Living Room / Re: A NAS server for my home
« on: December 09, 2010, 07:03 AM »
I am clearly out of my depth here with all your solutions  :-[

So if I need my NAS solution to be able to stream videos, music & photographs to PCs, laptops, Xbox 360, PS3 (or yeah and perform backups), what protocols to I need to watch out for?  I see terms such as SMB, UPnP, DLNA, DAAP being mentioned by you, is there anything else that I should ensure whatever I buy supports it?

Thanks again.

Thank you all for your input.

I prefer the idea of a having my own harddrives solution rather than the idea of PogoPlug (but isn't that a cunning solution?).

Another consideration I have is power consumption, I don't want to have something that chews up power!

The next problem I have is how to convince my wife that I need to buy one   ;)

Living Room / A NAS server for my home
« on: December 06, 2010, 06:47 AM »
Hi,

I was thinking of buying a NAS for at home but I've no experience with them and I'm looking for advice.

I'll give you some background on my needs:

I have a video, music and photograph collection that I would like to be able to share at home with my family (2 PCs,  three laptops and a smartphone).  I'd also like to be able to access the NAS from the internet (read/write).  I don't have eSATA or USB 3.0.

Ideally I'd like one that has 2GB+ storage.  ON my first search I came across this product from Seagate: http://www.seagate.c.../desktop-hard-drive/

If anybody has advice of what to buy (or look out for), I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Screenshot Captor / Whitespace around images with added borders
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:59 AM »
If I add a border to an image it seems to add a lot of "whitespace" around the image.  Could this be made a bit more lean?  I have attached an image of my preferences and added a border to show the excess space (in particular the left and top of the image).

I also discovered that when I had the preferences screen open and clicked Capture-> Capture Image of Screenshot Window, beneath the name field at the bottom of the main screenshot capture screen, I got details relating to an Internet session I had open. Even after I had completely closed Internet Explorer and tried the same thing again, the same details are being recorded.  Having said that I don't really use that field so it's not much of an issue for me - just an observation.

A work around like that will do me just fine until you find the time to fix it - thanks.

Screenshot Captor / Splicing problem?
« on: October 14, 2010, 04:32 AM »
Firstly, let me start with saying the newly added splice functionality is great and I use it more than I thought I would have use for!

However, if you highlight an area and subsequently splice the image to remove part of it, the highlight object stays the original size. I'm not sure if this is by design or an oversight?

Screenshot Captor / Possible issue with Expand Canvas to Fit Objects
« on: October 14, 2010, 03:46 AM »
Hi,

If I take a screenshot and add a highlight around say the very bottom of the screenshot, click Expand Canvas to Fit Objects, I still loose some detail of the surrounding border of the highlighted area where it reaches the left, bottom and right side of the screenshot.

I have attached screenshots showing the issue, the orginal image, how the image looks before I expand the canvas and then after I expand the canvas.

Living Room / Two broadband connections at the same time?
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:24 AM »
Hi,

I have 2 broadband connections in my house (both 2MB download speeds).  One is wired directly into my main PC and the other is available via a wireless router (it's mainly for online gaming).

The questions is can I use both at the same time and if so how?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question!

Thanks

Yes I like this suggestion, it looks like a much better implementation of highlighting.

Hi, I'm using XP and I have attached a screenshot of an example of my problem.  If you look at the highlighted 'Test.txt' and if I right click on it, I would expect to get the options such as Open (or Open With), Copy, Delete, Rename... but all it does when I right click is open it in the default editor I use.

I'll try this at home on Windows 7 and see how it behaves.

LaunchBar Commander / Right click context menu not working
« on: August 20, 2010, 05:24 AM »
Hi Mouser,

Let me start of by thanking you for the screen casts for Launchbar Commander and I'm now busy experimenting with the various options.

My problem is, I can't get the right click context menu to work on any of the contents in my folders or menus, instead of getting the standard right click options it just opens the item. What am I doing wrong?

Additionally, if I use the option to display the contents of a folder, file names beginning with an underscore are at the end, whereas I would have expected them to be at the beginning.  Other applications/utilities like Excel, Directory Opus, File Manager all sort those names with an underscore to the start.

Thanks

LaunchBar Commander / Re: How to launch iTunes from LCB?
« on: July 28, 2010, 06:44 AM »
Well you learn something new everyday.  Your suggestion about the drag 'n drop just solved a problem I had for a few months with trying to get Oracle Enterprise Manager to launch!

Thanks

I've sent you the file.  Running the maintenance options did indeed stop the error - thanks.

Hi,

After I make a change to Launchbar Commander (v 1.112.01), I click the save button and if I click the X button on the top right of the screen I get an error (see below).  So please excuse my ignorance, but how do I close the preferences so that LB returns back to the system tray?

It would also be nice to see the busy mousepointer when saving.

Screenshot Captor / New option for after making a selection
« on: May 21, 2010, 04:56 AM »
Hi Mouser,

I find myself in need of a new option after making a selection in an existing image.  Can you please add an option to copy the current selection to the clipboard?

At the moment I make the selection, click File --> Create New File From Region, then click on the new image, select it and copy it to the clipboard.

I have taken a large number of screenshots that I need to this on and it would be faster to just copy the selection to clipboard.  In case you are wondering I don't want to 'destroy' the original images.

Thanks

Hi Mouser,

Your main LaunchBar download page only has a link to version 1.10.01 or am I going (more) crazy?

Living Room / Re: Advice of Media Player/Center
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:34 AM »
I've heard good things about the Acer Revo 3610 so this is currently top of my list.  From reviews it seems to be able to handle 1080P without much trouble.

For those who are interested, take a look at this Acer Revo 3610 review.

Living Room / Advice of Media Player/Center
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:03 AM »
Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting a Media Player/Center and I'd like the following capabilities (I'm a little unsure of some terminology), but keeping the price to < €400.

HD enabled
Play all the latest video/music formats
Ability to stream content from web sites
Wireless streaming
It can be just one unit or the storage can be separate

I was thinking of something like the Iomega ScreenPlay Director:

Iomega Screenplay Director

Do any of you have experience with Media Players/Centres as I'd appreciate your input before I purchase.

Many thanks.

Damian
