Facebook Requiring Government ID?
« on: October 29, 2013, 12:08 PM »
It appears that Facebook is now requiring at least some people to provide godvernment issued ID.

Fury at Facebook as login requests “Government ID” from users

Thousands of Facebook users have vented their fury at the social media site on Twitter after they were locked out of the site, and were requested to provide “Government ID” to log back in.

Similar mass lockouts have occurred on Facebook in the past, most recently in January this year. At that time, the ID request was in response to claims that users’ accounts had been hacked.

“This is just a general practice for both Facebook and Instagram to request photo IDs for verification purposes depending on what type of violation may have occurred,” Facebook said at the time.

This is the first mass lockout and ID request to have taken place since the NSA government data trawling revelations, and it seems to have outraged users to a greater extent.

At the time of publication, Facebook have not issued any public comment or confirmation.

Like? Unlike? ;)

Facebook is now claiming it was "a mistake" and has issued an apology (of sorts.)

More here.

And they had a provision in the system to check 'government issued IDs' already in place where it could be "accidentally" enabled...why exactly??

They got some explaining to do .. NSAy what?

They have it in place not just if your account gets hacked, so they can unlock it only for someone that can prove the account is theirs, but also in cases of fake names & multiple accounts under different/fake names.

According to their TOS, you are only allowed 1 account and you are supposed to use your real name. But some people create multiple accounts for spamming, game cheating, puppet accounts for harassing people, etc.

I had a friend that had 2 accounts, one for real life family & friends and the other for gaming. She didn't want to annoy her friends & family with a ton of game posts and she didn't want strangers she was adding as gaming friends to get all up in her personal business, so she made the second account to keep everything separated....and then both got locked.

Since she could only provide photo ID for the account with friends & family, she ended up permanently losing her gaming account. I had to teach her how to set up filters & lists to separate everyone and retain her privacy, while using just 1 account for everything. And even though she has it all working properly with 1 account now, she still had to start all over with all her games, and adding new gaming friends, because she lost them all and her progress in the games along with the 2nd account.

FaceBook says: We need a picture of you Driver's license to prove it's really you ... Because we don't believe hackers know about Photoshop.

Funny how there are always such seemingly innocent sounding excuses "reasons" for implementation of overreaching systems that just beg for abuse. We're just doing this to keep you safe from some faceless evil that we pasted to a stick that we take turns wiggling in the hope that it appears believable. It's no wonder that every government agency on the planet salivates at the thought of mining that treasure trove of information. Now they don't even have to get up off their asses and find people any more ... They just blink the oopsy-daisy, your account got hacked light ... And everybody is all pre-greased and Pavlovian trained to just roll over and cough up everything - for their own safety. Yeah...Bullshit.

People need to get on the stick and reflexively raise hell anytime any organization starts asking for information they really don't need.

In the godvernment API, every method requires several thousand parameters. :)

Other things?  ;D

It also looks like their BS memes are starting to go all Flannery O'Connor "Every (Meme) that rises must converge"!

"Let's require your government ID to prove it's you so that when your account gets hacked we can prove ... uh ... Oh. $hit. "

But has anyone noticed some separate train of law managed to get HIPAA info treated the way all "social media" should be treated, with tiptoes?

Can we find a way to beat these brats at their own game with something like a HIPAA violation if they keep pulling these "oops we lost your privacy settings" stunts?

Cynical jokes aside, there *are* a few sane voices trying to do something about all this, it's just they're massively outnumbered 100-1 so the best they can do is put paper mache in tidal dams!

But this one is different, because Gov IDs are the "gold standard" for when entities like to think they are "serious" about security. So you get a bunch of THOSE all mixed up in some Haxxored social media, and then someone with legit clout might wake up and do something about all this!
