I read the post that the intention was to  run one laptop from another laptop.  There  are some good solutions mentioned already, but I figured I would add a few more building on what has been said.

Most monitors have more than one display input.  Like a 2 hdmi or 1 hdmi and 1 vga.  You can easily get  adapters to help if the laptop does not have a matching output. You can toggle between displays using the monitor's menu and sometimes using a hotkey in conjunction with a utility provided by the monitor manufacturer. I think some LG monitors  have this kind of utilities.  A few newer monitors have a usb switch built usb switch, but you can also buy one really cheap.  ( I think someone else mentioned the usb switch in the thread) This mimics the kvm.  Kvms are pretty cheap nowadays.

As an aside, Windows 10 also provides the ability to Project a screen on another windows 10 system on the network. This could help if you were trying to run both laptops from one of the laptops.  How to use screen mirroring on Windows 10 to turn your PC into a wireless display

I know a few people who  use the project screen instead of something like anydesk or ultravnc.

Thank you all.   I am making notes of the other options, but  so far I have been pretty happy with Xyplorer. Using the Portable trial, but plan on purchasing it.   Interestingly enough, at first the preserve creation date did not seem to work.  This was after going into preferences and selecting the setting.  It would "appear" to not work when copying many files, but would work fine with selecting an individual file.  I consider this a user interpreting error.

It turns out that when you  select all, copy and then paste a large number of files from one pane to the other, it initially displays the current date. But after the copy process is completed, the creation date is switched/retained in the new file section.

Leaving this here incase someone else is looking for the same function.

Currently working on copying several TB of files from hard drives.   Will see how it works with comparing and transferring in the coming weeks.

78
So I decided to try out xyplorer because it seems powerful enough and because of the licensing.  My hope is that by using it I will get a baseline to compare.

One thing that stuck out to me in the comparison was the undo feature.  Being able to undo over 250 file operations :) I hope I never need to test that.

79
@wraith,   Thanks I understand now.

@4wd,  Thanks for the clarification.  When I mentioned getting the portable, I was thinking I would get the standalone, and just hold off installing it  Rely on the portable while waiting to purchase my new system.  I am not totally convinced to go with DO.

I need to look at the other options.  The most important thing immediately is that I can preserve the creation date when copying between drives.  Would be great to be able to do some more review through the file manger before transferring.

80
Not advocating DOpus one way or the other, (I've used it since my old Amiga days), just answering the various points.
.....
I doubt whether I use even 20% of what DOpus is capable of but I'm comfortable with it and I'm happy to support the developer.
@4wd
thank you very much. I've been going through and exploring the list of plug-ins you have linked to. I have just begun. It certainly looks like it will do everything I need. I'm a little bit hesitant to purchase it as I will be getting a new PC soon. But I see I can get a portable version for $10.

In many regards right now the most important feature I'm looking for is the retain/preserve data creation date when copying files from one folder to another. I need to consolidate files from a number of external hard drives spanning back to 2005.

Thank you again. I'll continue to go through the links

81

......I have all of those except Total Commander, but I replaced that with Altap Salamander.  I use DO whenever possible on my primary machines, and XYPlorer portable everywhere else.

@wraith thanks... What made you make the move from total Comander to atap salamander

82
#2 (comparing files) you don't specify the criteria. Dopus offers a bit comparison

@tomos There are a number of criteria. Most commonly I need to do the following:

A) Find duplicates of a single file across multiple external hard drives.
B) Compare different versions of the same or similar text file, PDF, open office document, Microsoft office document and spreadsheet. This is in order to determine what the most recent version of the file is. In some cases text from previous revisions is needed to be pulled and added to the most recent file.

4) Can index and include external hard drives and directories not currently connected to the system.
you don't mean index the contents of the files here, do you?
Same question for #3

I actually did mean indexing the contents of the files withing the directory. But I understand that might require another tool. It seems that Windows indexing used to do a far better job than it does currently. Now I'm speaking from operating systems that have long been abandoned.  I think that is one of the reasons why I felt like this was a possibility for third-party file manager.

