Find And Run Robot / Public release ? Next Update ?
« on: October 15, 2007, 04:46 AM »
Hi Mouser,

i really think you should release FARR as soon as possible, it's no big deal not having all the material for the public release... (screencasts and all...) well at least in MHO

FARR topic seems kind of dead... i keep reporting bugs with no feedback... there is no update since mid august, that's 2 months !

FARR webpage always states that :
Public Release Will Happen in
JULY AUGUST 2007

anyone discovering donationcoder now would think FARR is a dormant project, i'm sure you are putting many efforts into the project, but we just don't see it like we did few months ago...

there is no doubt in my mind that FARR is the most advanced launcher (for windows), and your more important software project...
i also believe that the current version is not the 2.00.142, please share it with us, so that we can report back to you.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, i know it's hard for you to let FARR go public, you said it...
BUT it's time to make a choice :
  • you release it
  • you work on FARR like you did few months ago : frequent updates

Keep up the good work :Thmbsup:
Nitrix

PS: i also realize that FARR is only a small part of what's keeping you busy  ;)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Folders bug
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:31 AM »
i think this is a bug with the - characters being treated as keyword modifiers by FARR and stripped out.  it was posted about in the past and i think i can fix it, sorry i haven't yet.. look for an update next week.

@mouser, any news regarding the update ?
give us some hope, it's been 2 months since the last one, please, please  :-[

Find And Run Robot / [bug report] showmemo command
« on: October 09, 2007, 12:41 PM »
@mouser,

i noticed a bug using the showmemo command :
only the first line break (\n) works ...

PS: i'm still hoping for a enhanced showmemo command
with the possibility to specify a txt file or even better a url.... with an integrated web browser

Find And Run Robot / Re: Can't get keyword modifiers to work at all
« on: October 09, 2007, 11:18 AM »
I updated, but nitrix-ud was right about the capitalization.

the rule i use for keywords are :

  • don't use capitals (that is as long as the bug exists)
  • prefix folder keyword with folder and action keyword with action (this is to avoid using the same name for both an action keyword and a folder keyword... which results into bugs...)

try to rename you keyword : dox

i think FARR does not like capitalization !

i agree with thomthowolf

FARR won't break your computer, it still crashes sometimes under very specific conditions

but overall, it is an amazing app  :D

Find And Run Robot / Re: Schedule
« on: September 27, 2007, 01:52 AM »
that's taking longer than i thought because i've got a few other projects i'm juggling at the same time.

don't worry mouser, it's always taking longer than we think...  ;)

But :
  • i miss the frequent releases (not one since august 19 ... :()
  • hawleyj has a good point, you should really really change that webpage stating :
    Public Release Will Happen in
    JULY AUGUST 2007
    as well as the beginning of the FARR2 thread, i think...

Nitrix

PS:
@hawleyj, you should try FARR, this is one of the best piece of software there is :Thmbsup:
it is NO vaporware

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR v2 PLUGIN CREATOR INFO THREAD
« on: September 26, 2007, 11:54 AM »
 :D i was afraid you had me filtered out !

nitrix your idea is not a bad one at all, especially in the case of using the dosearch command.  in fact it would be pretty easy to add support for this with the dosearch command, which is a good idea and i should probably do anyway.

however it's not an ideal situation for when you want users to be able to manually specify modifiers, and some aliases may want to handle them differently than others.

it is true that when using dosearch, nobody will really care about the length of what you type... which is a different story when using the search box directly...
i suggested not so long ago a second box next to the search box which would be the parameters box

using "dosearch" FARR parameters (+action, \STAYOPEN, etc.) would be clearly identified
and when using FARR search box, you would just tab (if tab autocomplete is unchecked) to go to the FARR parameters box ... (or click into the box) no need for "+" or anything else
one could imagine that there would be some kind of autocompletion like gmail (no need to remember the name of the modifiers... and much faster)

one other suggestion i already did was to better identify "folder modifier" from "action modifier", this is because it's pretty easy to run into problems...
for example if you give the same name to an action and an alias
or if you give the same name to an action and to a folder modifier...

i know that "+" is short and nice (though i do not like it... it is not direct on a laptop), but there are maybe other alternatives...

