Son-of-a-bitch! I actually did look around to see if there was anything out there, but didn't really find much.

Timns Apps / March Fundraiser Pledge: teaser
« on: February 16, 2011, 05:10 PM »
Dunno what the standard is for a pledge, but I can always clean it up later.

And, by the way, I sure hope there's nothing like this out there already!

If there is, tell me now before I carry on  :'(

So here is my Pledge for the March 2011 fundraiser. An app that allows you to browse the DoCo forums outside of the usual browser interface. I expect, but have not checked, that it will also work for other SMF forums too.

This is a Java application with a little database that allows you to interact with the forums in a more natural manner. The program will automatically group messages by thread, and show you what's new in the forums by updating itself on a regular basis.

So reading and replying to messages now becomes more like using your email.

You can also filter messages in or out by various criteria, such as (but not limited to) by date, username, tag etc. allowing you to focus on the stuff that interests you. Or even ignore entire threads if they are no longer of interest.

I think the screenshots will tell a better story:

It's usable already, but there's a lot missing at this stage. I'll post more details as things come along. Now's also the time to hit me with questions and ideas.

Hello timns,

Often when I insert a keyword in whatever program it is not replaced.
To make it work again, I have to open auspex click on whatever keyword and close the software again to the system tray.

I am not aware of anything that would stop Auspex from replacing the word. Except if you do a lot of typing and deleting inside one word, the program will not be able to match the word any more.

I noted also that auspex is slower replacing keywords as texter.
(I checked texter/auspex with various keywords in same software)

Auspex types every character one at a time. Maybe texter works in a different way: no idea. Are you saying it's not fast enough?

There are also a few errors in auspex p.e.
\\fl --> myfirstname lastname
is replaced in myf irstname lastname

Never seen that problem. Maybe check your replacement to make sure it has 'erase trigger' checked?

Otherwise, if you don't mind, I'd like to get an example from you. Create a backup for me perhaps?

405
Tim, maybe you could donate a signed hand drawn sketch from your Head in the Clouds cartoon?

Oh I knew I'd forgotten something! So pledged.

Any of the strips from 2010, donors' choices. Please be warned they're as rough as anything  :-[

Or I will try and create a kustom strip.

406
Paul, please keep these mini articles coming!

I 100% agree that our minds work differently when creating software. Well, mine sure does.

407
...which I could step up for unless anyone else fancies doing it. Let's try and co-ordinate this stuff in case several people give it a go...

408
It looks like at first glance that that tool will require some serious configuration to convert an xml file to a nice output.

Sure would be nice to have something automated that maybe could read an xml file and make some reasonable assumptions in order to generate a nice looking layout.. or maybe use a kind of gui tool to let you configure the arrangements of fields for pretty printing..

Sounds like a pledge opportunity!

409
There are some freeware XML editors out there. One such is XML Edit Pro

Probably the easiest way to get some basic cleanup would be a large and clever search-and-replace job to clean out the tags.

Alternatively I'd offer to do this for you, but since it's PM's, I'd probably have to work blindfolded for the sake of your privacy ;)

410
It may be a UAC problem - I have it running here on W7 x64 with no problem.

Can you give me any more details please?

For coding snack (small program) pledges: 11 down, 20 to go.
For mini-reviews: 1 down and 30 to go.

As for dates -- I think we will have to have deadline dates, and everyone should expect their first deadline will be the first week of march.  If we are going to be releasing one per day and keeping to a strict schedule, there is little room for error.

In my case: yes for the review, but no for the app. Second week or greater please old chap. I've only just started working on it, and it'll be a full standalone program (albeit one that doesn't do much)  :-[

412
Pledge: to release a new DC app sometime in March

Pledge: to do a review of a previously un-reviewed piece of software, again sometime in March

Pledge: (if we adopt it) to take up Stoic Joker's suggestion of getting the donations moving around!

Do we get dates assigned?

413
In fact, I'd also be adding a 'request for pledge' too. Can we make something happen? I know it's going to require someone to moderate. I guess I could step up, clueless tho I may be  :-[

414
I think a pledge would be a fairly solid commitment to do something tangible for the event. Otherwise the thread just fills up with wibble.

e.g.

"I pledge to shave my head if donations hit $x"
"I pledge to release a new app"
"I pledge to release a mini-review"

etc.

2. I would like to use the same layout for my apps page also, if you're ok with that?

Sure, it's just a standard table.  Want me to PM you a sample?

Yes please buster :)

416
What about a special event for the fundraiser called "Stump the Cranioscopical".

For a 6 hour period, donors are invited to challenge Chris to come up with puns on demand to random concepts. If he fails you get your money back, if he succeeds you have to double your donation ;D

I'd pay to put Cranio on the spot. (I mean this in a nice, fun way)  :D

Can we have a pledge wall somewhere?

417
I shall post so many: pledgehog

418
Is there somewhere that we can start pledging?

"How to get the most from DC?"

420
Totally +1 to Stoic Joker there.

Absolutely marvellous for 2 reasons:

1. I have seen several new (to me) thingies that I'd like to try out

2. I would like to use the same layout for my apps page also, if you're ok with that?

Doesn't have to be top 10...

Top 5, or Of the week / Month

Top rated, Top voted... that feels more interactive too.

What would be nice is that more of DC's content gets an airing - I think that's important.

423
Would be a bit of a "labou?r" of love  - but then again, probably picking the 100 most commonly misspelled words would be 90% of it.

424
There is - I have one here, which could be very easily imported.

I think the thing that would set us apart would be to encompass ALL the common misspellings..

i.e. not just tomorow corrected to tomorrow, but also tommorow and tommorrow

This is easily done using regex:
to{1,2}mor{1,2}ow -> tomorrow
Corrects: tomorow, tommorow, tommorrow -> tomorrow

And the more I look at the word "tomorrow" the stranger it looks...

A while back, we (my company) attended charity auction. Our bid won one of the services on offer: the designer offered 10 hours of design work in exchange for our donation.

If anyone here has services that they are willing to offer in return for a decent contribution to the DC fund, that might appeal.
