Living Room / Re: 2007: My 'Best of' list
« on: December 26, 2007, 03:10 PM »
Thanks. Where's yours?  :P
ahhhh,
Nosh throws down the gauntlet  :)

I've actually been thinking a bit about that since reading your post
and while you havent a chance of a best of 2007 from me (one year always merges into the next :-\)

I can actually say the best book I've read this year
but unfortunately it hasnt been translated into english yet but here it is for anyone in german
Ich bin dann mal weg. Meine Reise auf dem Jakobsweg
by Hape Kerkeling, currently one of the most famous comedians in germany - this reasonably "serious" book though, if a bit surreal at times, about him walking from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compestella (Lashiec-Land I believe) in Galicia

actually after looking at a list of all films released here (germany) in 2007, of the ones I've seen, the highlight for me was:

Full Metal Village
which is actually a very low-key documentary (made by a south Korean woman Sung Hyung Cho) about a huge heavy metal festival in a very small village in north Germany
Probably well worth seeing subtitled as well, but remember, fairly lowkey in spite of the odd blast of heavy metal!

Best software discovered:
will have to be shared between Filehamster (backup/versioning) & SQL-Notes (organiser/database/notetaker on steroids - which is looking for a new name if anyone has ideas)

howzat :P

I love Enhanced Dialogue but have long since removed it. Why? Because its mere presence on my computer (ie even when installed but disabled) renders 16-bit application open/save dialogues from appearing  :(

Otherwise it is my favourite dialogue enhancement tool and my favourite Stardock app. Like Jim, Enhanced Dialogue survived all of my Stardock purges, until the last one. Now I'm Stardock free...

it's a wonder no-one else has tried to produce something similar (I mean something very similar!)

[edit] even I (stingy $%&467 that I am) would fork out for something like that :)

sounds good

limitations:
"Please Note: This product must be purchased with hardware."
(or do they just say that to cover themselves?)

basically no international (outside US) delivery (unless you want to buy over $1000 worth of stuff :))

PS shipping cost in US is 8.90, still a bargain

well, looks like the first post is continually updated - "Last Updated: Wednesday, December 16, 2007"

it's nice to see other info too like
how to calibrate & clean (including recommendations for calibration equipment)
and post-purchase info that you rarely see in reviews
also examples of models where manufacturers have used good display on initial release & swapping with inferior later

:) it really is super

General Software Discussion / Re: internet information manager...
« on: December 23, 2007, 08:12 AM »
do onenote and evernote save the time of capturing text?

Surfulater would do that too
Advantage of Evernote (paid version) would be you can search text in images.
Also, Surfulater doesnt work well with Opera (does anything?)

EDIT For a lot of info I would still favour Surfulater, but read up about how they store/manage stuff - it's probably a personal preference...

Surfulater, I actually prefer it to Evernote for managing web stuff, Bookmarks or saved/excerpts of pages
I like that you can  organise in tree/folders and it is very actively developed

there currently a xmas discount and
there a new (better) discount for DC members in January

Living Room / Re: 'We'd be better off if women ran everything'
« on: December 22, 2007, 08:44 AM »
good read all right (the article I mean), anyone read the Naked Woman one?
Sounds (to me) like he gives too much importance to "Art" in the big scheme of things, or maybe I'm just cynical having being through four years of art-school myself

About women in politics - sometimes they end up being worse than the men (e.g. Maggie Thatcher) maybe from having to prove themselves even more than the men :-\. Often they seem no different, but if there were more women than men would be interesting to see.
Not really sure how Angela Merkel (German "Chancellor") fits in there, no difference I can see (less vain than the last one though!)

Maybe related:
I think I told you (Mike) about a book I read years ago -
Daughters of Copper Women based on the myths of the "elder women of the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation on Vancouver Island BC Canada"

It's written, I suspect, from a feminist perspective (which, when it was written -1981- pretty much meant anti-men )
but, after telling how the world was formed (not very complimentary to men, the first of whom grows out of the womans snot ;D) describes society up until the "white" (Spanish I think) people came.
Which society was, yes, more or less run by the women.
Seemed a quite successful & peaceful society till the white came - some very funny descriptions then of the interactions with the Spanish, in particular with the religious/priests who basically had the piss taken out of them big time

one free webmail here (Germany - web.de) offers faxing but I've never used the faxing bits
so that's probably not much help
but

this is must have been meant to be a joke played on software sites that accepts submission for just about anything.. check out the author's note here.

oh noo, it's ART :tellme:

Edit: even stranger, "found art" - they dont seem to know whodunit

10168
or maybe not -
it shows software as installed but still doesnt find any updates, maybe the update isnt available to google... :-\

it picked up on my acrobat reader install & cant find an (available) update for that either, but that could be because it's a stipped down version that's already installed... so no solutions here at any rate

10169
forgot to say if I go to "Installed Software" tab & select "Recent Activity" -
it shows Star Office 8 and install date but it still doesnt show it on the "Installed Software" tab

okay, just sorted it
see
http://www.google.co...&hl=en&gl=us

1. Open the Google Updater, and select the "Preferences" tab.
2. Click "Advanced Options" if this section is hidden.
3. Check "Update all software available in the Google Pack" to keep all Google Pack software up-to-date, or un-check it to keep only Google software updated. Please note that by un-checking this box, you also turn off notifications for new third-party software.
4. Click the "Save Preferences" button.
-
I checked "Update all software available in the Google Pack"

10170
Here's a link,so you don't have to fiddle with Google's Pack

http://gpdl.google.c...8.0.9189.0/setup.exe
It weighs about 143.40 MB.

I installed Star Office but dont believe I used the link in quote cause I also seem to have googleupdater installed
I know there's an update (well the programme says there is) but cant dl it directly and google updater doesnt recognise/cant find the Star Office install and I cant add it manually to google updater

not loosing any sleep :) but wondering how others who used/using google updater getting on?

Notepad Minus description
Notepad Minus - the only text editor that has less functions than the original NOTEPAD.EXE that comes with Windows
Notepad Minus is a program designed to be the only text editor that has less functions than the original NOTEPAD.EXE that comes with Windows.

It can't even save the text you wrote.

But it is small and does not require any installation  ;D ;D

can I ask before I install Brandon,
does it automatically download all the other progs or would I have a choice there too?
I'm not such a big fan of Windows Defender for example and have something equivalent already installed
(mind you I havent used it in a year or more so it may have improved..)

I notice the big "DO NOT.." on your screenshot:
would it be possible (for the benefit of people who push buttons first and read later - not me- I swear :P) to set it up so selecting one of the choices deselects the others ?
