General Software Discussion / The best Media manager?
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:08 PM »
Hi

I am looking for a media manager application that would let me watch, listen catalog etc. I am not looking for a media catalog, dvd librry kind of thing. WHat I am looking for is an app that can play all kinds of media formats, organize stuff based on folders, format, etc. It would be nice to have conversion skills. It should be  multi platform as well.

In the past I have tried Jriver, which was nice but it does not support Linux.

On the other hand I tried some of the media box kind of stuff, while they look nice I did not like certain functions like auto album cover downloading. It is mind boggling to me to see that such features are hard coded. I looked into disabling some of those features in their forums without much luck. They download album, dvd covers automatically. Why on earth this is an ubiquitous feature that should be hard coded is beyond me really.

Anyways I would appreciate some solid suggestions.

Living Room / Best trackball?
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:16 PM »
Hi

I am thinking to buy a new trackball. At the moment I mainly use my Wacom pad, Logitech G9(good mouse), n52 Gamepad and Logitech marble trackball, but I need a convenience trackball for my left hand when it is not on the keyboard. The L marble trackball is fine for general work but I need something better. I am looking for non wireless devices(sick of changing batteries)

I read couple good reviews about this laser one for example. It is little pricey but if it is good I am sure I can get some juice out of it. Also my wrist is more important than the price of the trackball in the long run :) Plus it will be an office investment.

Do you use any other trackball that can be the pinnacle of trackball design?

Hi

'C:\Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.'

I need some serious insight into this problem since this thing started taking a toll on my system.  I am using Windows 7. Couple months ago I have started getting this message. This message shows up anytime I open a command shell(cmd.exe), or any program that relies on windows shell like Python, some installers etc etc. Sometimes because of this error some apps refuse to work or refuse to install as well. I have been searching for a solution for couple weeks and I cannot find any solution.

Does anyone have any insight about why this might be happening?

thanks

Living Room / A programmer`s appeal for donation (not me :))
« on: January 16, 2010, 10:38 AM »
Hi

I just saw his blog entry yesterday. I do not know the guy and has no affiliation with him. I have used his image viewer some time ago and it was nice and snappy. It sounds like he needs some support from his users. I know the economy is really bad nowadays, and everyone is affected by it to certain degree including myself. So these times are not so great for donating but I thought I should make a post about it anyways. I have not donated myself yet but I wil do later today.

Here is the app

Living Room / Nch Software
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:58 PM »
You know they have some good free software, but their consistent sneaky practices do not make their intention of letting people use their free apps any better. Here is a my quote from another topic.

"I so hate those guys and their practices so much. They are so sneaky. When you install one app they install all those shortcuts. I am also feeling like they are snooping on people`s Thunderbird or Outlook email accounts. I cannot be sure but I have seen couple situations where I felt like how the hell they got my email adress. Me never puts any of my real email adress, not even on  legitimate purchases."

If you know what they are up to, or have some good examples of bad behaviours from them please write it down here so that people know who they are dealing with.

Hi

Does anyone know of any tool that would let me wake up a standby computer on the lan? I changed the bios and network card settings under windows. I tried various modes and none seemed to work. Either computer goes in to standby and comes back in 10 seconds or never wakes up

thanks

Some people just think that people like me  are just causing nonsense buzz here and there. I just want to remind you that some of you people give enormous power and wealth to some of those dishonest companies (by just surfing the web without protection:) for example GOOGLE. I know most people just like GOOOGLE, just cannot goto bed without GOOOGLE because GOOOGLE gives them couple bux every month via adsense or let them track updates about their name or company name searches. Well, this is a story just out of the FAUST story.

In the past we had booogie man to scare kids, well I use GOOOOGIEE man to scare my kid now. try it, it works.

Hi

I am looking for an explorer replacement tool that comes with embedded console. I realize that I use console command line quite a bit and I do not like end up having massive amounts of console windows around. So maybe having one explorer replacement with console window might help me little bit. I am actually hoping that I can also use Cygwin bash console with it as well.

