Meh! Don't suppose MajicJack has PCMag staff in their pockets do you? ;D

Then again the only reason I read PCMag is because Dvorak's still has his page(s).

@Paul Keith

I see your point, I am waiting for google to come out with something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't already thought of it and already have something in the works.

In an era of multi-gigabyte HDs.. and pokey dialup speed upload caps (relatively speaking) imposed by ISPs.. I am not sure how your typical user benefits from having online backup services. "Online backup" that name needs to change to something else if those companies want to woo the average user market.

In a business environment, where your upload/dowload speed are typically the same, I can see where online backup has its place and use.

ok.. off my soapbox now.  :P

Living Room / Re: Drive by malware ... ouch
« on: September 27, 2008, 10:31 AM »
@Carol Haynes - I think you have something similar to what one of my family members had last year, in her case, it was anytime she would click on a web link (usually the first four) it would redirect her browser to some porn site. Spybot and lavasoft didn't detect/remove anything.

I ended up using PC Tools (free 1 year sub) and that worked like a charm. It found the issues and the evil program that kept changing its name and fixed them all. After that, I installed admuncher and a hostsfile, never heard about spyware/malware problems since.

A lot of these drive by malware usually come from various web ads (scripted typically).

Ad Muncher and good a Hostsfile would help prevent 99% of these type of issues.

Living Room / Re: You might want to skip the whole Blu-Ray generation
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:17 PM »
Meh.. still waiting for that 200GB per disc...  :-\

----------------------------
How much data can you fit on a Blu-ray disc?

A single-layer disc can hold 25GB.
A dual-layer disc can hold 50GB.

To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.

General Software Discussion / Re: Name The Best UNZIPPER!
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:46 PM »
@Curt

I am pretty sure when you double click on the a given download.rar file/icon on dsb, it will automatically open the .rar/zip whatnot in winrar or any other unzipper/packer that is associated with the downloaded file (in this case, the file would launch winrar).

Profiles.. I am assuming you mean the current user (settings)?
Looking at the exported settings file, yes, it seems to only apply to the current user, but I am going to take an educated guess and say that winrar should automatically import those settings (though you will most likely have to run winrar first from the app folder). The settings file doesn't seem to be "branded" to any particular user or user name.

I love winrar.

It's awesome in how self contained the application is. extract/install the app to a given folder, configure it to how you like it, then export the settings a settings.reg file in the same folder as the app.

Now you have basically made the application a portable app. Winrar automatically will try to read the settings.reg file if detects that it has never been ran on a given machine.

Any idea in how to set TCC as the default command line interpreter (without replacing cmd.exe)?

General Software Discussion / Re: Raxco - Amazing customer service
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:34 PM »
Another huge fan of Raxco here..  :-*

I have been using Perfectdisk since 2005 (every version since) and am very pleased with it.

I would also like to thank Ms. Clontz for her prompt support and service. I know of a few companies (shareware and bigwig companies) that could learn a few things from Raxco when it comes to support and service.

soooo... http://www.mouseprint.org says it all. ;D :P

Ever feel like that companies are scamming us by making us feel good by giving less of a given product but keeping the size same? In the last few years, I have noticed quite a few companies reducing the contents but size of the package seems to be the same.
mouseprint has a nice layout on various products showing the changes made by companies.

KenR: I like your macro feature idea. Flexibility is always a good thing.

Outertech: Thank you for the clarification and I will try your suggestion.

Very nice minireview (if you can call it that!), KenR.

I still have one question about the product, will it auto sync my IE/firefox bookmarks? Meaning, if I add/delete a favorite/bookmark, will linkman auto detect that a new bookmark was added/deleted and adjust accordingly.

This seems like it would be a great case for PC World Magazine's "On Your Side".

It wouldn't hurt to email them and see if they can take the case for you.

Living Room / Re: Poratble applications
« on: March 14, 2008, 10:40 PM »
Portable applications should really be self contained to the folder the application is ran from. Any ini/cfg/xml config file should reside in the same folder as the program is in.

Registery settings should be avoid except in cases where the program ties in with a browser (e.g mass downloader.. you right click in the browser and get options to download to mass downloader) or whatever it is designed to do. If the those registry settings are missing, the application should recreate them on program launch.

Technically, just because it is a portable application, it shouldn't require any more memory than if the program was actually "installed".

Open with list, you can assign any program by browsing to it. It doesn't care if the program is "installed" or portable, just as long as it is available when it is needed.

Double clicking vs single clicking is like learning French grammar or orthography --> all the exceptions don't make sense. Yes most computer illiterate double click everything, so they have it covered. If some stuff required three clicks, maybe they'd triple click everything?

You may also want to see if your motherboard support website offers a bios update or if it is a brand PC (e.g DELL) go to their support site and see if there is a firmware update.

These days bios updates work wonders.

Living Room / Re: HELP !!! Outlook corruption
« on: February 06, 2008, 08:27 PM »
We live in hope - I have just applied SP2 and all the pre-SP3 updates.

So far I have set up about 10 rules, reorganised emails etc., compacted my main PST file without problem.

You might want to give www.aid4mail.com a shot just in case you want to try another email program, aid4mail does a great job exporting/importing into various email clients.

Ex-Outlook user here. Started with TheBat!.. was lured by Outlooks all in one interface and functionality.. was good till I couldn't open my pst folder one day. I am still not sure to this day if it was an update or if outlook crashing on me that may have caused corruption. long story short, went back to TheBat.
