General Software Discussion / Re: malware or ? #1454789523

Why not just write to [email protected] and ask? I suppose you could refer to this page, just to let the current developer (no longer BillP) know that this issue is getting some attention. That might provide some encouragement for him to reply quickly.

N.A.N.Y. 2016 / Re: NANY 2016 Release: SysTrayIconsManage
« on: January 08, 2016, 01:47 PM »
On my system there always have been some icons that reset themselves to hidden. Needless to say, I can't recall specific culprits right now but I do recall the irritation that it causes.

i have noticed this behavior in the past too and i believe it's a bug in the OS causing it..
Same here, which is a major reason I'm interested in SysTrayIconsManage. I'm hoping that Ath can indeed find a way to deal with this problem.

Can we get the "Go To" quick links at the bottom of threads like it was on the old site? It's no fun having to scroll back up to the top of the page just to navigate back to Unread threads or other areas of the site.
I'd like to make a similar request.

General Software Discussion / Re: What online services do you pay for?
« on: September 10, 2015, 07:25 PM »
Like some other folks here, I pay for LastPass Premium and for Netflix. Also for three online services that haven't been mentioned. One is the Windows Secrets Newsletter, which I find very helpful in keeping up with a host of computer issues and which has a pay-what-you-want policy. I used to read Fred Langa's "Langa List," and when he closed that and went to the Windows Secrets Newsletter, I subscribed. His articles and Susan Bradley's I find especially useful. The other two are electronic greeting card companies, Jacquie Lawson and American Greetings. I would also subscribe to Malwarebytes AntiMalware Premium, but I have a grandmothered lifetime subscription. That's true also of WinPatrol, which now uses a subscription model.

Isn't the problem that Google won't allow extensions to be added to any Android browser by a third party, so the only way to make logins seamless is for the password program's authors make their own browser with the functionality built in? At least, that's what I thought from reading Sticky Password's information.
Perhaps I've misunderstood you, but I thought I should mention that I use LastPass on both the PaleMoon browser for Android and the Dolphin browser for Android. Dolphin has a LastPass for Dolphin extension. I'm not sure what PaleMoon does, but I know LP has worked on the Android version of the browser.

My favorite screen capture program is HyperSnap. It's not free, but I've found it well worth its fairly modest price. I especially like its ability to capture long screenshots. It has several methods, including one that enables capturing especially wide shots. Probably the method I use most is scroll region, where you set a width that's less than the entire window and then press the down arrow on the scroll bar to scroll down for as long as is needed.

General Software Discussion / Re: Softmaker Office 2016 released
« on: June 18, 2015, 12:50 PM »
Can someone help me figure out what kind of users prefer softmaker office? I've always wondered...those who use MS office are not really going to use it. And those who don't want to pay seem content with using the free stuff or google docs. So which users like softmaker? thanks
I've been happily using SoftMaker Office for several years. I started with a free version that they offered after a newer version came out. I then was able to upgrade to the newer version for very little money. And I went on from there. I paid for the 2012 update and will probably do so for the 2016 update as well (the Standard version in both cases).

I like SoftMaker office because it can read and edit files people send me in MS Office, and MS Office can read and edit files I've created in SoftMaker (I'm talking primarily about TextMaker/Word, but also PlanMaker/Excel, which I use much less often). SoftMaker also has a smaller footprint, and I have found its support forums quite helpful.

Mouser, some time ago you asked whether we could think of other apps you could create that would make use of the same technology you used in WhenLast. Let me first confess that I had never used Dropbox before WhenLast. I was very impressed by how well it worked with WhenLast, so I decided to use Dropbox for another app I use a lot, JotterPadX. I have it on my tablet, my phone, and my Windows 7 computer (I have it on Windows because that's the way I had been transferring updated files between the tablet and the phone). I thought I set up all three to sync with Dropbox, but although the syncs supposedly took place, they never seemed to be reflected in the app itself, just in Dropbox. So, for example, if I update five JotterPadX files on my tablet, the files would also go to Dropbox, but I never saw them in the JotterPadX app on my phone or my desktop. Does Dropbox normally sync the files so that they appear in all the relevant apps automatically, as they do when I sync files in WhenLast? If so, then I probably set things up wrong in Dropbox when I tried to add JotterPadX. However, if this happens in WhenLast only because you created it that way and it doesn't normally happen in Dropbox, then I think you'd have lots of opportunities either to collaborate with developers of existing apps that would benefit from what you did in WhenLast, or to create apps similar to some that already exist but that lack the sync mechanism you've created for WhenLast. My guess is that I just screwed up when I tried to get JotterPadX to sync via Dropbox, but I thought I'd ask, embarrassing though it is. :-[

84
I asked myself why I was quite content with the way WhenLast looks on my phone in portrait mode, and the answer was the one you gave: reducing the amount of info shown. I realized early on that I didn't need to know what time a particular action was last performed, so my listings don't show time. As a result, even on my phone, the info never runs to five lines (as it does in the screenshot Jibz provided).