83
A file manager really isn't the optimum tool to manage indexes.

@shades, thank you.  Everything you say makes sense.  And I certainly want the file manager to be as nimble as possible.  I think my looking for those added features comes from a false impression that I hade developed that, file managers had moved in this direction. Being the all in one tool.

Directory Opus and Total Commander allow for scripting, so you can create your own options/buttons to have access to indexed content. With the other tools in the set you consider, I'm not sure if scripting is even an option.

I almost included scripting in my  list.  I knew that Directory Opus and Total Commander had these functions.  I thought that some of the others on my list did as well. Actually it looks like multicommander has some scripting http://forum.multico...x.php/board,7.0.htmlhttp://forum.multicommander.com/forum/index.php/board,7.0.html

Its features do look impressive.  Thanks for the link to the forum.  That is helpful.  As ana side, there are two different searches on the forum page. Depending on what search you use it asks for a login.

** edit 2 **
Diffing file content is also out of the scope from any file manager. While it may sound logical that a file manager should be able to do diff file content, diffing file content is actually very difficult to do. Sure, very basic text files are not too big of a deal. ..... <snipe>  Haven't seen much improvement with this over the years in software like Beyond Compare, ExamDiff Pro or WinMerge (free). And this is dedicated software, made by knowledgeable people for their living. The maintainer(s) from file managers don't have that expertise, so whatever diff capability they mange to add to their file manager, it will be a pretty poor implementation. And you'll likely just go back to the tool you always have been using to do diffs. Resulting in unnecessary cruft inside the file manager.

Recently I have had to go though alot of files.  The ability to compare and immediately see the differences between files, specifically when they share the same or similar name would be greatly beneficial.   I do not mind  using a different application, but being able to identify the differences in the file manager- before moving would be great.  Being able to move the files for a directory, to later analyze using a file compare application would also work.   This is one reason why preserving the create date is important.  It provides some important information when determining what to do with the file.

84
I am looking for a file manager that has as many of these features listed below as possible.  I cannot believe I have been suffering with windows explorer since upgrading to windows 10.   I have listed what I am looking for in order of importance.

Hoping someone can help me narrow things down as there are so many file managers/ comparison tools.

1) Retains/preserves date created when copying files from one folder to another (important)
2) Allows you to compare files and find duplicates using criteria beyond the file name and file size
3) Can search contents of files (open office, MS Word, text files) when searching
4) Can index and include external hard drives and directories not currently connected to the system.
5) integrated viewer that allowed you to compare the content of files (like scooter software’s  beyond compare)
6) Ability to synchronize files across network
7) Provides the ability to add tags (automatically would be great)
8) Provides a way to make a note on a file ( specifically on audio/video) files
9) has portable version

While I like free and open source, I am not married to "free"

Looking at Directory Opus, Total Commander, XYplorer, xplorer2, Altap Salamander, Free Commander, Beyond Compare

Wow... Very cool.  I did not even know it could be used as a scanner application. I have a legacy sheet feed scanner. I keep meaning to try and resurrect. I believe I could load 20 to 30 sheets.

« on: October 10, 2020, 10:33 AM »
thanks.  I am not in front of the project now, but I wonder if I could adjust the angle of the screen shot/image,  Place text box. Then adjust the angle of the screen/shot back the other way.

Another way might be to use the watermark, but I have not looked into it.

Pdf editors have the ability to "stamp."

Thanks again.

Walling
Walling is more than just a tool to organize your information. Walling helps you unload your ideas, jot down notes and save bookmarks frictionlessly. It connects those ideas with what you added in the past, creating a network of ideas and resources that's easy to explore and curate from.

You can also use Walling to plan and organize ideas when you’re working on a new project, researching a topic, writing an article or just about anything. With your ideas side by side, Walling empowers you to step back and get a high level of understanding on what you're working on and helps you synthesize information more efficiently.
Walling.app

I've been using Walling for about a week and I think I'm sold! It seems to fit with how I'd like a note taking app to work, just throw everything at it and organize a little bit later. There are some features missing and there's no native iOS or Android app yet (the former should be in beta within a week), but I'm definitely liking it so far.

