General Software Discussion / Syncovery Release v10 Feature Complete
« on: September 13, 2022, 10:24 AM »
The final release of Syncovery v10 could happen any day now.   :D

Tobias reported that Syncovery 10.dev.17 is now feature complete.

https://www.syncover...om/download/windows/

He also announced that buyers of Syncovery v9 on or after September 1st, 2020 will receive a free upgrade to v10 - as usual a very generous offer.

Main new feature of v10 is its ability to combine versioning with block level copying, using the Syncovery Remote Service v10.00 to make a copy of the current version. There is a new checkmark on the Special tab sheet: X Use Remote Service to Copy Files for Block Level Copying + Versioning.

Syncovery is an extremely powerful synchronization software used by many in this forum.

I thought that the new feature set in v10 could be more elaborate/flashy/helpful - I don't know. Maybe I just don't understand the importance and significance of the new feature matrix yet.

BTW he also has a forum now for news and tech support.

Let's see what he will announce when the final version is released.

Hello,

I have been using Palm Desktop now for over 20 years, since I have customized the fields so much, that it would be a really big PITA to migrate my data of 5000 contacts to another PIM.

I used Day-Timer Organizer with its superb Palm synch integration having built my database starting with DTOs DOS predecessor Instant Recall, and after Day-Timer Organizer stopped working, I was able to synch the dataset through my Palm with Palm Desktop and then worked with the Palm Desktop ever since even after I ditched my Palms.

Now I bought a new Minis Forum PC and even though it was advertised to have Win 10, it came with Win 11 pre-installed. So I thought I give it a try and I wasn't expecting any incompatibilities but it totally messed up my Palm Desktop database.

Palm Desktop under Windows 11 cannot display Umlauts like Ä or Ö any more. Instead of an Ä I have now Ä in my database, which is getting increasingly worse, since it seems every time I edit the data, some more funny letters are added.

Checking Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support under Windows 11 Settings - Region - Administrative - Change System Locale did not help.

Would anyone know what I can do to make the Palm Desktop work?

It functioned flawlessly under all versions of Window 10. I can't figured out what changed in Windows 11, that I am having this problem.

Hello,

I am using the Sandboxie fork from Xanasoft:
https://github.com/s...boxie-plus/Sandboxie

There are two versions:
a.) Sandboxie which has the same UI than the old Sandboxie
b.) Sandboxie Plus which uses a QT interface that has more settings for the newer features Xanasoft has developped.

I have not been using Sandboxie+ yet, but I am thinking of switching.

Does anybody have any experience with Sandboxie Plus and would like to share it?

General Software Discussion / Syncovery - Pro or Premium Version?
« on: October 28, 2020, 04:35 PM »
Hello,
I finally want to buy Syncovery.

I already described my major use case here:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=48520.0

So the question is: Pro or Premium?

The feature that caught my eye was Block Level Copying in the Premium version, apparently not part of the Pro version.

But I didn't fully understand the description. I am familiar with delta copying which was part of the old LapLink (what a great program that was!) or is also implemented in Rsync.

So my main question is: Would this Block Level Copying be useful to me? I plan to synch well over a Gigabyte with my two OneDrive accounts, so if it really would speed things significantly, it would be a blessing. A lot of the big files are videos, VeraCrypt containers, and Drive Snapshot disk images. However, except for the VeraCrypt containers, these file types do not change, it's more of an all or nothing deal.

So, what do yo think?

Would the Premium be worth the extra money?

Thanks for your input!

Hello everyone,

last night I worked until 4am to connect an old XP machine with a Windows 10 laptop.

The units and the network have no internet connection and they are connected by a dumb hub completely isolated from the world (that's why we still feel safe using the XP).

The Win 10 computer is actually replacing another XP rig. That setup worked ok in the past.

Now however, I can get access from the Win 10 machine to the XP, but I cannot access the shared folder on the Win 10 from the XP, which is basically the sole use of this setup to access MS Access database files on the Win10 and design and print a daily schedule on the XP computer.

It is driving me crazy, I thought it would be simple.

