General Software Discussion / Re: BULK Rename Utility

Or here Mini-Reviews by Members - I love the Bulk Rename Utility!  :P

I searched the DC forum before I posted... but I guess I didn't choose the correct wording?     I didn't use Bulk in the name but I found it again anyway... through Gizmos.   ;D

Besides... it may have been updated since this 2005 post?   :)

This BRU has a lot of options.  :o   I only use a few, i.e. File (2), Remove (5) and Numbering (10), but it's nice to have the additional 10 Options in case I need them.   :D

It's freeware and you can see all the features here or... download it here.   :)

If by some chance I compose something I really like... can I post it from My Personal Area ?

When your post in Personal Area looks the way you want, click Modify, copy the source (the text that appears in the editing textbox) and then paste it into a new post on whatever thread is appropriate. I think only moderators can Move a post.

Thanks for your info, kyrathaba, you've indirectly answered another question of mine.  :)   I was wondering if I could totally screw-up and post something from My Personal Area and the answer is NO.  Because I have to copy/paste where I want it to be.   ;)

Sorry for the delayed response   :(   and Thanks Again!   :D

Sorry to resurrect this, but if you go into IE 9's Settings --> Advanced tab --> Under the Accessibility section, you have 2 options:

  • Reset test size to medium for new windows and tabs
  • Reset zoom level for new windows and tabs

Enable both and you should be good, other than having to manually increase zoom level every time.  I suppose this would be most beneficial if you rarely increase the zoom level and least beneficial if you always increase the zoo level.

HTH

No need to be sorry for reviving a post, johngalt, no matter how old it is.  Future viewers may find your additional info more useful than the other replies.   :)   Besides... what's the point in starting a New Topic about an older one that's already here?

Thanks for your new info... but I'm currently using IainB's solution.  Please see Reply #1... bullets 1 & 2.   :D

@Ath: Thanks for helping out.  =]

@crabby3: Thanks for trying out sWeather.  I hope you find it useful.  =]  BTW, InnoSetup is an application that makes installers for software.  In other words, it makes the "Install Wizards" you referenced in a previous post.

sWeather is GREAT, skwire, just what I was hoping to find!      I especially enjoy your Change the Weather!? option.   ;D

I received this email from someone having trouble running one of our coding snacks downloads (i've edited it for a bit of clarity)

"I downloaded the zip file, but when i ran the exe program inside the zip file it says something about some missing files.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?"

ANSWER:

Unless the zip file contains a single setup exe program, you always need to UNPACK/EXTRACT the zip file first, creating a new folder with the contents of the zip file in it.

This new folder with the extracted contents of the zip file will be the new home of this program - you can then move the folder someplace permanent and run the program from there.

So in short, don't try to run programs from inside zip file directly - always extract the files first, otherwise the program won't be able to find its data files.

Wow Mouser... I really could have used your step-by-step answer today.  I think I'll start reading (and maybe reviving) older posts... so other beginners, like myself, can better understand how computer stuff works (or doesn't work).

I did get some great help today but your step-by-step approach is more my speed.   :)

Is there a Post Practice Area on DC where I can work on my posting ability but not actually post it?  Like a SANDBOX that nobody else was access to?   :-[
You might also want to look at this editor that understands bulletin board code. With it, you can compose your messages while offline and polish them to your heart's content before posting them (just copy from the editor and paste into a new message or a reply. It was written by DonationCoder member fenixproductions. BBC Editor provides you with a text entry pane on one side and an output pane on the other, so you see a real-time preview of what you type and how it will look on, say, DonationCoder.

Thanks to you, cranioscopical, I downloaded BBC Editor.   :)   I really like the real-time preview idea and the offline use too.

I'm used to 'Install Wizards' and can't handle much less.   :(    Does sWeather use one?
Not for as far as I can see.