The Walling community can be found on Facebook: https://www.facebook...om/groups/wallingapp

Edit:
Walling is free for up to 100 Bricks. You can subscribe to Walling premium to get unlimited Bricks and Walls for $4/mo. Walling also offers Workspaces for teams with centralized billing for $6/mo per team member.
Looks interesting. Is it possible to use completely offline, without relying on their servers?  I see there is a desktop app.

UPDATED: I did end up purchasing a couple copies.  I felt reassured by the process and by my experiences. In short it seems like the licenses work. There is just uncertainty if there will be some sort of issue with them working in the future.  I have provided some information about my experiences below, to help others make a decision.

When I did some research online initially, I thought this deal was ending in a day or so. I found a number of forums/threads with people speculating about what kind of license it was.  I am not remembering where but the conversations were similar to what has happened in this thread. A number of people had decided to take the leap and I did as well.  I decided it was worth the risk to purchase 2 licenses. I had an old pc I wanted to try and get running for a family friend and I wanted a license to use in the future for myself.  I also know a few people IRL who took advantage of the deal.  The purchased was handled by cleverbridge.  I will copy the information from the emails I received below.  I was provided with one order confirmation, followed by another email with the product keys and instructions.

About a month after purchasing, a friend mentioned he had had some issues with his license and asked if I had had any issues with mine.  He told me he had contacted support and they helped him resolve it and that he was pleased. He mentioned he found someone else online that had had issues and support had also resolved their issue. I had not used either of the licenses I purchased, so I figured I should make sure at least one of them worked by doing a fresh install on the old pc I had. Cleverbridge offers a 60 day download link from their server, but I decided to be safe I would download straight from Microsoft.  The install went fine. The only annoyances being Microsoft related annoyances:)  The license activated and it has gone through a number of rounds of windows updates with no issues.

I know someone else who purchased installation media with their license. It was an added cost per license of $6.95 for the dvd.  They received a dvd (photo copied below).  It was mailed from Creativemark, Black & White Building London EC2A 3AY United Kingdom and they thought that was strange that it came from the UK.  Their invoice also stated that "Cleverbridge, Inc. is the merchant of record for this transaction. 350 N Clark, Suite 700, Chicago, IL, 60654, United States Tax ID: 20-4503251"   This DVD does not look to my eyes like an "official" Microsoft dvd, but to be honest I have not seen Microsoft media since Windows 7 as they have moved heavily towards their installation media creation tool.

Below I will copy the emails I received- omitting the licenses/personal data with XXXXs.  Also note that a number of the download links have expired.
Hope this helps

How do I upgrade from Home to Pro?

Although we've sold you a full version of Windows 10 Professional, most people will only need to upgrade from Home. First thing to note, you can only upgrade from Home if Home is fully activated. If you have an activated Home, to upgrade to Professional, simply follow this within Windows 10:

Go to Settings > Activation > Change product key and you'll be able to drop in your new Professional code and unlock the Professional features. No need to re-install Windows 10. Once you drop in your new code, expect Windows 10 Home to download additional Professional components then either reboot or log you out (you'll need to log back in). Once this happens, you'll have Windows 10 Professional.

Alternatively, you can use your Windows 10 Professional from scratch on a brand new PC. Follow the instructions supplied and use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to create an install DVD or USB stick.

IMPORTANT - Can't Upgrade from Home to Pro? Read This First

If you are trying to upgrade from 10 Home to 10 Pro, you might find your key doesn’t work immediately. Windows 10 will claim the product key can't be used to upgrade. Why not? Effectively Windows 10 Home isn’t ‘ready’ to upgrade as it has unfinished updates.

To fix this issue, you need to run through all Windows 10 updates and reboot. Indeed, reboot anyhow, as often there’s a background process which hasn’t finished updating. Sometimes you might even have to reboot twice as Windows 10 will stack small updates which install on system boot and will stop any upgrade to Professional.