My guess is that the Win10 has stronger security which the XP cannot handle. I can see the Win10 machine name from the XP in the workgroup, but I can't get any further. No shared folders or files are showing up.

Do you have any suggestions, please!?

Hello,

I wanted to introduce quite an interesting deal - with a few caveats:

ThunderDrive is a relatively new company in the Cloud Storage space and is trying to win a lot of customers.

They are having the following unlimited bandwidth (but of course limited storage of 2TB/4TB) deal:

2 TB storage space with unlimited bandwidth (here bandwidth is the combined amount of uploads and downloads to your cloud storage in a month) if bought directly from them with a one time lifetime (so NO yearly) fee.

The 4 TB plan comes up when you try to buy this package - then you will see a pop-up introducing an additional 2 TB for another $39, which makes it a grand total of $98.

You have 2 TB storage space with unlimited bandwidth for this price if you buy directly from them; their resellers who offer this same $59 package have a 2 TB/month bandwidth limitation.

The deal can be had here: https://thunderdrive.eu/offer/

One should know that the service this young company offers, is still a little bit short on features.

Right now you can only upload through their web interface. No apps on any platforms yet.

The company plans to introduce apps for iOS and Android this quarter. In the final quarter there roadmaps states that they will start a desktop app, third party import and multi-user support. They also mentioning the introduction of a new pricing structure soon, which I take to mean a price increase, since I doubt that the current prices are sustainable and are probably serving as a capitalization boost to get the company going.

There roadmap is spelled out here: https://thunderdrive.eu/roadmap/

Their website looks professional and has chat support. First a bot and then if the bot cannot answer you will be switched over to a human.

Oh before I forget: They DO have servers in North America AND in Europe. Your account will be placed on the European server, if you buy through https://thunderdrive.eu, if you want to be placed on North American servers, buy through this website: https://thunderdrive.io.

If anyone has used this service already, I would love to hear your experiences.

General Software Discussion / Syncovery - OneDrive - Encryption
« on: August 14, 2019, 07:00 PM »
Hello,

since I think there are quite a bit of Syncovery users here, I thought I could ask you the following question:

Can I use Syncovery to synch my files to OneDrive without using the OneDrive folder on my machine in more or less real-time and with encryption on OneDrive?

So that any file I set Syncovery to sync will get uploaded to OD with encryption when I change the file on my PC?

Hope you can answer that.

Be well.

Found Deals and Discounts / VueScan Discount
« on: August 14, 2019, 06:45 PM »
Hi,

VueScan regular prices are $39.95 for the standard edition (including 1 year of updates) and $99.95 for the professional version (including more features and lifetime updates).

Currently Ed Hamrick offers a discount of 10$ for both versions here https://www.hamrick.com/reg.html.

However, I just noticed a way to get a $20 discount (20%) on the professional version.

This is the way to do it:
1.) Buy the standard edition for $29.95 here https://www.hamrick.com/reg.html
2.) Upgrade from standard to professional for $50 here https://www.hamrick.com/regu.html
and $29.95 + $50 = $79.95 for the lifetime license with all features - a great bargain!

VueScan has been getting more and more features over the years, upgrades usually happen every couple of weeks. Most scanners, even old ones that do not have drivers for Windows 10 or 7 any longer, can still be operated through VueScan, Multi-Function Printers too.

Here is a review on our site:
Scanning: VueScan and Associates

Enjoy!

I use Firefox a lot as my favorite browser, but lately also found a liking to the new Vivaldi and Iron Chrome derivatives.

One thing I really like about Firefox is, that I can put in an address, press enter and a new tab opens.

I know there is the Alt-Enter keyboard shortcut to accomplish this, but I am so used to the Firefox way, that I always forget it.

I am sure there must be a way to change this behavior. Could someone tell me how?

Hi everybody,

I was on the lookout for the last year for a new version of Abbyy Finereader.

Judging by their usual release cycle I would have expected it about a year ago, but I guess they got too busy on their mobile apps, which are also quite good.

Well finally it's out, and they jumped from version 12 to 14 due to some countries superstitions :).

