Granted I'm working from memory here... But I seem to recall that there was a line of IoT "Smart" lightbulbs that could be controlled wirelessly available in most hardware stores.

I could be completely off my nut - But I could swear that I ran across these once awhile back.

I set my new HP laptop with Win10 to 'no password',

Elaborate on what you did so far to accomplish that, so we know what not to suggest..  :D

Historically, that always been done using control userpasswords2 (from either run or command prompt)
I start with Desktop and go to Sign-in options.

Is a local account, or a Microsoft account?

N.A.N.Y. 2021 / Re: NANY 2021 Entry: The Lightning Bolt Quiz

For me the phrase "Situational Awareness" come to mind. This is a software/programming forum, that also just so happens to get a lot of attention (NANY) this time of year. So (to me) any discussion - in a NANY thread - should solely and only be in regard to how well any given program fits - or accomplishes - its intended purpose ... Period!

Yes, at times there can be some 'grey areas' but in the interest of respecting someone's "house" (e.g. Mouser's), I think it is generally best - at times like this - to err-on-the-side-of-caution, and keep things as technical as possible to avoid running across something - potentially... - inflammatory during a time when the audience is highly mixed...

tl;dr Never ask a cop if he wants to get high during a traffic stop, when his body cam is running... Savvy?!?

Okay, so it's definitely not my thing... But it is rather cute, and could stand to be a tad longer - Me thinks..

Maybe have a few - grayer area - questions like cheating, and kindness (good deeds subtract lightning).

There really is a lot involved in making - or breaking - one being a good person. I tried to be nice in traffic the other day and let a guy out of a side street...he got hit by a truck two lanes over. If I'd have cut him off, he'd have avoided the accident.

Shit gets tricky sometimes, ya know..?

Coworker who sees me looking at something in a browser: "Glad you're not busy; I need you to do this, this, this ..."

Coworker who sees me staring intently at a command prompt: Backs away, slowly ...

This really does work - I've used it more than a few times..

FWIW flour is potentially explosive.

And here we're separating the wheat from the ground … Well now I suppose that could chaff a bit..

...And so for the lazy but curious:

smut.
[smət]

NOUN
1.a small flake of soot or other dirt.

"all those black smuts from the engine"

synonyms: imperfection · fault · flaw · defect · deformity · discoloration · disfigurement

2.a fungal disease of grains in which parts of the ear change to black powder.

synonyms: mildew · fungus · must · moldiness · mustiness · blight · dry rot · wet rot

3.obscene or lascivious talk, writing, or pictures.

"porn, in this view, is far from being harmless smut"

synonyms: indecency · immorality · impropriety · salaciousness · smuttiness · lewdness ·

VERB
(smutted)

1.mark with flakes or soot or other dirt.

"the smutted sky"

2.infect (a plant) with smut.

"smutted wheat"

Now I still don't know how Wheat Fungus applies to a house on fire - But...I'll leave this here for other folks to figure out.

No one is saying the obvious answer.  You don't.  :o

Yeah, I kinda started there … Hence the "Bat Signal" post for help..  ;)

Re-carpet the whole room. If there is a budget for it, you can perhaps sell the re-carpetting as a "refreshing" surprise house improvement to your better half.

Or in case you have grand children, you can let them "strategically" play with messy stuff in that area en let the wife "discover". But I was reading you already have found the "volunteer" who is taking one for the team...  ;)

Or invest in a comfortable couch/guest bed and undergo her wrath.  :P

Not in the budget, not low enough to blame it on the kids (dog is a "gray area"...), and hell no.  :D

In Soviet Russia, carpet gets melted rubber out of you!

In context Siberia may be warmer than the reception getting busted would create.

For anything gooey I've always had good results with anything that contains eucalyptus oil, (wool wash, etc), plus it smells nice.

Now that is an interesting and potentially useful suggestion - especially in contrast to the rest of these clowns - are you lost or something? :)

But seriously, thanks to all for chiming in - I did get most of it out with the paint thinner so at least it isn't getting tracked all over the house anymore. Although I may take a run at the eucalyptus thing later..

Okay... Looks like blotting it with a paper towel soaked in mineral spirits got it down to a dull enough roar that I can blame on the dog...

This is a guess from my part, but I've had good luck getting goo off of things with Goo Gone. Though, I'm not sure whether or not that will eat through your carpet. So be sure to read the label.

Not quite that kind of gooey (much thinner), but kind of in the direction I was headed - which is out to the garage for paint thinner...

Can you match the carpet nap on a 3d printer? If so then scissors and print...

Um... No. But at least I'm now laughing..  :D

« on: December 06, 2020, 11:27 AM »
Greetings,
So... From the before I have to ask (or tell...) my wife … How do you get melted rubber out of carpeting?!? The rubber feet on a computer had disintegrated over time into a sticky mess, that I didn't notice until after setting in on the floor in the office leaving two (actually 6 now) sticky black rubber goo dots on the carpet that are getting tracked everywhere (pets..).

Any ideas on how to resolve (no pun intended) this issue - Preferably before I get shot.

TIA

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car

I love that song! And quite fun to listen to at speed when the suspension float matches the rhythm..

Back when I was fighting with Windows Defender eating it constantly, it was always when I hit save changes, and it bounced in and out of Temp that it got blown away. This behavior stopped when I did the original uncompressed version (that I now can't find) … But I'm not sure - I'm old, I slept since then, and I drink a bit.. :D

Granted that was a few years ago - so not the same thing - but a possible indicator of where the problem AV stuff is having could be.

fSekrit / Re: fSekrit 1.40 quarantined by Windows 10

Okay, apparently I'm an idiot... I figured out how to get the Unicode version to compile (use the other function), but it doesn't run … Just does a silent exit on load. I should probable mention at this point, that I haven't even been in MSVS (or anything else) in about 4 years … So I'm rusty as hell.

Note: I did add a line to the about dialog, that says: This build compiled by Stoic Joker - So don't blame f0dder if it breaks!

Freshly compiled, non compressed, non Unicode, v1.40 attached. Warranty implied only by DOYC - e.g. There ain't one - Savvy?.

fSekrit / Re: fSekrit 1.40 quarantined by Windows 10
« on: November 13, 2020, 07:11 AM »
Okay, correction: the regular version compiles ok on MSVS 2013, the Unicode version pitches a fit about a couple of type conversion.

I'm at work trying to peak at this quick... (eek!) ...I've got a copy of MSVS 2005 installed at home it may like a bit better.

I have to go work now (ick..).

FWIW it looks like it compiled fine for me with MSVC 2013.

I don't have a copy of the Unicode version compiled, but I could try throwing something together this weekend if that's ok with f0dder?

fSekrit / Re: fSekrit 1.40 quarantined by Windows 10
« on: November 12, 2020, 05:41 AM »
Do you have a copy of that?

I should... The question is where?

73
For the non long path related shenanigans, the other two most likely gotchas are ownership and attributes. I just ran into the - blast-from-the-past - attribute thing a week or so ago. Had a file marked read only and system that wouldn't leave until I stripped off those attributes.

fSekrit / Re: fSekrit 1.40 quarantined by Windows 10

Not sure if current issue, but I was having the same issue awhile back with the compressed version. With or without contents made no difference, but the compressed version got ate immediately. I finally compiled a fresh uncompressed copy, and haven't had an issue since.

Seems like anything packed with UPX makes AV go squirrel shit.

Just a thought..