Normal steps for this 'portable install' would be:
- Download the zip-file
- Unpack all files to a directory of choice
- Create a shortcut to a handy place, like the desktop (right-click-drag from Windows Explorer to desktop, release, choose Create shortcut here, optionally rename the shortcut)

You could PM Skwire, and ask if he can provide an installer, if needed I can assist with some Inno Setup knowledge.

I guess I'm not as dumb as I thought I was.   ;D   Thank you, Ath, I followed your instructions and it's working just fine.   :)  I have a new toy!

Not sure what you mean by 'Inno Setup'     but I welcome any knowledge you wish to share.   :)

General Software Discussion / Re: WEATHER or Not ?
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:12 AM »
I've been very happy using sWeather by long time DC member Skwire.

Doesn't have an alarm setting, but that can be a feature request away, if you ask nicely :D (though detecting 'nasty weather' could be an issue)

Thanks, Ath, I think sWeather would be great!  I don't really need the bad weather alert... I just added it in case it was available.   :)

One more question.  I'm an absolute 'Novice-User' when it comes to computers.   :-[    I'm used to 'Install Wizards' and can't handle much less.   :(    Does sWeather use one?

General Software Discussion / WEATHER or Not ?
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:02 AM »
My new search engine is DC!   ;D  I'm looking for a simple weather program that can display my local temp in the System Tray.  And maybe an Alert popup or balloon that'll warn me if some nasty stuff is headed my way.   :)

No need for active-maps or graphics.  I'll be tuned-in to NOAA if there's a hurricane brewing...  :(   Just the temp and early warning would be nice.   :D

The one that I was interested in at DC, Weather Watcher, is no longer freeware.   :(

We are going offline on January 18 to protest the SOPA bill.

I always wonder how much good such things do, but we stand with our brothers and sisters at Wikipedia, and they have determined that a blackout protest is important -- so we will join with them.

You can read more about the blackout here: http://en.wikipedia....mmary_and_conclusion

See also the earlier discussion on this DC thread.

There's a brief mention of the blackout protest here. Under: 'Here comes the sun...'
I'm just glad I missed it because I may not have rediscovered DC and your Great Forum!

That could be quite handy for sites with many/large pictures for reading small fonted comments.
It's certainly handy. I like it because I am generally likely to be more interested in the text than the pictures. If a web page is too "noisy" with pix or ads., then I usually resort to reading it via the FF add-on Firefox Reader.

@crabby3: This could be useful info. if you spend much time in the IE9 browser - Internet Explorer 9 keyboard shortcuts
It includes the Zoom controls (i.e., Ctrl+Plus, etc.).

Thanks for the link, IainB, it now resides on my desktop.   :)   I thought I had found all of Windows' Help pages but I don't recall seeing this one.      Thanks again!

Hi, Stoic Joker, I have IE9 but I can't seem to locate your suggested setting.   :-[   Is it in Internet Options/Advanced?

Sometimes... Windows and I don't see eye-to-eye about how to word stuff... so I may be staring right at it. Is it listed as 'Enable view statusbar?

Yes, kinda :)

In the IE9 menu it is: View->Toolbars->Statusbar

Note: I only brought up the older versions of IE earlier because IainB seemed to be pondering (aloud) how long the hotkeyed zoom feature had been available.

I found it, Stoic Joker, although I think it was another way?   :)    I right clicked the top of the window and a context menu appeared; and there it was, Status bar, the 4th whatever bar down.   :)   I clicked it and Bam!, thanks Emeril , there it was in the bottom right-hand corner... just like you said it would be.   :D

The only reason I included the IE9... was to save you the time/trouble of having to scroll around looking for what version I had.   :)   I didn't mean anything by it.  :-[

Try here:

Check at the very bottom of the forums list on the "Forum Home" page. You should see "My Personal Area".

Thanks, Renegade!   :)  I have started a DC session many times, with the specific intent of exploring the whole site, but inevitably something catches my eye and I forget all about it.   :-[

If by some chance I compose something I really like... can I post it from My Personal Area ?

They also mentioned wanting a "Zoom Indicator". Enable view statusbar and it will be in the bottom right-hand corner.

