that cody eats are, or should be, made from chocolate.

just like cody's height, i'd like to know what everyone thinks the coins are made from.

Living Room / story/idea note keeper
« on: September 07, 2006, 01:56 AM »
the DC GTD experiment has finally made me go through all my old note books and scrap bits of paper i've been keeping for story ideas (kept about 50%, burnt the rest).

i'd like a bit of advice on what software to use to store all this information - i'm sure there are DCers out there that already have a method of keeping this sort of thing organised.

it seemed obvious to me, at first, to use something like ms word but then i thought that i'd have a hard time moving the ideas about and keeping check on them. so, it then seemed obvious to use a notetaker (see superboyac's great review https://www.donation...Archive/NoteTakers1/ ) but then i'm not sure if i'll just have to export all these notes to word when trying to flesh out the story. so is there any software in between that keeps notes and acts like a word processor - or does even more, as i'm sure i don't fully appreciate what is involved when working on this kind of material.

any tips from all you authors out there - for software or just methods of making sense of all the cross referencing between notes that i expect will be invovled?

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / i have the last laugh.
« on: September 05, 2006, 04:48 AM »
i mentioned before that i quit my job about two weeks ago - absolutely no regrets about it.

i've just received a phone call from the old 'boss' begging me to go back as they have too much work to do - ha, ha, ha - tough. i timed my resignation so that it would cause the most amount of trouble for them - i am so happy. ha, ha, ha.

thankfully, i won't even consider their request as i've got a full schedule with the new found motivation and energy i have discovered through the DC GTD experiment.

fantastic.

Living Room / raid 0 - lots of fun
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:19 AM »
woke up this morning, turned computer on and up came a message:

"you are an idiot, you are using raid 0, something is about to fail, back up your data now."

(at least, that's the way i remember the message.)

great. this pc isn't even 12 months old and it's started acting stupid. oh well, time to start backing things up - start again and realise i forgot to back something up.

Living Room / how tall is Cody?
« on: September 01, 2006, 10:38 AM »
I'd like to know how tall everyone thinks Cody is, as it will help me do some DC/Cody things I'm doing - or I may just ignore the result if Cody tells me to.

as suggested by mouser, here are a few work-in-progress wallpapers that have different sizes of Cody in them. (I will upload the finished versions, and more besides, when the size issue has been resolved.)

Living Room / iexplore.exe - be warned
« on: August 26, 2006, 07:41 AM »
my machine is currently infected with a trojan or something.

after startup i have a new file 'iexplore.exe' trying to access the internet - each time i delete the file and then restart, the said file has moved to a new location (please don't start announcing that iexplore.exe is internet explorer - this particular file that keeps appearing is definitely something nasty).

i looked around the web and there appears to be plenty of confusion and not particularly brilliant advice about getting rid of it - virus and trojan scanners seem to be unable to find the file if the comments on other forums i've read are correct.

here is the most helpful page i've found that deals with the problem http://www.jimmyr.co...E_Virus_230_2006.php (not actually tried his method yet but will do in a minute).

i wouldn't make such a post but this is the first time my machine has been infected for a long time - and i can't even remember a time that my scanning software seemed completely oblivious to the fact that the machine is infected.

here's a question and an observation i have...

it's just occurred to me that i have several list taking 'devices'. i have notebooks from years ago, bits of scrap paper - also from years ago, note taking software - things like 'texnotes' and 'mylife organized' and i'll even include 'surfulator'. i've a pocket pc - with lists on it, of course and then there's ms outlook. and, there's always that carousel of lists/ideas floating around in my head at any given moment in time.

so, what's my point?

i've used for a brief period and then abandoned each of these note/list recording devices (except for my own head) and then tried to find another method of keeping the information stored. i've put the blame onto the device for not magically transforming me into a 'doer' rather than a 'dreamer'. i fear that this is just going to happen again with the next method i take up.

the problem is that i'm just rewriting the lists - maybe this is good as it allows me to weed things out - but it obviously wastes time as there really shouldn't be a need to keep blaming the 'device' and then moving onto a new one. i've now reached the point that i've become sceptical that a list taking method/device will work - which is not something i like as i'm obviously being prejudiced and blaming the tools rather than the workman (which is me in this case).

i'm wondering if this is a common reason for GTD failure?

if anyone knows of a way that i can stop blaming the tools then please let me know. thanks.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Control Freak - living in the game
« on: August 01, 2006, 01:26 PM »
do you get enough done? are you a hardcore 'procrastinator'? have you read loads of 'self-motivation' blogs and felt inspired to become more organised and productive only to become disillusioned after your life didn't change the very next day? then read on, we may be able to help each other...