I am aware of the massive explorer replacement thread which I have been following but I do not remember if any of them offered real embedded console. I know couple had some implementation but they seem to capture the console output and redirect it that did not work that great at all times like Ultraexplorer. it is a nice one but the latest version has performance issues.

General Software Discussion / Help! ssh setup
« on: July 04, 2009, 08:08 PM »
Hi

I managed to install SSH on most of my computers using Cygwin and Copssh. For some reason one of my laptops did not like Cygwin and SSH just did not work on it so I ended up installing Copssh which seem to work now. Now everything works fine within my network but I have couple things I need to figure out. Hopefully there are couple experienced users here.

1- I have forwarded port 22 in my firewall to my laptop so that I can access over the internet. I have not tried it outside but hopefully it would work. My question is that I also would like to access my dekstop using  ssh from the outside world. But the thing is that I do not want to enable another port in my firewall for my desktop(tried did not work anyways) to my desktop because I have all kinds of important stuff on it. So here is what I want to do and I do not know how to do it. I want to be able to connect to my laptop from outside and somehow enable some of the drives(on my desktop) that are not shared and enable some form of access temporarily and disable  when I do not need them. At the moment I have shared drives(on my desktop) and I can access them once I logged into ssh account via "cd  //server name/share". The thing is that I also have some drives that I do not even share inside my network. And those are the ones I want to be able to access from outside.

2- Regarding the issue above, is it possible to switch port forwarding on my router(linksys) via ssh? I know it sounds silly but since I have ddwrt on it I thought maybe it is possible to connect to it via command line. I will investigate this one later but for now it is easier for me to ask here.

3-I am also trying to understand this public key private key thingies. I read couple pages but so far I have not found any simple tutorial. Are they  better than using passwords? If so how can I setup? Does anyone know any simple tutorial for putty-cygwin(client server)

4- I also want to be able to use git or bazaar over ssh. These parts of their documentation is little vague. They all assume some implicit understanding of how those systems work. I have used tortoise in the past but on mylocal systed. I know the basics of checkin checkout but have not really figured out how I can check out, update via sftp. It seems possible but not well covered I think

5-I need to figure out connecting to xserver thing. I can start xserver but never tried it connecting from outside. If anyone knows any simple tutorial that would be great.

Sorry for so many questions but I am exhausted for 2 days due to trying to get this ssh stuff work properly. It is easy if you are lucky(no problems within your system) but 2 of my machines gave me major headache and I ended up reinstalling Cygwin so many times. On one machine it took only 5 min on another over half a day. Go figure. I have no idea why that would be the case really.

thanks

Hi mouser

It looks like this particular right click menu item is not available for Farr history items that is listed when no search word is present. Is it possible ot have this particular right click function for history items too?

Screenshot Captor / Creating folders
« on: June 25, 2009, 03:35 PM »
Hi

I normally use Minicap but I want to move to SC. Is it possible to move(automatically) the captured images to respective folders based on app name and date? I can do that with Minicap. I just did not see a topic in the help file regarding this issue.

DC Member Programs and Projects / Remove folder
« on: June 16, 2009, 02:17 AM »
Hi

This tiny Python script utility is using Gnu rm.exe to forcefully and peacefully removes folders. I think it works better than windows delete. It will popup a window where you put the path to intended delete folder. For now it does only one folder(recursively) at a time. I made this utility because I was sick of waiting for Window`s delete to figure out what to delete.

http://shup.com/Shup/173115/FolderRemove.zip

Use it on your own risk. I use it here happily :)

I just want to be able to select some text and see them in my favorite editor. There are tools to see the source code of selected text and even there are addons that would let you edit text entry area in an external editor. These are not what I am looking for. What I am looking for is an addon that would let me see the selected text in an external editor pretty much just for reading purposes, just simple text.

I probably will write a simple Python or Ahk hack if I cannot find one.

