Oh the hack is very real. Someone logged into my computer at about 6am and went to eBay and bought themselves $400 in iTunes giftcards and then tried to buy $200 in PlayStation giftcards from amazon.

Unfortunately, most people don't read the replies.  There's a reason that they have an aggregate review scale on most of these places.  :(
Meh, a single 1 star review, even verified, doesn't scare me. I just re-poked everyone's computers I've repaired before and requested again that they leave a review as soon as they can.

I'm a hoarder, but life tends to impose limits, so I've also come around to the idea of photographing stuff and throwing it away. I rarely regret (not yet anyways) having thrown anything away. It's nice to have the image then -- as you say, it triggers memories.

So, you want to catalogue everything else as well :-)
I like the idea of cataloging things -- I got as far as cataloging cataloging software, but not much further :D

I'm curious -- how would that be done on a website? Note, while I know basic html, I'm no a coder, nor particularly knowledgeable here -- so I guess I'm looking for an overview.
(TIA)

Please check out this already-existing SFW image board here and search for a term you are interested in. From there, click on a picture you like to see more tag details. From there you can decide if you like the artist, series, or character, and see more images based on their respective categories. It's a nice system, tagging. I think it would do wonders to help organize my life, and might be interesting to give others a shot to not only see high resolution pictures of the object itself, but help tag it as well if they know anything about the object.

Forget everything I thought I wanted. Everyone's help was greatly appreciated, but I have made the decision that my website will be a custom build of the danbooru image board software.

Living Room / Starting a new hobby - An Open Source Experiment
« on: May 24, 2016, 05:03 AM »
Greetnigs DC users,

I am going to do something I'm not aware of anyone else ever doing. I am putting everything I own online on an imageboard.

Let me explain:
I have just recently become unemployed due to some hardships, and it does not look like I will be gainfully employed for the forseeable future due to health issues.

There are a few drawbacks of being me, and they are
  • I collect everything and don't throw it away, I just hoard
  • I am very unorganized
  • I want to manage a website with an active userbase that combines all aspects of my life

Normally, I would have a hard time coming up with anything, but I decided to let my imagination run wild and give myself a fully funded budget.

There actually exists a somewhat simple solution to all my problems: An imageboard which hosts all my memories (images of things).

One of the reasons I don't throw things away is because I'll have a certain memory triggered whenever I come across it. Well if I have nice photographs of that object from multiple angles, tags related to that object, and maybe even a description of the item I wrote when I had it in my hands, what would I need that physical item for? I will literally be archiving and compressing memories into a digital trigger format.

Assuming I have all my objects, custom artwork, and posters in this database, I can quickly search "fred" and see everything related to "fred". Let's say Fred got me a cool present for my birthday, so I look it up... and then I see things related to fred which trigger other memories with fred and so on. Each time I want to fire up a memory I simply use the tags in the search engine to find and amplify any possible memories related to it.

Let's say I photograph my xbox, put it in storage, and months later find a spare controller. If I take an image of the controller and use the "x-box" tag, they will instantly be categorized together. And let's say I wrote a large X on the bucket I put the xbox in. An indicator of where in storage the xbox and related items are is in the tag information, so I can easily put things away or find them together in real life as well as online.

Or let's say I'm at a comic shop and don't know if I have a certain issue, I can look up by the series name, the publisher name, or even the issue number to see if I have it.

I will be able to show off entire collections in category form. I can show off my Pokemon collection or share the Pokemon_TCG tag to just show all my Pokemon cards.

I think this will be a fantastic and therapeutic way to deal with all my issues in one fell swoop.

Please leave any feedback below if you have any questions or concerns.

Oh yeah, obviously there will be tags that will not be public.

That's an incorrect view of wordpress.

A couple of links on just using wordpress to create static sites:

https://www.designwa...-with-optional-blog/

http://www.bloggingt...-for-non-blog-sites/

The theme that I use for my static sites is Divi.

It allows you to build your site using varied included components, custom code, and/or third party components.  I've found it very useful for such- I've not found a site I couldn't create.

