General Software Discussion / mapping media keys on old keyboard
« on: October 24, 2009, 02:08 PM »
Recently my logitech wireless keyboard died on me, so I had to get a different one, but rather than buy a new one, I just found an old compaq keyboard that came with an old xp home edition computer. the compaq kb-0133.
media keys.JPG
These are the media keys that are on the top of it
keyboard.JPG
I can't find any drivers for the media keys, and I don't know what the physical name of the keys are, so I can't map them in the registry.
I used to have the media keys on my logitech keyboard mapped to auto hotkey shortcuts, but since I don't know the name of the keys on this keyboard, I can't do that.
When I push the keys, nothing happens. I do know however, that windows (xp x64) knows that the keys are there, because I was playing Assassin's Creed, and during one of the cut scenes, I got bored, so I started to push the media keys randomly. This caused the camera angle to change.

So what I am wondering is if anyone knows how I can get these keys to work to my advantage under windows xp 64 bit?

edit:sorry about the craptacular images. (I can't seem to hold a camera still right now)

edit2: Autohotkey rocks! I just found out how to use the keyboard hook to figure out what the keys are. I have successfully mapped the key all teh way to the left to make a message box pop up. I just have to use SC### for the keys. EX. the left most key is SC123.

lol, yeah, thats why I said I don't know if money was an issue. on my desktop I just use avira, and I use an AV by microsoft on my laptop, so I can't really be of much help.

edit: and the post title did say commercial use allowed...

Reminds me of the case where MS got chewed out for putting xml (I think that was what it was) support in their MS Office without permission.

Dang, I didn't get on the dc forums yesterday, I'm too late. I so wanted to type in all caps and not get flamed for it.  :(

I don't really know your setup, or if money is an issue, but you could use a sonicwall. Though, it kind of conflicts with your ubuntu server. Sonicwalls have antivirus built into them, and if you try to download something that is infected, it will block access and alert you that the file is infected. Also, I don't know if it would be useful to you, but sonicwalls also have a content filter. I don't work for sonicwall, so this isn't a plug for them, but my brother is a reseller for them, so we have one at home.

General Software Discussion / Re: Worst Win7 reviews (ongoing)

Press Windows-Tab, and you get Vista's fancy 3D task switcher, which pointlessly requires you to cycle through tasks one by one. This duplicates the functionality of Alt-Tab instead of enabling you to get to any task in a couple of clicks, as Apple's similar Exposé does.
Did the reviewer try clicking on one of the windows? You don't have to scroll through the windows to the one you want to activate.

General Software Discussion / Re: dell laptop, vista won't activate
« on: October 19, 2009, 10:13 AM »
Sadly, Im not. I purchased my laptop before the free upgrade was offered. :(

Not that I'd ever, ever advocate such a thing, but historically speaking, in a matter of hours after OEM OS upgrades are delivered to consumers ISO images of said upgrades start appearing all over the internet & people who have BIOSes like yours that will activate the latest OS only have to install these ISOs to enjoy something for free.

But whether or not you do something like that is something you & your moral compass will need to discuss.
lol, I was trying to avoid going down that road. Though it is defiantly a possibility.

So that I don't have to go through all this mess again, I made an image of my drive with acronis after it was all set up and activated.

That, my friend, was a wise decision. Activation works for most people in most situations. You, unfortunately, were one of the individuals who did not fall into that group. Glad you got it sorted & hopefully you won't have to revisit this topic when they send you your OEM Windows 7 disc (if you're entitled to one).

Never hurts to ask. Worst they can do is say no & I have seen companies in the past issue upgrades to customers who couldn't get the current release to work. If his BIOS allows activation of an OEM Win 7 copy like he says then his machine can't be that old.
my laptop is only a couple of months old. I'm not 100% sure that it will activate an oem 7. The bios upgrade just said it would, but since it won't activate vista, I don't know if it would work with 7... though I don't know jack about oem activation.

On a side note, I installed vista with a plain old vista oem disk that my brother got from his work's action pack (but used the key on my laptop, not the key from the action pack). It wouldn't activate over the internet, but after calling MS twice, I got it activated over the phone. (the first time I called, the guy said something about not being able to help me at the time and to call back in 15 min. But I called back right after hanging up, and got vista activated with no problems... other than barely being able to understand his accent)
So that I don't have to go through all this mess again, I made an image of my drive with acronis after it was all set up and activated.

General Software Discussion / Re: Who should judge Win7's success?
« on: October 14, 2009, 10:40 AM »
personally I would think that you should just use 7 yourself, and not bother with what other people have to say. Different people like different things. One person might love 7, while another person can't stand it. the best option is to just try it and see if it is right for you.

Living Room / Re: Can someone remind me why are we using email ?
« on: October 14, 2009, 10:29 AM »
lol, I guess for really large amounts of data, sure, that might work. But I wouldn't stop using email and the internet for small things. You could send a simple email and it would get there faster than a bird, at least as long as the email provider doesn't have a fubar server.

