You don't have to be a power user to benefit from it at some point, especially with ever-increasing complexity of web pages and all applications in general.

Good comments, but I think there you are being unnecessarily kind to web developers. They are some of the most arrogant, inconsiderate, and incompetent jackasses the world has ever known.

Just how in Hades does a web page get to soak up more than 1 GB of RAM?!?

It's insane.

Once upon a time, in a universe far, far away, web developers actually gave a shit about the computing power of their visitors' machines. Not so anymore.

I'm not saying, "Let's all go back to HTML 1.0" or anything of the sort. But if you need to take up 1 GB+ of RAM for your web page... you really need to have a good reason. And when I see 3 or 4 of those in Task Manager, I'm not really thinking that the web devs are particularly considerate of their visitors.

Rant over.

...or is it???... :P 8)

352
I don't even understand how anyone can possibly get away with 4 GB now. I'd go mad. I recently was borrowing a machine with 8 GB, and it drove me mad as I was always running out of memory. 16 GB seems to be about the minimum for daily use without running into problems. When 1 tab in a browser sucks up 1 GB of memory... cripes... And it's not unusual to see pages taking up 100's of MB of RAM.

Beats the new box I got.

I got frustrated trying to find what I wanted and just went out and bought one.

354
But I am able to run a lot of things at once (like virtual machines, for example) without dragging the system down.

^ This.

One of the frustrating things that I've found with Mensa tests is that quite often the questions have multiple correct answers.
Hm-m-m ... checked out any IQ tests lately?  Like, the last two (2) decades?

Well, I did probably around about 8 or 10 years ago. I found many questions simply had multiple answers.

Then there was the Mensa genius who refused to drink evaporated milk because it was condensed.

One of the frustrating things that I've found with Mensa tests is that quite often the questions have multiple correct answers.

He didn't happen to die in the van did he? :D ...Because that could explain why it was so cheap. :o

Nope. Zero accidents. He just died. I don't know how.

Yeah 4 cameras seems a bit excessive

Not really.

Front and rear (2) cameras (DVRs) are for recording accidents. Those are perfectly justified in any vehicle, and certainly not over the top.

The backup camera isn't a DVR. It's a live feed for backing up, and doesn't include recording. Its field of view is just for backing up, so it doesn't have that breadth that other cameras do. Again, a great addition to any vehicle, and especially for larger ones.

The driver camera was stupid cheap. I just got a 90 degree cheapo DVR. It was $20:

http://www.ebay.ca/i...e=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

At $20, who cares? Will it work? Dunno. But it's worth a gamble. It's the same housing as many others, but the guts are minimal specs. At $20, it's not like it isn't worth trying out, and if it does work out, I scored large. 8)

Also, I can use the driver camera to point into the back and then have a small 2.7" monitor to see what's going on there. That's useful to check on the little on rather than trying to turn around while driving.

I'll figure out how the camera works, and see how I want to use it. I might want to get another one. Heck, I considered side cameras, but figured that I'd try out some of these super cheap ones to see if they work ok first. If it works out, I might get a couple more for the sides, but probably not. For side impacts, the front camera will have enough info to determine what happened in a legal framework, though there may be some edge cases there.

Yeah 4 cameras seems a bit excessive

Not really...I plan on way more than that when I get my new wheels - I will have Drivers View recording via a mini-cam hidden in the dash (pointing at drivers face, and remotely accessible) - front facing camera (recording) 2 cameras on the front wings (which will connect to a screen in the car, useful for "corner peeking" where you can select which camera to look through on a screen in the car, and it will show you a nice view of what otherwise may be obstructed) - I will also have 2 of those on the back wings of the car for the same reason.  On top of those I will also have a rear facing camera (not a parking camera...purely for recording purposes).  I will also have a camera pointing out to the sides (will be in the door panels somewhere), which will be on both sides and will be a wide angle lens - this will be a recording only camera - useful for proving an accident wasn't your fault (if hit from the side where your other camera won't be able to see).  All in all that is 10 cameras.