Some examples can be found at http://www.elegantthemes.com/showcase/, though there are several examples if you just look for Divi example sites.
The examples in the showcase are outdated, sadly. The only one I was interested in looking at was this one:

Yet the site itself resembles nothing like that anymore. I will have to consult archive.org for closer inspection.
EDIT: YES! This is so close to what I'm looking for!

But I guess what I'm trying to understand is why create a static site anymore? What is the benefit of non-modular design?

There has to be a certain critical mass around programs IMO.  Just having programs with no descriptions on a site, and nothing around them won't lead to people using them from my experience.
Well, I mean I'd have some sort of text describing the program, but not some kind of instruction manual.

Oh! That's because it's not a Microsoft webstack. It's composed of  Apache Web Server, MySQL, PHP, Perl, Python and SOFTACULOUS. When you mentioned doing a website I forgot there are some people building them on a Microsoft host. My bad.
I'm not married to ASP.NET, but it is appealing to write the site in my native IDE. To be honest I should be learning PHP.

@40hz mentioned wikis (above). There are some quite nice websites that people have built that are basically just wikis. Wikis can be easy to set up and maintain, easy to provide a TOC (Table of Contents), easy to organise and index, and easy for the user to find their way around and read.
I've considered doing it Wiki style, and I have nothing against it. I just wanted to break some molds somehow, and I don't think a wiki would give me the "flair" I'm looking for.

.. it's quite simple to set up, there are a metric ton of themes (or you can design your own / have someone else do it, quite a few people make a living off creating WordPress themes), and there are also lots of plugins.

In my OP I do mention that I could pay someone to design my site, but I would know deep down in my heart it's not my site. I will give wordpress an honest to goodness shot somehow, maybe find a nice EC2 I can pay for a few days and if I like it transfer it onto my main server and get rid of my Azure altogether.

59
What's the difference from your perspective?
I feel a blog is a mindless template which creates little to no skill to create by it's user. It's not impressive nor has a "wow" factor but simply exists to be a voice on the internet. A blog is about it's content, not it's design.

I think Wordpress would be a pretty good choice.  It would let you focus on writing the content and not have to worry about the rest, with lots of choices for themes.
But I don't have content to write. I have code examples and programs for download, but who honestly goes through someone's portfolio to read the fine details and not just the bulletpoints? If I can't get their attention with a bullet and a screenshot, then I've already failed in my opinion.

One tool you might find very useful for evaluating various blog and CMS systems is something made by a company called Softalicious called AMMPS. It's basically a web software stack with their Softalicious installer that lets you quickly install 394 different web apps such as portals, CMS systems, blogging platforms, web discussion forums, wikis, etc. All the majors are there.
I'm not seeing ASP.NET nor PostgreSQL in there, both of which I am currently using. On my server.  :(

as far as doing your own site, the best advice I can offer is put the polish and the pizzaz on the package towards the end. As clean and professional site that is elegant in it's simplicity and clarity trumps an ooo-ah! site 7 days out of 7 IMO. Business buyers want the information quickly. So be a little careful how clever you get in the name of personalization. When in doubt KISS still rules.
I do like that advice... but I guess I really need content for my website before I can add this pizzaz. I'm just not sure how to showcase the aspects of what I've done in a career form.

60
But if you want to get down to the metal I would find a good html/css forum and pick the brains of the pros there.  If you are willing to do the html and/or css they are willing to help you get around the obstacles.  If you use a design tool then your are pretty much limited to getting help with that one tool.

One of the frustrating bits about going the html and css route is that various browsers have quirks how they interpret the markup.  Most notorious is IE.  Since Microsoft is the 800 LB gorilla you cannot say "IE is non compliant so screw IE" if you are doing web pages for a living.  :)

I'm kind of nervous about jumping into yet another forum. I've got here and StackOverflow (that double edged community though), but my problem isn't really the obstacles. I love the challenge, I just don't know what aesthetics are when it comes to web design.

I am also a stickler when it comes to cross-browser compatibility, but I do have on my site that it is "designed with Firefox in mind".

I've had this particular dilemma before, and have finally found that there is a reason that wordpress is so popular.  It just works, can be altered pretty easily to be what you want with themes and plugins, and you can get help easily.  I've recently changed to paying for ghost hosting, because wordpress is such a target, and that's the bit you exchange the commonality of it for.

