One thing I think you should make available (same price as the mug) is the Teddy Bear.

General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« on: December 09, 2009, 05:15 PM »
...
Scripting Languages use variables - example: VBScript.

How about this...

The only reason that any one conceives of VBScript, Javascript, etc. IMIO is because the "script" moniker was hung on to the name.   Would it (them) be known as "script" if the author(s) had named them "VBExtra," "JavaRod," etc.

Could this be a valid explanation?

Yes.  They are most definitely scripting languages.

If it is a list series (series or parallel) of coded instructions which does not use "variables" (volatile locations in RAM that can be changed, directly or indirectly, by the programmer's action) it is a "Scripting" language, regardless of whether it is "compiled" or "interpreted."

Scripting Languages use variables - example: VBScript.

Living Room / Re: DC Scoreboard... anyone wanna play?

Sounds like what Pligg is for - Pligg was originally created as a Digg clone.

In regard to your "pligg" suggestion, I could try that or maybe even set it up on some other server, but how would that benefit DC?  Consider the prerequisite to that... how would we get the DC folks over there to vote/use?  Would this be powered by a direct link on DC to the "list" site?  See, There are lots of questions I have no reference to answer.  It is because of the caliber of intellect and integrity that exists at DC that would give a tool like this an integrity that could be used and depended on.  I can assure you this is in no way intended or purposed to put my name up in lights.  My purpose is specifically for the betterment (AFAICT) of DC and the folks there.  I would be totally willing to converse via PM with anyone that wanted to run with it and I would bow out as a principal, if my lack of expertise or experience hindered the project.

Pligg is an open source solution.  You host it on your domain and make modifications to suit.  Even from your updated description it sounds like what Pligg does.  Allow you to vote, and thus bubble up, postings - what the categories are, what the posting are is up to the person setting up a Pligg website.  I have even seen websites setup for voting on software using the Pligg engine.

I only posted it as a starting point.  If it worked minus a couple features, I would be willing to hear how you would like it to work and make modifications for a future release.

That video made me think of a soda I drank as a kid called Moxie.  Its a regional soda found in the New England area of the US (around Maine / New Hampshire).  Anyone here ever try it?  If you did, you'd remember as its a very strange soda.

edited: just got to the end where he mentioned Moxie

Living Room / Re: What's your favorite LOL joke?
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:01 PM »
Here's one of my favorite quick jokes:
A woman gets onto a bus with her baby.

The bus driver says, "That's the ugliest baby that I've ever seen. Ugh!"

The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her, "The driver just insulted me!"

The man says, "You go right up there and tell him off. Go ahead, I'll hold your monkey for you."

Since a bug was found (Thanx Carol!) I pushed an update sooner than I had wanted.  This update contains a new feature 'Add to My Places' where you can easily add any places, from another users map, to your list of places.

I think it will be a great idea.  Let me know if there is anything I can do.  This will fit into a future feature where places can be connected into a trip or travel view (still in the planning phase right now)...

Thanx mouser!!!.

Working on a new mobile version of the website and after that I may work on a new group/category feature so users can join groups - will be thinking about how a DC group may work.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to open large html files
« on: October 09, 2009, 06:24 PM »
If a browser won't open it (try Chrome) then you won't find anything as most 3rd party browser app use one of the rendering engines (IE or Firefox most likely).

emEditor will open it without a problem.

Question is what are you doing with a 42MB html file?  What's its use?

Plarker now has a 'places in the area' feature where anytime you view a marker bubble it will tell you how many places are in the area - looks at a 100 yard radius.  Logged in users will have the places limited to theirs and there friends places.  This feature handles the issue where friends mark the same place.

The new Add Place is now live.  Please check it out and let me know what you think.  Entering places is far more efficient then before.
