Looking good !  a very helpful video.

The author of Power Favorites (MarkStone) is visiting this forum now and then and is very responsive. Perhaps you can ask him?
http://www.desksware...bookmark-manager.htm

Out of curiosity, does anybody know of a good standalone bookmark manager? Preferably a portable app that could also export its list as a tab-delimited or CSV file rather than a html page?

humyo.com was the fastest that I have tried (compared to dropbox and spideroak; these are more luxurious howerver).

General Software Discussion / Re: which Linux version for my laptop
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:43 PM »
Well, I do not expect too much support for a free product.  ;)
Mandriva has great forums (certainly other distros too). The positive aspects from my Mandriva experiences were:
- everything just worked with my two-year old inspiron notebook (no drivers to search); there were even NO niggles like unability to to turn the sound up louder or the need to adjust the screen brightness at every startup (which I experienced with the other distros on my hardware).
- the guys on the Mandriva forums are capable and willing to communicate in a not-so-geeky way.
Obviously I am not a power user;so I do not know what I could be missing  (the Mandriva out-of-the-box look is somehow not the freshest).
- Fonts are easy to install (w/o command line involvement)

sorry : poor wording on my part -- also it's probably less true today (than 3-4 years ago). What I wanted to convey (maybe wrongly) is that free support for Mandriva free/one is (IMO) not as good as the support for Ubuntu and that one might have to pay for the special packs for extra support and software. But what's your opinion on the matter ?

.... and others love Mandriva (beware though : might cost you more in the long run!)
Why would that be?

I just came across Zotero; it is also OS and seems to combine web-research (FF-addon) and bibliography creation (with addons for word and OpenOffice).

Mandriva Linux One 2008/1 gave me the least hassles and troubles on my Dell Inspiron notebook that I am running as dual-boot with win XP ( I did also try Mint, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Mepis, Suse, PC Linux OS).   Apparently Mandriva 2009 was just released - I have not tired the newest version yet.

This service looks interesting; up to 25 GB free storage; I believe it has not been mentioned on DC so far:

http://humyo.com/

It won the comparison test of the german CHIP magazine:
http://www.chip.de/a...latten_32846847.html
Disadvantages are: no Linux client, data transfer encryption is only available in the paid version.

AFAIK, Donn Edwards has still the best and most comprehensive Defragger infos on his sites:

The ribbon in Office 2007 su#@*, ahemm.

Unfortunately the menu  items (ribbon items) are organized differently but not more logically than before.
In my experience it requires actually more clicks with the ribbon interface to arrive at the stuff that I need.

Photoshop is no doubt powerful - but it is an ergonomic disaster. In this aspect PSP, Photoline, lots of others have many advantages.
This no problem in PS once you have accepted photoshops learning curve and have memorized lots and lots of keyboard shortcuts.

In my eyes, once one has understood the principles of a layer-based image editor and how to do the basics for example in PSP, it is not a problem to reproduce photoshop tutorials in PSP, Photoline, etc.  - lots of procedures are quite bit easier there actually.  This applies to a majority of tutorials, of course not to the one dealing with exclusive PS features which tend to be more esoteric.

J-Mac - I have used both PSP (up to v. 9, I had v. 10 but unistalled it almost instantly) and PhotoShop and I really don't think the learning curve between the two apps is that much different.

The great advantage of Photoshop (apart from being a fantastic app) is the huge number of free tutorials on the internet, loads of sites dedicated to Photoshop, thousands of books on the subject and courses galore. It is expensive but you can get it cheaply by registering as student at a recognised institution (it doesn't have to be long term or full time - just an evening class will do at a recognised college - find a photoshop class!. Do check the local conditions at adobe.com by going to the academic shop for your country) and then buy the academic edition which is identical to the commercial product.

The advertisement style certainly makes it look like a scam.
However it was reviewed positively several times.

My problem is that seems to require running a PC all day and night ?  (wasting tons of energy).
It is possible to plug something similar into the network directly?

Studioline Photo is very good and comparatively easy to learn:

Sign up for the newsletter.  It has about 40% discounts every few months.

The free Studioline version is already very capable, too  (Photo Basic).

Could you point out where the overview excels? I'm not disagreeing with you but I just can't see it. ......

Please have a look at the comparison screenshot (click on the thumbnail). On a much thinner slice of my screen (room for expansion?) I immediately get an overview over twice as many threads and immediately recognize which threads I have visited before, which posts have not been answered - all I need to know, while enjoying a much cleaner interface.
One advantage is that I do not have to stare at all the useless boxes and frames that are meant to seperate the posts but are superfluous optical ballast (OK, the frames are actually still there on the dpreview site. But they are so low key that they do not have any optical impact).
In my eyes bulletin boards scripts have plenty of room for improvements, less so in features, but predominantly in "humane" design.
The clutter usually seems to contradict all web design recommendations???

There are hundreds of photography forums on the web using the standard bulletin boards scripts - dpreview with its propietary script is the by far most frequented one (no hard data - this an estimate based on links to photography boards I come across) . Could be just by accident, but I do not think so.  Photography audiences and Coder audiences have vastly different geek factors obviously - my discussion was meant in regard to forums for a wider audience.

Nothing fancy:

a simple, elegant and space-saving design. In contrast to the standard boxy approach which is overloaded with features. Nothing against all the features and new features, but they have to be designed , hidden, properly to make them tolerable to the eye.

The by far best design in this regard is still the one from dpreview and this is 5 years old or even older.
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/

No offense Lutz_ but that made my eyes hurt but dark backgrounds are just a no no for me.

Well, the color would be easy enough to change, although it is really not a problem.
The dpreview board is the most visited photography site on the web - I believe the elegance of their forum script, and the quick overview it allows over the entire thread, is the biggest reason for this success. The other site content is absolute average.
The overview over the forum is so good that it does not need most of the features that clutter other systems.

The only positive aspect of this "release" could be that they might be working on a complete overhaul of the program (which is certainly necessary : 16- bit  imaging,  multi-core compatible, 64-bit OS compatibility) that needs considerably longer than the usual release cycle. ???
Alas, it is Corel, and the only thing certain about Corel is a moronic management. I do not have too many hopes.

A simple tool with a framing option in the "batch conversion" tab  and with very nice collage options on it's "page" tab is Photoscape.
Donationware.

Hello Brett;
good to see a review of this great program!!!  I very much agree with your observations.
(I actually was thinking of writing a review myself.....).
At one point in your review it seems to erroneously mention the "other" program, Helicon "Focus" instead of Filter.

Personally, I do not believe the free version has too much value (too restricted) - the home and Pro versions on the other hand are pretty ingenious.
The Pro version can also be called as a plug-in from other programs like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoLine, etc.