But that would be my suggestion.  Go with something that is easily hackable and widespread.  Especially if it's just for personal use.

I dunno. I feel like I want a site and not a blog. I social media enough on my social medias and don't need yet another place to post updates where no one but people who has my resume will read them. Currently my site is in ASP.NET because, well, I am a .NET programmer, but the things you can do with ASP are so limited cosmetically that there's currently only one line of code that uses actual ASP.NET code in the whole friggin site. I do like the idea of a master template though.

I second Wordpress. There are entire marketplaces of themes, many are free, many are not. And if you dig into the source code, you can, of course, customize the look of Wordpress yourself.
I'll give it a shot I guess. I can't knock it until I try it. Joomla! on it's site has this cool "Try your own Joomla! server for 90 minutes" thing which was very useful in my decision to skip Joomla!. Anything like that with WordPress?

What about static site generators? https://getnikola.com/ (python) or jekyll (ruby) - plenty more here https://www.staticgen.com/
After handling my old job's static website for years, I am going to pass on any kind of static website, unless someone can prove to me they don't have to be a huge pain in the butt to update one line of code across all the files/pages.

My problems with those was the idiosyncrasies of where everything went.
This is also one of my many problems with static sites.

61
I'm going to mark this snack as done. What I coded serves my initial purposes, even if no one will use it. Bot's source is located here (Link contains no NSFW).

62
I still can't find anything solid, and Joomla! is just going to become a moneypit with all it's extensions. Anyone got any more ideas? I don't care if I need to learn a new language, but I'd like something with a little flexibility and something I can build from.

63
so, the fix is to get rid of his wife (and collect $20...)

64
I don't normally reply to my own posts, but I thought this was worth a bump. Our second work session was about to start, and I text him letting him know I will be available at the scheduled time. He tells me the day after I worked on his computer his wife downloaded a bunch of viruses on the computer and it no longer functions. Why he failed to tell me this sooner, I do not know. What a tragedy.

One other thing to be conscious of. Dropbox removed the public folder because of people's misuse, and bandwidth.  as such, I've seen it temporarily remove access.  Not sure if that's based on bandwidth or hits.  If the former, you're Ok.  If the latter...
Funny story that. I was hosting my friend's profile on my dropbox using the public links, and during some exceptionally heavy traffic, dropbox DID shut off all my public links temporarily. So yeah, first hand, I know it's a possibility.

Now the real test is to replace the image file with a different image (but same filename) and see if it updates the hotlinked image correctly.
Good call, I'll do that now!

EDIT: Nope, still my cat  :(

Try changing the zero to a one at the end of the link (?dl=1 at the end of the URL)

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I wanted!

It works in any folder.  The public folder just lets you do it for hosting.
I was wrong about what the context menu item says, but the feature is definitely there:

https://www.dropbox.com/help/167

Example of an embedded image using that link below:

Exact same URL as a hyperlink here.

Dropbox takes you to a download page. It does not allow hotlinking outside the public folder.

Dropbox was my first idea, but any accounts made after 2014 apparently no longer get a public folder.  :(

You can still right-click a file and select "Get Public Link"

But that link might change or might not work well for this particular need.
That only works for within the "public" folder, or am I missing some setting here? My friend does no have a public folder as the dropbox account was recently created.
https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/16
Note: Dropbox accounts created after October 4, 2012 will not have a Public folder.

I'm going to have to investigate this further and fix it so I can get my.... *sigh* $20.

Ouch man, that hurts.

I hate to ask ... But have you tried running sfc /scannow by chance?

I did a quick search and ran across this: http://www.winhelpon...og-empty-grayed-out/ The dialog view reset scripts look promising.
-Stoic Joker (May 16, 2016, 06:48 AM)
Always the go-to, sfc /scannow is one of the key essentials I run when something goes awry with Windows. In fact, it was one of the first things I wanted to run, but the rootkits were blocking it. So after the rootkit removal, did the scan and errors were "successfully" corrected, but the error remained.

And thank you for that link, the dialog box looks similar to what my client was getting but not exactly. This will be worth trying though, thanks!