General Software Discussion / Free Pdf server?
« on: June 14, 2009, 11:23 AM »
Hi

I need a simple free pdf server to print stuff from my xp64. I was using pdfcreator in the past but because of the author`s sneaky embedding of toolsbars, I have stopped using it. Are there any other alternatives out there? Basically what I need is pdf printer that can print to another real printer after saving it as pdf. No online related solutions please.

thanks

General Software Discussion / looking for a simple firewall app
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:46 PM »
I have tried many firewall software paid and free. Most of them are humongous system resource eaters. I hate them. Some of them offer very little.

Here is what I want

-Small
-It will show me which programs are active, which ports are being used. It will let me restrict access to ports and resources.
-It would let me specify which ip adress should do what(ie controlling internet sharing)
-It needs to be small
-I do not want security suits, just firewall
-I do not want obsessive hidden firewall behaviour that would drive me nuts here(ie Zonealarm)

thanks

I already used Powerfolder which is nice but I need to use this on 6 7 computers and I do not have budget for powerfolder licences right now.

General Software Discussion / Alt-tab replacement ?
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:02 PM »
Hi

I am looking for a new alt+tab replacement(under xp64). I use taskswitchxp, which is fine. Actually it is one of the best but for some reason sometimes it does not trigger properly and I endup pressing alt+tab many zillion times to invoke. Anyways I am not happy with that particular behaviour.

I have also  tried many others like alttab++,alttab thingy etc and yet I have not found anything that satisfies my needs. Alttab thingy looked nice but it is quite buggy, rezising does not work, v4 had preview problems. I know it is free stuff but as long as it does not work properly being free is kind of irrelevant.

Alttab++ is nice and simple but it does not have any sorting based on name, application.

I use Farr Alt+tab plugin but again this one does not have any sorting either. I know I can type the name but I do not want to type a name when I just need to see what apps are open, or when I need to quickly browse to another app. Farr Alttab is great for if you are into typing and know which app you need to browse to.

What I am looking for

-The listing should include window name, and app name
-Different listing options(icon, list, grid etc)
-Preview would be nice
-Sticky Alttab mode
-Sorting based on different criteria (date, window name, app name, size etc)

Find And Run Robot / Farr worst case scenario
« on: May 18, 2009, 05:01 PM »
Hi

Farr is the best app out there but it hits a worst case scenario in sorting which is if the user wants to find an application that is under "\Zfolder\Zappname.eze" where Z is the first letters of the app the user tries to find.

I was wondering if there is a way to force Farr to do random pattern-reverse pattern etc access rather than standard alphabetical order?

45
mouser,

how hard it would be read paths from EV so that we can run globally defined commands via Farr? For example I am using Gnu Grep(and it is defined in Env V)  now it would be very tight if I could run Grep via Farr without creating aliases and it would be in sync with Env V all the time when we have it that way.

Basically Env V would be one of the search paths for Farr.

46
I cannot seem to get colored output from Gnu Grep. I tried the color option maybe standard ms console does not support such thing. Does anyone know a solution?

Find And Run Robot / Farr strecthed idea, send key strokes
« on: May 14, 2009, 11:53 PM »
I have been thinking about this for a while. It might be interesting if Farr could send key strokes-combinations to focused application. We could use it as a like shorthand macro tool, for small tasks for apps that support wide range of shortcuts.

Find And Run Robot / Pydoc and getting results in Farr
« on: May 14, 2009, 09:39 PM »
Hi

I want to use Farr to query python document. There is a module for it and it would print out to console. I know there were some works regarding getting console output. Is it something doable at the moment with latest release?

General Software Discussion / What the hell is OpenCandy?
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:22 PM »
I just have started seeing this stuff in installers. I know what they are up to personally. If you read their site they claim not to be adware spyware but snooping on people`s choices is a form of attack on privacy in my book.

What do you think?

Since Google is not your friend here is the link to OpenCandy