Once you've checked for updates and rebooted (we can't emphasise enough that you need to reboot), try entering your new Product Key again.

Still Can't Upgrade?

We've seen various reasons why your system might not be ready to upgrade - reach out to us and we'll get back to you as soon as possible with our 'top tips' to help.

General Software Discussion / Re: Repair MP4 video
« on: July 20, 2020, 02:04 PM »
To Update...  I tried using ffmpeg.

The video is about 20 minutes long. It recovered the first half of the audio and most of the video, though at the beginning the audio and the video were not in sync.  I am more interested in the audio.  I might look into a way to extract all the audio.
The way this process works is that it an analyzes a working file and compares it to the broken mp4.  The only working file I had from the same session was 10 minutes long. So I wonder if that was what cause it to stop working at the end.

I was recording a video to MP4 using OBS and the system shut down unexpectedly.  I have a 40omb file that will not play.  I tried to use VLC to convert it, but it will not work. Does anyone know of any tricks?

Have not tried Video Repair from Grau GmbH for Windows yet.  Seems like there might be better options.

Any recommendations?

This is a solution someone developed about 4 years ago to map markdown files.  Thought you might be interested.  A really nice write up.

...Markdown Mapper, and is a command-line utility, written in R (see below) and open-sourced under the GPLv2 license, that reverse-engineers concept maps from plaintext notes.

Markdown Mapper

How it works

Markdown Mapper treats each line / paragraph of text as a node in the network. It goes through the text, file-by-file and then line-by-line, making inferences about which lines are related to which other lines by looking at tags and text structure (e.g., with the indentation of list-items). As it goes, it creates an edge list, a table with three columns: From, To, and Relationship, where the From and To columns are lines of text from the input file(s), and the Relationship column is the relationship between them (e.g., Parent, List item, Tag, Contains Type of Thought, etc.). It then uses the qgraph package to draw a quick-view graph from the edge list, and the igraph package to create an adjacency matrix (a tablular version of an edge list, where the row and column names are lines of text from the input file(s), and each cell has a 1 wherever the lines have a relationship), if the user has asked for one.

As it goes along, Markdown Mapper also hard-wraps the text Hard-wrapping = inserting a line break. every 20 or so characters, in order to make the text nodes more rectangular (this keeps each node from displaying as one long line of text).

I am curious what other systems you use and to what purpose.
My system is only starting to evolve. Hesitant to put too much weight on it when I know that Obsidian could be very different in 6 months.

So I have WriteMonkey 3 sharing some files with Obsidian. They are in the WM database with the synced copy accessible to both. In Obsidian those files are linked to many other notes related to the MSS being written.
I prefer writing in WriteMonkey and its incredibly convenient to have all the related gubbins networked together and visible in Obsidian.

I also have the folder with those texts open in ProWritingAid simply to aid analysis as I progress.

Naturally I also write notes in other apps, especially on Android, and they're transferred into the folders of the Obsidian vaults.

Thanks. That is helpful.
I plan on giving it a try this weekend if I get some time off work.

95
Most of what you listed can already be "in" a plaintext note
And one of the aspects I like is that the note itself isn't "in" the system. It can simultaneously be "in" many systems so long as conflicting changes are avoided. Work in one program, save before switching to another.

Obsidian looks as if it will grow into a great spider, with any number of mites on its back, but lays no claim to own any of the notes.

I am curious what other systems you use and to what purpose.

96
Your are right Nod5,

Underlying question: what different ways can something be "in" the system? What way is most useful for what content?

Agreed.   And to what purpose.

Most of what you listed can already be "in" a plaintext note in the minimal sense of adding a reference/link to it.

But I assume you want more than that. For example, the full plaintext content of a PDF file added as a note on par with the other markdown notes? So that that content becomes searchable and linkable at some more fine grained resolution (chapters/paragraphs/sentences/words).

You are correct that I want more than that.  The question about getting things into the system was more about the workflow to arrive at a place where everything is ready and usable. In the case of a pdf, I would like the plain text with annotations and even highlights ingested so that the connections are still intact.  Annotations already linked to the text (images or audio) in the pdf.  There is already inherent relationships that I would rather not spend the time recreating prior to utilizing the information gathered.