I've been very happy with WhenLast. There were a few occasions when the sync between tablet and phone wasn't complete, but those occasions were quite rare. On the whole, the app performs beautifully, and I'm finding it very useful. I'll try to think of features I'd like to see added, but offhand nothing comes to mind.

I posted a message today in a different discussion that is probably relevant here as well, since it mentions both 1Password and Dashlane:

I use LastPass on my desktop, my laptop, and my two Android devices (tablet and phone). It's free for use on computers, but to use it on devices requires a Premium subscription of $12/yr. Though there are occasional hiccups on my Android devices, on the whole it works well and, IMHO, it's well worth the $12/yr. A couple of years ago, I gave 1Password a try, but it didn't import my passwords all that well from LastPass, and it wouldn't work with my primary browser, Pale Moon, nor with the old version of Opera (12.17). So I went back to using LastPass.

I haven't used Dashlane, indeed, I hadn't heard of it until the SwiftKey keyboard I use and love (on my tablet and phone) proposed possible integration with Dashlane. I didn't try it out, since it was more expensive than LastPass. (I think SwiftKey is looking into possible integration with several password managers, including LastPass, but all this is just at the "proposed" stage. The only one available for actual testing with SwiftKey at the moment is Dashlane.)

Curt, all four of my browsers (Pale Moon 25.4, Firefox 37.0.2, Opera 12.17, and IE 11) had no problem with the non-https URL. Both Pale Moon and Firefox presented a much truncated version of the https version, after first going to a very limited version of the Gizmo home page. Opera had no problem with the https version. IE balked at the https version, claiming it was showing only secure elements. When I told it to show all elements, it showed the same normal version that Opera showed, though according to WinPatrol, it also installed an additional ActiveX component.

I live in a one-story house, so I can't do much damage throwing something out the window. :)

Living Room / Re: New Virus or ??
« on: May 10, 2015, 11:18 AM »
The Malwarebytes blog focused on Rombertik a few days ago: https://blog.malwarebytes.org/security-threat/2015/05/whats-important-about-rombertik/. Interestingly, the blog claims "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware detects Rombertik as Trojan.Ransom.ED." It might be useful to post something about the user's experience described here (i.e., in the DC thread) on the Malwarebytes forum and try to get them involved. The company tends to take very seriously any report of MBAM's failure to detect/deal with malware.

Just turn off auto update checking, it's the second checkbox on the topmost Options tab.
Duh...thanks! :-[

no, you can skip this update.
Is there a way to stop the big announcement of this latest version appearing each time I reboot the computer, or can I only stop it by installing the update that I don't need?

v1.145.01 - Apr 22, 2015
 • [BugFix] On bootup, a docked launchbar was occasionally docked off screen and could only be restored by Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L emergency hotkey.

If you never experienced this problem, count yourself lucky -- I have and it's a real annoyance. Hopefully this will fix it. (It only happened when program is scheduled to run at bootup time).
Mouser, I've never experienced this problem (LBC starts at startup, but I don't use a docked launchbar, just an icon in my system tray that I can click on to see the entire range of major nodes). Is there any reason for me to install the upgrade?

Yes, I too was VERY disappointed to read the news. The PM browser meets my needs better than any other I've tried, and I've tried probably half a dozen. However, Moonchild (the PM developer) has said he plans to release one more update for PM4A, and he thinks it should extend PM4A's use for quite a while. So for now I'll continue to use PM. However, I've also started to think about what to replace PM with when the time comes. My current thinking is the Dolphin browser. It works with LastPass, my password manager (had it not done so, that would have been a deal breaker). It renders most web sites well. It offers DuckDuckGo as one of several search engines. One feature PM offers that Dolphin apparently does not is the "Save as PDF" option; it's one I use a lot, since I can save sites as pdfs and then show them to people even if I don't have an Internet connection (my Nexus 7 tablet accesses the Internet only through wi-fi). For a while, I kept Firefox on my tablet because it has the save to pdf feature, but I wasn't happy with Firefox in other ways.

I might mention that someone on the PM forum called attention to an article about good Android browsers. It mentions neither PM nor Dolphin, but it might be useful.

Mouser, after so many years, it's hard for me to try to see DonationCoder through the eyes of a newcomer. However, I think you've done a fine job of helping people understand and navigate the site. I'd definitely recommend adding the video to the home page.

General Software Discussion / Re: pound symbol
« on: April 15, 2015, 05:57 PM »
In the past, when I've used a laptop or a netbook, there were keys in the middle of the keyboard that could be used as a number keypad if paired with the laptop or netbook's Function (Fn) key. For example, on my old Toshiba netbook, Fn+M = the keypad's 0, Fn+J=1, Fn+K=2, Fn+L=3, Fn+U=4, Fn+I=5, Fn+O=6, Fn+7=7, Fn+8=8, Fn+9=9. And so if I then hold down the ALT key and then Fn+m, Fn+j, Fn+o, and Fn+l, that would be the equivalent of ALT+0163 and it would produce a £ . Frankly, I found this a PITA, but it did work without my having to change the keyboard. However, I confess that the last time I bought a laptop, I made sure it had a regular numeric keypad, since I type a fair amount in Spanish and want to be able to use the numeric keypad to type characters like ñ, é, ¿, etc. However, if all you need is a very occasional £, it might be worth giving the Fn key method a try, assuming your laptop has one.

