That. Was. AWESOME~! :D

You can probably play it, right?

Doesn't feel like much of an 'event'
It's more like: Let's do what we always do but even more so this month, to show people how useful and interesting the site is.  And in doing so we will get more donations from people who want to support the site.

That doesn't feel like much of an 'event' to me. Not like NANY then? My apologies, but I'm not getting where the buzz will come from. Don't we want to really incentivize (if that's a word) donors?

Timns Apps / Re: Auspex
« on: February 21, 2011, 04:09 PM »
Hi Hank. Auspex does only two things, really.

1. It will look out for a certain pattern of characters, and when it sees them, it will automatically remove that pattern, and replace it with something else. For instance, when I type "rt" Auspex sees this and replaces it with "Regards, Tim" to save me time when composing emails.

This is called a Replacement in the GUI.

2. As you use the program more and more, Auspex will learn which words and phrases you use frequently, and begin to suggest them as you type. When you see the little window pop-up, you have a choice:

a) Press 'tab' and the currently highlighted word will be typed for you
b) If there's more than one word showing, use the up/down cursor keys to highlight the word you want, and then press 'tab'. As an alternative, use your numeric keypad and press the number that's shown next to the word you want.

If you don't want to use any of the suggested words, 'esc' will close that little pop-up. Or just carry on typing and it will disappear on its own.

We call this thing a Completion.

You can also pre-load Auspex with Completions if you know there are certain words or phrases that you definitely want the program to suggest. Conversely you can also block certain words from appearing at all.

At some point soon we'll have a little user guide, and also maybe some 'how-to' videos.

I wasn't involved in the last one, so I guess I'm talking from a lack of experience... but I didn't expect it to be quite so 'passive' (I mean that in a polite way)

What is the goal?

355
- I assumed it was more like a fundraiser where you got sponsorship or something.
That would be a nice feature, but does the donation credit system support that? Only if a level of sponsorship (set by the pledgee I presume) is reached, the CSnack download will be available/Tim's drawing will be sent/Reviews are fully revealed (all of the pledges I can recall from memory) etc? Possibly showing the amount/percentage still left to be donated. Hm, sounds like I'm chasing mouser to work, dunno if that's allowed :-[

Well, yes. Otherwise what does happen? If everything goes ahead anyway, where's the incentive for anyone to a) step up to pledge and b) put up some dough?

356
But what if everyone was to work their arses off on loads of exciting pledges just to have folks stop by and say "oh, that's nice"

- I assumed it was more like a fundraiser where you got sponsorship or something.

Otherwise I could just say "hey, I pledge to eat 12 mars bars in 30 minutes" but it does jack for DC until someone offers to sponsor the feat.

357
Not much point in pledging then?

Don't know about "stirring."

But all charges were eventually dropped so we considered the show a success.

P.S. That's not the mosh. That's the contrabassoon, fife, and sackbutt players "discussing" who is going to get to take a solo right after the second artillery barrage wraps up.

What's a contrabassoon? As played by the Nicaraguan rebels?

359
Today is my first day using Mark Forster's new Superfocus system. I like it.
I pledge to use it for one month (say 4 weeks) and write (at least) weekly updates on how I'm getting on.
(how does that sound?)

Yes please - and I'll sponsor you $5 to the DC fund per post.

(I assume this is how pledges work?)

Looks like you gave a stirring performance there. The guys in 'der Moschenpitte' are having a blast.

"Does this handkerchief smell like chloroform to you?"
ETHER! ETHER, ETHER, ETHER! And it's my pickup line!

Did you know there's a type of reaction called "Ether Cleavage?"

Ok, I'd like to gather the DC orchestra:

I tried a couple of those and settled on DirectFolders. It's simple, seems to always pop-up when it's supposed to, and has a couple of nice side-tweaks that I like. For instance you can double click a lister in DOpus, and DF switches the currently open dialog to that path.

Living Room / Re: Strange subtleties of the Placebo Effect

I'm skeptical. A Genuine Placebo Aphrodesiac never did a damn thing for me!

It would be hard to see if it's working  :eusa_dance:

366
I wonder if any DC-ers would be interested in putting something together? If it could happen anywhere, I'd like to think it would be on here...

367
Paul, this is great stuff. Thanks for the links - especially that 750 words site.

368
I have checked 'Run when windows starts' and it did not start at win7 x64 startup.

No, I have that disabled at the moment while I'm testing everything else. No reason to not switch it on by now, come to think of it. Look out for the new build later today.

Angry 'cause I've never understood neither RickRoll nor screamers types of jokes. It may be fun once but not whole time and not when you really need a help.

You mean you'd keep phoning it over and over?  ;)

I would imagine it depends on the mood of the caller. Most people would see the funny side surely?

But you're gonna get a couple of angry emails too. You know how worked-up some folks get when their free software isn't perfect  :P

Hm-m-m-m ... has this become a punraiser celebration  :P.

OMG?  Ornate Mental Gymnastics  :P?  Kinda, sorta seems so.  What's the scoring [if any] system  ;)?

The number of decibels in the groan the reader lets out when reading your puns perhaps?

In retrospect, it makes sense. There was a huge Borders near where I lived in Brighton, and also a Waterstones just around the corner. Comparable in size and selection.

One day Borders got a coffee shop... then CD's appeared... then DVD's.

Waterstones carried on selling just books, and is still going strong. Borders is a big empty shell being refurbished into an Urban Beat. Or Barn? Can't remember. Something Urban. Not Keith, I know that much.

General Software Discussion / Re: 3-Day Money Back Guarantee~! WOW~!
« on: February 18, 2011, 01:49 PM »
I guess it depends on the software itself. Say it's just some teensy little app with one use. A few minutes will probably tell you: yes! it's worth keeping. Or you'll probably have vaporized it right away.

Whereas some real hefter of full-blown app may take weeks of solid use to "warm to"

One evaluation we did with a large Scandinavian car manufacturer, it took them 18 months of solid use to make a decision.