I have been messing with the windows 7 RC, and I have found it to be a lot better than vista.

I actually checked that to see if it would help, and when I did, I had the newest bios installed on my laptop. It was supposed to enable dell oem 7 to pre-activate. I updated not to long ago, so I figured there wouldn't be a newer version out. So I figured that wasn't really the problem.

Fortunately for you DonationCoder is inhabited by a tenacious & stubborn bunch. If there's any way to solve your problem someone will be there till it does.
lol, yeah and if they can't they can at least be sure that I have learned something, because I have learned a lot from this topic.

I just got my replacement cds today, so I am fixing to install vista with the new disk and see how it goes.

edit-during install: One thing I have noticed so far, is this disk supports more languages than my old disk...

edit-post install: I have come to the conclusion that my laptop just hates vista, and I wasted my time filling out that replacement disk form. My stupid laptop still wont pre-activate vista.

You could try https://support.dell...are/en/backupcd_form

This will give you a system restore set (for US customers AFAICS) of the originally supplied operating system (which is presumably Vista on your system since you had a free downgrade to XP).

OK it is not a vanilla Windows disc but from a thread I read it appears it is a free service in the US (and delivered within a few days) and at least it should be pre-activated.
Yeah, I did that a day or two ago. I'm now waiting for my new disks to arrive and see if it solves my problem.

The key on the computer will work with any (real) Vista disc though wont it? If nite_monkey can get ahold of a new disc he should be able to use the key to install Vista on the computer and successfully activate it, right?

Yes, that is possible. My friend has a dell desktop that came with xp media center, and he has problems with loosing things, so he couldn't find his recovery media. Luckily my brother works at a repair shop that has the microsoft action pack (whatever it is called) so he had a regular copy of the media center that we used with the dell key on my friend's computer.

On a side note, I contacted dell and got them to send me new cds for my laptop (at least I think I did, I used the online request form and got an email from dell). So as soon as the new disks arrive, I will see if this new vista disk will work, or if I will just have to stick with xp.

thats weird. I was never told to backup my recovery partition when I turned on my pc.

I guess I will have to go call dell now and see if I can a replacement disk.

lol, I've been putting off calling microsoft, because I don't want to do that. I've kind of just decided to go back to xp until I can find a different true dell oem vista or 7 disk and see if it will activate. I just wish I knew why my vista disk wont activate.

One more question, is it possible to somehow get the recovery partition back? (I deleted it, and never made a backup of it, and was curious to see if that would give me an activated vista install)

Well I had the recovery partition... but it got removed (by me). I have also tried a different dell oem vista disk but it wasn't activated at startup either, so I dunno what the deal is. What is strange tho is that my xp disk does activate autimaticaly.

I'm not certain, but I would think there would always be a phone activation option (what if you didn't have internet access?). If all else fails disconnect from the internet (turn off the Wi-Fi if you can) and try activating again. Windows should give you the phone option when it figures out that there isn't an internet connection available.
I may have to try that and see if it works
Usually after you say the activation code you'll be connected with an operator who will ask a single question which is something like "onto how many computers is this copy of Windows installed?". You just tell them how many (it should be just one of course) and they'll give you a new code to type into the comp. It almost always takes between six and seven minutes.
Eew, thats the part I don't like. The person is usually Chinese(or Japanese I don't know which) and I can't really understand what they are saying very well.

but it only popped up the vista troubleshoot box with random garbage in it

Ooooo...now THAT does sound like either a bad install or a bum disk. :tellme:

Try doing another installation first and see if that clears things up. If it doesn't, something is probably wrong with your media.

Anyway, try starting with <*choke*> Dell's Support. (I know, I know. I feel your pain. ;)) But look at it this way: if it turns out you do need a need a replacement Vista CD, Dell is the only one that will be able to ship you one without your having to pay for it.

----

+1 with Hirudan BTW. Microsoft takes a lot of heat for their Genuine Advantage and activation policies. But so far (knock wood) I've done phone activations dozens of times and have always found the Microsoft reps to be efficient and helpful.

Luck & let us know how you make out.

oh joy, I may have an effed up disk then. I've installed vista three times now with this disk (on the same computer, all three times not being able to activate)

edit:well I just got the phone option(after I typed in the key on the bottom of the laptop) I wish I didn't have to do this, but oh well I will see what happens I guess

This was the first time the cd had been used. (I even had the break the sticker that sealed the cd sleeve)
We were thinking that the cd was a bum cd in that it didn't have the oem certificate loaded on it or something.

I did try clicking on the contact dell support button when it refused to activate after I typed in the key on the bottom of the laptop, but it only popped up the vista troubleshoot box with random garbage in it that didn't even relate to activation problems (I guess it was the troubleshoot box... it was a help box thing, whatever) I don't know if I did that right. I will see if I can follow the onscreen contact information and see if that does anything.