I've considered cameras for the front bumpers to see if I can "peer around corners" there. However, I don't want to spend $200+ on cameras for each bumper. Hence, my initial foray into super cheap cameras to see if they work well enough. If I can spend $20 to $40 on a camera, then I'll likely go ahead with it. But I won't spend much more.

But 10 cameras??? Wow... that's a lot! Remember that you need to have space for those displays. Or, you need to have a good display that you can switch between views on. I'm looking at having 4 displays now, and that's quite a bit (1 front rear cam display, 1 backup cam display, 1 driver cam display, 1 GPS display). Later on I may look into figuring out how to get a system assembled where I can get most cameras on 1 screen, but I'm a long way from that now. It may not be worth it.

The rest seem to be to have a record of potential traffic incidents, including a view of the driver if the car is stolen or if the driver is attacked or something.

I'm thinking it would be best to just go with how I tell the story ... As apposed to taking a chance biasing a jury with video of me shooting him.. ;)

BWAHAHAHAAHAHA~! 8) ;D

I have a knife in my glove box for utility purposes as that's all that you can really do in Canada. Sigh... I am rather envious of the freedoms Americans enjoy. ;(

If you read further into the story, even the IPO basically say "It's illegal, but we don't care"...which, IMHO, is as stupid as it can get...if you don't care, then why the hell make it illegal in the first place?

Because when you make everything "illegal", anyone who is "inconvenient" can be thrown in a rape cage.

Personally, I say f**k it..carry on doing what you were doing...if you wanna backup your music/movie collection...or anything else you legally own...then do it.

That, and I would go further. Back it all up. The legality of it is irrelevant now. Because everything is illegal.

Their time of vampiric reign is long over and they need to all collectively fuck off and get on with dying..

And especially the dying part. The sooner, the better. Although... a little agony wouldn't be all that bad. 8)

Doesn't this ruling basically make the entire proliferation of copyright protected media illegal?

The governments and courts have +5 rings of protection against logic and scrolls of protection from sanity in massive supplies. That doesn't even take into account their +5 armour of confusion that prevents them from understanding when they're being total idiots.

Sooner or later if it isn't already, sharing a picture of a kitten leaping into a bucket with your mom will be a high profile crime worthy of half a million dollars in fines and fees and 20-life prison time.

It's very convenient when everyone is a criminal.

I've been telling people to just practice civil disobedience. This is a law that obviously cannot be enforced because collectively the citizenship of the country simply ignores it and has no interest in obeying it.

If the courts actually worked as intended they would recognize this law is of corrupt intentions and does not benefit the people of the country, so they would order it striken from the books without any further negotiation.

Justice is blind, but she can clearly smell money.

In other words... Someone will need to wield Stormbringer... The sword forged to devour the souls of gods. This won't end well.

I have no faith in the UK or any hope for it. Rulings like this only serve to show that the UK is strong competition for the US in overthrowing the DPRK as the world's worst police state champion.

So, I'm finally back in Canukistan, and got a new vehicle. Well, 2... but the other will come later...

I picked up a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with insanely low mileage for a great price. I'm really sick of sedans. I'm done with them. For now.

renegade-s-ride.jpg

It drives really well. Not a truckload of balls, but it's a family minivan, so, that's to be expected.

I've got 4 cameras ordered to install in it:

1 & 2 - Front and rear dash cam recorder.
3. Driver recorder.
4. Backup camera.

I put on an 18" rearview mirror, and it's WONDERFUL!!!

For anyone that doesn't have a large mirror, consider one. They rock. Here's something similar to what I got:

http://www.amazon.ca...ords=rearview+mirror

I paid less than that though, so look around if you want one.

What pretty much sold me on the model was the "Stow-n-go".

