I do have sympathy with one man shows, and accept that they cannot be available all of the time. Of course, that is also a real-world disadvantage and means that future development is entirely dependent on that person's motivation and availability.

potential customers are turned off before they can evaluate anything.

True. I've certainly been put off. I would not have downloaded it if I had known it would be limited to 10,000 files.

As suggested, I emailed the author about a week ago about the problem. No reply (yet); that doesn't impress me either.

The grandaddy Keynote meets most of these needs. Portable, system tray, autosave options, fast. light on resources etc. Doesn't autohide but can be set to minimise after x minutes of non-use.

No longer being developed but a huge number of people still use it.

Hi Dormouse - no, that's not right.
That's good as the estimate ended up at 205GB. ;D
I have run it now, only to hit the 10,000 file limit of the unregistered version, which really isn't big enough for me to assess the prog.

I have also noticed that the search seems to return each usage of the search word rather than each document/file that it is in; I'd like to change that but haven't found the switch to do that yet.

After the comments here, I thought I'd look at Archivarius. Installed it and then saw the option to estimate the Index size. Still analysing but showing an index of 80GB on data of 216 GB. Can this be right (I notice that the stats previously given seem much more reasonable)? Don't think I will ever run it if it is.

I use ToDoList (see https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5057.0 and http://www.codeproje.../tools/todolist2.asp) which is free and has a button that allows you to measure the time spent on each task. It's not the reason I use TDL, but it is a nice extra and TimeKeeper doesn't seem to add much functionality (if any).

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« on: October 07, 2007, 09:09 AM »
I've used pretty much all the alternatives suggested here including addons to Explorer.

I've ended up with 2 that I use regularly.

On my own main computer Dopus (and also on others via usb). You do need to configure it to your own needs to get the most from it; and this does take a long time because there are so many options But the result makes a lot of common actions very easy. It's a bit of a swiss army knife of a file manager able to do a lot of things that aren't pure file management. But it is powerful. The other downside (apart from the complxity), as so many others have said, is that it is more expensive than all the alternatives. but if you use it a lot, it is worth it. Doesn't stop me resenting the cost.

The other one I use regularly is Xplorer2 (mostly in the Lite version which I have put on all the other family computers). Relatively pure file manager. Elegant and very powerful.

I do need another file manager though. I had expected to move all the computers on to Vista, dual-booting with Linux, and then never to 'upgrade' Windows again. I don't think I will get to the Vista stage. I have it on one computer that came with it. Have the option of installing it on another - but doubt if I ever will. After XP, it is likely to be Linux for everyone with just one Windows computer for software not available on Linux. And I haven't found a Linujx File Manager in the class of DOpus or Xplorer2.
