On my desktop and my laptop, both Windows, I use a couple of mice.

The desktop, I use the Logitech G603 - Wireless and Razer DeathAdder on the laptop. I have been hearing good reviews of the Razer DeathAdder V2 Wireless, but the price stops me from getting one.

Lintalist is a wonderful tool. I've been a regular user for years.

The one thing that hasn't changed in all these years is the non-coherent user interface, especially the font sizes. For example:

• The search field uses a smaller font size, compared to the product name or menu
• Similarly, the column header of the result list rows and preview all use a bigger font size than that the ones above
• Menu icon sizes, are all small

Any recommendations for a daily journal application on windows?

Applications that prompt at periodic intervals, and save entries into a searchable system would be great. I tried Anuran from our own DC member, but I felt it was too basic for my use - because it does not support rich text, does not have a calendar, and search results were not filtered as you type.

Another good application is TechHit's QuickJump. Go here.

The folks at TechHit know a thing or two about implementing instant / incremental search. I ended up buying a copy of SimplyFind for Outlook, which uses pretty much the same philosophy.

For a couple of years, I'd moved out of SmugMug to Zenfolio and then to 500px, but came back to SmugMug this year. Zenfolio is good, but it tends to be slow on occasion. 500px is just a little too expensive for my usage, otherwise it's good.

X1 and Listary are my current go-to products. I use X1 exclusively for Outlook email. I haven't found anything quicker. The interface which starts with a list of all available content through which you filter out content makes it truly search-as-you-type. However, like jity2 I have noticed undocumented limitations when it indexes very long books (PDF and MS Word), which makes it less useful as a Desktop Search software.

Listary pretty much has similar speeds as Everything while searching for file names. But, Listary does a better job integrating with Windows Explorer and xplorer2.

Thank you for your responses, app103 and Milesahead.

I tried BrowserBunch again, but it does not seem to work, so I think I might be doing something wrong. This is what I have tried: After placing BrowserBunch in the Roaming folder on my Windows 7 machine, I used the /setup key to add Chrome, Aurora and IE to the buttons. But, when I click on an URL, it continues to open up in IE, which is my default browser.

I need to keep IE as my default because of the many Intranet pages I visit every working day. However, I prefer Chrome for email and for sites which I expect to later read on a tablet . I use Aurora for a bunch of other sites.

This is my first idea suggestion for NANY. I have probably searched and tried out most of the available ones: including BrowserChooser and BrowserChooser2 (the latter started as a fork of the former, but now appears abandoned).

I've also tried using Selector a while back when the Favessoft was available. But I find it takes too many actions.

Browser selectors were a fairly frequent request here on DC:
IDEA: Choose which browser will open a url from external app (here)
IDEA: Shell extension which would let you choose which browser opens a hyperlink (here)

Coming back to the idea. I've no programming experience, but can help with UI reviews. Also after reading through many threads, I assume creating a configurable launcher is probably not an easy task.

Nevertheless, here's what could be a useful tool:
1. When a user performs a specific click (say Ctrl+Middle-click) on a URL, a quick selector is displayed. Instead of a mouse click, a similar action could be performed using the keyboard (say a Ctrl+Shift+Return on the keyboard).
2. A user should have the ability to specify that some domains directly open up in a specific browser. This particular feature might be a quite a bit of coding, I reckon.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Last year, I set up an HTPC or sorts using a Dune HD Duo (http://dune-hd.com/e..._hd_media_players/12) as the core. To play music, audio books and movies/documentaries, I use a few of 'green' 3.5" drives from WD, Seagate and Hitachi. What I like about Dune is:

• its ability to play most file formats,
• the nice Zappiti media wall (http://zappiti.com/zappiti-skin.html)
• the clean video up-scaling

The Duo has now been discontinued by Dune, although firmware updates continue to be available. You could however look at the currently available models, which should fit your budget.

Just noticed that Cintanotes is being offered at a 50% off on their website.

In their latest version history, they have listed a new feature: Simplenotes sync. I haven't tested it yet. However, Alex, the developer, does a good job with new features, and fixes problems quickly.

Hello,

I have tried a few of these, including Keynote, OneNote, TreeDBNotes, Rightnote, Cintanotes, Evernote, and Simplenote. My work primarily revolves around design and journalism. So, I have always felt the need for a software that would be a good mix of  collecting abilities, hierarchical categorization, live search and lately 'anywhere access'. Am yet to find one that provides a good mix. Righnote and Simplenote is what I use now.

If you haven't already, TeamViewer and LogMeIn are good options. I've tried both on occasion, and find them pretty good.

I find viewers that create a database a less than optimal solution. The vast majority of the quicker viewers create a cache or database file. While some of them have an option to turn off caching, display speeds take a hit.

The only one that doesn't cache is Irfanview.

PIMs have been one my fancied applications for at least 10 years now. Over the years I have moved from ECCO to KeyNote and then to Infoselect. I did also try Zoot for a while, and used to love its Zooter and auto-categorizing. Later I moved to a combination of OneNote and CintaNotes. Although I have never been quite happy with OneNote, I have not found a good replacement yet. CintaNotes is good for what it does.

PIMs are probably one of those products that a lot of moderate and power users may use. In their variety, I find this class of applications very similar to ToDo List applications. There are a multitude of products out there, each with its own strengths and quirks. Every few months a lot of new products show up with a lot of promise but quickly languish for lack of development.

Based on your posts and opinions, I tried out RighNote, and it definitely looks good.

Every time I see a new review, I eagerly look up the application, but I almost always come down disappointed. A few features I look for are:

• Auto categorizing of incoming content – Zoot was wonderful with this
• Search as you type (live search) – InfoSelect did a great job with search filtering
• Sync across multiple devices – have an online option.
• Quick and snappy, with a small footprint

I guess Aram (SuperboyAC) had these listed in his Notetaking Software roundup.

Like many of you, a good PIM that works for me will remain a distant dream, quite like that Indian parable of a mongoose with half a golden coat.

One problem with fSekrit I have found is that it uses a new name everytime it opens. I understand this is is required. However, there are times when it is necessary to inform clipboard viewers that you do NOT want it to capture the clipboard update.

While you're making changes to the code, would you be able to implement this flag too:

In our community-run library, we have about 20 computers connected through a LAN. Between them, we have upwards of 150,000 files stored on four computers. These files are of format .doc, .html, .pdf, .txt, .xls and .msg. We've been trying to come up with a search solution that will allow users (who are decently computer savvy) to search all the files, and them access them over the network.

Is it possible to:

• Run a freeware desktop search on the central server and access the search engine on the local LAN?
• Index network drives of four computers, and make them searchable?

We tried to implement this using Google Desktop with a web-server called DNKA (http://dnka.com/). Unfortunately, the latest version of Google desktop that DNKA 0.49 supports is GDS 4.2006.0627; we need to use GDS 5, or later.

fSekrit / Search as you type (or incremental search) in fSekrit

For a while now, I've been looking for an encryption tool that allows me to store data in a text file, and provides reasonable security. This is because, on occasions, I've to share my desktop, and fSekrit fits the bill.

But, one feature that I'd love to see is incremental search. As Jef Raskin so eloquently put it, "A search is either incremental or excremental."

Do you feel it is doable? I understand it may go against the keep it small and simple philosophy of fSekrit, but...