70
Today was my first freelane job. I got it through Thumbtack, and I was so excited I won the bid. $20 to fix an error on someone's computer, slick deal right?

I had never seen such hidden rootkits before in my life, and fixing them remotely? What a royal pain. I spent six hours on the job and it's still not finished, as the original error is still present, which was what our terms for me getting paid were: to eliminate the initial error.

It's Windows Vista  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( and the error itself is one of the strangest things I've encountered in all my years as an IT guy. Basically the ability to "Open" files through their native programs fails. Windows Media Player -> File -> Open: The dialog shows but there are no folders or files, nothing in the dropdown, and unable to type in the file selection textbox. It's the same deal with Adobe Reader and any of the MS office products. The strangest thing is that if you try to open a recently opened file from a link on the dropdown menus, bypassing the file dialog, it results in an instant werfault.exe error.

I'm going to have to investigate this further and fix it so I can get my.... *sigh* $20.

Dropbox is a good idea. You could just update the file, leaving it with the same filename, and the link will remain the same.

Dropbox has been changing the way their links work, unfortunately.  So you definitely want to vet that it works if you decide to go that way.
Dropbox was my first idea, but any accounts made after 2014 apparently no longer get a public folder.  :(

WOW! Just wow, that service is amazing! Not quite a fit for my friend's needs, but I am signing up and recommending this to everyone ASAP!

A little bit more on why they need them to stay the same might help in recommending.
They are using images for a profile, and the profile will be updated frequently. Due to the site's nature, custom HTML profiles are not an option, so they are stuck using static images instead of easy to edit HTML.

For instance, I use bit.ly when I need a certain name, and point it to dropbox or massdrop or imgur, or whereever.  I'm not sure if that's a valid scenario for your friend.

That image is using a bit.ly URL to point to an imgur hosted image.
Iiiiiinteresting. I never considered using something like that. But do you have to log into bit.ly and change the image url each time it's uploaded? My friend is... not tech savvy...

Living Room / Free Image Host - Same URL, Update File
« on: May 15, 2016, 11:01 AM »
Greetings folks,

I'm looking for a free (or cheap) image host for a friend, but with what they want to use the images for they need the URLs of the files to stay the same. This eliminates most free image hosting sites I know. Any ideas on a good and reliable image host my friend can use?

Thanks!

I thought it was a great project ...(requested purpose aside)... As it's really just an online card game that could be used anywhere depending on how you skin it (no pun intended). But I know nothing of game programming so I'd be useless for anything except maybe testing if that would help.

However TBH - I was a bit reluctant to click the link at work, and I keep forgetting to check into it when I get home.
-Stoic Joker (May 12, 2016, 06:43 AM)
Cards Against Humanity clones do exist, in fact I am hosting one on a server right now with a card expansion specifically related to the Chaturbate site. However, due to the somewhat lucrative nature of the site, people do not wish to venture outside of the confines of "Chaturbate" as there is potential to expose their identities as well as the other site taking time away from the model they are viewing. It's like Las Vegas: what happens on Chaturbate stays on Chaturbate.

I had a really fancy website with a form where users to could interact with the model and fellow users. The site was up and promoted for 2 months straight, with less than a handful of people who joined and no one posted a single post. It just does not work. And also, for security purposes, you can not use external Javascript... that would make my life so much easier as already existing backend APIs exist to the official card databases in pure Javascript.

For those who would simply like to play with Javascript on the site for the pure interest of programming, Chaturbate offers a testbed server. For those who wish to emulate the testbed with multiple users, there is also a private testbed which allows you to act/post/tip as multiple users at once. I have found the private server a little more useful for deugging, but testing on the official testbed to ensure comparability.

UPDATE: Code is too large to post, but here are the rules!

Spoiler
You're a bad person. But that's okay, so are we, so let's laugh a bit, okay?

Chaturbate Against Humanity is a Cards Against Humanity clone with similar rules.

To draw a white card, a user must tip a predefined amount of tokens. The white card is always automatically drawn for the broadcaster, which you can not see.

The broadcaster can choose if the player can see the white card or not, however.