my IDEA revolves around using 'gameplay' or 'competition' to help oneself get things done - the things you keep promising yourself that you'll do but because there isn't someone standing over your shoulder with a whip, you just keep finding other things to do.

i've not fully fleshed out what is required so this IDEA request is as much a plea for other like minded people to jump in and offer suggestions to make the 'game' work.

my belief is that one way of getting things done is by using peer pressure or by incorporating a competitive element. so, in order to get the things done that you keep putting off for absolutely no good reason we make a kind of pact - we vow that we'll play by the rules of the game i'm about to outline and by doing so, your incentive will be to do well in the game, which is as a direct result of your non procrastinating efforts.

the basic idea for the 'game' is this:

you outline your tasks for the oncoming week (or whatever time period - the game can accommodate this) that you wish to accomplish. you assign a value for each of your tasks, maybe something as simple as 1 point for a completed task and 0 points for task unfinished - perhaps even negative points could be incorporated into the rules of the game.

your planned 'task list' is then made public to the other people playing the 'game' - your task list does not have to be descriptive it can simply be a list of 'task 1, task 2, task 3, etc, etc.', providing the task numbers represent something real to you then you can keep them private.

throughout the week you then keep score of your activities - earning a point for each successfully completed task. there would be no point in cheating as trying to distort the truth of your activities would obviously mean you are merely continuing to procrastinate - the only real victory comes from the knowledge that you have honestly awarded yourself the correct points to the tasks you said you would complete.

the points and finished tasks are then posted to the 'gameboard' which keeps score for all of the players. this could be updated daily or weekly - or perhaps there could be separate categories for different levels of procrastinator to enter into.

trivial planned tasks that are solely created to earn easy points would not be allowed - again, this is simply down to the individual player to decide upon - they are only cheating themselves if they are not overcoming 'real' procrastination.

throughout the game the players may post comments on how they are performing and encouragement may be given by other players - perhaps the game rules could be designed in such a way that other players could award points to another players successfully completed task - bonus points for a particularly 'procrastinatory' task.

now, as i said, the main reward is the fact that the player is overcoming stagnation and getting things done. the 'fun' incentive is to earn points and move up the 'control freak' scoreboard and have a bit of fun by participating against fellow procrastinators - these being your 'virtual' peer group.

there isn't really any 'coding snack' involved for the project idea - well, it would be nice to have an online scoreboard and means of posting comments for proposed task lists and words of encouragement.

obviously, a lot of this is already going on here at DC and at other forums - i'm merely trying to create a 'game' dimension so that there is hopefully another incentive level to do things.

i could just start playing 'Control Freak' the game myself but it's really not going to be anywhere near as much fun as playing it with a group of people - like most games.

of course one would have to 'embrace' the philosophy of the game - rather like one might embrace Luke Rhinehart's 'The Dice Man' http://www.lukerhine...t/books5.html#anchor

potential players/contestants please announce yourselves...

Living Room / portable air conditioning - any good?
« on: July 04, 2006, 06:28 AM »
i'm english therefore when the weather turns hot during the half-a-dozen days of the year, i can't take it. my brain shuts down and i just dream of finding a cool dark hole to lie down in.

unfotunately i can't put my computer in such a hole so i'm thinking maybe one of these portable air conditioner things would be the solution.

so my question is: does anyone use one and are they any good?

thanks

Living Room / how to pronounce 'Haneke'
« on: June 18, 2006, 01:34 PM »
okay, this has absolutely nothing to do with software or computers but i'm hoping that those around here that understand languages other than english will know how to pronounce the name:

Haneke

as in the director Michael 'Haneke' http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0359734/

is it 'han-ek' or 'han-eek' or 'han-eh-key' or 'han-er-ker', etc, etc?

as you know i have a thing about pronouncing names correctly so any 'correct' suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

General Software Discussion / soft and hard links in ntfs
« on: June 14, 2006, 12:43 AM »
i found a link on shellextension city for this little app, 'NTFS Links' http://alax.info/blog/ntfslinks

can someone just explain why i'd want a hard or soft link and not just a shortcut?

i'm not trying to say hard and soft links are a waste of time - i just feel like i'm missing out on something that could be useful but i can't understand their purpose.

thanks.

General Software Discussion / anyone used netlimiter pro 2
« on: June 09, 2006, 01:46 PM »
i'm going to be using netlimiter to control my download rates at different times of the day - but i'm wondering if anyone has used its firewall feature.

i currently use zone alarm (free) so i'm expecting the netlimiter firewall to very similar.

i'm curious as to whether anyone has any bad stories about it, i.e. does it crash - i noticed that the previous version of netlimiter, without the firewall, would sometime crash on my system - if the version 2 is just as likely to crash then the firewall isn't going to be of much use.

