Can't you create one?  (Or at least approximate one.)

Living Room / Getting Started with C#
« on: May 21, 2005, 03:03 PM »
I think I may begin learning C#, especially after mouser's excellent post in this thread.  Now, I'm wondering where to begin.  Yes, I am absolutely green, and I hate that feeling.

Obviously, I need an IDE.  Microsoft has these "Express Editions", but I'm wondering if "Express Edition" means "You'll Need Something Better After Two Months Edition".  Of course, the full-blown "Professional Edition" is a big jump in price.  Is it worth it?

Can someone offer insight into this?

Any other suggestions would be welcome, too.  Book suggestions, anything.  (I know book selection is somewhat personal, but some books are still better than others.)

Why does registry fragmentation matter?  Windows keeps it in memory anyway.  I suppose if it was very, very large, and very, very fragmented (on disk), it might matter on startup, but other than that...?

I know that there are various tools to allow you to create and change XP styles but I'm looking for something simpler I guess.

You want something simpler than:

1.  Right click on Desktop.
2.  Select Properties.
3.  Change theme.
4.  Click OK.

...?

Oh, I think Gmail Drive is cool (except for the built-in 9.99999-MB per-file limitation), I was wondering about removing MSIE.  :)

Another minor issue:

1.  Minimize the window to the tray.
2.  Exit Random Submitter via Exit item in the tray menu.
3.  Run Random Submitter again.
4.  Double click the tray icon.

For me, this makes the window come up pseudo-minimized each time.  That's probably not the right term (pseudo-minimized?), but the screen shot shows what I mean.  The window is minimzied to a title bar, in the lower left portion of the screen, and needs to be restored.

If the window is shown when the application is exited, the problem doesn't occur.

Edit:  I think this is what Windows XP does when an application orders its window to be minimized, but a task bar button for it hasn't been created for that window.  Just a stupid-user, non-programmer guess.

Version 1.00.04 is better.  It's not like I don't know what all the text in the window says.  :)

One problem I've noticed--and it probably doesn't matter for Google--is that if you have $PRANDFILE$ with an imbedded space (e.g. "$RANDFILE$ $PRANDFILE$"), the space will always be sent, even if $PRANDFILE$ isn't used.  This occurs for every $PRANDFILE$ used (e.g. for "$RANDFILE$ $PRANDFILE$ $PRANDFILE$" you might have "recirculated kakemonos ", and for "$RANDFILE$ $PRANDFILE$ $PRANDFILE$" you'll have "recirculated kakemonos  ").

I'm almost afraid to mention it, but a bunch of the controls aren't visible at 120 DPI.

scott, what is going on with your avatar?

What, you don't have authorization to view it either?  It's just a quickie little image I put together.  :)

Thanks for Random Submitter!  Giving it a try now...

You mean to say that Gmail Drive won't work on your system?

Ugh the Windows Installer...  I can't think of any other bit of software that makes my blood boil on so regular a basis.  That piece of shit irritates me every time I use it.

Why a developer would purposely choose it over freeware alternatives, even for tiny, one-file applications, is beyond me.  For one thing, it creates a slew of registry and file litter, regardless of how small the application that gets installed is.  I find it ironic when I notice that the entire application itself is much smaller than the installer's remnants, and when the application itself uses one (or even zero) registry keys, but the installer creates a dozen or more.

Then Windows Installer--piece of crap that it is--decides on a seemingly random basis to make changes to your system, totally without notice.  This has happened to me with Paint Shop Pro and Microsoft Word 2002 more than I want to think about.  For no apparent reason, when I've launched either of those applications, I'd see shortcuts recreated all over the place, optional features re-added (even though I didn't want them), and other aggravating insanity like that.  I've even had this happen immediately after a reboot, during startup, out of the blue!

Windows Installer also seems overly complicated, and messy.  Why does it create Config.msi folders all the time, and why is it always under the root directory, and not under %temp%?  Why does it lock files and directories for no apparent reason?  Why does it need its own service?

It all makes me almost grind my teeth into powder...

Hey I don't use them! :)  The dates are from 1997, if that gives you an idea how old they are...  I actually run a totally sound-free system.  I hate that stuff.

Mouser included a bunch of WAV files to use for email notifications, so I've uploaded a couple that I've had for a very long time.  I don't use them anymore, but now that I hear them again, I may start.  One tends to boost the ego, the other, errr...  Well...  :-[

Best E-mail Client / Folder Content Counts
« on: May 18, 2005, 10:30 PM »
I have a correction to this:

One thing we love, that few other email clients seem to have (none of the others we looked at in this review), is the listing of the folder content counts, not just new-message counts, in the side bar. Most email clients only list the count of new unread mail; TheBat! shows both. Folders with unread mail are shown bold.

PocoMail 3 has a way to show folder content counts, too.  You click the Mailboxes header pane, then select Columns | Show Total Messages.

I like being able to decide how many toolbars there are, and exactly what is on each one.  I don't like their toolbars.  (PocoMail is even worse.)  And someone please tell me why UltraEdit is now past version 11 and STILL doesn't let you LOCK the toolbars?  Simply double clicking the wrong thing, or dragging just a wee bit, can screw everything up.

Well what can I say; I move them where I want them, and it sometimes resets them to default, other times adds a cute little space here and there...

Best E-mail Client / TheBat Toolbars
« on: May 18, 2005, 05:18 PM »
I tried out The Bat! Pro, but its toolbars kept moving around on me each time I restarted it.  This gave me the feeling "Oh great, a whole new set of annoyances...", so I called it a day.

Opera is $40 USD, but I don't think that's as bad, since it is a lot of things rolled into one, not the least of which is a nice, secure browser.  (Yes, I know it's really "$39", but I can't stand those targeted-at-idiots mind games, and don't like to play along.)

Still, I will give TheBat! a look

I have to take that back.  Unless a serious discount comes through, there's no way I will or can pay this much for an email client:

35 Euro = 44.15600 US Dollar (The Bat! Home Edition)
45 Euro = 56.77200 US Dollar (The Bat! Pro Edition)

I can't believe that PocoMail itself is $40.  I paid $25 for it originally (don't know what the 3.0 upgrade cost, though).

This just seems excessive to me.  Maybe I'm just out of the loop.  It seems as if TeraByte Unlimited is the only shareware author who hasn't gone insane with the prices lately.

Best E-mail Client / The Bat! PGP Support
« on: May 16, 2005, 03:07 PM »
Does the "Home Edition" of The Bat! support PGP, as mentioned in the review?  The Pro vs. Home comparison page just mentions "Message base encryption", which doesn't make it clear to me.
