IMO, what you are describing is InfoQube: www.sqlnotes.net

I'm the designer/author

102
- I'll look into .ics subscription
- csv import was fixed about 1 month ago
- exporting can be done in many ways: to Excel, select>copy->paste, XML, live links. More ways here: http://www.sqlnotes..../index.php?q=node/55

103
I'm finishing up the calendar (outlook-style, grid-style is already implemented). If it is "requested", I could do it immediately after that  ;)

104
Yes, each grid can include a Gantt and you can set which date fields to display. You can also choose the horizontal scale from minutes to months

105
>-52 weeks (rather than months)

Isn't that basically what the Gantt does for you? (which IQ already has)

106
What do the bar colors represent? Coming up with something like this:
YvwLarge1.jpg
Should be quite easy.

107
I am looking for a software that would let me input tasks-events-projects. I know any calendar app can do this. But what I am looking for is to be able to visualize this data set in different ways. Many calendar apps can only do daily-weekly or monthly which does not serve my need. I am looking for something that can also show as gant charts or yearly timeline etc. At the moment I am using Gantt project and Lighting(mozilla). The main problem I have with Gantt project is that it does not support .ics calendar format(import or export) so I need to enter data multiple times in multiple applications. I use tracking software to track my time on projects. I can export the data from tracking app as .ics but Gantt project does not import any .ics calendar :(

What is missing in InfoQube to fill your requirements? Perhaps, I could add it quickly...

What's the Best? / Re: What's the best Journal (Diary) software?
« on: January 05, 2009, 09:07 PM »
FWIW, InfoQube can be used as a powerful Journal (Diary) software. It supports multiple entries per day, easy navigation, filtering by day, week, month, etc, custom sorting and can combine multiple entries into a single output optionally with collapsable buttons to show/hide each post.

All content is saved in HTML format (in an encrypted JET4 database format and/or as individual HTML files [and desktop search friendly]). Supports copy/paste, has a decent FF clipping extension and XML exports. MSWord can create a live link to your IQ database. Editing is done using the build-in WYSIWYG editor or transparently using MSWord or free BlockNote.

Details here: www.sqlnotes.net and www.sqlnotes.net/drupal5 for the community web site

Just my 2cents

I'm the designer.

I have started using AVAST - happy with it. Light on resources and seems to do the job.

Same here. Been using it for >2 years. No problem. Switched from AVG as it once messed up a bunch of file (or at least that's what I thought), plus AVG insisted on scanning Outlook Express emails each time they are viewed, so it slows down browsing too much (3 years ago it was that way anyway, nowadays I have no idea). Avast only scans when the email is received.

Does SqlNotes have this kind of calendar view?

This type of yearly view is not implemented nor planned. Only Gantt-type is available (linear horizontal time scale)

p.s. If someone can find me a component that allows this type of view, I'll gladly implement it

There is now InfoQube (www.sqlnotes.net) which seems to do exactly what you want (and more)

Free while in beta (very stable beta)

I'm the designer of InfoQube

Interesting...

Do you have (or can you supply) a comparison with :

1- free Microsoft script control (msscript.ocx) or,
2- free languages DLLs such as LUA ?

Hi MarkMark (single poster...)

I'm glad to hear this (do you have a web site where I can see your product?).

Did you get a special version from them? The last official version includes documentation for many features that are not implemented. I know for fact that the last version does not have a functional histogram (I use the unicode activeX)...

What is puzzling about how this company works, is they seem to have many newer versions completed, but they don't release them. 1 year ago, I was sent a private version, with the mention to hold onto it, as it would be a while before the official versions would reach this private one. It sure was, 1 year later and 12 official versions later (1 per month approx), it is still behind this "private version".

I use numerous other components, and have never seen this way of doing. It seems to be way more work, than simply keeping 1 version. The only reason I can see for this, is the lucrative licence renewals... but ethically, especially considering that the web site promises features not implemented in the official version, ethically, this is not "clean"... IMHO of course.

That said, their products are technically excellent, top of their class

Living Room / Form z-order when showing modeless form
« on: December 03, 2008, 09:33 AM »
I couldn't find a forum specifically devoted to coding, so I'm posting here...

I've got a VB app (main form) and want to show a modeless form. No problem. I used .Show vbmodeless,MainForm

Now, when my app does not have the focus, and the code is run to open the form, the form opens correctly, but also brings up the main form. I want the main form to stay in its current z-order, and only show the modeless one.

I can trick it with making the main form invisible, but it isn't quite what I want, as it still messes up the Windows zorder of its windows.

Any ideas?

But this is a pure VB6 solution. You use VB.net, to help you create the manifest file, nothing else. You could create the manifest file yourself by hand, but it is a lot of work...

Once you have your manifest file, copy all referenced DLL / OCX, the .exe and the manifest file to a folder. The .exe will run!

