General Software Discussion / Memory Address Space
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:08 PM »
Is anyone aware of any software that graphically displays memory address space and where the physical memory is being used?
It would sure be easier to understand why you can't stuff 4GB physical memory into the 32 bit system address space if it was displayed in a graph and it would bloody well be a blast if you could watch the graph and make the memory dance by using or releasing some of it!
If there isn't anything like that around I'd be ashamed of myself if I were a programmer? Luckily I'm not!
It , of course, would be easier to explain it that way too. That's really why I'm looking.

Here's the link for Gabe Topala's feed. I'm using it in Abilon and it displays the html code only. A real mess from my view.
Can somebody check it in another reader to see if the feed is bad or my reader is?

Do I need monster HDMI cables?
No, HDMI monster cables are simply a monster rip-off.  If a cable is HDMI certified, it will by definition offer you a perfect digital signal.  Despite the fact that the electrical signals traversing an HDMI cable degrade as a cable gets longer, it will still offer perfect digital transmission so long as the signal loss or distortion is within a certain tolerance.  Analog cables might benefit from extra thickness and insulation because there’s not much you can do to fix analog signal loss or distortion other than to amplify and maybe filter the signal a little to mitigate the bad side effects.  But when it comes to digital technology, the signal is either all there or it isn’t.  There is zero measurable difference in the digital signal quality between the $6 HDMI cable and the $60 monster HDMI cable.

Caveat Emptor!

General Software Discussion / MyUninstaller
« on: February 21, 2008, 02:58 PM »
"MyUninstaller is an alternative utility to the standard Add/Remove applet of Windows operating system. It displays the list of all installed application, and allows you to uninstall an application, delete an uninstall entry, and save the list of all installed applications into a text file or HTML file.

MyUninstaller also provides additional information for most installed applications that the standard Add/Remove applet doesn't display: product name, company, version, uninstall string, installation folder and more."

Anybody have any experience with this?

General Software Discussion / Context Menu addon
« on: February 20, 2008, 05:58 PM »
Customize your Windows right-click menu
Who doesn't love to right-click, especially when browsing the Web? Whether saving images we like to our local drives, copying HTML links to send to friends, or scanning downloaded files for viruses, the right-click has become an essential part of most users' computing lives.

Yet how many times have you right-clicked on a file in Windows and then painfully scoured a long list to find the only option you need; sometimes it's the only one you ever use. Wouldn't life be much simpler to have only the items you want in your right-click menu? Well, for Windows Explorer, it's mostly possible, and the free utility FileMenu Tools makes it rather simple.

General Software Discussion / Expert Help
« on: February 13, 2008, 01:39 PM »
I need an expert from out of town. Hell, maybe from out of the country?

"As of 2007 onwards, Samsung Semiconductors is expected to use its proprietary “Through Silicon Via” (TSV) with an all-DRAM stacking configuration – "................

The above line is from the website Memory Secrets.
I've downloaded the site and trying to edit out all extraneous script, etc., so I can compile it into a .chm file. That site is in the UK and I can't figure out how to clean up the formatting when I edit and save in Notepad ++.
There are several options for different formats such as Windows Format, Unix Format, UTF-8 with BOM, and more, but I still wind up with Greek in a saved file. Quotation marks and apostrophes seem to be the biggest offenders.
Am I making any sense and can anybody help? I'm too old to cry!

There's a passel of powerful memory information available at this site. The article is now up to four parts and every one is a keeper.
There is a list of Related Info links at the bottom of each page for those with a lust for this stuff!   8)

Foreword
by Richard Swinburne
Ryan Leng is an independent technology consultant and auditor for corporations in computer systems involving hardware, software, networking, security, IT policy formulation and training.

Originally trained in Computer Science and Economics, he has since worked in many fields relating to computer hardware integration, software design and engineering, surveillance systems, advertising, multimedia production, user-Interface engineering and graphic designs.

Ryan approached bit-tech with his unpublished book on DDR technology a short while ago, and when we read it we were greatly impressed with the depth and attention to detail, as well as being able to convey complex ideas in an easy to understand manner.