Or a way to embed an audio file, shown as a playback control with pause play and a slider at a specific position in the notes? Or some other way?

This would be great. Being able to record, cut splice and index the audio (with some versioning history) in much the same way that one can with text would be even better. There is specialized software that can be used to do this though they are pretty clunky.  With most of these knowledge management systems, the most you can do is link or embed.

We can think of internal and external links. Internal links are resolved inside the software. For example a link in a MD file that links to a section in another MD file. External links point to everything else, items in the local filesystem, or LAN or Internet.

Do you know how these links that are resolved inside obsidian work?  Are the MD files taged somehow to indicate that they are linked to other files. I assume that Obsidian looks at the MD files to create load much the same way a website loads.  The MD files are the building blocks.

97
If you work plainly with text, which is fine for capturing your thoughts- this looks pretty amazing.  However I find myself thinking how do I get other things in it?
-Saved web pages.
There are save webpages as markdown extensions.  There is the issue of stripping the character of the site- which sometimes is helpful to add context. For instance, we Andy's Notes Web page was listed here and I visited it, I remembered being in that place- I have landed on that page on more than one occasion- while researching different things.
-Pdfs
-Book Marks
-Citations
-Annotations/ Highlighted text from PDFs ( spanning 20 years)
-Audio  & video recordings.
-Docs & Spreadsheets.
-Rss
-Previous Wikis
-Correspondences ( email, chats, channels)
-Anki
-Stickies
-Contacts
etc etc

One cannot expect to get everything int, but hopefully with its popularity.. it will be possible.

98
However, in theory it means I might be able to use that scripting to automate some of my workflow going forward, and if I am lucky,  incorporating that vast amounts of files I have scattered in different formats.
And presumably the same would be possible through the Obsidian API.
With its popularity yes.  Also the fact that there is an audio plugin among the first crop of plugins is promising.  So many markdown-centric  apps want text only ( for obvious reasons) but having the ability to make audio memos.... makes me feel this might be different.  However, it is possible that markdown will win out.

99
https://notes.andymatuschak.org

This website design is so incredible.  I want this.  How can I do this?

Superboyac,
I stumbled onto some clues that might help your figure this out.  If you take a look at this thread from a little over a month ago on Ycombinator  you will see somone asked the exact same question after someone said the following:

User rhezab said the following :

"I currently use Andy Matuschak's [1] system, using his note-link-janitor script [2] to generate backlinks and Typora to edit. The only thing Obsidian adds is the graph view for me, but it seems that Obsidian generates backlinks using file name, not title. I prefer linking by title. Perhaps this can be an option? The editor also seems to be lacking a little... for instance I can't seem to render math. Hopefully some of my feedback will be useful to you.

Overall really cool idea, but probably not going to use for now. Will keep tabs, and wish you the best of luck!"
[1] https://notes.andyma...rg/About_these_notes [2] https://github.com/a...ak/note-link-janitor"

Someone else mentioned
TiddlyWiki + Krystal Theme + a few plugins...

which might be another way of doing it.  But the following comment seems more likely

aesadde 40 days ago [–]...I believe you can use this Gatsby theme to get the behavior you're looking for https://github.com/a...la/gatsby-theme-andy "

And if you go take a look it on github, it looks very similar.
Go forth and conquer!

100
I just took some time and did some reading on obsidian and I am impressed.  It does also seem to have a huge following that will likely drive it as well. Interest and excitement like RoamResearch.   The thing that really caught my eye was that it has an audio plugin where you can record directly into a note.  Audio recordings and files ( and multimedia in general) are a very important part of my current "knowledge base."

Scripting  in a product like Trilium does not target me either.  However, in theory it means I might be able to use that scripting to automate some of my workflow going forward, and if I am lucky,  incorporating that vast amounts of files I have scattered in different formats.   I would like something that can rather quickly ingest thousands of varying types of files.