Living Room / time to accept it...
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:09 AM »
"Procrastination is not a problem of time management; time-management skills won't cure it."

taken from the article: http://www.psycholog...20060324-000001.html

the above quote doesn't bode well for all the procrastinators on this forum - especially with all the time management programs being tried out.

we're all doooooooooomed.

i can imagine that this has been discussed before and i might have not taken much notice but as i'm starting to get annoyed with my system i'm going to ask...

i'd like a little program that can remember my file to program associations - including the icons that i've set for the file types.

i'm tired of programs steeling file associations even when i've specified for them ignore a file type - i'm also tired of programs changing the icon appearance for a file type - even when they aren't the default program to open that file.

i'm hoping there is something out there that would allow me to specify the relationship of file type to program and the respective icon - maybe a custom icon i've chosen from an icon pack i have.

the most important bit would be that this program would be able to save out my list so that on the next time i do a major reinstall, or simply that a program steels a file association again, i can open up my saved list and quickly set all the associations back - and the icons -with just a couple of clicks.

that seems like a reasonable thing to me to expect in this day and age - there must a few programs capable.

any suggestions for a good util that will do it?

thanks

i'm about to describe something that has 'probably' been done already elsewhere - if so can someone please let me know what the program is called...

if not, then i think this is another autohotkey task - i'd have a go myself but i much prefer to dish out the DC credits to someone that can save me the headache.

anyway, this is my request:

i've a 24" widescreen monitor (which i seem to keep telling everyone) and i'd really like to make full use of it, well, as it's so wide i'd like to use it like a dual monitor layout sometimes.

i'd like to be able to drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen and after a short pause the window would resize itself to fit the right half or the left half of the monitor.

this could be extended so if i drag a window the the bottom edge it will resize to fit the bottom half OR some other resize.

this type of drag window auto resize could be extended further so that there would be specific areas along the left and right and bottom edges of my screen (NOTE HOW I SAY BOTTOM - that's just because i have the system taskbar and system tray at the top of my screen), these specific areas would act as the triggers to auto resize the window to preset window sizes and locations.

so, as an example, i'd drag my web browser to the left of the screen - when the mouse cursor reaches the edge of the screen i pause and hold the window title a bar a second or two then it auto resizes to fit just the left part of my monitor.

if i drag to the window and pause on LOWER left side of the screen then the window auto resizes to fit the lower left quarter - a similar thing would happen on the right hand side of course if i dragged it there.

the bottom and top edges of the screen could trigger several other window sizes and positions, say, drag to the top middle and the window centers and resizes to 1024x768 or whatever.

i think this idea could be extended further - these are just the things that occur to me straight away.

i know there are keyboard shortcuts for this sort of the thing that have been done before - which is great - i'd really like to have both features really: user definable keyboard shortcuts for the main auto resizes and mouse drag trigger borders too.

thanks for listening.

i'm in the UK. a current trend here is for internet service providers to limit the download/upload limit you have each month - you pay more to transfer more or sometimes pay a hefty amount for truly unlimited (i.e. Zen).

my isp has decided that they are going to monitor the hours of 4pm to 12midnight - during this period the bandwidth is monitored and if you exceed a certain amount during the month then restrictions are enforced on your account. (currently they are actually monitoring from 8am to 12 midnight so it's even worse.)

the download/upload limit that is set on my account at the moment is 30 gig max (email warnings are sent at 24 gig). this isn't so terrible as i can download things through the night without any bandwidth restrictions but i have once exceeded their 30 gig limit and don't really want to do it again - they will expect me to upgrade my account - i pay £23 a month already so it's not on the cheap side here in the UK.

anyway, enough introduction, what i'd like is just a little meter running in the system tray that displays how much i've uploaded and downloaded - combined, during the hours of 4pm to 12midnight. this would need to start at zero each month and then accumulate until it was reset again the following month (or could be manually reset).

i'm hoping this could be done using autohotkey so that the script could be easily changed or included inside another ahk script. if possible, if the script could also output to a txt file i could then set samurise to read the output data into a meter i could create - i have a tiny samurise display running at all times that's on top of all other windows that would be just right to show the bandwidth level.

i've already checked to see if samurize could do the task i'm requesting but the problem is the accumulative specific interval monitoring.

hope that is enough info. a DC credits reward is on offer, of course.

thanks.