What is new seems to be mainly PDF editing.

There is also now on top of the corporate an enterprise version. The new "standard" version seems equivalent in functions to the old <= "v12 pro" edition.

Corporate has a "Hot Folder" automation, like for automatic mail scanners, and compare document function. Enterprise ups the corporate Hot Folder limit from 5000 to 10000 docs per month and adds 4 (corporate 2) cpu core ability. Also both have volume licensing agreements.

They don't talk up any big breakthrough in recognition accuracy, but claim even better format retention in this version.

Official asking price for v14 standard is $169 full, $129 upgrade. Usually they allow free upgrades for a few weeks, if you just recently bought version 12.

I like Abbyy Finereader - in my book it's the best available OCR recognition.

Let's wait for some user comments on this new version.

General Software Discussion / How to change tab style in Win10
« on: July 13, 2016, 10:40 AM »
Hi,

I finally took the jump and set up Win10.

One (among many :) problems I have: The highlighted tab f.e. in Total Commander is really difficult to make out, because the color change is just minimal.

Would anybody know how I could adjust this in Windows 10?

The granular adjustments possible in Win7 seem to be  a part of the past.

Hi,

I am still not decided if I want to upgrade to Win10, but time is running out. :)

If I will put in a brand new hard drive and upgrade to Win10 on this new 2nd hard drive with USB Win10 Install media created by the Media Creation Tool and give my Lenovo OEM Win7 Pro Product key to activate this Win10 installation, and let's say after 2 months I decide I want to stay with Win7, can I just plop in the old Win7 drive and be good?

Can I switch back and forth on the same machine this way?

Or is somehow magically my old Win7 installation being deactivated by MS?

General Software Discussion / Win10 installation with MBR
« on: July 03, 2016, 01:02 PM »
Hi,

I just purchased a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad T430. It comes with Win7 Pro.

I bought a new 128GB SSD (my first SSD - the laptop has  a 320GB HD right now) and would like to make a clean windows 10 install and have already downloaded the ISO with Media Builder.

I prefer to have Win10 x64 installed with an MBR so that I can continue to use my vast collection of drive utilities, especially Diskcryptor, which won't work on UEFI/GPT. I do not want to use bitlocker and - please - no discussion about this. :)

Before I had a Thinkpad SL410.

How can I do it? What are the pitfalls and points to regard in this process. What are the BIOS changes I need to do? Does the SSD need any special handling (alignment, etc?)?

Thanks for your tips!

General Software Discussion / Fax Software
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:26 AM »
I am really sick of Windows Fax and Scan.

I cannot send a fax because of some write protection BS message. And it has always been a huge hassel.

I used to be a very happy user of Winfax, before Symantec bought it.

Does anyone know of a good, free software for my Agere based LSI USB modem?

I only use it like once every couple of years, but if I do, I need to send some important documents quickly without fuss.

Hi,

I just recorded an important conversation with a professor specializing in brain waves and it was in a busy dining hall with a lot of people talking in the background and is therefore difficult to listen to.

Could you recommend a software (if possible for free) that can filter out the background conversations and make the conversation more easily understandable?

Thanks.

Hi,

I just whipped up a spreadsheet to calculate PPI, dimensions, and size of a screen.

I uploaded it to my dropbox here, if you would like to use it:
https://www.dropbox....Calculator.xlsx?dl=1

Purpose is to figure out and compare the pixel densities of different monitors, notebooks, mobile phones etc and also to compare their sizes through the area and side calculations.

So now you can easily calculate how much more viewing area you have when you upgrade your mobile f.e. from a 4 inch to a 5 inch screen.

I would also like to calculate the aspect ratios, but I don't know how I can calculate the aspect ratio from the resolution.

F.e. resolution is 1920 x 1200 or 800 x 600 and how can I calculate the aspect ratio from that (obviously 4:3 on the 800 x 600 screen).

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks and enjoy!

