The image was obviously Photoshopped, but not to add that single object, but remove all the others;)

It would have looked a lot more like this, if they had not cleaned it up:

(see attachment in previous post)

Yeah... this was more my mental picture of the space-crap out there.    ;D   I guess there's no economical way to coax some of this stuff back home?

Perhaps I should work on a how-to "dummies guide" style tutorial for posting to the DC forum, complete with screenshots?

I am not being sarcastic. It's actually one of those things I am quite good at. I can simplify basic algebra to the level the average 5 year old can understand.  :D

Any relyable help or guide would be useful, app103, if it's pinned and locked.

@app103
I guess it shouldn't be locked until after it's been tried or tested by us dummies.  How else could you get feedback... right?

I know, firsthand, how hard it is to outline all the steps... to do something... especially if I have done 'it' a million times.  Sometimes I leave out a step or have them in the wrong order or skip a key-word or some/all of these.   :-[   ... which makes the learning-process, for the person, even harder.  (In my case... more daunting.   :( )

And... once your guide has been perfected... maybe you could add it to the other pinned stuff in all the areas at DC; where people might need this How-To?   :)  ...just a suggestion

Well the See all metadata, images and captions. indicates that it is one of many pieces of space debris that they know of. See also link SPACE DEBRIS.

@ SeraphimLabs,

I guess all of this leftover junk will eventually come back home and burn up?  Even the Hubble?  After the ISS?   :tellme:

I could see it being that.

Thermal tiles are black in color, and one that cracked could produce a triangular piece that in zero-G would simply float away slowly enough to be photographed.

But how could it get cracked in the first place and then manage to hang-on during all the vibration and flexing of blast-off; only to tear away in zero-G?   :tellme:

Wherever the anchor is will be where your picture gets displayed in your post. You can't see the picture until you actually post it to the forum because it also needs to be uploaded before the forum software can display it..

Does this apply to My Personal Area as well?  Should I be able to see my attachment when I click post?

Probably when mouser is on or nearing 12 nn or 12 midnight. (As it commonly is across the web).

I have one weird experience recently where it send me that message but a single click refresh and the forum was instantly back on.

If you were being sarcastic, I apologize for missing it.

The first sentence is genuine or real.  The second was a joke or sarcasm.

Sorry for the confusion.   :(   Bad habits are hard to break.

Does anyone know the approx. time of day that DC runs the forum backup?

I think the Trigger is: Whenever crabby3 clicks reply/quote/new topic/or anything   ;D

Hey, IainB, could you please supply me with a How-To for the Click to Reveal/Hide box in your Reply #4 here?  I can't seem to figure it out by myself.   :-[

That's called a "spoiler". Just select the stuff you want to hide behind the button, then click the little button that looks like this:  (see attachment in previous post)

I'm a mess... I want to hide an image I have but... how do I get it from my machine to DC?    :-[

Living Room / Re: MISSING images or pics ?
« on: January 25, 2013, 03:14 PM »
I occasionally do. Usually caused by one of the following:

  • Poster forgot to attach the image to the post.
  • Poster used another site to host and hotlinked the image and the image was deleted later on.
  • Poster messed up the code to insert the image.
  • My pc lost connection to the internet before the image could be loaded.
  • I have images turned off in my browser and forgot to turn them back on. (this would affect all images on all sites, not just here)

Today it seems maybe it was my browser?  I went to include this DC link - Reply #91 and it's there... a YouTube video.  Couldn't tell what it was yesterday.  There was just a blank white box with a slashed-O in the upper left-hand corner.      Is there a name for this slashed-O thingy when it's displayed like this?

My only recent change to my machine was uninstalling Java.

Java isn't used for rendering any part of this forum, so uninstalling it wouldn't affect whether or not you could view any of the images in posts. If that were the problem, then I'd be having trouble viewing images too (and I am not), as this computer that I am currently using has NEVER had Java installed on it.

Not knowing that much about computers in general, I thought I'd post the Java uninstall info, just to make sure.   :)

Have you run across any missing images here app103?

Did I get help removing the virus?  If you mean tech-support... no.  I'm a computer novice, at-best, but was able to access a friends computer (novice also) and print 22 pages listing several ways to fix this issue.

mine required about 15 different steps using 7 different apps - we didnt find anything more after step #8 or so, and most of the steps at the end were precautions to help avoid recurrence (e.g. disabling java).

Would you care to enlighten us/me by naming your steps or apps or days or hours?   :tellme:

@ app103

;D Maybe not safe for work

The Killer Biscuits is really funny except for the last sentence.  IMO ditzy is ditzy no matter the hair (dye) color or gender.   :)

Or maybe it's from the '50s when that concept was more widely accepted?

Well, technically, I'm a blonde...so if I am not offended, it doesn't matter.  ;)

Depends on the person I guess.  My color has always been mousey-brown... with occasional years of sun-bleached blonde.  But as my forehead grows   its changing to a reddish skin color.

What's the story... removed, broken link, my browser...

Yes.

Granted it depends on how many images are not appearing how often, so if it's only a few here or there, now and then. Then sure any of the above could be the culprit. But if it's a bunch of them frequently...more digging/detail is most likely advisable.

It's not a bunch... more like now and then.  My only recent change to my machine was uninstalling Java.

My 2 cents-

In defence of PicPick...

FWIW

In the beginning....
I used the screen capture that came with Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9.  It was cumbersome at best because I had to open PSP and keep it running to grab stuff.

Next choice...
Through Gizmos I found Donation Coder and Mouser's SC.  Was much, much better than using PSP but not ideal. (for me anyway)

PicPick...
Don't recall where I found it but... PicPick's initial PNG grab is displayed in ppi... when opened in PSP9... which is what I was looking for and still want.  And the Protractor is equally useful.

For some reason the Minds at Jasc didn't include a Protractor with PSP9.    With PicPick I just right-click the tray icon, left-click the Protractor, and there it is... ready to use... anywhere.   :D

Don't know if SC has these features now?   :tellme:

Forget keyboards. I often wonder why it doesn't occur to some people it's possible to wash their hands in water. Y'know, like maybe once or twice a year - whether they need it or not?

I was at a client site last week that had a collection of the grungiest, dirtiest (and any other "est" you can think of) keyboards imaginable. And this was a...well let's just say they were in as "white collar" a profession as they come.

I was tempted to put biohazard warning stickers on these things - assuming I could get them to stick.

Maybe you could send me one of those bio stickers - It'll stick   ;D   Yes I wash my hands but not every few hours.

My 2 cents-

In defence of PicPick...

The 'constant updates' can be stopped by: Open PicPick Editor, click the file menu in the upper left-hand corner, click Program Options, click About, uncheck the box in front of Check for program updates, then click OK.

The 'crapware bundle' can be unchecked in the Install Wizard during installation. 1 click

EDIT:  As I recall you have to chose Custom Install to avoid the crapware... so maybe it's 2 clicks.

--------------

Personally I don't use all the options.  Just the screen cap and occasionally the Protractor, which doesn't seem to be listed in the dotTech review.

What exactly would I gain by turning off one of the remaining three (2 malware, 1 AV) real-time scanners?

Speed.

I think maywarebytes has a better reputation than SUPERAntiSpyware. Having three scanning simultaneously will slow things down and might not necessarily be of any more help than just having the real-time protection of two.

But again, it's your call :)

edit/ PS 10 or 11 minutes is still a very long time for startup :-\

My PC slow-down has been so gradual I don't remember how long it should be.  What's the rough average for a 4GB RAM laptop?