After enough users have played their white cards, the black card is drawn and a vote is cast. The choice with the most votes at the end of a predefined number of minutes wins a prize. If no votes are made when the timer goes off, the broadcaster wins by default.

Prizes and winners are listed in the setup box below the cam's viewing area.

The Setup:

Number of players - Should be obvious. Takes 2 tango, but too many is a crowd.

Tokens to Play - This is not your money maker. This is your bait. Users must pay to play, and it's the only way to win prizes.

Minimum Tokens To Vote - Just because 1 token = 1 vote doesn't mean you should get nickled to death. You can put a minimum bid on white cards by aetting the vote to something high, but not higher than the play cost.

Minutes To Vote - Depends on how full your room is and how juicy your prizes are. Shorter wait makes the game go fast but gives out more prizes.

Can Users See Their White Card - The benefit to let users see their white card: Users can essentially silent auction bid on the prize by voting for their own card using tokens. Enough people in the game, you can get a bidwar going!
The benefit to NOT let users see their white card: If users don't know which card is theirs, they blindly vote for your card or another user's card.
Allows the chance for cheapscates to play to win prizes though.

Enable Grey Play - If enabled, get this, and hear me out here, greys will be able to play the game using the "/vote" command. This allows broadcasters to ineract with the greys in some small way.
Greys are allowed 1 vote (1 token's worth) per round. This can allow the greys to break ties, as well as play in general. Good to entice them to buy tokens and participate.

Prizes - This is where the app really stands out. Up to 10 prizes using percentages and averages. A prize, like a kiss, a smile, or a thank you, should be used in the 90 percentile.
A flash, request, song change, and other smaller prizes should be in the 60 to 50 range. Videos, snapchat, kik, skype should be in the 20 to 30 range.
Password shows, custom videos, and small instant-shows should be in the 10 or less range.

Here is how the caluclation works with an example:
Kiss 90%; Flash 70%; 1 video 60%; 2 videos 40%; snapchat 30%; 5 videos 10%; Password show 1%;

When a prize is called, all the numbers are added up: 90+70+60+40+30+10+1=301

The odds of getting a kiss with this many prizes will be 90 out of 301 (90/301 or 29.9%).
The odds of getting a password show is 1 out of 301 (1/301 or 0.003% making it ULTRA RARE).

So feel free to go nuts with the prizes, you've got 10 slots to work with and you can make prizes as common or as rare as you want.
Make certain prizes ULTRA-COMMON by using the same prize in multiple slots!

Commands:
Users:
/rules - Shows the rules.
/prizes - Shows the prizes.

Boring.

Broadcaster & Mods:
/goal - You can set a countdown goal in addition to the game. Annotation is as follows:
/goal token-amount-in-digits The Title of The Goal here
For example, "/goal 1000 Bra off" will produce a message that says "A new goal of "Bra off" has been set for 1000 tokens"

/changegoal - Same as /goal, but changes the current goal title and amount

/adjust - Mistakes happen. That's probably why most of us were born. But oh well, things can be adjusted.
If someone complains they mis-voted or if they just didn't make a selection when they tipped, you can use the /adjust command.
Annotation is as follows:
/adjust number-of-votes #of-white-card reason
For example, "/adjust 100 1 User forgot to vote" will produce a message that says "The card "Card Text Here" has been adjusted by 100 votes by broadcaster for the following reason: User forgot to vote"
You can also use negative numbers for the vote amount to take away votes. Use this power responsibly.

/addcpu - Find humans to be boring? Need another player but no one is tipping? Use /addcpu to add a computer played card who will win a prize, but it goes to no one.

Broadcaster only:
/debug - You cheeky fucker, you're cheating! Debug mode shows you who has what cards, including your own. Type the command again to disable it.

To-Do List:
-Add a better multi-goal handler
-Add custom black and white cards so models don't have to copy the App's code and edit it to make their own custom decks.
-Better code management of the prizes.
-Add auto distribution of prizes such as usernames directly to the user who won without having to PM the user.
-Handle bots that assign emojis to users properly

Sad Edit: Just because you understand the game, it's rules, and how it works does not mean everyone else will. Playtesting has a 100% failure rate, no one likes the complexity and are frustrated they can't understand how it works.
