(another) Linkman Review
« on: March 23, 2010, 09:28:23 AM »
I wanted to inform you that I have put up a new review for Linkman.  I don't want to take away anything from KenR's excellent review which introduced me to the program, but I like to write reviews for software that I use a lot:

Also, as mentioned at the end of the article, stay tuned for a Linkman giveaway here soon.

Of course, Linkman is now officially part of my recommended software list:

I read the earlier posts about Powermarks and Linkman but decided to stick with Diigo (having converted from Delicious a few years ago).

After reading this review however, I gave it another try.  I love the live search.  It also makes it easier to switch browsers and still be able to add bookmarks with a keyboard shortcut (one of the reasons I switched to Diigo).  I use tags to organize all my bookmarks, but with 11,000 that's becoming less manageable.  Being able to search them all quickly is probably the best way to go.

I imported all my bookmarks and the import and search performance is impressive.  How will we find out about the free Pro licenses?  You may have a convert  :)

jaden, thank you so much for this comment.  i almost felt like no one was reading these.  I am a little embarrassed to admit how much effort I put into these reviews.

Yes, the search window is really cool and was the focus of my comments to Linkman in the past couple of years.  I'm glad I was able to express that effectively to you.  I know my review articles are a little odd in that I don't go into many of the program details.  I like to just highlight the couple of features that REALLY make the program special to me.  My intention is to do exactly what you're doing, which is generate enough interest for you to explore the program yourself.

As for the giveaway:  Linkman has donated 20 licenses, which is an enormous amount.  Whenever the next giveaway happens here, just submit your entry as usual and hopefully you will win.  I don't know exactly when that is.  Mouser will know, and there's someone else here who is in charge of the giveaway effort (it slips my mind who, right now).

I appreciate the time you spend on them and I would wager I'm not alone.

Thanks for the info on the giveaway.  I'll keep an eye out for it.

The review is very much appreciated.    More motivation to spend some time learning how to use the somewhat complex beast that is LinkMan.

Excellent.  It doesn't have to be much of a learning process at all, especially the way I use it.  All I did was import my powermarks bookmarks, changed some settings to make it behave the way I wanted in Firefox, and that's it.  I barely spent any time even organizing or doing anything with the bookmarks.  The search makes it so easy to find, I just dump everything into a big list.

We will have a new Linkman build shortly that further improves the Firefox import and has better compatibility with some of the less known browsers (e.g. Avant).

After the release of Build 30 we have received (linkman[at]outertech.com) more than 10 mails from users suggesting that a "Page changed" column should be also added to the query and search window. So we have a new build (7.9.0.32) with this feature added.

We have Build 50 with further improvements to Firefox launching. Linkman is now able to launch into existing tab/new tab/new window, without touching prefs.js at all (browser.link.open_external etc).

Thanks for the link to the Ver 8 PDF manual.  I've looked all over your new web site for it since I upgraded.

I was very impresed to find that updating to 8.x cost nothing.

Hi Folks,

Also very impressive with Linkman is how they consider each recommended improvement.  And bounce off ideas. When they recently added a little delay on the search it was a huge improvement for my usage, as I can finish typing without the search starting.

My emphasis with Linkman requests will be enhancements on reporting that will make it more PIM-like-friendly, especially a single-line output (truncate description to fit page) mode.  Also that the sort lines up to the current view sort.  Right now I am still using screen capture for printing.  Then I would probably use the user-defined fields as well, which have some extra potential.

And I can imagine perhaps a smidgen of quick syntax help on the search might be helpful  .. occasionally I print out the help page but then it goes under the rubble.  The old Boolean Shuffle, involving starts with, not, and etc.  Maybe even one of those Eudora-like search things from a pop-up ?

My other thought is more complex, having to do with "on-disk" functionality, where web pages are copied to your disk and a link added to point to that new page.  (Think Scrapbook, Surfalator etc.)  The idea needs some refinement and expression, (I think the generic Firefox "Save Page as" is sufficient conceptually) but I think it has great archiving capability, against the one bane of web pages, those that disappear, and are not on archive.org.  From my point of understanding, this is mostly the text and basics, not the flash and pomp.  Make any sense ?

Shalom,
Steven Avery

I too have been impressed with the Linkman team's responsiveness.  I've given them feedback on at least a half dozen minor issues I've encountered and within an hour or two they reply either asking for clarification or to say the fix will be in the next build.  It's a great app and by listening to feedback it will continue to get even better.

Just to make sure you won't stop writing reviews (:D), let me chime in and say that just because of your review I'm going to give Linkman (light) a try. Thanks for pointing it out.