Android Apps / One category doesn't sync - v. 1.84
« on: March 23, 2015, 04:21 PM »
UPDATE: I posted the message below yesterday, having tried unsuccessfully several times to get the one item I mention in the message to sync. However, today I synced again, and this time everything synced, including the one that wouldn't do so yesterday. So I think the problem was short-lived.

+++++

I've been using WhenLast and loving it. Today, however, I noticed a small glitch. Most of my categories have several items, but one category has only one. The category is called Tablet and the item's label is "Unchecked permit sideloading." I sometimes install apps from outside the app store, and to do that I have to check a security setting that permits sideloading. After I've installed the app, I need to be sure I've unchecked that setting. Today, I did a manual sync between my tablet and my smartphone. The tablet a few changes. All apparently were uploaded to dropbox, but when I did the manual sync with the smartphone, all were synced except the "Unchecked permit sideloading" item. I looked at the history of syncs involving this item, and it's the same on both devices until today. I tried again to sync, first between the tablet and dropbox and then between the phone and dropbox. But that item remains unchanged. The WL date on the tablet is 03/21/2015, while that on the phone is still 02/09/2015. I can't think of anything else that might be relevant, except that the Tablet category is the fourth of four categories on the phone, but the third of four categories on the tablet. I wouldn't think that would matter, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I should add that I'm using v. 1.84 of WhenLast on my tablet running KitKat 4.4.4 and my phone running KitKat 4.4.2. If there's any other information you need, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For backing up data files in general, I recommend X-plore File Manager, a dual pane file manager that makes it very easy to copy files to and from other computers on your local network as well as backup data to various cloud services.

When I clicked on the link above for X-plore File Manager, I got a Play Store error message saying "We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server."

Your problem is that you have Android KitKat and under that you're severely limited in where apps can write to the SD card. You'd either have to keep using the system default file manager, root the device to change the external media write policy, or upgrade to Android Lollipop.
One word of caution about upgrading to Lollipop. I've been reading some of the Android Central forums, as well as some forums for specific Android apps, and there have been LOTS of complaints about Lollipop, including a number of people reporting that it rendered their tablets or phones useless. It's true that some people are happy with Lollipop, but there were so many people reporting serious problems that I decided not to upgrade when I had the chance to do so. When I say Lollipop, I'm referring to Android 5.0, 5.01, and 5.02. There are reports that 5.1 will soon be available. Given the reports on 5.0, 5.01, and 5.02, I'm planning to wait to see whether Google finally got it right with 5.1 before I install it. You might be wise to wait as well.

98
I used Opera 8.52 for a long time. I liked that it did most of what I wanted out of the box. But I noticed an intolerance to rational suggestions on the forum.
Yes, this drove me crazy. I found both the Firefox forums and the Opera forums to be filled with fan boys and trolls. The atmosphere discouraged me from even reading the messages. One of the many things I like about Pale Moon is its forum: the tone is generally polite and even friendly, and queries generally receive knowledgeable responses from informed users and from the developer, who participates quite actively.

99
AddOns become abandoned. Or you might need to wait for an update after a browser update. I understand why people might love updates and i use some in other browsers too but i will feel far more "secure" with builtin features.
-Bending_Unit (March 09, 2015, 03:46 PM)
To some extent, I agree with you. Indeed, years ago I made the same arguments in explaining to friends and colleagues my preference for Opera. The other side of the coin, however, is that with add-ons, you don't have to wait for the browser's developers to build in the features you find you need, and if your preferences don't coincide with what the browser's developers regard as important, one of the hundreds of add-on creators may come up with just what you need.

100
I too have a number of add-ons I can't do without (e.g. Lazarus, Last Pass, Linkman Fox). A browser on which I can't use Lazarus, Linkman, and Last Pass is of little use to me. Add-ons were one of the features that made me switch from Opera to Firefox, though now I'm rather disenchanted with both. Fortunately, as I became more and more frustrated with Firefox, I tried Pale Moon, and I found that I could install in Pale Moon all the add-ons I had valued in Firefox. Pale Moon is now my primary browser, though I still have Firefox (36.0.1), Opera (12.17), and IE 11, in part for testing purposes. As a software enthusiast, I often can't resist trying new programs that sound appealing, but in its present form, Vivaldi doesn't sound all that interesting to me. The good news is that it's being created by some of the folks who created Opera, which was in many ways a great browser. The bad news is that Vivaldi is being created by some of the folks who created Opera, who stubbornly resisted add-ons. Of course, Opera had many features built in that were possible in other browsers only via add-ons, and perhaps the Vivaldi team will apply some of that same ingenuity to the new browser.
