As most people agree my skills at naming programs are, to put it most charitably.. uneven. I promised recently that i wouldn't try to name programs any more without getting suggestions first. So I have a new program which will be my submission to the NANY 2008 programmingchallenge. I should actually have a beta version available for testing in the next couple of days for anyone who is interested. The current *working* title for this program is "Points Into Presents".Screenshot: What it is: It's a motivational program.. You can create (and share with others) lists of activities and assign them points. Then when you perform an activity you indicate that and it gets logged, and you get the points associated with that. There is also a "rewards" section where you can "buy" things with your earned points. So a student might set up various activities like homework, reading a book, writing a paper, with various points. Maybe a parent would set up the point system and promise certain rewards, etc.
So, what would be a good final title? Another possible name i thought of: PointShop

I kind of like the name you have for it already...except I would tweak it just a tiny bit and call it Points to Presents.

First off, I'd love to test this, mouser! I think it sounds like a great idea, and certainly a great companion to app's InstantBoss As for name suggestions, here's a few (mostly based on the motivation aspect): Motivator / Motivatr MotiPoints Mousetivator Motiward PresentPoint / PresentPoints (much like working title but a bit more catchy maybe?) RewardME And a follow-up to app's suggestion: Points2Presents OK, so I might not be better at coming up with names than mouser, but I sorta like MotiPoints and PresentPoints TBH

Task 'n' Treat Or give it a nice attractive skin and Cody theme, and call it Birdseed...and maybe donate a percentage of everything you get from it to a bird sanctuary.

Sounds like "Payday Power" to me. More points, more power, more presents. A screw-up will put you deep in debt.

I was really conflicted about whether to make this an online application with such features, vs a desktop application. I went the desktop app route, and i think i won't be adding online features to it. If it proves to be something people are interested in it might be nice to make an online version (anyone want to try? it would be nice to share the same xml format files for describing activities, etc.)

My late brother and his brother-in-law were in the sign business many years ago. He had a critiqueing system for signs proposed by customers. The system may be useful in your situation? For example, the local fishmonger wanted a big banner type sign that he could hang in front of the store when he got a big load of fish in for sale. He informed my brother that he wanted the sign to read: FRESH FISH SOLD HERE TODAY Bro suggested maybe they could shorten the sign some and still get the point across. They discussed the word FRESH and decided that once you got a whiff of the fish it became obvious it wasn't fresh. Fresh was chopped off and they looked at the word FISH. It was decided that with the rack full of ice and fish in front of the store that the word FISH was expendable. They soon agreed that everyone in town knew it was a fish store so they dropped SOLD. Left with HERE TODAY they readily agreed that HERE was redundant. After all, this IS the fish market! With only TODAY left it seemed ridiculous to hang the sign. With all that stinky fish out front when else would it be for sale? Being mutually agreed on the sign my brother bought a couple of Red Snappers and left. Perhaps "POINTS" would suffice?

some things i look for in a name:
1) if you tell someone the name, they should be able to do a web search based on what they hear and find it easily. this means that many names like points2progress are troublesome because you might thing its "points 2 progress" or "points to progress" etc. i think always prefer something that has an intuitive way to spell it. 2) if there are too many hits in search engine thats not great.. better to have something unique and easy to find.