I am not all that familiar with Internet Explorer, but I just now verified that this works in my verison of Internet Explorer (IE9). At a guess, it would probably be a standard for most browsers/versions.

To get full control as you seem to need here, all you have to do is use these keys as described:

  • Set Zoom to 100%: To set/restore the zoom level to 100% - either use menu items View | Zoom | 100%, or (much quicker) - press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the "0" (Zero) key once.
  • Zoom Up: When you want to enlarge a particular page, press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the "+" (Plus) key once. That will zoom your page view up a step each time you press the "+" key. If you keep the "+" key held down it will step up through each zoom from where you were up to the highest zoom level.
  • Zoom Down: When you want to diminish a particular page, press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the "-" (Minus) key once. That will zoom your page view down a step each time you press the "-" key. If you keep the "-" key held down it will step down through each zoom from where you were down to the lowest zoom level.
  • Restore 100% Zoom: To restore any page view (whether enlarged or diminished) to 100% zoom level, press and hold the Ctrl key and then press the "0" (Zero) key once.

If you have zoomed a web page view up or down in a tabbed view, then each time you load another URL (address) into the same tab, the view will be maintained at that zoom level until you press "Ctrl and 0" together (as above).
If you have zoomed a web page view up or down in a tabbed view, and you open another tabbed view of another web page, then the default (100%) zoom level should automatically be applied. (I say "should", because I seem to recall having read somewhere that there might be a way to change this default behaviour.)

You can also zoom in and out by pressing the Ctrl key down whilst mouse-scrolling Up or Down, but this can be a bit laggy/jerky and imprecise (you don't necessarily know what % zoom level it is at), and it can sometimes induce motion sickness in some people.

Thank you, IainB, for your Richly Detailed explanation. I grabbed it with SC and sent to my desktop for future (probably today)reference.   :D  If this seems weird... please see bio (paragraph 4) Some things sink-in instantly... others bounce off a few times. I blame my gene pool   ;D

I found the Ctrl + Mouse-wheel, in your last paragragh, at another forum. I didn't join or post... just read other posts. Boy... what a site that was.   :(    Very unfriendly looking... compared to DC. Maybe it was the color scheme. Like a bathroom with orange and green tiles. (My apologies if anyone has this)  The URL was something like 'WinHelpMePleasePleasePlease...'  ;D

P.S.  I'm still learning the proper way to post, so please excuse my lack of complete information. I use IE9.

BTW  It's not obvious, to me anyway, why would someone choose to continue using an older version of IE?

General Software Discussion / ZOOM setting reminder ?
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:26 AM »
Occasionally I have to set my zoom to higher than normal.  Usually because, for some reason, the site or author has chosen to use a microscopic serif font and the letters look all globbed together at only 100%.      You've probably seen this?    Talk about asthenopia eyestrain.    ;D

Because of this seldom use... I don't always remember to reset back to 100%.   :'(   Mainly because there's no obvious indication on IE that I've changed the zoom.   :P

I'm looking for a very easy to use and understand program(?)    I'm not sure if this needs to be a program.    Something as easy as mousers SC maybe?  :D

I'm not always plugged into my modem so if it started when I launch IE, and stopped when I close it, would be great.   :)

And, of cource, there needs to be an indicator that automatically appears somewhere noticable when I first change the zoom.  One that's always on top and stays pinned.   :)

Freeware is preferred but not necessary.   :D     Sound familiar to anyone?    :)

:-[ Sorry for the slam Renegade. Maybe you could add some more-user-friendly stuff to the version I tried. Like maybe making the sample scan pics smaller (there seemed to be a lot of unused space around both) and stacking them to one side? Or add an Auto Select to just the 100% matches?   :)

I don't have a clue about how to write or create a program, much less change an existing one, so these are just Novice-User suggestions.   :-[

I envy people who can create their own programs and this includes you! If I had just a fraction of your knowledge and experience I wouldn't have to constantly surf the web looking for solutions or answers. (Hopefully free but not always)   :(