Hi,

since Softmaker has a very special UPGRADE offer, you can get its Office software with a 90%+ discount legally TODAY only by following these steps even if right now you do not own their software (because they allow upgrades from their FreeOffice product):

1.) Go to www.freeoffice.com and click on Download and then you get a registration window, in which you should put in the information you will later purchase the upgrade with. Install the software.

2.) Go to www.softmaker.com and click on "Shop".

3.) In the "Redeem Discount Coupon" field enter "dfro".

Voila - you will see the following discounted prices for the upgrade versions (for which you are now eligible since you have FreeOffice - see step one):

Office Standard: $6.99 (Full Product $79.95 = 90%+ discount)
Office Professional $19.99 (includes more dictionaries and an Outlook clone, full product $99.95)
Office for Linux 2012 $10.99 (like windows standard, full product $79.95)

They also have like 50% discounts on some of their font packs (scroll down more).

Enjoy!

General Software Discussion / Skype and Webcam: HD or not?
« on: April 18, 2014, 11:56 AM »
Hi,

I am shopping for a new webcam to be used mainly with Skype, possibly also Google Talk or Ovoo.

My research narrowed it down to Logitech's C170 (640 x 480) or C270 (1280x720) models.

Since I am often in locations where bandwidth is limited or videochat with friends that are in countries where bandwidth and connectivity is soso, the question arises:

Will the C270 or the Skype software automatically lower resolution when the bandwidth is not enough, or would it be better in those cases to buy the C170 which already has a lower resolution and therefore needs less bandwidth to begin with?

Another argument for these two Logitech's is that I want to do away with my ugly headset and supposedly the sound quality of the built in mics is supposed to be rather good.

Thirdly, I can imagine using them in the future with an Android tablet or TV stick, and again I have heard that these cameras seem to be most compatible with Android, if one is bold enough to make a claim of compatibility with Android for webcams.  8)

I would love to hear the opinions of our members.

General Software Discussion / Best (free?) Sandbox?
« on: July 11, 2013, 08:30 AM »
Hi everybody,

I have used the portable Sandboxie now for a number of years and have been thinking to generally Sandbox my surfing and buy the full version (any discounts known?).

Before I do that, I wanted to ask my knowledgeable compatriotes at DC, if there may be another Sandbox which is just as good or better than Sandboxie, and may even be free.

Here is f.e. a list of them: http://malwaretips.c...tualization-Software

I use Sandboxie for the following purposes:
Surfing
Trying out programs
Analyzing programs (where do they write files, how deep do they manipulate my system, exporting their registry entries - so that I can install them manually without bloat if I desire to keep them - I use Sandboxie Diff and/or Total Commander for most of that process).

What are your comments/recommendations?

General Software Discussion / Tapatalk Forum Reader
« on: July 11, 2013, 08:14 AM »
For a while now I have been using Tapatalk Community Reader and am very pleased with being able to read my favorite forums on my Android tablet and smartphone.

One very favorite forum of mine is missing, though. Could you guess which one it is??? :)

It seems Tapatalk can be installed very easily and in a very short time on Simple machines Forums. These are the instructions:

Installation

Download the zip package to your computer.
Login to your forum Admin area
Go to "Package Manager" and choose "Download Packages"
Scroll to the bottom "Upload a Package" section
    Upload the zip package
    Choose "Install MOD"
    Choose "Install Now"
Make sure the "mobiquo" folder AND all files inside has the proper permission (we recommend "755" (chmod -R 755)).

I have purchased the Tapatalk community reader for around $3 at Google Play, but after my purchase, I found it for free at the Amazon App Store. Tapatalk 4 is currently also free at Play, though it may become pay after it comes out of beta.

For me this was money well spent. I can now follow my threads and posts and react quickly to replies. Wish I could do this here too.

The world is changing fast: Let`s embrace the good and discard the bad and we will all grow and evolve! :)

Hi,

I have decided to help this wonderful project of a school for poor girls in Thailand at indiegogo.

One of the things I would like to organise is a live fund raising event streamed over the internet for potential donors.

So: How do I live stream a video fundraising event over the internet to 100+ people for free?

I would really appreciate your help.