https://www.donation...=302.msg2140#msg2140

this original request was made a few months ago but it appears no one was up for the challenge - so, i'm resurrecting the request with a reward for 100 DC credits to anyone that can create a satisfactory util (preferrably using autohotkey so that it would be easy to modify).

and now for a quick explanation of what i'd like:

i've a very large monitor, a 24" widescreen LCD (this may or may not be seen as an attempt at compensating for other inadequacies).

i've always been irritated (even with smaller monitors) how i have to keep moving my cursor to the center of the screen to acknowledge small dialog boxes that appear throughout the course of my pc use.

what i would prefer, is that the small dialog window would move itself automatically to fall somewhere under where my cursor is at the time of clicking the button that caused the small dialog window to appear.

e.g. CURRENTLY, i click on a button at the far edges of the screen that requires some kind of confirmation, so a small dialog window appears in the center waiting to be clicked and acknowledged. okay, i move my mouse to the center and click BUT i'm going to move my cursor back to the original area where i first clicked the initiating button as that's where i'm 'working' with OTHER buttons and things.

INSTEAD, i would click on a button at the far edges of the screen and if a small dialog window appears in the center it would then automatically jump so that it positions itself under where the mouse is. the mouse is still hovering over the button that has just been clicked.

i know, i know. there are methods for the mouse to jump to the button that is in focus but i really can't stand that way of working. it still requires me moving my attention away from where my cursor originally was and then moving it back again. and, i don't want this to work with all windows so i wouldn't want the cursor jumping around all over the screen every time a new button comes into focus.

i've attempted to create my request using autohotkey but i don't have the programming skills to make it work correctly. i can make small windows jump to the cursor but they then become STUCK to the cursor position and move around with it...

the trick would be that the dialog window jumps to the the cursor position and then releases itself so that it doesn't continuously keep trying to center itself under the cursor. you can't click on any buttons, of course, if the dialog window keeps automatically moving around.

the other point to consider is that the automatically jumping window would have to remain fully on screen regardless of whether the cursor was at the very edges, i.e. if the cursor was close to the screen edge the window would have to position itself close to the cursor but not so close it goes off the edge.

i really only want this to work for the small dialog windows that appear, things like save/open/close/'confirm file delete' or anything else of this small size.

i'd like to be able to figure all this out with autohotkey as i'm sure it is possible but i believe it would be a very quick coding snack for those of you that already know how to script. it would take me several hours/days of messing around without any guarantee that i'm heading in the right direction.

thanks for your time...

197
i better explain what i was trying to say in the 'subject' line:

i have the system tray at the top of my screen with autohide and always on top enabled. this is something i've only just started doing but i kind of like it.

there is something that is beginning to get tiresome and that is when closing a maximised window i tend to overshoot the 'X' icon and the system tray appears (my fault, as i've pushed the cursor too far into the corner).

what i would like is something that would 'kill' the 'sensitivity' in the top right corner of the screen. it would need to be an area with a width similar to the system clock and then about 2 to 5 pixels in height.

this would allow me to throw the cursor up to the top right of the screen without the system taskbar being activated but i could still activate it when moving the cursor to the top anywhere else.

i think there is already a util that will delay the 'hover' activation time for the taskbar to appear (anyone remember the name?) but i'd really prefer it if it worked in the method stated above.

thanks for your time...

there used to be a browser called 'broadpage' that allowed you to view two (or more) web pages at the same time within a single window, similar to tiling windows vertically on the desktop.

alas, 'broadpage' is no more.

but, oh joy, here  comes 'tablane' http://www.tablane.com

for me, the most beneficial feature that tablane has, is the ability to open links from one pane directly to the adjacent pane, i.e. you could keep your search results in view whilst each result that you clicked upon would then open alongside in the next pane, or 'lane' as the authors of the program like to call them.

okay, you can achieve similar results by opening two browsers on your desktop and tiling them, then simply dragging links from one window to the other - but it wouldn't be as much fun as using 'tablane'.

it's early days for the browser, there are bugs and not many options but i think it shows promise. i'll not be using it as my main browser but i'll certainly be tempted to give it a try when i know i'm going to be browsing several sites at a time (which is a lot now that i think about it).

i've still not tried 'firefox' (shock, horror) so i wouldn't be too surprised if there is a plugin that behaves in a similar way to 'tablane'. if there is i'd like to hear of it please - the point being that a link, when clicked, will automatically open up in the next 'pane' and not the 'pane' the link is in.

(if there is a plugin for 'maxthon' that performs this kind of function then i'd like to hear about that also - if firefox can do it then it may well be the thing that finally makes me a convert.)