The previous driver was an old fellow that passed away. He had some payments left, and his son didn't want to keep the vehicle, so he took it back to the original dealer. I had the whole service history, which made it a much easier decision.

I've had it for a few weeks now, and am very happy with it.

:tellme:

I loathe SaaS. Most often it's just implemented to milk customers. However, I'm still beholden to clients, and Windows is the only option. And my development work now requires Win10.

Renny! I didn't know you were so restrained! Or should I check the basement for the unrestrained version?

I've mellowed. A lot.

Instead of wanting to feed SaaSers through a woodchipper, I only want to feed them through a paper shredder now.

I think he should add a pair of small inconspicuous CO2 equipped self-inflating floatation bags to the frame in case he stalls out and accidentally sinks.

Ended up using this:

http://www.partition...rtition-manager.html

It worked.

I didn't even try the other one as it didn't get hidden system partitions. This other one (MiniTool Partition Wizard) got the hidden partitions, except for 1, which was a diagnostics partition.

Anyways, the system is now off a horribly slow 7200 rpm 2 TB HHD and onto a beautiful Samsung EVO 840 1 TB SSD. :D

I'm going to give AOMEI Backupper a shot at being my next go-to backup utility. I read a review of a bunch, and it seemed to be the best.

http://www.backup-utility.com

First job is to do a system clone onto an SSD to speed up my new machine before upgrading to Windows 10.

I'll post back on how it does.

FWIW - While system cloning is locked, posting to social media unlocks it. Like this post. :) They ask that you post this:

AOMEI Backupper, a FREE and easy-to-use backup software, supports system backup, file backup, disk partition backup, scheduled backup, etc. Download at: http://www.backup-utility.com

But from the text on the unlock popup, it seems like just the product name is required. We'll see. ;)

Soooooooooo... A couple years later, the WH finally manages to say, "Piss off."

OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE RESPONSE TO

Pardon Edward Snowden

A Response to Your Petition on Edward Snowden

Thanks for signing a petition about Edward Snowden. This is an issue that many Americans feel strongly about. Because his actions have had serious consequences for our national security, we took this matter to Lisa Monaco, the President's Advisor on Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. Here's what she had to say:

"Since taking office, President Obama has worked with Congress to secure appropriate reforms that balance the protection of civil liberties with the ability of national security professionals to secure information vital to keep Americans safe.

As the President said in announcing recent intelligence reforms, "We have to make some important decisions about how to protect ourselves and sustain our leadership in the world, while upholding the civil liberties and privacy protections that our ideals and our Constitution require."

Instead of constructively addressing these issues, Mr. Snowden's dangerous decision to steal and disclose classified information had severe consequences for the security of our country and the people who work day in and day out to protect it.

If he felt his actions were consistent with civil disobedience, then he should do what those who have taken issue with their own government do: Challenge it, speak out, engage in a constructive act of protest, and -- importantly -- accept the consequences of his actions. He should come home to the United States, and be judged by a jury of his peers -- not hide behind the cover of an authoritarian regime. Right now, he's running away from the consequences of his actions.

We live in a dangerous world. We continue to face grave security threats like terrorism, cyber-attacks, and nuclear proliferation that our intelligence community must have all the lawful tools it needs to address. The balance between our security and the civil liberties that our ideals and our Constitution require deserves robust debate and those who are willing to engage in it here at home."

Follow @WeThePeople on Twitter all day long for a series of Q+As with various Administration officials on the petition responses we released today.

Tell us what you think about this response and We the People.

At absolute best, it is dishonest and egregiously ignorant. Snowden doesn't get any right to any defense because of the national secrets act (or whatever it's called). He literally would not be allowed to defend himself in court. And they want him to come back to a kangaroo court where he'd be hanged before the sun set? Right.

It took over 2 years for them to vomit that nonsense onto the screen. Shameful.

374
Finally, I avoid using insecure operating systems (Linux, OSX) wherever I can.

What are you using? OpenBSD or another BSD variant?