You can manually edit the manifest file to change paths of the DLLs/OCXs. You can check out the portable version of InfoQube for an example of this. http://www.sqlnotes.net

(...) And since he doesn't use infoqube, excel is the simplest way to do this.  So I made a really cool Excel spreadsheet where everyone lists their projects with a drop-down box for a status, and all these projects get listed in a master sheet for the supervisor to look over.  It works really well and was kind of a pain to do (since it really should be done in access or using VBA, neither of which I know).

So there's my update.  Personally speaking, the simplest solution to this is InfoQube, especially if it's just for one person and not meant to be shared between several people.  Even then, I think InfoQUbe could do it, but you'd have to convince all the other users to use it and buy it and etc...you know how that goes.

For the record, a really neat feature of InfoQube, which hasn't been discussed much yet, is that you can have Excel "read" IQ data live. So you create an excel file, create a link to the project grid, save it and send this file to your co-workers / boss. When they open your Excel file, they'll see your project information, not an (outdated) copy, but the current one. They won't be able to edit the data (they'd need IQ for this), but this is a neat reporting tool.

118
Another interesting way to get away of the DLL issues on your VB6 apps is to open it in VB.Net. You then get a list of references. If you then select each of these references, you can, in the properties pane, set that you want to use a local copy. Compiling your app will generate a manifest file (even if the compile fails, which it will inevitably)

With this manifest file you can set up a totally portable app in XP and Vista. No installation and no DLL hell.

More details can be provided if desired

it's probably the same old tactic of coming back some weeks later to edit the post and make it point to the product they want to spam.

@Mouser: Could the post editing be time limited? I makes sense to allow editing for 1-2 hours after posting, but why should we be allowed to edit posts that are 1 week old, or more? Some sites don't allow editing, you post it, it is there...

I appreciate the possibility to edit posts, but it could be limited in time.. after all subsequent posts are responses to that post, not an edited (possibly totally different) one.

Just my 2 cents

I've been using eXontrol controls for InfoQube, specifically the exG2antt (Grid-Gantt) for many years. It is full featured and affordable.

http://www.exontrol.com
http://www.exontrol.com/exg2antt.jsp

Are you satisfied of:
- the products
- the service

In the past, I would get first class service, and bugs were quickly fixed. The last 2 years have unfortunately been a totally different experience. Bugs are not fixed, the developer, Mihai, is implementing lots of stuff like transparencies, skins and other "visuals", but neglecting more basic stuff.

My biggest grief, is that many features advertised on their web site are simply not implemented. Worst, some are implemented in the demo but not in the released products.

Email exchange with him indicates that it will be 6-12 months before the features advertised on the web site are implemented. In my 20+ years of consulting / software designer, I've never seen such an "interesting" way of doing business.

Needless to say, the relationship has turned a bit sour lately... I'm a very patient and perseverant person, but there are limits. Some features were advertised 12 months ago... and still not implemented (histogram is one example, but there are many more)

Comments anyone?

If the drop-down has too many entries, you can switch to a fixed list (uncheck Auto-list and enter your own list).

Also, I can code for having auto-list drop-down showing only values in the current grid...

Is there a quicker way to refresh the grid?

F5 will refresh the grid (manual refresh is currently required)

You did the correct thing (copying to a file was not required, as you can solely work from the clipboard)

However, fields are not created when pasting XML (they will eventually), so you need to create your fields and grids in the destination database first, and then paste

I'll add to armando excellent post, that you can use the Journal Grid. You can use the DateFilter toolbar to show all items created on a specified day, week, month. It is useful to find items.

Once you've found your items, you can examine the filled fields and determine why they are not shown in the problematic grid

Egh...ok, Pierre, I definitely didn't think about all those scenarios you described and I can see how the behavior is useful.  On the other hand, I probably agree with Armando that perhaps the "ecco" way may not be the best way for default behavior, or not the most intuitive.  But I really haven't thought it through enough to really have an opinion, especially once you bring up all those scenarios.

Jim, don't be afraid of it, though, whether you understand the program or not, it's still usable.  Actually, don't even bother learning more than you need to.

So, Pierre, regarding my problem, the issue for me is not the source/grids/checkbox thing.  To be more accurate, my real problem is that I have a grid open that shows a bunch of items.  I highlight all the items and export it to Excel.  I expect to see all those items in Excel, naturally.  So, like you said before, the exporting is the one that needs to be fixed.  How you do the source/parent thing is fine with me, either way.

So, you see, Jim?  I don't need to understand how the filtering works if I don't need to, when the real problem is that the Excel export doesn't work intuitively.

(Nice post above Armando.  Yes, good documentation is going to be a challenge for Pierre, there's so much to cover!)

In the next version, I'll display an msgbox when exporting to Excel:
1- Export all grid items
2- Export selected items
3- Export items that meet the grid criteria
4- Cancel

Expect his version tomorrow, with the brand new FF Extension, which will ease web clippings