Whether you are adept in the knowledge of memory technology, it’s still an interesting read for a fundamental part of a PC architecture. We’ve cut his work up into several parts, the first of which we’ve published here covers the basics. The information published here is merely an excerpt of a much larger document.

General Software Discussion / Janino another new toy?
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:24 PM »
http://downloads.zdn...372&promo=100500

Overview: Janino is not intended to be a development tool, but an embedded compiler for run-time compilation purposes, such as expression evaluators or "server pages" engines like JSP. The major design goal was to keep the compiler small and simple, while partially sacrificing completeness. Nobody likes the idea of carrying around huge libraries for simple applications. See Parser for the list of implemented and missing language features. This software is a useful compiler which reads a Java expression, block, or source file, and generates Java byte code that is loaded and executed directly. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

General Software Discussion / PEEK
« on: December 28, 2007, 12:03 AM »
Another oldie but goodie that won't work in XPPro64. It installs in the registry but I get no entry in the Context Menu.

http://www.nettally....eeware/fileutil.html

12-09-96 PEEK Version 1.1 for Windows95 and WindowsNT 4.0 Contextmenu Extension providing simple text extraction for any file. PEEK is a Shell contextmenu extension which allows you to extract only the text portion of files.

I started to post a copy of PEEK.INF that I copied out of Notepad but it seemed rather large.
If anyone is interested I can post it and there is also a peek.dll and a readme. The zip is available from the above link as peek11.zip.

There are many other oldies there too. COA32 is on the list and 10 years ago that was a "must have" app.
Peek is one that NOD could probably fix easily but he patched up Filenoter, left to check on snow for Christmas, and hasn't been heard from since. Have there been any avalanches in Sweden lately. Or maybe he tangles with some of that Swedish Holiday Cheer and hasn't recovered yet?
They make some stuff over there that looks like rain, tastes like carbolic acid, and hits like lightning. Damn, but is it ever good!!

Found Deals and Discounts / Nero 6
« on: December 26, 2007, 09:24 AM »
http://tinyurl.com/m8fvb

SurplusComputers is having a year end clearance sale and they have two different suites of Burning Rom on sale.
I have both suites don't really recall what either contains. Both contain the basics for burning CDs/DVDs and what is not on the disks can be downloaded from Nero.com in the Nero 6 section. You can upgrade ver. 6 to do anything that most of us would ever need for free.
I have used Nero from day one and this sale is one of the best deals I've ever run across. I bought mine for $2.99/$3.99 with free shipping. This sale is for $.99 and $.49.......... I didn't check on shipping cost?
I've purchased from SurplusComputers for years (they are 60 miles down the pike) but in the last year or so their customer sevice has disappeared. I wouldn't buy anything from them that might require an RMA because you might never get an RMA. YMMV.
Buy two......... they're small.

General Software Discussion / New Game
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:37 PM »
I found a new game awhile back.......... freebie........... small.................. neat
and driving me apes___!

http://www.download....2111_4-10778461.html

Common sense, basic math and simple logic tell you that 47 out of 48 can be removed. My tops is 42, ONCE, and more usually 37 or 38. Playing the game may cause to me lose another marble and I'm not sure I can afford to lose even one more.
Maybe a cheat sheet???

General Software Discussion / Monitor Rotation
« on: December 20, 2007, 01:05 PM »
This looks like a good idea for certain applications.
Has anyone ever played around with it (other than as a prank)?

http://www.entechtai...om/util/irotate.shtm

I was given a small, 13" TV set many years ago and I use to turn that on it's side to prevent getting a stiff neck while watching it in bed.

I was thinking of bed patients. Rotating the screen, depending on their position in bed, might provide some comfort to people in that situation.

The same would be true with TV, such as in the military hospitals, but that would require rotating the entire TV set.
Food for thought, though!

This has been around awhile but if you haven't run across it before, you have now!
And you need it, especially since it's a Freebie.
I prefer Metapad to Notepad as a source editor for HTML in IE7 and this does the changing easily, and as often as you want. Use any editor you want. ......and did I mention it's Free?

What we need now is a similar app to change the default "Save as" from mht to html!