Keep up the good work, i guess there are just too much those days ;)
Cheers, Nitrix

PS: oups, i forgot, it would be really really nice if one non-programmer like me could access as much information as possible to use it in a autohotkey script...
would it be hard to put informations into a standard window edit box, all those information presented one after another ??

searchbox = my search
resultlist = result1,result2,result3
statusbox = statusbox  text
lastactivewindow = ...
etc.

as an example, i would love to have those information to be able to build a preview window for many of my aliases and in particular for my code snippet alias
you search for code snippet, autohotkey is triggered by the search box content (in my example : s keyword)
you select a result, autohotkey loads the content of the file... into a nice semi-transparent window... awesome  ;D

dosearch locate –p d:\music –ld $$1 +open_winamp

this is really hard to distinguish plugin parameters from FARR parameters...
this is also true for any other use of the dosearch command... application, alias, url

i feel that those parameters should be better separated maybe directly into the dosearch command :
dosearch locate –p d:\music –ld $$1 [FARR]+open_winamp[/FARR]
or
music search | dosearch locate –p d:\music –ld $$1 | +open_winamp

just my 2 cents :D

« on: September 23, 2007, 01:23 PM »
Mouser, do you think that one day it will be possible to combine this plugin (or others) with (POWERFUL) dosearch commands and action keyword modifiers ?

it would be quite amazing, somehow we would be able to "specify" within an alias if we want to use an INDEX or not ! which is some kind of Graal, isn't it ?

  • find a music album on a network (or not ;)) drive instantly... and enqueue it in your favorite music player
  • search among thousands of files using powerful locate options
  • ...

i SO really hope it will be possible one day !!!

Keep up the good work  :Thmbsup:

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Locate32 Plugin for FARR by Okke
« on: September 23, 2007, 09:30 AM »
@mouser
is there a way to use Okke's plugin to update "my music dosearch alias" :
Music album search $$1 | dosearch -alias +folder_music +open_winamp +\ $$1

the real issue i guess is the action keyword +open_winamp....

it would be really really powerful to combine this plugins with dosearch commands AND with action keyword, is it possible ?

Cheers, Nitrix

i just had a FARR exception error when specifying the locate.exe folder, after a FARR restart it seems to work very nicely  :Thmbsup:

i think i will have to get to know locate a bit more now that you've released this plugin

Thanks again  :D !

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you launch stuff?
« on: September 19, 2007, 02:17 PM »
FARR and autohotkey
because it is much much faster than anything else  :D

394
that's a very good idea and it would be much useful
and i believe people would create quite interesting stuff

the really cool idea is to use a regex pattern to parse the files  :Thmbsup:

Text pattern to show in text box when a result is selected, e.g. $$2 (again from above).
or the ability to copy the text pattern to the clipboard
or even better to specify a file which will take care of the result : copytoclipboard.exe $$2

Cheers, Nitrix

thanks for you answer very interesting ;)

a bookmarklet is a javascript function which is within a bookmark, for example the one below will validates HTML using the W3C HTML validator :

javascript:(function(){ function fixFileUrl(u) { var windows,u; windows = (navigator.platform.indexOf("Win") != -1);  /* chop off file:///, unescape each %hh, convert / to \ and | to : */  u = u.substr(windows ? 8 : 7); u = unescape(u); if(windows) { u = u.replace(/\//g,"\\"); u = u.replace(/\|/g,":"); } return u; } /* bookmarklet body */ var loc,fileloc; loc = document.location.href; if (loc.length > 9 && loc.substr(0,8)=="file:///") { fileloc = fixFileUrl(loc); if (prompt("Copy filename to clipboard, press enter, paste into validator form", fileloc) != null) { document.location.href = "http://validator.w3.org/file-upload.html" } } else document.location.href = "http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=" + escape(document.location.href); void(0); })();

it is stored as a bookmark/favorite in your browser, and i always wondered if one could launch a bookmarklet from FARR

397
@jzippo
would you mind showing us your javascript file ?
it seems interesting !
i did not know about the cscript.exe trick...

do you think it would be possible to launch bookmarklet using this ?

Cheers, Nitrix

Find And Run Robot / Re: Public release in august ?
« on: September 05, 2007, 12:41 PM »
Seriously, I don't care. The alpha I'm using now is pretty darn good. No bugs that I see. So, calling it "public" won't mean much to me.

this is very true, but i think that the public release will push FARR forward
which means more plugins, more alias sharing, etc.

Keep up the good work mouser !  :Thmbsup:
